Most to Least Favorite Moon Signs & Why

1. Pisces moons: ughhh I love me a good Pisces moon😩 you guys are so darn charming it’s ridiculous. I think this is my favorite because I’m a Pisces sun so we compliment eachother quite well. But these people are super considerate of others and their feeling. Whether it’s a boy or girl you guys are super in tuned with your emotions & they emotions of others around you which is why you guys are really good with your words and knowing how to make others feel comfortable around you. These people are also big hopeless romantics & if they have a crush on you just know you’ll be treated like a princess/ prince. They do not play when it comes to their partners fr. They can however be very distant people and you’ll not here from them for like weeks or months at a time (big escapists) but overall if they love you just know your getting well taken care of. Just big sweethearts.

2. Libra moons: another big sweetheart placement. These people are sooo good at making others feel special it’s impressive to me really. (My moons in Aries so the opposite effect Libra moons give intrigue me a lot). They are usually big people pleasers (sometimes to a fault) but they usually are amazing conversationalists and can make you feel like you are the most interesting person in the room and are usually super engaging. Has the ability to keep very peaceful healthy relationships with others ( which as a chaotic Aries moon is super impressive to me💀). They live and breathe romance which I think is super cute. And may I say these people are usually always SO PRETTY just so aesthetically pleasing to look at and are always well dressed. The only thing that can bother me about them is they can be a little overly flirtatious which can be an issue if you’re into them & can say a lot of little white lies to make others feel comfortable. But overall they try really hard to make sure the people around them feel loved which I appreciate a lot. Genuinely nice people.

3. Sagittarius moons: just a big ball of sunshine. It’s pretty rare to see these people in a grumpy or shitty mood. They try really hard to spread “ good vibes” to others and try not to let their emotional drama get in the way of them or others having a good time. These are the best people to go to bars/ parties with. They are big goofballs that love to laugh and make others laugh as well. Can have a very loud laugh as well. Their laughs can be really funny too, you ever met someone whose laugh is usually funnier than the joke being said??? Yeah they’re those people🤣 the only thing I don’t like about this moon sign is that they can be a little too obsessed with positive vibes that they can kinda dismiss other’s emotions which can come off as a little insensitive sometimes.. they can treat others a little weird if they aren’t positive and happy all the time. They can also find it awkward to show negative emotions themselves which is why it can be hard for people to take them seriously at times. It’s okay to be down every once in an awhile you can’t always be upbeat 24/7.

4. Aquarius moons: these people are such weirdos I absolutely love it lol. They have such a unique way of expressing themselves whether that be their music taste, clothing, hairstyles, mindset ect. These people are the definition of authentic. I meet a lot of trendsetters that have this moon placement as well they are super creative and original which can cause a lot of people to copy their style a lot. They are usually super open minded and are really accepting of people from all different walks of life which I find so beautiful. It’s very rare you see them discriminate against anyone (mainly because they know how it feels to be outcasted by others). They are usually friends with other really authentic people whether it be artists, alternative people, rejects, outcasts ect. They can however be very weird when it comes to expressing emotions or others expressing emotions. They can almost be a little mean when people get too emotional around them I notice. Similar to Sag moons they can come off as a little insensitive to others that just need a shoulder to cry on. I think this comes from their need to logically solve emotions ( cuz this is an air moon after all) they can be more worried about solving/ finding solutions to your problems then just allowing you to vent which can rub others the wrong way at times. Overall though very cool quirky people who are way ahead of their time.

5. Cancer moons: are usually super sweet and genuine souls. Every cancer moon I met gives a sorta caretaker vibe to them that i absolutely adore. They’re just people that you want to naturally protect at all costs. Are usually veryyy nice to others as well almost to a scary degree. I notice however I tend to butt heads with this moon sign over the long run. These people can be very self defensive and can take things to heart wayyy to easily ( i think because of my Aries moon I can come off as harsher when I mess around and most I met DO NOT like that) it can be very hard to joke around with these people because of their sensitive personalities they can turn something that was meant to be light hearted into a big lecture of how that was insensitive and unacceptable. They definitely give off mom vibes. They also tend to lack ambition at times I notice and can prefer to be taken care of instead of striving to be better (they prefer comfort over trying new things at times which can be a little stressful if you are a more spontaneous type of person. But I notice this is also a big beauty aspect as well and people with this placement are usually so beautiful to look at (ESPECIALLY THE WOMEN OMG). Normally big homebodies and are really into at home activities such as cooking, watching Netflix, playing board games ect. They can however be super moody if u catch them on a wrong day😭 they will really crash out on you over very minor things sometimes. But overall they are very good natured and are very emotionally intelligent.. it’s honestly crazy how emotionally intelligent these people are they are made to be therapists forreal. They just always have the right words/actions when you are feeling down or upset which is very commendable imo. They know how to make others feel safe expressing themselves with no judgement ♥️

6. Gemini moons: these people are such comedians lol. Usually this moon sign is one of the popular girls/ guys in hs/ middle school. They give big class clown energy and can make anyone laugh. They have a very childlike sense of humor. It can be however difficult to take these people seriously because they can come off as a bit childish with the ways they express themselves but they usually don’t mean any harm by this. One of the best conversations I ever had was with these people. They can change any awkward conversation into something interesting and I thank god for them for this😩. I always however found it very difficult to get close to these people due to the lack of seriousness they have and their very flighty natures. I notice they talk to everyone but it’s very rare they get actually close close to people??? Like they’ll have so many friends that honestly barely know anything about them. They kinda bread crumb their personality at times. Also they can change their personality wayyyy to much for my liking, their opinions, likes and dislikes are so easily changeable based on who they are around which is why it’s hard to really pin these people down. This quality can give a bit of a “two faced quality” to their nature. They can be very all over the place.

