i do! actually, i’m working on a fic right now where i explore more tgirl hiccup and how that changes her sense of self and relationship to others. though, it’s a bit more exploratory and not as chronological as my other httyd wip, which is a canon-divergence exploring a “what-if” where hiccup doesn’t grow up on berk and is trying to find his mom, but somehow ends up in berk anyway to end the war… but i digress!!!

So here are some assorted thoughts for you :D

i do think tgirl hiccup still has stubble (she doesn’t shave every day, though it does depend on whether she can handle the sensory experience that day). In part it’s because there’s less stigma about it; i dont think berkian society cares much about girls having facial hair so long as whatever hair does exist is well-kept, and whoever that hair belongs to is alive. And if anyone says otherwise, then snotlout and the twins are there to kick their teeth in. And also because facial hair and body hair in general are just parts of our bodies and i like being able to include that…! she also has arm hair, at least the bits that survive the forge.

Initially hiccup grows her hair out, enough to put it in a ponytail, but at least by the time httyd2 rolls around it’s back to being shoulder length/short again. Long hair does not make for fun flights, as it turns out, because her hair gets REALLY tangled. Even though Astrid is very handy with a comb. And her fingers.

gothi gets this girl on estrogen. with the help of strategically placed padding/armor and the lean muscle she’s built up flying toothless, hiccup slowly begins to fill out, though she’s still scrawny and gangly and a toothpick

I think by virtue of living with a single dad (and a gobber)(lord. stoick and gobber’s bromantic/homoerotic relationship is a post for another day), Hiccup already knows how to do what are considered “womanly” chores. That being said, she isn’t particularly extraordinary at any of them — she doesn’t have Snotlout’s proficiency with needlework nor Tuffnut’s cooking skills, lacks Astrid’s finesse with laundry and Ruffnut’s clever compositions with kennings, and certainly can’t match up to the way Fishlegs manages little ones. Which is fine — her skills lie elsewhere, in the forge and with dragons. At least she can cook a decent enough meal for her and her father and Gobber, and that’s enough for their little family.

Toothless was told first and he also knew first. They’re two halves of a whole, not-so-much a girl and a dragon as they are a single entity, a We, and i think toothless would also trans his gender in solidarity/kinship but hiccup shakes her finger and is like You and I both know damn well you feel like a boy. and he’s like (chuffs)(human gender is stupid… how limiting !). One day he will be able to communicate the nuances of dragon gender to his stupid human. But for now, Hiccup will call Toothless a “boy,” and that is the limits of human language.

What are your Nexus headcanons?

• He still has the Twilight Sparkle sticker. But instead of it being on his inner-arm, it's inside their casing, on his endoskeleton. Right on their heart.

• Unironically listens to nightcore/sped up/hyperpop shit because it's all so fast and loud it distracts him from physical pain.

• Also they're a religious fan of Epic the Musical. loser (/vaff) kins Odysseus KSJDFHDS Solar was his Polities.

• I like to think Dark Sun also has cats. Nexus let's them sit on his lap whenever he's sitting down to Evilly Scheme and the cats Love it there, much to Dark Sun's chagrin.

• He refuses to look into any mirrors/reflective surfaces. There's no glass in his part of the lab, and anything else that could be reflective is dirty enough that it can't. Nexus hates looking at his own face, because he doesn't recognize himself anymore.

• Is literally addicted to NSP. It's their solution to everything. It's also why they're as insane as they are now- the NSP is eating away at them slowly. Deep down they do still care and they want to stop, but Ruin can't do anything to help them, and Dark Sun enables them.

• Because of how much he smells like NSP the dragon likes him. Like the dragon will look at him like Toothless looks at Hiccup. And Nexus doesn't know how to reciprocate so he just pats them on the nose before continuing on with their day.

• Obviously I draw Nexus as a woman/transfem but really, they go by any pronouns. They just don't care. They just like presenting feminine because it's fun. She sometimes says she just goes by "he/him" simply to fuck with people though.

• This bitch STILL HALLUCINATES!!! It's not uncommon at all to walk into their room and see them talking to no one. If you'd stay and listen, you'd realize he thinks he's either talking to Sun or Solar. Maybe once in a blue moon, even Eclipse.

