Not only is she singing TF out of this song, his playing is…I can’t even pick a word for how beautifully he plays, and the way he accompanies her.
He is presenting her voice. Being a frame around a work of art.
And finally, the way he softly encourages/compliments and watches her sing this poetry, is almost hard to watch because I almost feel like I’m watching something intimate happening here.

i saw the last couple groups in the FP at the John Nicks Pairs Challenge today - the physical courage it takes to be a pairs girl 😱 if a pairs team makes what they do look easy, they are amazing. and a number of these teams did make their elements look smooth and controlled. it's early in the season, nobody skated clean today. some of the throws looked so hard on the skater's knee. the team who won had 3 elements with negative GOE and a fall. pairs is so hard omg
Chelsea Piers has 2 rinks, but they always hold this competition in the one without stands. the few spectators, maybe 30? stand at the boards - there's glass all the way around except where the judges are, and the top of the boards are eye level in a lot of places, so it's like watching the skaters in a fish bowl. a lot of the skaters are warming up off ice or talking to people while the competition is going on. and maybe 15 other people sitting by the windows not even watching, scrolling their phones or hanging out
the team representing Uzbekistan who won bronze, Geynish/Chigirev, are new to me - they have a cool program to this song by Concha Buika
Ghilardi/Ambrosini skated to Phantom whyyy lol of all the music in the world, if you're a top team, why pick music that's been skated to death - their spin was invalidated, there was an issue with a lift and they had some issues with jumps, but no falls. in the moment, their placement was still surprising because all the teams were having tricky moments
Efimova/Mitrofanov looking like they're gelling for a brand new team- they skated Je Suis Malade
Laurin/Ethier looked like they'd progressed with this program since Championnats last month
pairs teams have some nice spin positions that i've never seen dancers use, and i wonder why - you see so many of the same ones across the ice dance field - maybe it's partly the size difference being greater in pairs teams making some different ones possible
the biggest reason i think it seems like pairs is SO hard is that most teams look like all their energy needs to go into doing the elements so there's less left over for choreo or listening to and expressing the music. and lifts - executing them for levels and keeping their partner safe doesn't always leave room for turning cleanly or smoothly on a skate level. the teams in those top groups today never looked precarious - sometimes pairs competitions can be terrifying, but these teams were at a high level