7. Taurus moon: I know this might be a shocker cuz I feel like most people really like this moon sign and don’t get me wrong I do like this moon sign but they have this bossiness about them that can be just too much at times for me. I haven’t met a lot of people with this moon sign but the ones I have met have this controlling nature to them that can be a little unsettling at times. I always felt super judged when im around someone with this moon sign I have no idea why. These people are very big “my way or they highway types”. And in general I do find them to be a little boring at times. The ones I met literally only talk about work 24/7 lol their conversations are usually super predictable which can come off as a little dull. However on a more positive note these people are soooo attractive. Like they really know how to sweet talk their way into anyones good side. This is why a lot of big bosses usually have a Taurus moon. They are also amazing a making money their natural boss energy usually attracts so much wealth into their life which is super enviable!! Their romantic relationships as well are usually super stable and loving as well (thanks to the help of Venus). Their love languages usually involve gift giving and physical affection. These people are the BEST cuddles by far. Growing up you could’ve been known for your hugs and cuddles 🥺 they are also super dependable if they love you you won’t have to ever worry about if they’ll come thru for you or not THEY WILL. These people are not flighty in the slightest and will really ride for you. This is why they tend to have such stable healthy relationships in their lives.

8. Capricorn moons: ahhh cap moons, I tend to have a very strong love hate relationship with this moon sign usually. Imma start with the positives by saying that these people really RIDE for you when they love you. These are the types to make sure you get to where you need to be whether that be to work, or an important meeting or appointment or event. They will make sure you are well fed and have clothes on your back. Materially & practically these people will have you COVERED which is very commendable. However emotionally is where they tend to fall short. They can have a very insensitive nature about them that usually always rubs me the wrong way. I notice they can be very judgmental to those who aren’t as efficient as them and can make others feel pretty bad about things they can’t control. Most cap moons had to grow up very fast at a very young age so a lot know how to do things that most people don’t really learn until much older. But because of this they can almost make you feel a little bad if you don’t know how to do those things from what I’ve experienced. I also always felt like I couldn’t completely open myself up emotionally to these people without feeling like my emotions are almost dismissed in a way. They can be VERY dismissive emotionally (usually because they experienced this so much growning up) could believe in a more tough love kinda outlook. Overall tho these are the type of people that will give the clothes off their back to make sure that you are good and I love that about them.

9. Virgo moons: ugh these people are always giving unsolicited advice that no one asked for lol. Most earth moons tend to have a very judgey nature about them but I feel like Virgo moons definitely take the cake for the most judgmental outta all the moon signs. Ik that most of their advice is there to help but it can come off as super mean when it’s excessive. Ive experienced these people trying to correct your behavior on EVERYTHING to an almost irritating degree. They have a strong belief on what’s acceptable and unacceptable and they tend to project these beliefs on others to a fault. They can be overly nit picky with others (which is usually a projection because they are truly more hard on themselves than others tbh) but it’s okay to just let people be without correction so you don’t cause anyone any insecurity. On a more positive note however they are very helpful to the ones they love and their love language usually involves acts of service. They will go grocery shopping for you if you can’t or help clean around the house when you are feeling depressed or down or help wash your hair if you can’t find motivation to do it yourself. These people really do have hearts of gold they just need to beware of their delivery when trying to “help” others a little too much.

10. Aries moon: certified crashouts of the moon signs. These people can be so emotionally immature it’s ridiculous (ik cuz this is my moon sign and lord knows we are not easy to deal with🤣). Aries moons can be very big babies when they react getting their way emotionally. Their impulsive natures can burn a lot of bridges that really didn’t need to be burned. When they aren’t getting their way they can be super mean to those around them which can cause a lot of people to keep their distance from them a lot to avoid these crash outs. On a brighter side when they are in a good mood everyone is brought along for the ride. They can be super generous and absolutely HILARIOUS when in a good mood. This is honestly one of the funnest placements to be around because they are such dare devils and are always down for whatever whenever. But you never know when their moods are gonna switch on you which can be very scary at times…

11. Leo moons: speaking of babies… these folks definitely take the cake for the spoiled brats of the moon signs. Similar to Aries moon when they don’t get their way they have a very dramatic extravagant way of expressing their dislike toward whatever you did to them. These people can have very BIG egos that can be extremely fragile. So when their ego is challenged in any way they can definitely give you hell for it whether it be throwing things, loud temper tantrums ect. They have a hard time expressing themselves in a calm manner when their emotions get in the way which can stir up a lot of drama in their relationships. Their childlike way of dealing with emotions can be a HANDFUL. However these people genuinely do have really big hearts and they don’t mean to come off as dramatic as they do they just experience emotions very intensely. And just like Aries their emotions can turn on & off very fast. They usually aren’t the types to hold a grudge so just let them be dramatic first and then try to have a logical conversation with them. But logic is not really their first language.. most of their emotions are very heart centered & personal making it harder for them to control at times which can be stressful to deal with if you are the other party. (Fire moons however I notice deal with it the best).

