Learn to appreciate your own work:

You will never know how to accept a compliment from someone else if you cannot see the merits in your own work. You have to learn to love your work yourself first, independent from everyone else’s opinion, before you try to garner approval from them. So how do you go about this? Reread your work and try to find your favourite parts: What is a line you really enjoyed writing? DId you enjoy reading it just as much as you intended for the reader to enjoy it? Did any other lines catch your eye that, during the writing process, you didn’t even realize were so profound or impactful? What about the characters? Whose your favourite? Who makes you laugh the most? Who would you most likely be friends with? Whose very presence in a scene makes you want to commit a felony? By finding the components of your writing that evoke an emotional response from you, you allow yourself to be emotionally impacted– and by extension (hopefully) emotionally attached– to your work. Find the gems in your writing that make your book the favourite on your future shelf. Art and Moodboards! Create art (doodles, sketches, paintings) for your ocs, certain scenes in your books, settings, landscapes, aesthetics, outfits, or all of the above! Moodboards using Pinterest and Shuffle also help if you don’t want to draw, or commissions from artists. Lowkey, I’d be down to open commissions for oc artwork in the writeblr community, but idk i’m just throwing stuff out there. The point is, plenty of artists and writers offer their services to draw, or you can take up the skill yourself and give it a shot! The point of this is to get yourself excited for your writing. Why? That brings me to my next point. Treat your book like it’s already published with an established fandom, and you’re its biggest fan? What kind of fan behaviour are you engaging in? Headcanons? Incorrect quotes? Character edits? Song designation to certain scenes or ocs? Fanfics of fluff scenes? Guess what, chief? You’re the author. Not only do you get to do all that stuff, but it gets to be canon if you want it to be. Or, you can be like me and gatekeep an entire wiki page in your Notion/the drafts for no one to see unless they beg for it. It’s your perogative. But be your biggest fan until someone else comes along, recognizes your passion, and challenges you for that title.

Share your work, and your reactions to your work:

Everything we just did in tip one, I want you to go ahead and share it on your writeblr. Let the community see how much you care about this project of yours. The parts that make you cry; the parts that wrench your heart out,; the parts that were so cinematically aesthetic, you just HAD to draw it. Let the community see not only the fruits of your labour, but the ones you found sweet enough to call nectar. Let them feast on that ambrosia and join the fandom.

Accept feedback graciously:

It’s never easy getting criticism on your work. Whether its positive or negative feedback, the most important thing to do is not react to it defensively. Instead, thank the person who took time out of their day to try and help you fine-tune your craft by giving you tips to improve it. Then, reflect on the feedback and how it aligns or misaligns with your vision. Is this feedback derailing the intentions you have as a creator? If so, how do you try to incorporate the advice so that you are able to stay true to your vision and represent it in a way that allows readers to appreciate it the same way you do.

The most important part of receiving feedback is being open to it. If you close yourself off to changing your work or others’ opinions, you are limiting your potential for growth. Assume the best of intentions from people who comment on your work, and take it with a grain of salt when applying it to your project. Ultimately, you know your project best, but the community will try to help you enhance your work to make it better. The best thing you can do for the trajectory of your writing career is take what they say– not to heart, but to the mind for further reflection.

I genuinely don’t know how this turned into a toolbox post LMAO. I had another post in queue today, but I saw this reblog and had to respond. If you guys have any additional tips, comment below! It’s always a join to help the community out, since I know how much we all deal with this.

Obviously, since I made the og post, I deal with it too. But these tips are what help me trust myself and my writing, and affirm to myself that no matter how undeserving I feel of praise, my book is good enough. And most importantly, I enjoy it.

how i do my drawing style (obv not every thing is for everyone and this is how i personally do it art are not rules but exploration)

i draw with my palm resting on the tablet, i cant do super precise movements with my hands so i use thick lineart and a bunch of stabilizer for that. if i need long lines i can just lift my hands. i use a 2016 samsung tablet after i switched from the horrible sliperry drawing tablet

currently i use a "pen" brush with opacity AND size jitter so it can sketch and line when i want. ON GREATER BLENDING MODE, this gives a marker sort of look (lines wont overlap)

canvas is 1000x1000 because my tablet is slow and also pixely crunchhhh

my sketches are shapes and dynamics first then anatomy second, in my process i find that treating the sketch as a "newgrounds funky shape artstyle" kind of thing makes things fall in place much smoother too so thats a bonus, and also obv i like it that way lol, its much looser and less stressful, eyeball is my guide. when done my way it looks "imprecise".

