Tech Fun Fact #7
The term “kin”, in contexts of fictionkin or otherkin, actually originated from a Lord of the Rings forum! Some members of the forum felt as if they where spiritually elves from the series, and thus coined the term “Elfkin”. When other kintypes appeared, Elfkins assigned them as “Otherkin”, which is where the term comes from!

Alex Nguyen at Mother Jones:
Long gone are the innocent days when media outlets claimed the independence and nuance of the politics of Elon Musk. Now, amid myriad X posts spreading far-right propaganda on immigrants, trans people, and, well, just about any other topic, it has become obvious where one of the richest men in the world stands. This week, there was more proof that Musk has put his money where his mouth has been. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Musk poured tens of millions of dollars into Republican campaigns and conservative groups even before he publicly endorsed Donald Trump in July. Conservatives helped conceal Musk’s contributions through so-called social welfare or “dark money” groups that do not have to disclose their donors and can raise unlimited funds. (Musk did not respond to the Journal’s request for comment.) One piece of reporting stood out. The newspaper found that the tech billionaire donated more than $50 million in 2022 for campaign advertisements by Citizens for Sanity, a group connected to former Trump aide Stephen Miller and his non-profit America First Legal, which bills itself as “the long-awaited answer to the ACLU.”  Ties to Miller back in 2022 illuminate Musk’s current penchant for posting about immigrants. Musk has increasingly aligned himself with xenophobic anti-migrant plans and trans hysteria championed by Miller within the Trump administration.
[...] In recent months, Musk’s posts have sunken to lies of mass voter fraud to help Trump win. As I reported, the billionaire recently posted a rant about how Democrats are the true threat to democracy by fast-tracking asylum seekers for citizenship so that they can vote in swing states. Simple fact-checking finds that asylum seekers are not being flown to battleground states, are not being given a facilitated citizenship process, and are not being allowed to vote—it is all false.  As we previously noted, these statements fall within the 2024 iteration of the Republicans’ “Big Lie.” If Trump loses in November, then Democrats stole the election through noncitizen voters.  Musk has also directly aligned himself with Trump, founding a super PAC called America PAC to get 800,000 people to vote for the former president in key battleground states. According to the Guardian, Trump’s ground operation in swing states are now mostly outsourced to America PAC, and Business Insider said that Musk is now shelling out millions to Republicans in 15 competitive House races. Yesterday, Politico reported that America PAC was teaming up with Turning Point Action, the political advocacy division of Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA, to fund hundreds of “ballot chasers” in Wisconsin.
A Wall Street Journal reports that right-wing X owner Elon Musk has been funding anti-immigrant propaganda, including funding $50M to right-wing group linked to Stephen Miller called Citizens For Sanity (or more accurately, Citizens For Insanity).

Book Recs Based on TV Shows
If you like My Adventures With Superman then you might like reading Dreadnought!
Dreadnought is a superhero duology written by April Daniels with a trans-fem main character.
Danielle has always known that she is a girl, even if her family refused to see her as anything but a stereotypical-masculine-man. But that all changed when Earth's greatest hero Dreadnought falls from the sky and dies in her arms, gifting his powers and mantle onto her. The mantle transforms Danny's body into the feminine body she always wanted.
Now unable to hide her trans identity from her parents and her status as the 4th Dreadnought from the world, Danny's life is thrown into chaos. Her best friend feels entitled to be her boyfriend despite the fact that Danny is a lesbian. And to make it even worse the superhero team of New Port, the ex-Dreadnought's old team, is arguing if she even should be a superhero and if the mantle of Dreadnought should go to a transgender woman.
Despite all this struggle in Danny's life, she is determined to help people as Dreadnought and find the cyborg killer of the old Dreadnought, Utopia. Along the way Danny makes friends that might be able to help her with her life.
A transgender supergirl, a cowgirl batman type, and a world thrown into chaos. In this heartfelt, empowering, and unapologetically trans duology you will join Danny in a world were she feels like she is one of the few heroes trying to actually help people from the dangerous world and tech.