12. Scorpio moons: last but not least the secretive ms Scorpio moon.. I put these people as my least favorite moon sign because of how secretive they are with their emotions. I notice a lot tend to shy away from vulnerability altogether (usually due to trauma) but it makes it super hard to understand where these people are coming from most of the time. These people are some of the most confusing individuals to figure out emotionally which can drive their loved ones crazy trying to get out breadcrumbs out these people. Their inability to open up can make others believe everything is okay with them until they start plotting on you cuz deep down you did hurt their feelings they just don’t want to tell you, so I notice a lot tend to play a lot of manipulation mind games to get back at those that hurt them (even if the other party had no idea they hurt them or not because of their lack of opening up). These people hold onto intense emotions that they don’t tell you about which can be SCARY… cuz you never know if they have it out for you or not cuz they will usually have this very calm and collected facade until the Scorpio stinger comes out and stings you out of nowhere. This leaves a lot of people in your life to be very confused by this. I notice with Scorpio moons there’s always this lack of communication or they don’t feel the need to tell you what you did wrong so you can properly fix the issue. This can cause you to burn a lot of bridges that could’ve been great in your life:( on the other hand when they do eventually trust you they can be some of the most loyalist people in your corner and can show you such a sweet side that most haven’t seen (if they show you this side YOU ARE IN! because it is super rare to get this side out of them). Deep down they are really sensitive sweet souls it just takes the hands of god to get to that point.

i love drarry and i love women so put it together and you get this, i present to you: Harphine

Harry is consequently now named Harley; Draco is also now named Delphine (Full name Delphinus Lucius Malfoy, however asks to be referred to as Delphine because it's pretty). I decided to keep everyone else the same because the world centres around them. Delphine is the ultimate coquette girl, lana del rey wishes she could be as coquette as her. Mega popular girl and a trendsetter, one day she wears a headband to school, the next day, half the female students are as well. Extreme closet gay, internalised homophobia...

Harley on the other hand is a major tom-boy, as a toddler and young childhood she probably had a buzzcut or short hair because her hair was too much maintenance for the Dursley's. She also wore Dudley's old clothes so she was mistaken for a boy for most of her young life, she only began to grow it out when she started attending Hogwarts and got a major glow-up in third year. and now the multitude of headcanons: 1) Delphine resorts to flirting to get her way with male students, however it is only by accident does Harley discover Delphine is prudent when she flirts with her. Delphine immediately goes red, sputtering incoherently:

2) Harley is a bit of an artist, she likes drawing/doodling. One day she's sitting in potions class, not listening because fuck that, idly drawing on her parchment without much thought, only for her to realise that hey... this kind of looks like Delphine, and then realising she's just been drawing Delphine in various sitting poses for the past half an hour.

3) Even though Harley really hates Delphine, she has to admit, she's really fucking gorgeous, and in an odd way Harley kind of admires how put together she is. Harley does try to imitate her makeup one day because she wants to know how it feels to be pretty/put together, it turns out shite, Ron laughs at her, Harley beats him up; Delphine also laughs at her. But when they do become good friends, like fifth year or so, Delphine does do her makeup (imagine that one img of the girl on top of the other doing her eyeshadow, that's them).

3.5) Slight extension from the previous one, I mentioned this on my xwitter awhile back -- Harry purposely messes up his tie so Draco can fix it, because Draco's love language is to clean up people, i.e brushing lint off their shoulder, adjusting their collar, kind of like a cat. In this genderbent au, Harley messes up her lipstick everytime so Delphine can redo it.

4) Delphine is a massive closeted lesbian, and is pining for Harley in her own odd way. liveman's premise of a team of heroes being betrayed by their former classmates lends itself to heated drama enjoyers, though i should mention it's been nearly a decade since i've watched it. don't remember mazenda/megumi getting much, and kemp is pretty hard to take seriously, but jou and gou's story particularly resonates

kamen rider x is a bit of an unfocused mess (and i never got around to finishing it), but it is one of the earliest examples i can think of of a tokusatsu villain who so transparently wants to fuck the main hero. apollo geist is a treat all on his own, and his ~fated rivalry~ with keisuke was some of the most fun i've had watching a showa series

speaking of trendsetters, fujimiya and gamu's arc in ultraman gaia feels like the precursor to a lot of the edgy secondary rival types who grow to respect and bond with the hero that heisei rider would especially run with and never look back. much has been made about gaia and agul kissing with tongue, and for good reason

i was about to write a whole thing about how i couldn't think of any older shows with heated drama between women beyond one-off episodes before i remembered these two and screamed "DAIRANGER!" out loud. one of the all-time funniest fake-outs in tokusatsu is thinking they're setting up kujaku to be daigo's love interest only to reveal she's actually been yearning for gara for thousands of years. paired with the brief but iconic jin/ryu arc from our boy inoue, im offended at myself for almost not including this

dan and gen from ultraman leo are heated drama for the enlightened viewer who can watch a man run his subordinate over with a jeep and think "this too is yaoi"

I've always thought Mirabel would do great in fashion, this can work in both the original setting and modern times.

My headcanon is that Agustin's family, the Rojas' are a family of tailors, his mother was a dressmaker and had a business. Agustin was set to take it over but Alma has this whole thing about Madrigals working for money. She believes that they must work to keep earning their miracle and is afraid that if they don't, they'll lose it. So how the family makes money, and when, and for what are closely monitored by her. Madrigals don't charge for what they do, and that's kind of necessary for making clothes, so Agustin gives that up to marry Julieta.

