Some Tron fans might be a little disappointed that TRON: Catalyst isn't a big fancy AAA game with cutting-edge graphics and whatnot, thinking that Disney doesn't care about the franchise enough to put huge sums of money into it (compared to, say, Star Wars games). But me, I was actually kind of relieved when I looked at the system requirements for the game and saw that it can most likely be run on my sligthly old, not-cutting-edge-specs computer. I'm happy that I won't have to buy a whole new computer, or a new game console, to keep up with the Tron franchise, at least not for a little while longer (who knows, maybe we'll get a big high-end game to tie in with TRON: Ares somewhere down the line?).
I felt similarly about TRON: Identity, and I might go so far as to say that I almost hope that Tron remains a "lesser" Disney franchise, if it means that we'll get more low-budget, but still well-made and interesting games set in its universe. To quote Jordan Mallory, "I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding."
At the same time, I will also admit that I'm happy that Catalyst does seem to have one important improvement over Identity: Voice acting. Even though that presumably require a slightly higher budget.

New Tron game looks dope, I'm definitely looking forward to it. That being said it is extremely funny to me that the trailer dropped this afternoon and is already bringing the anti-woke crowd out to complain that Tron has "gone woke" because of the skin tone and supposed genitals of a fucking computer program.

Having been in the Vo/tron fandom from very shortly after S1 first aired and having stayed at least adjacent to it for the whole long slog up to present day is a curse for many reasons but also because it means most every time I see people try to explain the origin of the anti movement I have to cringe at all the things they are confidently getting wrong
And I’m not going to say anything, I did not save receipts or document this whole stupid phenomenon because it gave me a headache then and it gives me a headache now and I am simply not interested in being your discourse historian
But I am just standing in a corner like