DEMO ( . . . ) || ro descriptions ||
You honestly can’t remember how you got here.
You and your three best friends are quickly becoming the most elusive robbers in Detroit, and you’re hardly out of your teens.
And now that the four of you are out of high school, you’ve had all the freedom you could ever dream of!
…That is, until the police get a little too close to your crimes for comfort. So, now all of you have to pack your bags and head off to college to avoid looking suspicious. Burglary would look awful on your record, after all.
Some habits, however, can’t be broken that easily. You still feel drawn to the shiny jewels behind the store windows, or the extremely expensive designer bags. All of them able to disappear with just a swipe of your hand.
If you had a chance to steal everything you’ve ever wanted, would you take it?
Tumblr media
Play as straight, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, monogamous, polyamorous, aromantic, or asexual.
Form a deep(er) platonic or romantic relationship with your three best friends! They’re all gender selectable between male and female, and can have different reactions to your decisions. There are 4 monogamous routes and 2 poly routes so far.
Experience college (for better or for worse) when you’re on the run from the law. Pick your classes and your roommate, and choose well! They’ll be with you for a while.
Rob some banks and choose your role! Do you go on the front lines and get your hands dirty? Or do you stand aside and assist from the back?
Try your hardest not to get caught by police. Or do. No judging here.
This game will be rated 15+ for drug usage (mentioned and implied), under and of age alcohol usage (mentioned and implied), strong language, and optional depictions of violence.

COMBAT EXPERT
J Scarlett is probably one of the most unapproachable people you know. With a permanent scowl on their face and an insult always raring to shoot, there’s no surprise that you are one of their only friends. J may seem insensitive at times, but they simply have a hard time letting their guard down, even around people they like.
Would you break down their walls?
INFILTRATION EXPERT
A Al-Salih can best be described as carefree. Optimistic and caring, they’re always there to back everyone up in tough situations. A is reliable, and will go out of their way to make sure everyone is feeling alright. They know it’s wrong, but they wouldn’t even think twice about sacrifice themself for you.
How far could you take your relationship?
TECH EXPERT
S Klein, despite never leaving their room, is somehow one of the most annoying friends of the bunch. Bastard is their middle name (not really), so they say. Their teasing and flirtatious remarks are seldom genuine, and their flighty and indecisive attitude leads to some regrettable moments. No one really knows who they are.
Could you become the one person they trust?
POLICE FORCE
T Seniloli is a new member of the police department, and their lofty ambitions tend to blind their good judgement. To them, you and your group are their enemies, and they are hellbent on capturing you. They tend to wear their emotions on their sleeve. In fact, their delusions are kind of… funny. Maybe cute.
Are you the reason they lose sight of themselves?

some canon stfuf about the sonder cast bwaa :33 you can have ur own hcs btw id love to see them <3 but!! yeah,, i feel liek infodumping a teensy bit hrgfrhfh mainly cuz im not in an art mood 2day sigh doesnt include everyone bc this is only stuff i can think of off the top of my head atm but :3
lance: canonically bisexual, might be a trans man (havent decided? its honestly up 2 the audience, could go either way), was a huge moviestarplanet player when he was a kid, would probably play dress to impress methinks, for the LONGEST time was convinced something was going on between allura and keith and was insanely jealous and bitter, has the worst gaydar ever TRUST, figured out he was bisexual while playing msp but it only got worse when he met keith and hes really pissed about it
keith: gay as hell but hasnt exactly processed or accepted it (just knows hes scared of women) (for many reasons), transgender (will respond to anything besides feminine pronouns n such), most likely did his own piercings dont ask how or why, allura is the only woman thus far hes comfortable with because she reminds him of a certain someone, allura and him r huge gossips, jack of all trades but really does not know what hes good at like he doesnt know a thing about himself (one time lance challenged him to try out his sniper bc they got into an argument and keith was surprisingly good at it, he was evidently more confused than lance somehow?) (think that one family guy audio where s liek "how r u doing that" "i dunno ;;; O_O"), if you ask him ANYTHING about himself he will most likely just say "yeah i dont rememebr" or "I dont know", often talks very old school and "retro" (in lance's words), surprisingly a decent cook/baker, not as good as hunk of course but can keep up, despite this it was revealed in a conversation with hunk that keith was eating glass among other inedible things while going crazy in the desert (his feral era <3), can diy explosives among other things and no one acknowledges it because it scares them, this boy is very autistic, audhd in fact, im right and you all know it allura: lesbian but doesnt realize it just yet, would probably love the idea of neo/xenopronouns she'd find them whimsical, surprisingly prefers moths over butterflies (mainly after a talk she and keith had one night), huge gossip and loves romance but not in a "i need to date a man" way but "i want to play cupid" (think mabel from gravity falls) (she did have a phase of being boy crazy but that quickly went away when she was brought out of stasis), she loves dressing up but mainly dresses down and more casually because she doesnt go out as much thanks to altea going kaput and all that, she adores gardening and likes to make dyes and such from her flowers, huge diy queen (TRUSTT) she can sew and all that, probably real crafty, keith and allura are close friends and both extremely out of touch with normal human people, she frequently asks him for advice due to their closeness and they just make eachother worse /aff, unironically used wicked in a sentence and was very proud of it (lance almost threw keith out of an airlock for this one), not the best cook but tries her best and is fairly confident with her skills (vicecore if you play alchemy stars) (keith almost banned her from the kitchen) (they agreed on supervised kitchen hours)
pidge: aroace and agender, literally a chronically online cosplayer tech nerd, probably has been cancelled multiple times to the point where matthew had to take every piece of tech they had in the house, has doxxed people before, obsessed with vocaloid and anime, wants to get piercings really bad but their parents wont let them, uses any pronouns and if you ask for their gender they will change their answer everytime or answer with something silly like "the void", their favorite person is Hunk but beyond that prefers robots and tech as their companions, keith is their favorite victim of pranks (save him), the only one who isnt scared of keith even a little bit, evil scientist coded, too smart for their own good, not very socially smart and misses social cues but doesnt really care, very picky about the food they consume, iconic 13-14 year old who is a bit too excited at the prospect of having an excuse to build weapons