Sofia, his mother, is hurt by this, but hides it and gives the business over to Valentina (who Mirabel is named after), Agustin's sister. Agustin doesn't have a great relationship with his parents, and they don't talk about stuff. Sofia had Agustin when she was quite young and grew up in the city, coming to the Encanto when Agustin was still a boy. She and Alma had tension, Sofia felt that Alma looked down on her for being a young mother and city folk....she's not wrong.

As the years go by Sofia's frustration grows, Agustin is more Julieta's husband than her son and Alma is the Alpha Grandparent despite the Rojas' efforts. However, she and Mirabel always had a connection, as the girl loved to come by the shop and admire the pretty clothes.

After Antonio's ceremony, Mirabel feels more and more useless. She begs Alma to let her learn a trade, but Alma forbids it without telling her why. Mirabel complains to Tia Valentia who isn't crazy about her job anyway and she and Sofia conspire to have Mira come over to "help out" often. What they're really doing is teaching Mira how to make clothes and run the shop.

Mira starts to spend more time with her extended family and changes over the next 3 years. Her clothes become a reflection of her connection to them as opposed to the Madrigals. And because I think it's funny, she goes through a ridiculous amount of puberty and Isabela is the shortest of the three, so her old clothes don't fit her anyway.

Influenced by Valentia and Sofia, Mira makes her own clothes and they are in line with what's popular in 50's, a la 'Miss Victory Violet' and such

She expresses herself through eclectic jewelry and changes her glasses often, becoming a little bit of a trendsetter.

Alma becomes frustrated with this, seeing it as 'tart' and 'ostentatious'. The rest of the family either don't understand why Mirabel is 'acting this way' or why Alma is so against it, so no one's really sure how to stand up for her or if they should at all.

On Mirabel's 18th birthday, the Rojas' give Mirabel the shop and the apartment that's over it. Mirabel announces to the family that she's going to be a dressmaker and Alma is furious that the Rojas' didn't ask her permission about it. (in modern times, this could be Mirabel saying that she wants to get a degree in fashion instead of Accounting, like her father). Mira and Alma argue bitterly about it, both saying things they can't take back before Mirabel snaps and moves out on a whim. Packing up her things and moving into the apartment over the shop.

Mirabel regrets moving out almost immediately but she's too proud to go crawling back, so she toughs it out and realizes she's really at peace. Yes it's quieter than what she's used to and she's always a few months away from financial ruin, but she can finally relax. She doesn't have to constantly explain herself or contend with someone taking out their mood on her.

Alma does attempt to shut Mirabel down a few times, worried that she'll fail and hurt the family image, but Mirabel is really successful and of course, the Rojas' are helping her out.

The shop specializes in Quince dresses and Mirabel's style is akin to Mak Tumang and Sol Peralta

She becomes so popular she gets work outside the Encanto and a bunch of other stuff, but this post is so long already

i just saw a new batch of characters for a mobile otome game and when we say “ayato is the blueprint” we mean it. the red hair + sharp green eyes + edgy look ayato introduced is so popular even years later, people still use him as the standard for ML’s in games. it’s just… such a good design and so recognizable too. i just love him so much and his influence is everywhere!! ayato is the IT boy.

I doubt he was the first character with those features, yet he was the trendsetter. A bunch of otoge boys are designed to resemble him, but with different eye or hair colors, and when people see them, they'll immediately think of Ayato.

Another thing to mention is that Ayato is visually perfect. He has the most desirable features, and I’ve even seen people getting insecure for not looking as pretty as him. Of course, they shouldn’t do that but that’s inevitable to happen when the character represents the ideal of beauty. Even his body is confirmed the ideal one.

Ayato has always been popular in terms of design but in recent years, his appearance and personality have made him HUGE. He’s so famous that people don’t even care about polls anymore, for the mere reason that whether he wins or not, he’s impact, visuals and sales remain unmatched.

Last but not least, I really advise people not to compare themselves to fictional characters. I know Ayato is gorgeous but his visuals are realistically impossible to achieve. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, after all.

Style Savvy (2008) Notes

-(quoting from my discord) i have downloaded a game i never thought i would, and the fact i never thought i would play it is why i decided i should play it. i've heard that style savvy is pretty good, particularly on the comments sections for trailers for similar game Fashion Dreamer saying "Bring Style Savvy back!!!" so like, okay. style savvy is one of those games i remember having an aversion to when i was a kid. this was long before i realized i was trans because i was fucking 7, and you know, among a lot of boys there's an urge to make fun of "girly" things. and i did! i even bullied someone about it, which i'm obviously not proud of. but it's like, alright, now in the year of our fave 2024, i am an adult, i am a woman, i am a decent person, and i am a game designer who wants to understand this medium better. and there's this whole Other Side of gaming that i've just never experienced, and i wanna change that here.

-I am struck by the mundane beauty of women's fashion, but also, GOD this game is 2000s.

-There's just something so beautiful about exploring fashion, and being able to put a smile on someone's face by showing them the perfect outfit for them. I think the original is let down a bit nowadays by fashion standards changing, but there's also a charm to that, I think. Fashion Dreamer kept with the trends and focused on being an influencer, but these days there's plenty of critique of influencer culture even within the fashion world. Being a clerk at a boutique is just a completely different fantasy, and I kind of love it.

-I really like the characterization of each of the customers. You see their name, budget, a little blurb for them, and their general look, and they give some dialogue explaining what they need. That little blurb can be stuff like "A politician who dresses for success" or "A trendsetter, who doesn't realize it." It's really cool, and it feels like I have a personal connection with these people. I could SO imagine this being extended to a more diverse cast and modern standards, like. Imagine helping a newly hatched trans woman find her style. That would be amazing, and it would be an opportunity for people like me to explore that.