I grabbed my shapes/dynamics principles from some of what sinix does and the anatomy/gesture is like 2 bites of knowledge from anatomy guides (the ones who helped me with the style most were the ones who focused in dynamics) furry anatomy was by looking at art and photos, but 80% was just me messing around and finding out

generally i do my sketches in one layer because i softly erase instead of making a new layer (too much work and i cant do really precise strokes) this makes some soft sketchy lines a bit visible, i make a outline if i think the color is drowning the lineart

use curve adjustment to make soft strokes less visible and stronger strokes more visible, i do this because i really like how for me it creates more space for color/shading to fit in

either use 'enclose and fill' tool from krita or just make blocks of color by hands, i make a loot of layers in this process because i like to finetune the colors to my liking and to shade cleanly

currently the way i pick colors isnt too crazy, mostly its based on color theory ideas and my own taste as the judge, if i feel experimental i will try to make some "weird/wrong" color decisions to make it a bit more fun.

as for the color theory what i apply from there is mostly relations with hue saturation and value and my own personal understanding on how they interact together (quick example, for me increasing the saturation of a color "darkens" it a bit)

after this i paint/shade, i try to make it look fun, i use a basic round brush with opacity for more control

after this i make collages backgrounds on my computer WITH ALSO KRITA, my sources of images vary (wikimedia commons, tumblr blogs, pinterest, flickr)

the way i get this specific look is to mess around with some photo manipulation (curves adjustment blending modes), i like krita because it gives you a bajillion filters and blending modes

my favorite ones: "gradient map", "color to alpha (removes background)", "cross channel adjustment" "levels", "hsv adjustment", "curve adjustment" BLENDING MODES: "hard mix (photoshop)", all of modulo blending modes, "overlay", "hard overlay", "lighten", "darken", "dissolve"

mostly what i do on images is bump saturation on hsv adjustment (krita legacy mode on hs vadjustment makes colors a bit more distorted), cut some greens on levels, compress blues and reds, compress saturation, decrease the lightness range and adjust hue a bit if needed, mess with noise and layers. mostly i keep in mind to make the lightness range different from the subject so it doesnt melt together,

if you want more distortion compres with levels and use posterize

glaze on my windows virtual machine (i use linux lol) on high on low quality (this is to protect from theft but also gives a funky filter)

When Life Hands You Lemons

The semester is starting to wind down these days, especially for my grad students, whose term lasts only 13 weeks. It may seem like it is long at times, but it really is fast. And like many other semesters before, we have been treated to some very newsworthy, sometimes amusing, other times anger-inspiring, events that cause us to stand up and pay attention.



Like the ongoing worries over TikTok and whether it should be banished not just in individual states and on their government-owned devices, but nationwide. Australia just announced its complete ban on government-owned devices. In the US, in a rather odd come-together moment for the Right and Left, there is momentum to ban it here as well.



It’s just that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has more ammo in its case. The top apps right now for lifestyle and video editing are owned by them: Lemon8 and CapCut. Take that, you pompous lawmakers. We’re not just going to roll over and die.



CapCut is a handy tool for creating the reels that users post to TikTok or elsewhere. I only learned about it this last weekend from my oldest daughter, who said that “everyone’s using it” at the digital marketing agency she calls her professional home. Me, I use Mojo, which, for all I know, could be owned by ByteDance as well. She says it is much better than Mojo. I messaged Oldest Daughter yesterday about CapCut’s owner, and I could almost hear her gulp all the way from Dallas.