I see that Govenor Pritzker still in the running for possible vp picks and
As someone who lives in Illinois, he's a bad pick. I voted for Pritzker myself and think he's a great governor, but the fact that he's a billionaire threw a lot of IL residents off when voting for him.
He's very liberal, which is expected for a generally blue state. But the Republicans are using both immigrants and trans people to jump on. Chicago is a sanctuary city, and we have a lot of migrants, documented and undocumented.
With trans people, under Pritzker changing your gender is officially cheaper and easier than your name. You don't need a doctors note or any proof of transition and the process is less than $20.
And uh... the Pritzker family includes a trans woman, Jennifer Pritzker (J.B.'s cousin). She's used her money to fund trans causes and has been spoken about as "the elites pushing the transgender agenda."
The Pritzkers are Jewish by the way. I couldn't find the original article I was thinking of, but it did use elite.
On a less serious note, it reminded me of all the original election ads back when he was first running. Every time I tried to watch a YouTube video I'd get "Pritzker took the toilets out of his house and dumped them in his yard to avoid taxes"
youtube
And now you can too.
But overall, he's too liberal to run alongside Kamala. He does want to run for president in the future, and I'd likely support him, but Kamala needs a balance and Pritzker isn't it.
Plus we need him here. Four out of ten of our past governors have gone to prison. We're not the luckiest with governors over here.

I'm just very affected by stereotypes around masculine vs feminine fields... I like fitting in, at least superficially, and I want to be liked. Growing up I was never actually told that I couldn't do anything because I was a girl, but I felt it... like, "girls are worse at math" and "girls naturally don't want to go into stem"... So I, as a girl who was good at math, felt an obligation to succeed in STEM, and prove to everyone that a girl could do these things! Even more, I wanted to prove to everyone that a trans man who was socialized as a girl could do STEM, and fight the stereotype that trans men are relegated to the arts and humanities, or only take up artistic careers. I wanted to be different and prove that trans men had the same capabilities as cis men.
But... as I get further and further into my tech career... I feel guilty because in my case... the stereotypes are right. I'm not good at math beyond calculus, and I don't have any motivation to pursue programming projects of my own. I'm not good at physics and while I'm good with computers, I don't go out of my way to get better at it. There are blips of enjoyment here and there and I try my best to cultivate interest, but the truth is that I am deeply unhappy with what I study. What I really want to do is to sit around and read and draw and talk to people. But I'm scared to admit it, because then that means they were right, and I can't do anything useful. In some form it strips away part of what makes me feel masculine and I don't feel comfortable with that.
I think that part of it is a burden on me to separate gender from profession and field, because I definitely do have a lot of hangups around that. I'm majoring in Computer Science because it makes me feel "malebrained" and I don't think that's like, a thought process that any normal person has. (I am not normal). But I think the other part is that it shouldn't be on me to represent an entire population of people. It's a good thing to do, certainly, but trying to be "good transgender rep" in real life shouldn't be any single person's goal.
Why should I be a more virtuous person, put more effort into my day, count my missteps more, for the reason of being a minority population? Why should I push myself to do things I don't enjoy for the purposes of pointing to someone that "HEY! I'm a man too! And I can DO STUFF just like men! Because hey! Men and women can do the SAME THINGS!" Maybe I'm making up a person to get mad at, someone who really believes that "female brains" aren't wired the same as "male brains."* But why can't I just be allowed to exist and make mistakes just like anyone else?
I don't want to have to be a shining pillar of society just to be a human.
*this footnote is here because I am quite sure that these people exist; in fact, I had a rather notorious Computer Science professor, Stuart Reges, for one of my first classes of uni, ever, who wrote an article titled "Why Women Don't Code." It's as bad as you expect, and is my Roman Empire.