Chapter 3 - Visitors

Given the task of accompanying the Earth Prince and her dear friend, Giren, to the Fire Nation over the summer when she was only 14, Sana Beifong didn’t expect to become a bargaining chip to help prevent further invasion into her homeland.

Or: Giren only wanted his dear childhood friend Zuko to be happy after the disappearance of Fire Lady Ursa. After meeting Sana in school in the Upper Ring, Giren decides to come up with the brilliant idea to play matchmaker in the middle of a war between their two nations.

About two weeks into the “diplomatic” vacation to the Fire Nation Prince Giren had convinced (read: forced) Sana to accompany him on, the royal palace became the residency to a few more guests. Azula, ever the social butterfly, had been “friends” with Mai and Ty Lee from a young age. Two daughters of noblemen–one an only child and the other one of seven identical sisters–happened to become her honored friends. The thing is, where the cold and composed Mai went, her rule-bender twin brother Soru followed. 

Soru had been the youngest out of the boys who spent their summers together in the Fire Nation royal palace by one year. He fit right in, in all honesty, with his pretty face and slightly awkward yet extravagant charm. He was a twin–not identical–with whom he would probably call “the most stuck-up and boring girl he knew” and very openly dreaded it. Giren and Soru truly are two peas in a pod, two sides of the same coin (and the sides are near identical). Loud, a trendsetter, and a snake at his core. That is who Soru is. 

“Helloooooo my dearest friends!~” Soru walks (well, struts) into the garden courtyard. “It has been so longggg since I last stepped foot in the palace…” He lives just outside the palace grounds…and he visited a month ago.

Mai rolls her eyes at her pretty brother’s antics and turns to the unfamiliar face: Sana. “Don’t mind my brother, he’s an idiot.” A gasp sounds through the room. I think you know who it is by now.

To the tall girl’s surprise, however, the Earth Kingdom girl looks up at her from across the area with an all too familiar look–one her brother often holds in his eyes. “On the contrary, I believe we will get on wonderfully.” Sana’s disposition is outwardly that of an amicable young noblewoman, but beneath the perfect small smile hidden in her golden olive eyes was the heart of a snake. Before Zuko or Giren speak up, Sana lifts a polite hand to signal them to let her. “Allow me to introduce myself.” She looks to Azula’s friends. “My name is Lady Sana Beifong, junior diplomatic ambassador of the Earth Kingdom. It is a pleasure to meet you girls.”

While Mai was clearly not swayed, it was clear her friend was. Ty Lee absolutely loved Sana’s energy right off the bat. “I’m Ty Lee! Your aura reads very purple so I’ll take that as a sign I’ll like you a lot!” The younger girl was the bubbliest and friendliest of the three, immediately sticking out to Sana as someone she could trust to be a good person. Azula picked powerful friends, ones from both noble backgrounds and had experience holding their ground. Sana didn’t expect such a delightful person like Ty Lee to run in that kind of circle, but you never should judge a book by its cover.

The male twin, appalled by his sister’s declaration of his intelligence, immediately moves to defend himself. “I’m Soru! We’ll be fast friends, I’m sure. That storm cloud over there is my twin sister, Mai.” He quickly takes Sana’s arm to drag her away from the girls, eyeing Giren and Zuko as a signal that they should probably all leave. “You must tell me how you met Ren, though! And how you got the ever-so-stubborn and quiet Zuko to warm up to you so fast…”

Sana chuckled a bit under her breath at the dramatic younger boy. He did certainly speak his mind… “Without a doubt, Soru. I wouldn’t mind explaining at all, it’s no big deal really.” Mai shoots her brother a glare, but it’s rather hesitant. She didn’t trust Sana much, but she was arguably more trustworthy than Azula.

Zuko, surprisingly, was the most stressed out he had been in years and didn’t quite understand why. Maybe it was because his childhood friend group finally had the chance to hang out after such a long time, but the three had been exchanging letters during that gap so that couldn’t be it…Giren noticed, somehow very perceptive despite not always being all there in the head, but didn’t speak up at all. Zuko, for the first time in his life, was jealous because of a girl.

Now you may be thinking that this whole predicament is a bit odd, but in reality, it is quite the near opposite. Giren may not understand Zuko as much as Soru does, but Soru is also a kid so obviously, the oldest in the friend group would know his younger friends pretty well, right? In all the years the trio of boys had been friends, not once had Zuko even shown an inkling of interest in a girl despite growing up with a good handful of them around. If it wasn’t obvious by now that Zuko had the biggest crush imaginable on Sana, Giren would have still thought the Fire Nation prince was as gay as the rest of his friends. The fact that Zuko wasn’t subtle at all about his jealousy (did Zuko even know the definition of subtle?) was the clearest indicator you could get that after only two weeks, the boy was down bad.

“So Sana, what’s the story behind you being in the Fire Nation?”

With a sweet smile and a chuckle escaping her pretty lips, Sana takes a sip of her tea. Of course, Zuko noticed something as small as this even when he wasn’t involved in the conversation. “Well, I had become friends with Giren when I started my first year at the Earth Kingdom Royal Academy two years ago. We became fast friends through a mutual friend, Shihe Lu, and the rest is pretty much history.” She adjusts how she is sitting, the skirt of her dress repositioning into a much more comfortable drape. “Last month Ren told me he’d be traveling here for the summer and asked me to accompany him on the account that I become the new junior diplomatic ambassador. I couldn’t refuse, so now I’m here.”

