According to the Tron Wiki, the character "Radia" is possibly named after the computer programmer Radia Perlman, whose contributions to network design (that are far too complicated for me as a layperson to understand) has earned her the nickname "Mother of the Internet".

She did once write a short poem about her work, a parody of Joyce Kilmer´s (in)famous poem "Trees":

Algorhyme

I think that I shall never see

A graph more lovely than a tree.

A tree whose crucial property

Is loop-free connectivity.

A tree which must be sure to span

So packets can reach every LAN.

First the root must be selected.

By ID it is elected.

Least cost paths from root are traced.

It’s about time I’ve added another fandom on my archive! TRON! I’ve always loved Disney���s Tron, especially the 1982 film, but I’ve also loved what they’ve done with the style of Tron:legacy and uprising. I decided to add onto my own adaptation to the comics Tron: betrayal and Tron evolution, seeing that these characters are Radia, Clu, and Jalen(Abraxas). You’ve got these three ambassadors of the grid, and Clu who doesn’t like to share power.

Tron-spiration: the otherworldly fashion of Erté

So, seeing as people enjoyed my post about the influence of Tron 1982 on Alexander McQueen, I figured I should do some more posts about costume history and Tron.

So...

Erté.

Even if you are unfamiliar with the man, you have almost certainly been exposed to his art in some way or other. The work of graphic artist and designer Romain de Tirtoff, known by the French pronunciation of his initials "R T", left an indelible mark on our perception of the 1920s Art Deco period.

I happen to think it also left a mark on the costuming of the Tron 1982 movie, be it less directly.

Let me illustrate:

(This one may just be my favorite example, actually. Many thanks -or perhaps apologies- to @greetingsprogram1982 for putting this datapusher lady on my dash and sparking this post!)

Now, there are more parallels to be drawn (see below), but I don't think the work of Erté was necessarily a direct influence on Tron.

Rather, I feel like Erté often drew characters and costumes that wouldn't feel out of place decked out in circuits on the ENCOM system, with their graphic lines, sweeping drapery and extravagant headdresses. Mostly designed for the stage, Erté's fashion embodies a sense of being intended for another dimension entirely. His work is a visual fantasy of a different world; graphic, luscious, permissive, and dripping in the technological optimism of Art Deco and the 1920s. And well... isn't that a mindset quite close to the vibe of Tron?

In other words, I can easily see cultural osmosis pulling the 1982 concept artists to similar stylistic ideas...

Now, I realize most of the examples I have shown are fairly muted in color, which was not a deliberate choice! Erté has more to offer than that. Tell me honestly that you can't see some ENCOM system Datapushers rocking these outfits:

And to round it out... the later Tron media leaned away from the 1982 style that so echoed Erté and the fashion of the Art Deco to me, but there is something left of it...

(Somehow, I always end these posts with Radia? But well, fair is fair, she is the only modern Tron character who'd fit in an Erté illustration xD)

(Also. I have a headcanon that the one character patient and fancy enough for shibari bondage on Flynn's Grid would be Radia. And well, given that I also have a weak spot for student/mentor dynamics... let's just say that some not-so-light bondage featuring Quorra definitely also happened in the pre-coup era...)

I am working on some Tron bondage art atm; depending on how it turns out I may even post it!

"Thank you, Alan." Clu gave a forced smile. Then, holding Tron's hand, he told them everything, from his creation, to Flynn's treatment of him declining further (not that it was great to begin with). He made sure to tell of Tron and Radia helping him, as well as things he now knew were the Grid's efforts to help him. He left nothing out, even though he saw his 'audience' holding each other through the most horrific parts. There were plenty of tears from him, but he kept going. It had been hard enough to get himself ready to do this, he wasn't sure he could make himself continue if he took an actual break. He told of being overworked and malnourished, denied rest and any more medical care than what was needed to just keep him from derezzing when he fell ill or got hurt and how even then he was forced to work just as hard. The things his User said to him or called him, the ways the User hurt him, and he supplemented everything he was telling with memories from his disc, including images of himself with all his scars. He told of Radia's death and the Occupation's rise and how they continued his living nightmare. How they used him and tortured him and ruined him. Their plans for him when they had recaptured him shortly after his arrival at the Sanctuary. Eve had to come and fill in much of the rescue effort and Flynn's death, as Clu had been mostly unconscious for it. And it was all underscored by the fact Clu still couldn't say Flynn's name, only calling him 'User', though now they knew why he couldn't, having seen what Flynn did if Clu called him anything except 'User'. Not even 'User Flynn' was acceptable.

When he finally finished, there was a good size pile of empty energy glasses in front of him as he fell against Tron, his already soaked face getting more soaked as he clung to Tron, awaiting their response. He could feel the Grid being with him now, too as his body shook with his sobs.