Tron: Catalyst - Trailer analysis & what we know so far
OMG - they finally announced a sequel to Tron: Identity!
youtube
However, unlike its predecessor, Tron: Catalyst will not be a visual novel, but a top-down action game. Furthermore, although the story is supposed to be a continuation of Tron: Identity, we won't be playing as Query, but a new program called Exo.
I was actually pretty surprised by this, since I more or less expected them to continue the story on the same note where we left off. That the game is going to feature disc combat, Light Cycle rides, and collectable data shards you can use to upgrade your disc and learn new abilities actually makes it sound a lot more similar to Tron: Evolution in terms of gameplay.
I suppose one reason they chose a different genre was to appeal to a broader audience - I've seen people who said they wouldn't pick up Identity despite being Tron fans because they thought a visual novel would be "boring". As for myself, however, I'm actually not sure - one news article called it a "futuristic Diablo and Hades of sorts", and as I've neither played these games nor any others like them, I don't know if the genre even suits me. (Generally, I tend to be quickly overwhelmed and frustrated by games where there are a lot of moving targets at once that I have to react to in real-time.) On the other hand, Tron: Identity was my first visual novel, too, and I even ended up enjoying the puzzle elements quite a lot despite not being that big on puzzle games. I definitely appreciate the devs wanting to try new things with the gameplay, and I'm not averse to broadening my horizons once in a while. :-)
With that being said, I'm now going to take a look at what we know of the story so far, from the trailer and the Steam page. I'm also going to make some speculations about the story based on Tron: Identity - however, be advised that this will contain spoilers for Tron: Identity.
[Spoilers for Tron: Identity]
The trailer starts off with two voices speaking in the background, presumably belonging to Query and Exo. Query calls the Arq Grid "a digital sanctuary", but Exo is quick to interject "it was". Query adds "Core won't let you escape with exile. And even if you do… nobody escapes the Glitch."
The way it sounds, things have definitely taken a turn for the worse. That Core was the real villain was already sort of hinted at in Identity, but whereas they were only a looming presence in that game - inactive, but there - they seem to employ more violent measures now.
According to various news articles, a program named Conn is going to lead the charge, a malevolent agent of Core pursuing Exo. However, the Steam page states he also has an agenda of his own - given that it sounds like he's going to be the main villain of the game, I'm intrigued what that's going to be.
As for the Glitch, we learn from the Steam page that Exo was working as a courier program on the Arq Grid when she received a mysterious package that exploded. From this, Exo gained powers unlike those of any other program. This power is known as the Glitch, and it enables Exo to manipulate and turn back time on the Grid.
This very much sounds like it could be the glitch mentioned in the final memory from Tron: Identity - who knows, Exo might even be the "outsider" mentioned in the text (the prefix exo- literally means "outside/external"). The Glitch's ability to create time loops also sounds quite reminiscent of the quote "A loop cannot be broken without a change in conditions" from the ending of Tron: Identity, as well as Cass seeing the end of the Arq Grid over and over again.
The Steam page does say that more is going to be revealed about the glitches that "threaten the stability of this world" over the course of the story, though it's interesting that Exo will be able to utilize the Glitch to her own advantage. Also, I really wonder who sent that package - Query did want to leak the information he received from Cass, so I wonder if this is what happens if someone actually reads the data…
Btw, you can even briefly see Query in the trailer! Interestingly, he doesn't wear his Disciples of Tron uniform and has a stubble now. The fact that he's in plainclothes probably means that he went into hiding (maybe he also rezzed himself the stubble so he wouldn't be recognized xD). The scene appears to take place in some pub with other programs, though there's no way to tell whether Cass is with Query or not (at least I haven't been able to spot them anywhere in the background).
Tumblr media
The screenshots on the Steam page also give us a glimpse of a few other characters, including Vega, who appears to be an ally/NPC. They offer to give Exo their glove as proof she has derezzed them, so perhaps there'll be a choice to either kill them or let them live.
Tumblr media
Another character seen in the screenshots is Hertz, who seems to be an antagonist. Exo's dialogue reveals they belong with Core, and they are seen threatening/beating up a defenseless program, with Exo intervening to make them stop. Although the screenshot shows a dialogue window, it's unclear whether you'll be able to select your responses yourself. (One news article said that Catalyst's story is going to be more linear, but you will still be able to influence some subsidiary developments.)
Tumblr media
Speaking of dialogue choices, I wonder whether your decisions from Tron: Identity are going to have any impact in this game. That was actually one of my biggest wishes - I'd love it if you'd meet Proxy at some point again if you let her live (perhaps even save Prinz if he was abducted), or if Sierra would put in a good word for you with the Automata if you freed him. However, that would require a savegame import, and we don't know yet whether Tron: Catalyst will support such a feature.
What seems to be for certain, on the other hand, is that the Automata are going to play an important role. In one of the screenshots on the Steam page, Query actually tells Exo to seek them out, as their influence in the city is the second largest after Core's. Personally, I'm absolutely stoked about this - the Automata were probably my favorite original addition from Tron: Identity, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed we'll see more of them (who knows, perhaps we'll even see them in their "true form", as they only take human shapes around other programs so they're more comfortable around them).
Tumblr media
Another thing to note here is that you can see a "missed opportunity" to "restart the loop to get here earlier" among the mission objectives at the top left. This suggests that the order/time in which you do things might actually be essential and influence outcomes. It's even entirely possible you only have a limited amount of time available to do the things that you need to do, similar to Zelda: Majora's Mask.
Last but not least, there seems to be a great emphasis on the various factions of the Grid and the conflict between them - the advertising text on Steam even talks about a "budding revolution". It definitely sounds like the programs of the Arq server are going to challenge the authority of Core, who aimed to control any and all information - perhaps this is what "Grid changed forever" from the last memory ultimately means. In any case, supporting the programs in their revolution sounds super exciting - in fact, it almost feels like a spiritual successor to Tron: Uprising.
As for myself, I'm definitely very eager to see what Tron: Catalyst has in store for us. I already loved Tron: Identity, and it seems like they want to kick things up another notch with this one! (My only "problem" is that I already have way too many games I absolutely want to check out in 2025 - God have mercy on my poor gamer soul. xD)