Since no one answered my questions about "Dragon Age: The Veilguard", I ended up caving and buying the game, and here are my findings. Plus my Rook, because he is very cute.
Spoiler-free!
THE GOOD
The game is nowhere near as linear as some reviews made it seem! You can still explore large areas, finding secrets and picking up quests, and do said quests in whatever order you choose.
The Codex remains and is great.
The game looks beautiful, even at low resolution. I love the illustrated narrated scenes. The look of the 'hub world' is customizable and cozy too.
If party banter gets interrupted (e.g., by an enemy encounter), the characters will pick it back up later.
You can set an 'appearance' outfit to override the look of whatever armor you actually have installed. No more choosing between appearance and stats. All armors can also be upgraded.
You can pet cats and dogs, and even hug a baby gryphon. I have had Assam for one day and if anything ever happened to him I would kill everyone in Tevinter and then myself.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
There are many difficulty settings, including a "storyteller" mode for players who are more interested in the story aspects that allows you to disable death for your character. No need to stress about boss fights.
THE MAYBE
In general, I love the new combat system. I am not a fan of strategic combat, and this feels much more dynamic and fun. That said, they also made it way too complex. Besides short and long-distance attacks and skills, there are special effects using different key combos, using runes, setting up combo attacks between (otherwise independent) party members, and changing weapon types.
They did not override most decisions from previous games. Everything is simply not mentioned. The only exception is when you ask about the companions from "Inquisition", as it assumes all companions were hired, which wasn't obligatory to do. Also, for some reason, Vivienne is not mentioned at all.
Regarding discourse around the game: People are apparently complaining about the game being 'woke', but honestly the only thing I have noticed is that you can have your character be transgender. And maybe Taash struggling with her mother complaining she isn’t feminine enough (is that woke now?). That's about it. There is no 'woke ideology' in the game. I don't know who is making that up.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
THE BAD
The character creator is bad. You have to choose three different premade faces and morph between them instead of working with each separate feature (which you can only adjust a little). I couldn't recreate my Inquisitor properly because it was impossible to alter the eye shape to what I wanted.
I also couldn't give her the scars and tattoo she had. In fact, the scar and tattoo options aren't the best. Some scars look a bit cartoony. There are no small tattoos.
More bad writing: it makes no sense to sideline the quest to stop Solas and have the two evanuris be the villains instead. I think they are interesting, but this development is not the best.
Bad writing. Not all the time, but enough times to be noticeable. Emmrich talks like a cartoon character in his introductory mission, for example; fortunately, it seems to be toned down later.
Bellara has it the worst of all, though. She is the bubbly, ditsy maniac pixie girl that I am sure is some tech boy's dream. The 'cutesy' way she talks and squeaks honestly makes me uncomfortable. I have been actively avoiding having her in the party.
Choosing a faction doesn't really have that big of an influence on the game. Your faction will grow its influence faster and there will be a few lines acknowledging your history with them, but that seems to be about it. There are no special missions, nor a separate start like in "Origins". It feels a bit like an afterthought.
Despite having dialogue choices with different 'personalities', Rook always agrees with everything. The different lines all end up being the same basic response, just in different words/tones.
You can't talk to companions unless there is an event involving them. It's immersion breaking. Seriously, they couldn't have a couple lines on repeat?