So while I'm still working on my Day 3 entry for KLAW (I'm just going to call it "The Bread Fic" for now), I thought I'd introduce 2 OCs that I've created specifically for this fic.
It's a mini fic in the "Eleanor's Kitchen" series, that follows Liam and his mum and their friends through many culinary adventures!!
The mini-fic (which I'm still writing haha) will focus on Liam's bond with the two head palace chefs, Chef Anais Martí and Pastry Chef Hitoshi Luno. I hope to get that fic out soon but in the meantime, here are some HCs!!
Chef Anais Martí
(FC: Concha Buika)
• Head Chef of the Royal Palace of Cordonia
• Runs her kitchen like a well-oiled machine
• I mean seriously, kings and queens may come and go in the throne room, but the Palace Kitchens are her kingdom and she will never let you forget that!! Especially if you're royalty!
• She hails from Emeric, a county in the Foundries that houses a substantial Catalan-Spanish population who migrated there in the 1700s. It is said that the Foundaries overall are the one place in Cordonia that have mastered molecular gastronomy, but Emeric has chefs that do both that and some rustic homestyle cooking too.
• Anais is very good at molecular gastronomy. She just won't do it.
• A lot of her signature dishes have an Afro-Catalan influence.
• She worked as a line cook in one of the Capitol's premier restaurants when she was very young, and worked her way up. Word of her incredible chef skills and versatility made her a favourite choice to head the palace kitchens when the former Head Chef had to retire. Prince Constantine was in his late teens then.
• She has very few memories of Queen Agnes, Leo's mother, because she seemed uncomfortable with anyone in the palace in the brief time she was there. Queen Eleanor and Queen Regina are perfect contrasts to that in different ways - Eleanor was very involved and would chat often with Anais - in fact the suggestion for a private kitchen came from Anais because honestly - she could see the passion in Eleanor for cooking and released she needed her own space. Queen Regina she values because she gets involved the way you would expect a queen to be involved, and also trusts Anais' judgement.
• Undoubtedly she has the softest soft spot for Prince Liam, since the moment he stole a slice of wedding cake to give to his brother during a punishment.
Pastry Chef Hitoshi Luno
• Compared to Anais, Hitoshi is a more recent addition to the Palace Kitchens.
• He hails from the Fire Tribes. They have a strong connection to different cultures - Japanese, Romani and at a later stage, Ethiopian. The first and the last also have connections to volcanoes which helped them assimilate into the Fire Tribes better.
• An ancestor of his IS Anton Luno.
• And like this ancestor - he is dumbfounded by the greasiness of some of the food from the Capitol, but has to admit it is addictive.
• His Japanese origins do show a lot in his baking!
• No one crazier for red bean paste in Cordonia than Hitoshi Luno! Surprisingly, his preparations have gotten Constantine to love it and to demand delicacies made from it every day.
• The Fire Tribes were well known for their hunting and cooking with game meat. But there is a section of people who have developed cuisines and culinary knowledge from the people who have migrated there in the latter centuries. Ethiopian honey wine, for instance, took a while to gain any popularity in the province because the inhabitants deemed it too sweet, but they grew to love it. Hitoshi's mother brews some every Christmas.
• When he found out about Lady Hana's love for tea - and knowing she was just (symbolically) disowned from her home - he sent across a sumptuous green tea and honey ice cream "with compliments from the chef". He knows via secondhand information that the teas she has tried are mostly Chinese, but she did like some of the matcha themed stuff the kitchen put out!
• Anais mothered him literally from the minute they were introduced, and it has stayed that way ever since. Hitoshi has caught himself complaining "Maaa! Not in front of the staff!!" several times.

Book 47: You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty
Random letter generator spat out EM so I chose Akwaeke Emezi's You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty. It's a raunchy (in a good way) romance novel with a lot of depth.
I admit one of my guilty pleasures is reading Reddit's Am I the Asshole forum, which if you're not familiar people submit situations they've been in and the readers vote on whether they were acting like an asshole in the situation or not. Or at least that's how it's supposed to be, a lot of the entries are fake and it's really hard to tell which are which. Anyway, sometimes some of them feel like writing exercises in having the worst possible titles "AITA because I burned down an orphanage?" and yet somehow justifying it in the text. Well, in a lot of ways this book reminded me of that. [minor spoiler] "AITA for ditching my boyfriend for his hot, rich, celebrity dad?" and yet getting justified in the text.
It's a good read, it's a hot romance novel, but it deals with the topic of grief and survivor's guilt, etc all very well. It name dropped a lot of real people that my sorry white ass didn't know, but a well versed Black reader might (eg. Concha Buika and Helen Oyeyemi). And then some references I did get like Bojack Horseman and Bob's Burgers. It feels very hip, and modern.
Best Line: "I'm just trying to find out if it fucks like a duck"
SHOULD YOU READ THIS BOOK: I'd recommend it. If you absolutely don't read romance, or don't want to read something with dirty words you can give it a pass, but it's fun and deep all at the same time.
ART PROJECT:
Two pivotal scenes take place at an island sunrise, so I thought I'd give that a go.

Let's talk about control. There is power in relinquishing control of your instrument as a singer. A voice teacher once told me, "you have to learn the rules so that you can break them". This space of freedom where you can tell the voice what to do (you've practiced the notes and the phrases and know them like the back of your hand) then you let yourself get lost in the sentiment of the piece...this is where art happens--where magic happens. To have all the tools and the skill level to break the rules for a few seconds and just let the voice dance in space and time. Notes, breath, air, feeling... That's what I hear in performances that I keep coming back to. This is the power of letting yourself become powerless, just a vessel from which art flows. This is great singing. This is what great singers do...in all genres, all languages, in sold out concert halls, in small local churches... This is how you move an audience...by allowing them to feel with you. When a performer reaches into that space, we literally hang on every word. - H