• After they got shot and had the bullets removed, they still ached like a mofo for days after. Ruin had to help get them to a charging port for the first few days. Nexus was nicer to Ruin for a bit after that. Until they took their next shot of NSP, of course.

I tried to put some of my thoughts regarding Barok and Lady B into words:

As I said in my previous ask answer, I think Barok being transfem could make her relationship to Lady Baskerville really interesting even though Barok realizes her trans gender after Lady B has long since left her life.

I don't think Barok has much contact with women in her childhood aside from her mother and female servants because after all, she was raised to be a man and probably attended boys' school and as far as we can tell from canon, was more focused on Klint and her father than any female family member, in fact, the only female member of her family Barok brings up in canon is Lady B.

In my world, Lady Baskerville came into the Van Zieks siblings' life when Barok was not even a teenager, maybe around 10 or 11 years old. Because their parents, in my world, had died only a few years prior, Klint was raising Barok (and frankly had been doing so even when their parents were alive), so Barok is very attached to him. But suddenly, Barok is not the sole receipient of Klint's attention and affection like he is used to being because he is now courting someone???? Unbelievable. Unforgivable even!

So in the beginning, there is a lot of tension between Lady B and Barok, she is keeping Klint from him after all which makes her the most horrible person on Earth actually. ...But then again, she is nice to Barok even though he is so bitter towards her in turn and even though their interactions are usually a little awkward, and then again, even though Barok doesn't want to like her, there is something alluring about her. Something mixing into the jealousy that is causing Barok to act like this, something that feels familiar but is not about Klint. I think Lady B is, like Klint, a bit of a rebellious spirit in terms of social norms and expectations, so is it perhaps that which draws Barok towards her, is that the something he is trying to reach but can't attain?

I have this idea in my head for a fic that I still need to work out in more detail but still wrote something to because I love egg Barok where Barok, while trying to "get revenge" on Lady B by doing something to her possessions, has a sort of "Oh." moment that confuses and hopelessly overwhelms him. And when Lady B finds out about it and approaches him afterwards to ask why he did what he did, this happens:

He drew in a sharp breath and wiped his eyes. “Be-Because… Uhm…” He did not know why. He had no idea why it was not allowed, if it even was. No one had ever forbidden it to him because no one around him had ever had the idea. And so, he concluded, it must be forbidden, it must be hushed up in locked rooms, washed off and drained from one’s memory. “Because…” But Barok was inexplicably incapable of letting go of that experience. He hiccuped, tried to speak once more, “I…” but dissolved into merciless sobbing. At that point, Beryl had been a figure in his life for about a year. Although they began on a rather awkward basis – Barok rarely felt jealousy as there was rarely something he desired but could not attain, but even in his youth, grief was not an unknown feeling; and he had grieved silently yet strongly for the loss of Klint who now had to redistribute his resources to be a brother as well as a husband – Klint had acted as the very stubborn glue between them, and little by little, he had begrudgingly allowed the invader into his home. Still, Barok had next to never cried in her presence save for the times he could not flee from it and Klint, familiar with it, had taken care of him as he had always done before. Beryl gingerly laid her hands on his shoulders, let them settle there for a moment before gently asking, “If I– …Barok, may I?” She had learned from Klint, was copying his patient pace to the point of hesitation, and Barok threw himself into her arms. After his mother’s death, there had been no woman left whom he permitted to hold him. This felt like the embrace of a sister who not only comforted but understood. Beryl held him tight as he cried into her shoulder, his body shaken by a sheer unending stream of relentless sobs, unable to find hold and regain control. What was it that he wanted? What was it that he wanted from her? What was it about him that, despite all the bitterness he had harbored against her, still made her feel pity for him?