Soru finds the situation particularly amusing. “Now that is quite the story!” His eyes catch Zuko, who is sitting quietly with nervous eyes across from him, and smirks. Looking at Giren, Soru immediately had confirmation of exactly what was going on. He places his hand on Sana’s arm (intentionally) with almost theatrical interest. “I never imagined Earth Kingdom girls being as pretty as you, though. I’ve spent my entire life in the capital so I’ve never really seen the colonies or other parts of the world…”

By now Zuko doesn’t even know why he’s so upset, but something about Soru complimenting Sana just got to him. Of course Sana is pretty, that should be obvious to anyone with eyes! However, he highly doubted anyone in the Earth Kingdom, let alone the rest of the world, could ever be as pretty as Sana Beifong.

“Trust me, half the upper-class girls in the Earth Kingdom aren’t half as pretty as dear Sana, Soru.” Giren rolls his eyes. “There aren’t many girls at all in our tracks at school, but the ones who visit the tea shops we visit definitely are not a worthy comparison.”

“Well, I am from a region outside of Ba Sing Se, Ren. Maybe Gaoling’s standard of beauty just differs?” Sana tries to reason, but she’s also covering her mouth to hide a humored smile.

“Gaoling is mostly commoners aside from your family, and your sister is still a little kid. She has your mother’s genes like you do, but didn’t you tell me she’s not really into all the girly stuff like you are?”

“I suppose you are right about that…and Toph is more relaxed and casual than I am when she isn’t pretending around our parents.”

With a sigh, Zuko stands up to leave the room, loudly setting down his teacup. “I’m going to go train. Don’t bother looking for me.”

Confused, the remaining three watch him storm out. It was concerning behavior from the prince–especially since he only was so vocal or visibly upset when something genuinely bothered him. Sana is the most startled as she doesn’t know him as well, and immediately grows worried. Zuko didn’t want them looking for him, but Sana couldn’t help but leave the room soon after.

“Zuko…?”

The hallway is silent. By the time Sana had shut the large doors behind her, Zuko had left. She never saw him training in the palace while she was there. He often trained early in the morning before she woke up, wanting to spend his days with his friends (namely and (deep-down) particularly Sana). Zuko had only shown Sana areas of the palace that she would most likely frequent, and where he trained was not one of them.

“I guess I could go back to my room and write mother and father in the meantime…” she mutters under her breath in slight frustration, but her ears don’t register the disappointment in her voice. “I hope I didn’t upset him.”

Normally Sana wasn’t in her room during the afternoons, so seeing the golden sunlight in dappled patterns through the tree leaves stream in was a welcome and very pretty sight. The sun was just setting right about then, and sunsets were never as pretty back home. 

Grabbing some ink and parchment, she settles down at the table in the center of the room and begins to write.

Dear mother and father, as well as my dearest sister Toph,

I’ve enjoyed my first two weeks here in the Fire Nation more than I expected. I do miss you both and Toph greatly (please read this letter to her), but I do have good company in the palace. Prince Giren is in meetings much of every day, but he tries to join me for lunch before he has time off in the afternoons. I also have unexpectedly become friends with Prince Zuko who has been my companion throughout the day before Ren joins us. I would have assumed the princess, Azula, join us, but she seems to distance herself from her brother as much as possible–I don’t quite understand this as he is quite enjoyable to be around despite being rather quiet much of the time. 

Today the palace has become the host of some more visitors. Princess Azula’s friends are visiting, as well as Giren and Zuko’s other friend Soru. One of Azula’s friends Mai is Soru’s twin sister and they could not be more different. She seems to dislike me quite a bit from our first meeting despite me doing absolutely nothing for her to think so, but Soru is becoming a fast friend. I think the two of us are quite similar if you ignore how much he is like Giren.

Toph, I hope you aren’t missing me too much! I promise this summer will go by faster than you think. Hopefully during my stay I’ll be able to purchase some souveniers to remind me of my trip and I’ll be sure to get something nice for you. Maybe I’ll have it sent early so you have something to remember me by! I’m not entirely sure how mail works here, but I’ll ask Zuko or Giren if they recommend anything in particular.

Awaking with a jump, Sana realizes she had fallen asleep after finishing her letter. Luckily the ink had already dried. Hours had passed and the sun had long been set, engulfing her room in a blueish darkness that turned the reds a pretty violet color. Hearing her heavy door click open she turns around and is greeted by the sight of Hisa’s face lit by a candle’s flame. 

“Lady Sana? The princes have been wondering where you’ve been all day…”

“Hisa, you know you can just call me Sana, right?”

“Fine. Sana, your friends are concerned! What have you been doing all afternoon?”

A sigh leaves her lips as she sits up, but notices her hair in the mirror: it’s a bit messy now, fallen undone from the simple hairstyle she had worn today. Sana could care less, still tired from worry. “I suppose sleeping but I can hardly recall when I even fell asleep…”

Hisa rolls her eyes as she lights the lanterns and candles around the room. The warm light soon illuminates the space, the crimsons and amber gold tones more visible. “That doesn’t explain why you suddenly ran off during tea with Prince Giren and Lord Soru, though.”

“I was looking for Prince Zuko, but I figured he didn’t really want to see me if he had left…”

“The prince was training much of the afternoon, but a few hours ago he came to me and asked if I knew where you were.”