According to Google Trends, the word "empowerment" hit a high in 2004 and 2005, as it became more deeply entrenched everywhere—feminist discourse, consumer marketing, corporate culture. "Empowering" joined "synergy," "scalable," and "drill-down" in boardroom conferences, vision statements, and business plans, and was eventually called "the most condescending transitive verb ever" by Forbes. It's become the name of a range of businesses, a national fitness event, and an almost mind-boggling number of yoga studios. It's become a company-jargon fave at Microsoft, with former and current CEOs Steve Ballmer and Satya Nadella both using it to impressively vague effect in memos and public talks. (At Microsoft's annual Convergence event in 2015, Nadella told attendees, "We are in the empowering business," and added that the tech giant's goal was "empowering you as individuals and organizations across every vertical and every size of business, and any part of the world, to drive your agenda and do the things you want to do for your business.")
Elsewhere in discourses and debates around sex as both an activity and a commodity, "empowerment" has become a sort of shorthand that might mean "I'm proud of doing this thing," but also might mean "This thing is not the ideal thing, but it's a lot better than some of the alternatives." Feeling empowered by stripping, for instance, was a big theme among moonlighting academics or otherwise privileged young women in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and you can find countless memoirs about what they discovered about themselves in the world of the sexual marketplace; the same is true of prostitution, with blogs like Belle de Jour, College Call Girl, and books like Tracy Quan's Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl. There was a point in the mid-to-late 2000s when you couldn't swing a cat through Barnes & Noble without knocking a slew of sex-work memoirs off the shelves: Lily Burana’s Strip City, Diablo Cody's Candy Girl, Jillian Lauren's Some Girl, Michelle Tea's Rent Girl, Shawna Kenny's I Was a Teenage Dominatrix, Melissa Febos's Whip Smart, and Sarah Katherine Lewis's Indecent among them. The crucial thing these often incredibly absorbing and well-written books had in common? All were written by young, white, and no-longer-hustling sex workers.
I want to be clear that standing with sex workers on the principle that sex work is work is an issue whose importance cannot be overstated, and also clear that my complete lack of expertise on the subject makes it well beyond the scope of this book. But I am interested in the idea that "empowerment" is so often used as a reflexive defense mechanism in discussions of this kind of sex-work experience, but less so in describing the less written-about experiences of people whose time in the industry is less finite and less bookworthy—transgender women, exploited teenagers and trafficked foreigners, men and women forced into sex work by poverty, abuse, or addiction. And I'm fascinated by the fact that we see thousands of pop culture products in which women are empowered by a sex industry that does not have their empowerment in mind, but far fewer in which they are empowered to make sexual choices on their own terms, outside of a status quo in which women's bodies are commodities to be bought and sold. Indecent author Sarah Katherine Lewis has written that, during her time as a stripper, "I felt empowered—as a woman, as a feminist, as a human being by the money I made, not by the work I did"; but hers is just one story. Belle de Jour and other sex workers have written about truly enjoying their work. If the market were just as welcoming of narratives in which young women were empowered by their careers as, say, electricians—if personal memoirs about a youthful, self-determining layover in the electrical trades were a thing publishers clamored for—then a handful of empowered sex workers would be no big thing. Until that's the case, it's worth questioning why the word is so often the first line of defense.

📓📓📓
damn THREE books...
1 tattoo artist/reference desk librarian
what if a tattoo artist and a reference desk librarian fell in love...
reggie: a tattoo artist with a passion for reading dense academic textbooks and their bibliographies and a crush on the reference desk librarian who always seems to be on shift when he goes in
alex: a reference desk librarian with a hobby for gossipping about frequent patrons and a massive crush on his favorite grad student - though for what field he's not yet certain
the plot: reggie is a frequent visitor of alex's library in search of literally just random shit he's interested in learning about. alex is utterly convinced he's a student at the university (don't worry about what the relationship is between the library, the university, and the public) and is determined to figure out what his field of study is without asking, through the power of gossipping about it with his friends
reggie and willie have a tattoo shop together. the tattoo shop is called Sparkwheel's Tattoos and Piercings. it is named after ur nicknames for reggie and willie for each other being sparky and wheels <3 it's also named after the fact that in this fic their last names are both sparkwheel. also they have matching sparkwheels tattooed on their heels <33
"Oh, we're not married," Reggie said. "We just have the same last name for way weirder reasons."
2 the soulmate goose of enforcement
my discord avatar is dex from check please. read this
the world: what if instead of any one soulmate au, it was all of them? luke lives in a world where your 16th birthday coincides with the reveal of how, exactly, you're going to find your soulmate, as anticlimactic or exciting as it may turn out to be. he was like 100% certain he was gonna get something music-related. instead he got a goose.
luckily, he meets his soulmate pretty soon after that! unluckily, the goose does not go away as planned. weird.
and thus begins the ever-expanding quasi-platonic polycule of luke's soulmates, their soulmates, their friends, and etcetera. he does eventually find a romantic soulmate too. unfortunately by that point he's too used to everyone ending up being platonic soulmates to realize
oh yeah also it's a royalty au bc it was inspired by a round of troped. remember troped? man.
3 the pirate willexie one where i steal a country name from fete for a king even though i'm only on chapter 6
reggie, fleeing a shitty homelife and following in the footsteps of his best friend, fakes his death for the life insurance payout and becomes a thief. an indeterminate amount of time later, he finally returns to his hometown to retrieve what was left to him in the finally-unsealed will of his missing-presumed-dead best friend. unfortunately, he's super recognizable to like, everyone in the house at the time. and robbing it. time to flee! oh no he's been cornered at the docks! time to jump on a boat as it leaves!
willie is the captain of a transgender pirate ship weilding a leverage-ass understanding of what an EMP cannon is or how it functions. his crew includes: - julie, the first mate/medic/musician -flynn, the tech guy/navigator -luke, the munitions guy/musician -bobby, the head cook -nick, who's just kind of there it's a very exciting time when reggie jumps aboard fleeing the cops. willie loves fleeing the cops and he loves cute boys and he loves having an extra hand on the boat so this whole situation is a win-win-win
alex ran away to sea, is now missing presumed dead. sad!
this fic features: transgenderism! flynn and luke being aro besties! my anger at the concept of a child star! small european countries! a lot of research into what the letters before boat names mean!

