Composting: How To

Starting in 2022, California is mandating that everyone puts composting materials into ones green trash bin. Now, I have to start off by saying that I do not hate this idea. I kind of do so now but not fully? I also will admit that I do not fully utilize my composting materials. But for Cali to tell me to do so, how are they going to mandate it? In December of 2021, there was a strike amongst trash collectors and being able to have one bin last a couple of weeks without getting picked up became...helpful. 

What is Composting? 

Compost is a mixture of ingredients used to fertilize and improve the soil. It is commonly prepared by decomposing plant and food waste and recycling organic materials. The resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organisms, such as worms and fungal mycelium. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compost) 

What does that mean? When one cooks, if you make eggs save the egg shells in a specific container. If you cut up vegetables, put the leftovers you would typically throw away into a container. I think you are supposed to replant the “leftovers” in ones backyard to help the plants. 

How To Compost:

To prepare to compost, I suggest getting a large container (or multiple containers) to put on your countertop so that when you are cleaning up or prepping, you can put the appropriate ingredients in the allocated locations. If you save your containers from purchases like cookie dough and pasta, those can do nicely until you find what makes sense for you. If you have a bit of budget, try going to your local Ross/TJMaxx/Marshalls and see what you can find. 

I ended up going to dollar tree, as I wanted big enough to hold things while it was lightweight but not so big that a pile sits there long enough to grow mold before you take it outside. With containers at dollar tree and labels...it also saved space, since the space of 3 containers stacked is the space one glass mason like jar would of taken in my kitchen. I labeled them as such: 

Egg Shells, Tea/Coffee, Vegetables/Fruit

Why the separation? If you are just going to toss them in your green container, get one giant mason jar and just empty that before trash day each week. If you are going to use them for not trash conservation purposes...separate them. Coffee grounds and egg shells are good for plants, and if you put vege/fruit bits into the dirt it helps revitalize dirt for possibly new plants. This could open the door to even planting your own food and herbs. 

I think its definitely more of a millennial thing to think of how our everyday actions can help preserve the planet we call home. But its one of the only real “millennial” things about me really. Most of my bathroom stuff, with the exception of toilet paper, is reusable or recyclable. Give it a try and let me know how it goes! Ya know, if you google how to reuse just about anything, there will be a way to get more or give more...always!