“Oh…” Sana says genuinely suprised. “He had just run off so suddenly I figured something was wrong.”

“Quite the opposite, actually.” Hisa gives the young lady a smile as she motions for her to come sit in the vanity chair. “He just doesn’t realize it yet. Boys can be quite stubborn and oblivious at times, even princes.”

Sana sighs, unsure how to take this information. “I still don’t really get you, Hisa.”

“You’re still a kid, that’s why. Spirits, the world is forcing you all to grow up so fast…” With a final tuck of a strand, Sana’s long black hair is pinned into a simple yet pretty updo. 

“You are not that much older than me!”

She’s only eighteen, still a young woman who’s barely an adult. “My mother’s business hadn’t been doing well and my father died in an invasion years ago. We needed money so I got a job in the palace as a maid. When Lady Sei arrived on account of her betrothal to Prince Lu Ten four years ago, I was assigned to her. I was your age, Sana.”

A crease appears in Sana’s brow. “And whose burden weighs on your memories?”

“So many…My mother’s, Lady Sei’s, even you now Sana. Please treasure what you have now, for my sake? Keep those who treasure you close to you and don’t let them get away…”

Dinner had already passed when Sana had woken up, so Hisa went to gather a small snack for her from the kitchen. Feeling guilty about making her friends worried earlier, she leaves her room to seek them out. 

Sana and Giren weren’t staying in the guest wing, but rather the hallway where the prince and princess had their rooms. The hall was always fairly quiet, seeing as it was far from the Fire Lord’s personal chambers closer to the war room. Her hair was taken out after chatting with Hisa for a few hours longer, having gotten ready for bed. Peeking out of her door, Sana did not expect to look down the hall and still see light seeping out from under Zuko’s door.

Gathering some courage, she makes her move. Quiet footsteps barely sounded against the floors, careful as to not to wake the other inhabitants of the wing. Sana raises her hand to knock on Zuko’s door, soft taps that were loud enough to be heard from inside.

He opened the door just a bit, slight surprise in his eyes. “Sana? What…What are you still doing up?”

“I figured I should come see you and noticed you were still up…” In the dim warm light reflected in her eyes, turning them more gold than green. “You were looking for me earlier?”

“None of us had seen you for hours, we were worried!” Anger fills the prince’s voice, his hand gripping onto the door since he didn’t know if it was proper to reach out hand hold her. “I was worried…” He thinks to himself.

“I only ran off because I was worried I had upset you…”

“Oh…” Zuko blinks. “You could never upset me, I hope you know that.”

“Oh.”

“Would you…like to come in?” He opens the door a little but more.

Sana glances off to the side. “I really shouldn’t…” A soft sigh escapes her lips. “It’s late.”

A small groan sounds from Zuko. Why did the girl have to be so frustrating? “ Just come in!” He grabs her wrist, pulling her into his chambers. 

Her eyes glare at him, but even a dumbass like Zuko could tell she held no malice in them. “You are insane, Zuko! What are you thinking, you idiot? If someone sees us–!” 

Putting a hand over her mouth, Zuko uses his other arm to shut his door. “Everyone is asleep, Sana. And honestly, I don’t think anyone would really care about you being in my room.”

Her cheeks flush, but Zuko didn’t notice in the low lighting. “You are such an idiot.”

He shoots her a smile. “Don’t pretend like you don’t enjoy my company.”

That night, the two of them stayed up, chatting and laughing quietly together. Zuko’s light stayed on, seeping through the door until the early morning. The pair had drifted to sleep at some point early in the morning. Escaping back to her room before anyone could see them together alone in his room, Sana quietly closes Zuko’s door with a smile. Maybe this summer was turning out better than she expected.

I hated growing up in Howard County Maryland, and I still hate it

Mom raised me never to say the word hate. But after lab testing words like "loathe", "detest," "abhor"... "hate" is the most precise, respectfully.

tl;dr there is a lack of accessible third places where I grew up that makes life absolutely suffocating

Let me get the subjective points out of the way because, at the core, that is what colors my entire view. I had a very happy childhood in Cockeysville but our family moved to Woodstock next to Ellicott City when I was in middle school. The Baltimore suburbs were both "more suburban" (lots of forests) and lower-middle class than the area we moved into, but I felt so much loss when we moved. My parents, to their credit, were not helicopter parents and left us to figure out what to do, but this probably wasn't the right parenting style for the challenges I would have.

Objective point 1: incentives to live in isolated areas

We moved into a McMansion Lite single family, a decision that singlehandedly made me swear never to buy single family in my lifetime. It wasn't even that bad cuz right outside the subdivision were sidewalks that took you to...idk, friends, Waverly commerce, playgrou- aha! There are literally no playgrounds to walk to unless you're half a mile from the elementary school. This is a planning choice and one that has surprising cascading effects you only realize after you've moved to communities that have the amenity (more kids, more family socializing, more walking, etc.)

Howard County does have places with those amenities, ie., Columbia Association. Except! People who live there would rather be in the more prestigious school districts if they had the choice. CA has very nice amenities: trails to walk anywhere, access to Blandair, Lake Elkhorn, Lakefront, heck lakes everywhere!

