The only known books translated from this Indigenous Australian language, tells sisters Ngarta and Jakuna's experience living in traditional Walmajarri ways.

5. My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrente (Translated from Italian by Ann Goldstein)

My Brilliant Friend is a rich, intense and generous-hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighbourhood, a city and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her two protagonists.

6. Childhood by Tove Ditlevsen (Translated from Danish by Tiina Nunnally and Michael Favala Goldman)

Tove knows she is a misfit, whose childhood is made for a completely different girl. In her working-class neighbourhood in Copenhagen, she is enthralled by her wild, red-headed friend Ruth, who initiates her into adult secrets. But Tove cannot reveal her true self to her or to anyone else.

7. La Bastarda by Trifonia Melibea Obono (Translated from Spanish by Lawrence Schimel)

The first novel by an Equatorial Guinean woman to be translated into English, La Bastarda is the story of the orphaned teen Okomo, who lives under the watchful eye of her grandmother and dreams of finding her father. Forbidden from seeking him out, she enlists the help of other village outcasts: her gay uncle and a gang of “mysterious” girls reveling in their so-called indecency. Drawn into their illicit trysts, Okomo finds herself falling in love with their leader and rebelling against the rigid norms of Fang culture.

8. Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge (Translated from Chinese by Jeremy Tiang)

In the fictional Chinese city of Yong’an, an amateur cryptozoologist is commissioned to uncover the stories of its fabled beasts. A personal reading project, where I endeavour to read a book from each of the 193 United Nations member states plus 7 extra* ones. My main goal is to have fun and to learn, but I do have rules for myself:

The book should be fiction, and preferably a novel. I allow plays and poetry, but non-fiction only as the very last resort

The author should have the nationality of their country. If they have lived a good portion of their life there and genuinely represent the local culture, then it's ok if they've been born somewhere else

I want to read books that represent the local literary tradition. Preferably a "classic", a book that illustrates the local culture, or a book that is famous within the country. I avoid popular and contemporary fiction, and books that play outside of the country.

*Extra states have been determined based on UNESCO membership and personal interest where I want to read more books from. This is not a political statement.

The session addresses Trifonia Melibea Obono’s role as a writer of international projection, scholar, and as an activist of gender equality and human rights, including LGBTQIA+ rights. Speakers will each pose one question to Melibea Obono, which she will address, before opening the session to the audience for an inclusive dialogue.

Trifonia Melibea Obono is the author of Herencia de Bindendee (2016), La bastarda (2016), La albina del dinero (2017), Las mujeres hablan mucho y mal (2018), Yo no quería ser madre: vidas forzadas de mujeres fuera de la norma (2019), Allí debajo de las mujeres: Djí ené bina bito así (2019) and, just recently, La hija de las mitangan (2023). Her novel La bastarda was published in English by The Feminist Press in 2018. She is the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, and she is working on a research project on gender-based violence, intersectionality, and LGBTQIA+ identities.

La Bastarda by Trifonia Melibea Obono

This book was probably my favorite book I’ve had to read for class in a while. It was queer, it talked about gender, family, tradition, and more. I normally prefer books that have magic or fantasy elements but I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was short but sweet, I would definitely recommend

Sur le plan thématique, le démontage - depuis le point de vue d’en bas, celui des existences violemment précarisées dont la narratrice du roman se veut tout à la fois le symbole et le porte-voix - des mécanismes de perpétuation de l’hétéropatriarcat et de toutes les formes de domination qui lui est attachés se fonde sur l’adoption d’une perceptive décentrée, tantôt drôle, ébahie, incrédule ou désespérée, mais toujours sans concession.
