I noticed some lovely #lindenflowers on a lime tree just off Church Street this week. I sometimes struggle to ID Lime from Hazel on leaves alone but seeing these flowers makes it unmistakable! Lovely smell and also super useful apparently - linden flowers have historically been used to treat anxiety and aid relaxation. It’s especially good for kids apparently - make an infusion and throw it in a child’s bath if you want to calm your wrestle-maniac 6 year old before bed. Found this little cutie at work this week. I noticed that the needles came in clusters of threes, and was so mesmerized by the needles coming out of the trunk that I didn’t bother taking a picture of the canopy. The bark came in long plates.

According to my Sibley pine, needles of three and broad orange plates of bark likely place this pine in the yellow pine group. If I were to pick a species, I would have to call this a pitch pine (Pinus rigida), because it and pond pine are the only pines that have tufts of needles coming out of their trunks.

Let me know if you have other thoughts!

My son and I used some of the oak leaves collected at the weekend to make some leaf prints in air dry clay. It’s great to do this to examine the detail of the leaf especially its outline/ shape and edge, midrib and veins. I also ran this activity with a group of 8-9 year olds the other week (I’m also volunteering occasionally at a Forest School) and they adored it. Can anyone id this tree for me? It's growing in a fairly small, moderately dense mixed wood (mostly pitch pines, maples, and oaks, smattering of several other deciduous species), several hundred yards from a large pond. Trees were generally upright; trunks were slightly crooked but not generally forked. Skinny trees (maybe 8” diameter) were probably thirty or forty feet tall with most of the branches and foliage concentrated at the top (as generally expected in the woods). Simple, alternately attached, lanceolate leaves, dark green above, very pale whitish green below. Serrate margin, veins are maybe arcuate?
