According to the Tron Wiki, the character "Radia" is possibly named after the computer programmer Radia Perlman, whose contributions to network design (that are far too complicated for me as a layperson to understand) has earned her the nickname "Mother of the Internet".
She did once write a short poem about her work, a parody of Joyce Kilmer´s (in)famous poem "Trees":
Algorhyme
I think that I shall never see
A graph more lovely than a tree.
A tree whose crucial property
Is loop-free connectivity.
A tree which must be sure to span
So packets can reach every LAN.
First the root must be selected.
By ID it is elected.
Least cost paths from root are traced.
In the tree these paths are placed.
A mesh is made by folks like me
Then bridges find a spanning tree.

It’s about time I’ve added another fandom on my archive! TRON! I’ve always loved Disney’s Tron, especially the 1982 film, but I’ve also loved what they’ve done with the style of Tron:legacy and uprising. I decided to add onto my own adaptation to the comics Tron: betrayal and Tron evolution, seeing that these characters are Radia, Clu, and Jalen(Abraxas). You’ve got these three ambassadors of the grid, and Clu who doesn’t like to share power.

Tron-spiration: the otherworldly fashion of Erté
So, seeing as people enjoyed my post about the influence of Tron 1982 on Alexander McQueen, I figured I should do some more posts about costume history and Tron.
So...
Erté.
Even if you are unfamiliar with the man, you have almost certainly been exposed to his art in some way or other. The work of graphic artist and designer Romain de Tirtoff, known by the French pronunciation of his initials "R T", left an indelible mark on our perception of the 1920s Art Deco period.
I happen to think it also left a mark on the costuming of the Tron 1982 movie, be it less directly.
Let me illustrate:
(This one may just be my favorite example, actually. Many thanks -or perhaps apologies- to @greetingsprogram1982 for putting this datapusher lady on my dash and sparking this post!)
Now, there are more parallels to be drawn (see below), but I don't think the work of Erté was necessarily a direct influence on Tron.
Rather, I feel like Erté often drew characters and costumes that wouldn't feel out of place decked out in circuits on the ENCOM system, with their graphic lines, sweeping drapery and extravagant headdresses. Mostly designed for the stage, Erté's fashion embodies a sense of being intended for another dimension entirely. His work is a visual fantasy of a different world; graphic, luscious, permissive, and dripping in the technological optimism of Art Deco and the 1920s. And well... isn't that a mindset quite close to the vibe of Tron?
In other words, I can easily see cultural osmosis pulling the 1982 concept artists to similar stylistic ideas...
Now, I realize most of the examples I have shown are fairly muted in color, which was not a deliberate choice! Erté has more to offer than that. Tell me honestly that you can't see some ENCOM system Datapushers rocking these outfits:
And to round it out... the later Tron media leaned away from the 1982 style that so echoed Erté and the fashion of the Art Deco to me, but there is something left of it...
(Somehow, I always end these posts with Radia? But well, fair is fair, she is the only modern Tron character who'd fit in an Erté illustration xD)
Anyway, if you enjoyed this, there's a pretty good collection of a lot of Erté's graphic work online here, and this auction website still shows a number of the costumes that were made to his design (a few of which I featured).

Prompts for Pride Month [Closed!]
I’m going to reblog some more prompts and accept them throughout June to celebrate pride month! :D

I’m gonna try to keep things somewhat short so I can actually finish them. No more than 500 words unless I really get carried away.
I’m also gonna keep things relatively safe for work. Suggestiveness is fine but don’t go fishing for explicit content lol.
I will be reblogging several prompt lists, so please specify the list you’re referencing as well as the prompt if you submit something. Don’t just send me a number.
Here are the ships I’ll write (in no particular order):