But the "desirable" districts are like Clarksville and Marriottsville which are in Bumbleheck™ Nowhere. Back in the day the fastest way to get to my school friends would be to bike on MD-99. I consider myself a trendsetter because many people do this now, but back in 2003 when I did it I was the only one, and my mom was rationally incredibly terrified. People have bad incidents and there are no sidewalks at all. So in actuality, I spent the majority of my middle school hours depressed in front of the computer with the unfettered Internet.

Objective point 2: overrated

I actually don't have a problem with the last assertion: by all accounts the school programs are great (barring recent transportation issues). But let's go through the others.

HCPL should be ashamed. I'm not even talking about the proposed thing next to Whole Foods. Spring Break just passed and during that week, HCPL cancelled and renegged all events. Not a single thing for kids or community members to do that week. MCPL in contrast on any given day had 50-some odd events across the system. There's a likely reason: the staff takes a spring break to coincide with the school schedule. But that just reveals how little robustness there is in the system. The library should provide for the most vulnerable in the community whose families can't afford nice spring break programs. Utter failure.

Oh and before pointing to HoCo rec as the alternative, you pay out the nose for membership. MoCo rec is free with better facilities (but this is punching down).

Livable. Progressive. Anecdote: I was shocked when we had coed physical education in middle school. In Baltimore, I'll just say it, we had real physical education. Boys did pushups regularly. There were wrestling units. Weight lifting. Gymnastics. I just didn't think I could handle the pretentiousness of coed archery and wiffleball when I landed in Howard County, I just wasn't ready. Yes, gender distinction is a pretty sensitive topic now but the need for boys to be challenged...I felt was a miss.

The progressivism seems like such a hypocritical veneer when the slogan at the time was "Choose Civility." Such a dog whistle. Howard County is decidedly upward middle class or adjacent. If you don't own a car you don't have an existence.

In terms of culture and landmarks, the literal landmark in our district was the snowball stand. I just .... please just go visit a real mixed use lot and then come talk to me.

There was an attempt to put on an "Asian Night Market" event at the Fairgrounds and it was so awful it was on every news outlet: people stuck on Interstate 70 for hours, and vendors not prepared to distribution. There is clearly demand for the bored masses to want to have fun things but the infrastructure isn't there to support it.

Here are what the county thinks are the culture areas: downtown EC and lakefront. Historic EC... could be so much better!! There is so little room for people to congregate and yet the cars cut through endangering anyone who might want to space out. I'd rather hang out in Kentlands (whose road network is decidedly tempered) during a hurricane than suffer through downtown EC on a perfect day.

Oh and let's talk about lakefront. Recall my BS-meter raging when the society only endorses its version of progressivism or diversity. It seems like the county actively wants to punch young people in the dick: you're not allowed to dance at the lakefront, and you're not allowed to be at the mall after 6 without an adult.

The lakefront is so lamentably sad now, which I'll explain in another point below.

Objective point 3: Route 40 is the ugliest ugly to ever ugly on this side of ugly

And recently designated a new cultural landmark!

Route 40 deserves its own hate section. It's possible most locals would agree with the statement that the Route 40 corridor is the heart and soul of Ellicott City.

And yet if you told a naive tourist that and dropped them there, what reaction would you expect? I think you'd get a resounding "double you tee eff."

what's the difference?

This is just such a perfect specimen of American commercial sprawl, way too perfect <🤌chef's kiss>. This area espouses what creed? "To be here, you must consume."

Where do you hang out? Like where can you kick it with friends? When I hung out with bethel kids it was in front of McD or Checkers, which were fun and affordable, but overall it did seem like in order to socialize you need to spend money, consume, and drive. I'm being completely serious when I unironically think the best third place option is the center with Sprouts Market. There's sidewalks you can walk between smoothie, gamestop, wingstop, and some chipotle.

You may have thought, "Oh! Not the center with Honeypig and trendy Cafe June?" Well to get between those places you need to first get run over by 3 minor arterials, and yea none of these businesses (even Roggenart) bother with outdoor seating cuz....... freaking Route 40.

Objective point 4: things have gotten worse

I'm lying, things have gotten so much better since I've been a kid. So many more fun places to eat and hang out.

But some bulwarks of why Howard County is "worth it" are starting to shake. Buses are failing to pick up kids so kids end up missing school. What? Turf Valley home invasion and kids mugged at Waverly pool in broad daylight. Excuse me? What's even the point of living in this desolate suburb then if we dealing with "city" problems 🤣🤣

The lakefront is a shell of what it was and can be. This past Sunday was the most amazing weather and... absolutely no one was at the lakefront. The "coolest" thing there is Whole Foods where the whole point is to get in and out with your food. The pub on the corner has no outdoor seating. No one patronizing any of the (checks notes) four businesses. I won't explicitly punch down with the infinite examples of peer counties proactively stimulating cultural life, but I've already ranted in the above points about how everything reeks of proactive suppression of life and frankly NIMBYism of folks probably just not allowing more business and development.

In conclusion

Please do not read "Howard county is the worst." It is not. It is a very decent place to live. Which just speaks to American standards of living tbh. This is squarely a personal write-up of why I hate Howard County. Over the years I got NUMTOTed to high heaven and finally have the vocabulary to identify the childhood dissonance.

My happiest memories are here. Would I have gotten into bboying without the boredom? Would I have become a Christian without the quirky friends and desolation? Would I have crumbled in the face of crazier competition of high-achieving Chinese kids in Montgomery County? How much of the neurosis is simply a function of my family culture regardless of where I lived? Did the gentle and stable environment allow me to ultimately thrive and succeed? The answer to these counterfactuals could fall on either side.