One of my first reactions when I learned about TRON: Catalyst, was "holy crap, we're actually getting a sequel to a piece of Tron media?" I mean, the Tron franchise is littered with stories that end on a cliffhanger, with unresolved plot threads, or just with hints that a sequel was planned, but then we never got any followups (see Tron 2.0, Tron Legacy, and Tron Uprising). I had worries that TRON: Identity would go the same way, but to my great delight, for the first time, Tron fans might actually get to see some dangling threads getting tied up (or at least spun further? Sorry, I'm not good with thread metaphors).
It's kind of funny that it would happen with TRON: Identity specifically, since the fact that the game has multiple endings, where different important characters live or die, probably makes it extra tricky to continue in a sequel. Will the game creators just decide that one particular ending is canon? Or will they be deliberately vague, only mentioning the events and characters from the previous game in passing? I at least hope we get to know what happened with Cass.

One of the things I like about the Tron video games is that it's never the same deal, it's always varied in its genre. While I'd like a sequel to really any one of them, it just gets old when they have a property that had a successful game in that genre and they decide to stay in it forever.
Discs of Tron, a semi blockade type.
Space Paranoids, a tank shooter.
Deadly Discs, a top down version of Discs.
Adventures, sidescroller.
Solar Sailer...what even is that?
2.0, FPS.
Killer App, Isometric.
Evolution, 3rd person action adventure
Battle Grids, I guess would be considered racing.
Run/R, a- self explanatory!
Identity, visual novel
and now Catalyst, a rogue-lite (like?)

AHSOKA REVIEW: I'm sorry but Dave Filoni has got to go lol. Ahsoka show is so mediocre in execution. His dialogue and style of directing just do not translate to live action well at all. The dialogue is so stilted and full of pauses, enough that it feels like actors are in entirely different spaces when reciting lines. All of it feels so expository and flat. Characters do not act like real people, they act as plot and lore delivery machines.
Rosario Dawson and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are not a bad actors. And yet here...Ahsoka is played so stoic, so emotionless, that it has to come down to the directing and writing telling her to do so. None of the charisma Ashley Eckstein and the animators of TCW and Rebels is here whatsoever. Winstead's Hera Syndulla is also played very flat. Can we also talk about how the blue eye contacts for both make the characters look absolutely lifeless and cheap? You can also just tell Natasha Liu Bordizzo is being instructed to act a certain way and wants to do more with the character but cant. It's so frustrating!
There is some stuff to like here: the stuff going on with Skoll and Hati at least seems mildly interesting, but it's also doing the Dave Filoni thing of changing the entire lore structure of a pretty well known universe by introducing more and more fantasy elements and glup shittos from the EU. It is just not dramatically interesting, sorry. Marrok at least looks cool as fuck by emulating Rinzler from Tron lol.
And this just brings us to the problem with modern Star Wars; It is all becoming so interconnected to the animated tv shows that they assume you'll have seen them already and understand who so and so blorbo's and glup shittos are and why they're here. But new SW creators are also in the trap of having an entire generation of younger fans created because of those shows now watching and wanting to feel validated. How do creators please both camps? How do you make people suspend disbelief enough to think that Thrawn really was part of the Empire that Lucas established in the OT? It just feels like Lucasfilm and Filoni steered the ship into the trap of fan service and ridiculous lore by mistakenly believing it could make up for the flaws of the prequels and any inconsistencies they might have later on and it is just sinking the entire ship.
Casual fans just do not care about this stuff and it's causing the entire SW machine to fail. It is also what made The Mandalorian drop hard in quality and also Book of Boba Fett.
The animated shows have never had any REAL parity with the main saga and it is a huge mistake to make it the backbone and catalyst of all the new content. I'm sorry, but most people don't want to watch 100+ hours of an animated show to understand what's going on in the series their grandma also wants to watch and easily understand. Only Disney Adult 30+ year olds and younger millennials that grew up on The Clone Wars could possibly find this pleasing.
(The way I had to hold off on talking about Andor's brilliance in comparison here...consider yourself lucky. ANDOR STANS RISE UP!!!!!)