Doc helped him come to terms with being trans and helped him transition. Loves his mama even if he never met her personally, keeps her spirit alive in his own, celebrates Dia De Los Muertos and makes a nice little alter for her. Left and joined the agency shortly before Phobos' death. He took a lover, Esmeralda Romero, in secret which resulted in Deimos being born. Only two people know of this fact, and one of them is dead. He doesn't have any plans to tell anyone else. Inspired to fight back against dictators, he's of the mindset that everyone is out to use you for some purpose, and you have to look out for yourself, and what few people you can trust. Ultimately he wants to protect Nevada and eventually restore it to some sense or normalcy, as impossible as a task as that seems. He raised Deimos from birth, teaching him how to take care of himself, knowing that he's a marked man, and many want him dead. He loves Deimos as his son, respects Sanford for his hard and loyal work, and trusts Hank will do as commanded.
His list of trusted people is small, and his list of friends is even smaller.

The dream is that at some point I manage to get myself together enough (which being medicated would help a lot for, but the UK does not take mental health stuff seriously) to start properly writing stuff, and eventually I get published and a decent following and a fantasy series I’m known for, and then I start a second series which is a sci-fi thing but with significant magical elements but with that worked in with the technology, and it has a focus on characters from massively different species living together and their varying needs and stuff, with an element of that being the translator tech they use and how that has to account for the fact that the very nature of what communication is can vary massively between species, and one of the people on the ship is from a species of fluffy rat-like things which has sexually dimorphic fur colour and historically trans members of the species would use the ash of a particular type of plant to change their fur colour (different bits of the plant leave ash of different colours), and so the words for “transgender” and “covered in ash” are the same for them. And one time a character from a different species sees him for the first time just after getting out the Space-Shower but before reapplying the ash (it’s pretty easy to actually change their fur colour in the space future of the books, but many individuals still choose to use the more traditional techniques to honour the past a bit. It’s an ash that hangs about, so it’ll be fine during a light wash but this was a really heavy one. Maybe they even specifically washed it out so they could reapply fresh. I dunno. With the best will in the world I’m a decade out from actually writing this, so I don’t need to know yet.), and they’re like “You’re a different colour?” and the crewmate explains all this, but the first time he say “trans” the translator gives the beep says “Trans or Covered in Ash” and gives the beep that means it’s one of those two, and he gets the notification that that’s what the translator’s done and at first he just clarifies but then after the second time it happens he presses a button and tell the translator to always translate that word as “transgender” going forwards. And then two books later there’s a bit where there’s been an explosion or something, and everyone’s looking for someone, and this crewmate is the one to find them, and they’re all buried in ash after the explosion (or maybe a volcanic eruption? Yeah, that might work better), and he calls to everyone else like “They’re over here! They’re transgender!”. So, yeah, that’s the incredibly long explanation needed for a silly joke in a thing that I might one day write.

I'd like to thank last night's subconscious for giving me "Transgender cricket noir detective, yes cricket, he's from a civilization of insect people and in a polycule with a nonbinary praying mantis who people are generally a bit afraid of but they're actually a vegetarian, and a transfemme bee (her AGAB was "worker bee" but she decided she's a woman), also they live alongside a civilization of humans and frequently have to use shapeshifting tech? magic? to turn human to more effectively communicate with humans but it is suuuch a sensory nightmare having your skeleton on the inside, also, yes, I said this guy was part of a polycule but he still manages to be an incredibly pathetic noir detective who is, in fact, trying to solve a murder,"
