I got home from a long shift. The ungodly amount of caffeine I consumed as officially worn down, to make matters worse I couldn't be any more worn down mentally. I also think I still got blood in my hair. That blood isn't mine. Just another amazing day at R.A.V.E.N, just another mentally and physically exhausting day. In summary there was an accident at the lab today that involved someone's guts exploding. I sanitized myself but there's still stains on me. Christ, I have no idea how my sanity is still intact. Some people can only witness so much before turning against the organization.

As I open my door I'm greeted by a person sitting on my couch. I live alone so I flinch at the sight but quickly relax as I'm reminded it's just the kid Jason randomly brought home one day. That man just went insane one day and told us about this kid he took in, and today he's my responsibility-ish. I have no idea where Jason found the idea that any of us have time to be parents considering of how much of workaholics all three of us are. Rev can't even take this kid home because of his parental situation. So that leaves the two of us, today the kid is with me because Jason has family stuff.

The kid is half asleep but lights up when he sees me. Please don't look at me like that, I just saw a man die today.

"Where's Rosa?" I ask. My girlfriend made a surprise visit one time and got to meet him. I guess they got along well and Rosa insisted on bonding with the kid today.

"She left" he said. He yawns and squeaks a small enthusiastic "Hi Charlotte." Those words churn my guts, please stop looking at me like that. I should've just told Jason to leave this kid alone. But I push down these thoughts and sit on the couch with him.

"Shouldn't you be in bed?" I question.

"I was waiting for you." He responds. No, I didn't just hear that. No one is insane enough to wait for me of all people. Look at me, I saw a man die and I didn't even flinch, I'm a horrible person!

I stare at the kid in awe and he merely stares back "Alright, I'm going to bed now." I expected him to get up to the guest room but no. Instead he lays down with his head brushing against my lap, this made me flinch. I was going to object but he already has his eyes closed.

I don't know why but I started to hic. C’mon please don't do this to me. I don't deserve this. Why would you trust me like this? I'm not your mom. Then the tears started to flow out. There's literal blood on me yet you're still not disturbed. You don't deserve this, you don't deserve someone that works such long and dangerous hours as I do. You deserve better. God I'm so fucking sorry you got stuck with me.

"Goodnight."

I pause.

"Goodnight kid." This kid trusts me...

I suppose at the very least I could play along and give him the illusion of someone loving. Tomorrow could very easily be my last, but might as well enjoy this moment while it lasts. I find the nearest blanket in arms reach and drape it over him. Goodnight.