And then there’s Lemon8, the new social media app that is designed to take on both Instagram and Pinterest. But in the case of Lemon8, it’s only new to the US. Launched in 2020 to little fanfare, ByteDance kept it in limited circulation until now.

And now we know why.

Lemon8 is not an exact Instagram clone, however, focusing—at least for now—on fashion, food, wellness, and travel, among other general interest topics. Like BeReal, it shuns pretense, and urges users not to stage photos like many we see on Insta. The site also encourages users to include direct links to where viewers can buy featured products.

My question now is whether a ban on TikTok would also include a ban on Lemon8 and CapCut. And even if it does, what’s to stop ByteDance from continuing to roll out new apps to dodge federal bullets? Will it boil down to banishing all Chinese-owned apps, like Pinduoduo and Shein? This could lead to war, you know.

Which makes me begin to wonder if all this pomp and circumstance, this drum-beating, is an exercise in futility. Short of erecting a massive firewall around us, like the Chinese do to keep out western media, there’s little that can be done. Worse yet, it leads to frustrations among the people, especially when we live in a place that espouses First Amendment rights and freedoms. Fire up the VPN, as I have said before, and hope you don’t get caught. I hear that Chinese citizens can be in serious trouble if they do so. The last thing we need is a similar clamp down.

The other part of me wonders how people can continue to absorb so many social media sites. I am not opposed to the development of new ones at all. It’s just that there are still only 24 hours in the day, and I have a hard enough time just attending to Meta’s Facebook and Instagram. I have work to do, you know. Heck, my LinkedIn looks like a ghost page. I guess if I were looking for a job, I’d hop on it.

All of which means we are continuing to slice the market into ever smaller pieces, and as long as it can be done profitably, new sites will continue to roll out. Stir on the controversy of Chinese ownership, and Ima gonna have things to write about for a long, long time.

Let the user beware. There may be someone in Beijing looking over your shoulder.

I'm a bit worried about my future, like im scared it may not be what I want. I know it's dumb to worry about something that hasn't happened but I can't help but fear for the worst.

I wanna explore the world, sing to thousands of people an make new friends, I wanna get rich and give it all away, I wanna find true love and happiness and hopefully get married, I wanna build my dream home with my dream closet, I want to experience a deep tub where i can put BOTH my legs and torso in the water, I wanna learn the basics of atleast 6 languages, I wanna learn how to play as many instruments as possible.. the list goes on but i just wanna live a good life. I dont have to be insanely rich but i dont want to work my life away at a soul crushing job where i only get 1 week of vacay a year that ill never get to use cause i cant afford it..

If I ever have kids they might be mad at me because when I die I plan to donate it all to charities. I doubt ill ever have kids as im to scared of being a bad mom. With my insomnia and depression I dont think id be a good parent so it would be wrong for me to welcome life into the world or adopt without working on my self first. i think id be a good mother once ive truly healed myself and prepared for a child.

ive already made seceral pinterest boards, vision boards, and collections of my ideal future life like my house, wedding, pets, potential children, clothes, etc etc I can see it all but it feels so unreachable and i dont understand why.. maybe its the depression? i try not to let it affect me to much but its stupid little clawd manage to dig into my skin. Its like fighting the devil with both your hands tied behind you back and a feather in youd mouth as a weapon.. You might win if you can tickle i guess

I like treating ttmblr like a personal blog or twitter for my thoughts. it help relieve my stress and depression a bit. one of the first things i did directly after logging back into this (probably) five-year-old account was to investigate whoever the hell my two followers were.

one of them was, of course, a bot. @cheezbot (?) to be specific.

1) what's actually, the point of bots? it seems like this one reblogs random (non-cheese related, may i add) posts. yay...interaction? but literally maybe just buy followers at that point?

