New trek writers are like i know how to write vulcans and then i watch them nearly maim themselves trying to eek out a narrative that only has the depth and weight of a saltine cracker.
Like Voyager GAVE you the groundwork to understand the vulcans. Its not that they do not have fun or lack emotions its that they feel so much they have to keep total control of it and direct themselves with rationale/logic. They have an entire culture based around doing CBTherapy on themselves bc they want to live normal lives instead of being subjected to their brains chemistry overload like. Its not hard. We have books. We have books to understand these things and maybe if you like, thought abt writing them as a people instead of a mascot animal you could make a show stick a landing without its legs shattering into a billion pieces

dou think that in tos, spock and kirk came up with that "green light" thing they used as code in the gangster episode - which was after the time kirk was imitated by an android and he had to make it say "im sick of yr [slur] interference" so he would know it was the android not the captain, and then the spores episode where he had to make spock mad and just LAID IN on everything about his half Vulcan ancestry - bc spock was eventually like
"Captain. Jim. I get these are important, delicate situations. And you have to get a message through to me. But can you try to be like...a TINY bit less racist. Do you think you can fucking try to manage like. 1% less racism. Just a TINY BIT. YOU DONT HAVE TO SAY IM A GREEN BLOODED [SLURS] COMPUTER FREAK. CAN YOU JUST FUCKING SAY THE WORD GREEN. I PROMISE YOU I WILL KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN."

today is also a great day to check what's up in your area regarding unhoused people's right to exist in public. criminalization of homelessness has been a thing for a while and (from what I can tell anyway) is getting worse. it might look like
camping bans
tent sweeps
"no backpacks" rules (in libraries, stores, etc)
"no loitering" signs in public places
hostile architecture
laws against sitting on sidewalks
shelter closures
discriminatory shelter policies
separate courts for unhoused people
today (any day) is a great day to take a stand locally against these kinds of attempts to sweep unhoused people "elsewhere" when A) there is nowhere for them to go and B) they have as much right to be part of our communities as you and I and anyone else.
this is an escalating issue in a ton of places right now. in my experience, it often occurs first at the city/town level. in the US, though, there's now significant threats at state level as well (check out this tracker).
I feel some frustration with food banks being the first thing many people think of re: this issue, because like...food donations are important! but food banks will often also get donations from local politicians and businesses trying to Show How Much They Care. and that doesn't stop those same businesses from turning around and calling the cops on folks sleeping under their awning. it doesn't stop those politicians from requiring absolute nightmare levels of red-tape to get a shelter bed--and combining that with regular sweeps of any tent encampments.
so if you'd like to commemorate the days Sisko, Dax, and Bashir will have been being spent* in the thick of the Bell Riots, please
learn something new about government and business discrimination against unhoused ppl near you (these things are frequently in the local news, though the takes are often absolutely rancid)
dig around to find out who already opposes that bullshit (an organization? the unhoused teen you wave to on the corner most mornings? your church group?)
pick one way to join them in defending your community against the criminalization of homelessness (doing food distribution? writing a letter to the editor re: a news article that's biased against unhoused ppl? physically adjusting some hostile infrastructure? attending an eviction defense rally that you see announced?)
remember, we're all much closer to being unhoused than we are to being upper-class.
*tense is, truly, tricky for time-travel.
THE BELL RIOTS
This is just to say the Bell Riots don't take place on August 30th. That's the day Sisko, Dax, and Bashir will have been being arrived* in San Francisco. The Riots will be September 1-3, 2024.
That said, instead of rioting, today I honored Gabriel Bell's heroics with a donation to a couple of charities that help the unhoused and the hungry. I've donated to the Hollywood Food Coalition and the SF Marin Food Bank:
Hollywood Food Coalition Building Community since 1987 - Hollywood Food Coalition (hofoco.org)
San Francisco-Marin Food Bank - Every $1 Donated Provides 2 Meals‎ (sfmfoodbank.org)
I made the donations "In Memory of Gabriel Bell." Please consider honoring Gabriel Bell with donations of your own to these or other organizations that helped the unhoused.
Thank you! Stay safe out there. Live long and prosper!

Meet the seven new frog species we just named after iconic Star Trek captains!

At the right time of year along rushing streams in the humid rainforests that stretch the length of Madagascar's eastern and northern mountain ridges, otherworldly trills of piercing whistles can be heard.
Are they birds? Insects? Communicator beeps? Tricorder noises?
No, they're little treefrogs!

Until recently, we thought all of the populations of these little brown frogs across the island were one widespread species, Boophis marojezensis, described in 1994. But genetics in the early 2000s and 2010s showed that there were several species here, not just one.
Now my colleagues and I have shown that they are in fact eight separate species, each with unique calls!
These whistling sounds reminded us so much of Star Trek sound effects that we decided to name the seven new species after Star Trek captains: Boophis kirki, B. picardi, B. janewayae, B. siskoi, B. pikei, B. archeri, and B. burnhamae.

I subtly and not-so-subtly built some Star Trek references into the paper, but probably the best one is this one:
'Finding these frogs sometimes requires considerable trekking; pursuing strange new calls, to seek out new frogs in new forests; boldly going where no herpetologist has gone before.'
— Vences et al. 2024
There’s a real sense of scientific discovery and exploration here, which we think is in the spirit of Star Trek.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that there are at least two Trekkies amongst the authors (including yours truly). As fans of Star Trek, we are also just pleased to dedicate these new species to the characters who have inspired and entertained us over the decades.
On a personal note, this marks a milestone for me, as it means I have now described over 100 frog species! I am very pleased that the 100th is Captain Janeway's Bright-eyed Frog, Boophis janewayae (if you count them in order of appearance in the paper)—she is probably my favourite captain, and I really love Star Trek: Voyager.
You can read more about the discovery of these new species on my website! You can also read the Open Access paper published in Vertebrate Zoology here.

I believe the new trek writers should be paid fairly, but i also believe they should maybe do some reading on social topics and retake some beginner writing courses