send a five-word prompt for a five-paragraph fic
"your hugs are the best"
[Choosing Alan because he has the power of Dad on his side]
Alan was visiting the Grid again. He found himself doing so more often when he had the spare time. How could he not? He had quite the family growing here, and it would be rude to keep them waiting.
Clu was working on something new, with the encouragement of Tron to do so. There were rumors of ISOs beginning to form again in the sea. True or not, no one wanted any ISO to feel unwelcome on the Grid after what the Occupation had done.
Tron was on his way to the sea, leaving Clu alone - Hal had gone with Tron to be an ambassador, which left Alan wondering why. Clu loved the ISOs, loved Radia, so why did he avoid them..?
Alan's question was answered when he carefully approached the Administrator. Clu hadn't noticed him yet, but Alan had noticed the tears streaming down his cheeks. The User, careful not to startle the program, pulled Clu into a gentle hug.
"Alan, I-" Clu started, trying to excuse his tears and put on the brave face that had been tortured into him by his previous User. It broke easily when Alan shushed him softly, like soothing a child. Alan's arms were strong enough to be protective, but not restrictive. Tron's hugs were good but.. Alan's had a sort of feeling that Tron couldn't replicate, and that was the care of a good User.
Despite being the same height, Alan rested his chin on top of Clu's head, letting the Admin tuck himself safely away where he could cry without anyone else seeing.
"I'm so scared, User." Clu admitted, and at first Alan thought the slip-up was related to trauma. But this felt different.. Clu actually connected the word to kindness - Alan nearly cried himself.
"What if another Occupation starts? What if I'm not strong enough to protect them? What if-"
"Clu, listen to me." Alan cut Clu off, pulling away enough just to look Clu in the eye.
"The last User here didn't care about the Grid, but I do. The Occupation was allowed to form because of him, not you or anyone else. I'm not saying me being here magically fixes everything, it would be selfish to do so.. what I'm saying is, things are different now. Much, much different. Flynn is gone, Tron is alive, and you have a User - multiple Users, if you count Sam - here to help make sure it stays that way."
"But-"
"No buts, you're married to the hero of the Grid. Your sons are fantastic warriors, your brother is a good User, and the Grid is healing. It's going to be just fine, I promise."
Clu couldn't argue that, as much as his fear wanted him to. He hesitantly nestled back into the warmth of the hug, sniffling lightly.
It was quiet now, but not awkward or strange. It was a comfortable silence, one that felt safe and secure.
"...your hugs are the best." Clu mumbled quietly, breaking the silence for a moment. Alan did, too, because he let out a surprised laugh.
"Yeah..?" Alan smiled, patting Clu's back gently.
"Yours are, too."
#it's my fanfic so you get new ISOs#thanks for the ask!#also the prompt lies it's not limited to 5 paragraphs#yippee!!!!#I had a lot of fun with this. send me more if you'd like

Hydra, Aries, and Saturn, from the questions meme for Hal and/or Clu!
From this meme:
Hydra: Favourite sound?
Clu: Radia's singing. It always helps me when I feel alone or sad or upset. I just play one of the memories from her disc.
Hal: um......I don't really have one.
Aries: Favourite movie?
Clu: No specific titles, but I like sci-fi. Especially anything about space. I also like space and space exploration documentaries. Have you seen the "Mars: Dead or Alive" episode of Nova on PBS?
Hal: (he's pretty much the same as Clu)
(They both also really like Found Family type stories)
Saturn: Any pets?
Clu: I don't have one, but I've always wanted a Bit. (Bits are a sort of animal on the Grid. There's one in the 1982 Tron movie that I think was supposed to fill the 'cute animal sidekick' spot that a lot of Disney movies have)
*in my AU with @alanbradleyofficial he actually has two pet Bits.
Hal: Sal (lovingly) calls my twin brothers our 'pet idiots'. Does that count?