2) how did he find me, of all users (inactive for long enough to be shocked that my account hadn't been deactivated)? i'm quite glad he did though to be honest, since he's actually reblogged some really nice photography and cute paintings.

part of me definitely adores and naturally came back to the versatility of this platform. although i wasn't a huge user when i was younger (12/13/14), i distinctly remember how artsy it was. as i was typing up tumblr into the google search bar to log in, i could almost picture the standard blog homepage. i'm glad it hasn't changed much.

anyway yes yes, back to the other follower.

having spent around 90% of my childhood staring into screens, i thought i'd seen every strange thing the internet has to offer. from talking to older men and boys on discord, to darknet browsing on tor, to my weird best friend and her best gore obsession, to 'thinspo' on pinterest, to hours lost browsing furry art and mind rot on deviantart, and gradually developing into a longstanding on/off porn addiction - treating it either as an antidote for my boredom or a learning resource.

i haven't had the healthiest relationship with it. but in my defense, no one (*cough cough* my lacklustre parents *cough cough*) told me to do otherwise. i was out of their hands, i can't blame them. and they had no idea of the potential power the internet could hold over someone.

this other follower was a prime example of a strange internet fetish. and after having written all that, i don't think its too outrageous compared to some of the material that i was exposed to as a child.

honestly, maybe my intense reaction is a good sign? a way to show that my baseline has returned to somewhat normal.

it was full of (what i'd consider) cpr porn. there was no piv, just long, slow shots of naked women and their breasts being shaken by the electric shockwaves.

i have two other theories for why this shocked me more than i expected it two, but i'll only go over them in brief.

the part i liked the least is that i enjoyed it for a moment. i want to say that i only enjoyed it up until i realised the woman was incapacitated, myocardially infarcted, possibly dead. but i enjoyed it for a moment after.

this feels brual and horrible to write, but at the same time freeing. i think that part of my brain has still been impacted by the strange upbringing i had. the more i write this, the more seperate i feel from the online identity i experienced and created when i was younger. i feel more and more that reactions like these aren't my fault.

so long as i do my best to actively better myself - and although i haven't experienced any of this for a while - still maintain my distance from the internet - i should be okay.

Yeah, I do NOT want an algorithm. I choose to stay on tumblr because I like to curate what I see myself. I used to be on facebook and twitter and pinterest and the moment they changed from being places where you got to see what you chose to see and instead starting seeing stuff the site's algorithm decided you wanted to see, I left or otherwise stopped using them.

Tumblr took me all of a few seconds to figure out when I joined all those years ago, and now I have a bunch of side blogs as well as my main. Because I like to curate my experience so much that I have different places to reblog different things. I'm already connected seamlessly to the content I want!

This blog is where I put stuff which is just a big WHAT THE FUCK? Sometimes its funny stuff, sometimes its stuff like this. That's what I think of these proposed changes. I think they're a mess that's going to totally ruin the tumblr experience. And if it changes too much past what it currently is, well, I will leave like I've left all the other sites. There's not really anywhere else that I could go, but I could cope without. Spend more time doing other things instead of being online.

Tumblr doesn't need to grow exponentially. It needs to be able to work towards breaking even or making a small profit, but it is not going to do that if the userbase expands too much too quickly. People coming from other sites they didn't pay for and didn't buy merch for are not going to magically convert into people paying to support tumblr. If you are struggling to get loyal long term members to pay, then you're not going to get newbies paying.

I'd consider paying for ad free if it also got rid of sponsored posts. Those repeat way too often when I'm using the website on my tablet. On my laptop I use an adblocker to get rid of them. But the browser extension doesn't work in the tablet browser. As it stands, the only advert slot that would get hidden by paying for ad free is one small square on the right hand side of the screen, but most of the time its blank on my tablet. The info states sponsored posts are exempt which just means advertisers pay for sponsored posts instead of ad slots, making the ad free totally and utterly pointless. Make it possible to hide all sponsored posts and sure, maybe I'd drop a few pounds a year to help support the site rather than use an adblocker as much as possible.