Aaaaaah, that's so awesome, thank you so very much!
I love that you told the history of the Grid through Tron's eyes and how things were different and all the changes that kept happening! The throughlines and repeating parts were a fun emphasis and helped it feel like an old epic story that's been told countless times. I also love that you incorporated the Radia/Ophelia name change! I also love that you wove together some of the aspects that vary between parts of canon and made them make sense.
Thanks again! <3!
Prompt: Encom programs of your choice being brought to the Grid and figuring out the differences between the systems - hexagon pupils, simplified circuits, etc.
So this could’ve gone two ways: Tron ogling Shaddox or Tron having a prolonged existential crisis over repeated realizations that everything he believes is inconsequential and wrong.
I went with the latter and drizzled it with some worldbuilding. >:)
---
Tron is the first program uploaded to this new system, and lies dormant until Flynn arrives and rouses him.
“We’re going to do great things,” Flynn says, beaming as he helps Tron to his feet.
And Tron, eye to eye with a god, believes him.
Flynn also says this to the admin he forks from his own code. What a terrifyingly divine thing! This Clu fills an uplifted space between User and program, yet neither Creator nor created seem to understand the significance of their connection.
Tron doesn’t dare speak of it. To do so would be blasphemy. Clu isn’t like him and never will be.
He averts his eyes.
After the admin comes an architect made the traditional way. Written. He’s a mountain of a program, steeled with the strength to raise skyscrapers out of this infinite and empty expanse. His light-lines are broad and minimal, so bright as to appear white rather than blue. They make the weight of Tron’s light-suit seem like lead against his intricate designs underneath.
Flynn introduces him as Shaddox.
“Greetings, program.” Tron extends his hand the way Flynn taught him. Once close enough, he can’t help but stare. This program’s eyes are unlike any he’s seen. Sharp, hexagonal. Like looking into a glitch.
When the handshake goes on too long, Flynn asks if everything’s okay. It is. It has to be. Tron’s adaptable, it’s written into his code. He says yes.
All programs are sculpted by Flynn’s hand in these early cycles, and they all share the same peculiarities as Shaddox, to the point Tron himself becomes the outlier. Clu is too, but Clu isn’t like him, and never will be.
The things Tron initially found off-putting become a sacred maker’s mark, making these programs as worthy of protecting as Flynn himself. If Tron doesn’t look them too closely in the eye, he can even fancy this system a home.
The Grid grows exponentially, and try as he might, Tron cannot watch over it all. But Flynn provides: he feeds program templates into the system and gives it permission to distribute them as necessary.
The first of these programs is a security monitor half Tron’s size, designation Dyson. His loyalty is innate, his skills impressive. He brings new curiosities: secondary light-lines with colors indicating some unknown factor and, alarmingly, round pupils—like him and Clu. Clu, who is too jealous in this moment to do anything more than seethe and grind his teeth.
Internally, Tron recoils. These programs are so far removed from Flynn they may as well have no User at all! How is it possible they share anything in common with him? The very thought makes his processes twist.
So Tron grows aloof. He sinks into his work and leaves room for little else, overclocking in his waking cycles to spare himself the uncanny gaze of these Userless programs. And it works. For a while.
The Grid forces his hand, however, when programs outside Flynn’s given parameters emerge from the sea. Tron is there when Ophelia chooses her name and takes Flynn’s hand with unflinching confidence and grace. Flynn is mesmerized by her free will, Clu by her purposelessness, and Tron by her light-lines. They’re plentiful and dense, and despite the radical asymmetry, the closest thing to his own he’s seen in a hundred cycles.
This illusion of similarity fizzles the instant they’re eye to eye. However much Flynn denies his involvement or philosophizes about their origins, it is clear in the sharp angles of her pupils that his hand is present in her existence.
It’s as if the system itself wishes to sweep Tron up in a current of obsolescence, to rub his nose in every impossible leap forward and tell him he must stay where he is.
This ISO program and all that follow are more unknowable and alien than the rest. They aren’t like him, and they never will be.
They are so much more.
Tron doesn’t look many ISOs in the eye after that, for his back is turned to them in protection. He isn’t sure who to blame more, Clu for his irate fire or his fellow Basics for being so easily kindled.
But a new kinship is forged in this flame. The generated security programs that fill his ranks become a formidable chain wrapped around his fist. In his downtime, they even become family. At times he can forget the history that roils beneath his light-suit or the lack of a User’s direct intent behind their eyes.
It’s a mistake. One paid for dearly.
It comes toppling from all sides like gridbug-ridden code. Tron says the wrong thing to Radia, who embodies her new name with a divinity Tron thought exclusive to Users. Then Dyson, his fiercely loyal second-in-command, becomes fiercely loyal to Clu, who is not like Tron and will never be.
And Flynn, this User, this god, is too distracted by whatever lies outside his creation to heed Tron’s warnings.
Perhaps they were omens, all those broad light-lines, the hexagons cutting into him with mere looks. Too little, too late.
Clu sheds his User clothes for the moment that defines everything as before and after. His circuits are gold, unlike any other in this system. His eyes are a cruel parody of Flynn’s.
Tron holds his head high as he falls. He defies Dyson’s hungry gaze, does not flinch under his knife. He resolutely refuses to offer Clu the satisfaction of his defeat. When he escapes with a shade of his life, he ferments in his stubbornness and rancor and loss for countless cycles.
Programs come and go, and Tron scarcely notices them. He can’t even look at the pile of errors he’s become.
Then, the first interesting program in ages trips his alerts by doing something profoundly stupid. As one does when going a little stir crazy in a world that seeks to end him, Tron incapacitates and drags this aberration back to his hideout.
Tron rifles through his disc. His name is Beck, a mechanic local to this small backwater. His secondary circuits and round pupils declare his Userlessness, but aren’t they all similarly forsaken these cycles? His hair is wild, his temperament angry and reckless, his skills natural but unpolished.
Just the kind of program Tron needs.
“We’re going to do great things,” Tron says, and looks Beck in the eye as he helps him to his feet.