As it is, I purchased the blue checkmarks, had them turn rainbow when they all turned rainbow for free and then later you decided to make rainbow a separate paid for option and they went back to blue. And to swap to the same number of rainbow pixels, I'm expected to pay all over again even though they were originally made rainbow for free. Contacted support and was told it was a bug they were working on and they should go back to rainbow. And to let them know in a few weeks if it still wasn't sorted. When I contacted again I was told that actually I had to buy them all over again actually and there was "nothing they could do". It would have been simple enough just to swap them over since they cost the same amount, but no. If we are meant to be customers, then perhaps there needs to be some kind of customer service? It doesn't make me want to pay for anything else if I'm treated like my investment doesn't matter to the company. Because that's what buying the silly pixels was - an investment in tumblr.

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content. 

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Retain and grow our creator base.

Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up. 

We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.

Actions & Next Steps

Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.

Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.

Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.

The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.

Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant.

Deliver great content each time the app is opened.

Make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are. 

Improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds. 

Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.

Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.

Actions & Next Steps

Address the confusion within replies and reblogs.

Improve the conversational posting features around replies and reblogs. 

Allow engagements on individual replies and reblogs.

Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread. 

Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads. 

Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed. 

Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.

Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.  

Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.

The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.

It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.

Actions & Next Steps

Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it. 

Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.

Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.

Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.

Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.

Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.  

Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.  

Actions & Next Steps

Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.

Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.  

Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages. 

Test what the right daily push notification limit is. 

Send emails when a user has push notifications switched off.

Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.

The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.

Improve quality: deliver the highest quality Tumblr experience to our users. 

Move faster: provide APIs and services to unblock core product initiatives and launch new features coming out of Labs.

Hello hi and welcome! this blog is something that popped into my head some time ago and I realised that its long overdue that I started this lil project! I currently run a studyblr called @studying-with-k which is usually a record of my academia life and stuff around it! so I think an introduction is in order!

My name is K, I am 22 years old and I am currently working on myself and becoming someone who wants a peaceful life but also wants to wander the world and experience different things.

HEATHER FUCKING SUCKS — Heather has historically been a classic mean girl. She’s Heather Chandler but a brunette. She SUCKS. She’s the kinda of person who insults you “as a joke” then says you’re being “too sensitive” when you call her out on it. She’s entitled and petty and mean spirited. She also makes a lot of sex jokes n shit. Naturally post season 3 she um, has a bit of a change of heart but she’s still kinda of a bitch. Just you know, more of a lovable one.

HEATHER DOESN’T DATE — Or at least she has not historically. While Heather isn’t “naturally aroace” for lack of a better phrasing she is very sex/romance adverse at this point in her life. She spent her tween years watching her older sister be torn apart by an abusive relationship that no one helped her escape and in fact supported at times and the majority of her social group since like, middle school have been untrustworthy as per popular mean girl traditions. She also barely escaped the worst of a grooming situation with her piano teacher in middle school. So the emotional/physical vulnerability of romance, sex and even just genuine platonic interaction can be very scary to her. She will mask it with aggression and making it seem like no one in Hawkins is good enough for her but she distinctly avoids romantic situations and reacts EXTREMELY negatively to them.

Characters are welcome to assume she’s doing all the normal teen stuff they are or believe whatever rumors about her getting with someone that are flying around ( bc you know they exist ) but that’s gonna be a misconception on their end. How much people notice of this behavior is really up to you and how close/perceptive they are. This doesn’t mean shipping is off the table for her, just that it’ll require more than the usual amount of plotting and time to get there. She’s shipping nightmare mode and slow burn only.

Heather and Billy are Kind of A Hivemind — this really only applies to my depiction of Heather in conjunction with my depiction of Billy ( @mtvatlas​ ) for the sake of other people’s vibes. But the idea here is that they survived the flaying because once the gate was shut the secondary nervous system or whatever the Mindflayer was using to control them went dormant which freed them from its control. They’re only a hivemind, like all the flayed are to an extent, when the gate is open/the MF/Vecna is Up To Something. If other’s are interested in playing around with this idea in our rp that’s cool! I’m not just forcing it on any Billys/Flayed folks or anything like that.