I think Lady B told Klint anyway, not with malicious intent, on the contrary, I think she just genuinely doesn't know what to do after this interaction. But because Barok asks her to keep it a secret in the fic before the bit I showed here, Klint also can't asked Barok about it. So this becomes the first time Barok (believes that he) is keeping a secret from Klint that only his current least favorite person on earth knows about and understands in some way at least. And when Barok ultimately gets over himself and becomes closer with Lady B, he both feels connected to her in their secret mutual understanding yet also feels anxiety and shame that she saw him so confused and vulnerable. And even though they are close now, there is still some undefinable yearning in Barok that he feels around her.

Just because of the time period, I don't think neither Barok nor Lady B understand that interaction as "Oh, I am trans"/"Oh, Barok is trans" but, taking my headcanons into account, Lady B - queer in her bi4bi open marriage with Klint and polycule with Genshin - did understand it as something queer. But since Barok is unaware of the nature of her relationship to Klint and Genshin because how were they supposed to tell him about it in the 19th century, Barok grows up ignorant in the very queer Van Zieks household, believing he'd have to suppress all his thoughts. Another tragedy in the Van Zieks family...

you are absolutely correct and I’ve been turning over specifically astrid’s coming of age arc in my head for this reason!!!

Something interesting to me is how Astrid lacks the goofy naming tradition of Berk. To me, in part that’s because when she came out as a girl she really wanted to leave her old identity behind including the silly nature of her name… but ‘Astrid’? Now that’s a name worth fearing, that’s a name that sounds powerful, and for people to respect her and her being-a-girl, she needs to have a name worth respecting. she needs to be The Perfect Girl, the perfect warrior, so she trains day and night to become the best shieldmaiden because that’s what her community needs. They need someone who can fight and kill dragons and protect their home

and then all of that gets upended

And now she’s left with… Astrid the girl who is the best shieldmaiden of her age. but what use is that strength now that there’s peace? how does she come to terms with this new identity? With this name and this image that she picked out for herself that no longer needs to exist the way it once needed to?

Something I’m particularly interested in is exploring Astrid’s trans feminine identity in the largely violent, strength-dominant culture that does not need to exist as it once did. this is why astrid cooking in gotnf and episodes like flight of passage are so interesting to me… we get to see astrid express interest in new ideas and struggle with peacetime, but despite that, she’s clearly someone who loves deeply. Astrid loves Berk, she is willing to kill and die for it — now she has to learn to live for it

Crazy how I posted about my transfem skeleton named Matilda but not about my uncle passing away

He was a great guy tbh. I didn’t spend much time with him or knew him too well but he was always nice and from what I’ve heard he did a lot of good for my family

When my mom sent me a text saying that he had passed away after too weeks of suffering I was shocked. I didn’t start crying or disassociating or anything like that, I just felt hollow. I also felt guilty for not having a stronger reaction to the news. It was hard for me to care about the rest of the lesson (I was in school at the time) and when it was over I just packed my stuff and went out of the classroom with my friend. Like always. I thought it would be easy for me to just act like nothing has happened because I didn’t feel like ibis death really impacted me that much. But I was wrong. I couldn’t talk and I began to feel nauseous. My friend noticed and asked what’s wrong, I told her that my uncle died and she said that she was sorry. She didn’t say anything else on our way to the lockers but it was fine, I knew she cared even if she didn’t have the words for it at the moment. I was walking a bit too fast and at multiple times unintentionally run ahead of her. When we said goodbye and I went out of the school it hit me. I cried all the way to home, like actually cried. With hiccups and loud sobs and everything. This is unusual for me since normally I try to suppress it. I did even realize that I didn’t have my headphones on or that it was raining and I didn’t have my hood on until I got home. I distracted myself with an hour of TikTok time and a shower. I tried not to think about it but it was hard. I’m still scared shitless of death and being forgotten and ceasing to exist, and having someone relatively close to me die triggered those fears in me. I didn’t tell my foster family and I don’t think I will any time soon. I don’t feel like I deserve to grieve my uncle, I barely knew him and honestly now, just the next day, I don’t feel that bad about his death. I mean it still sucks that such a great man died but the feelings I had when I just got the news are faded and don’t come up unless I think about them on purpose.

It’s difficult for me to comprehend that he’s dead.

a lot of replies on this so maybe youve gotten this kind of response already,

for me hcing a person struggling with masculinity as trans masc isnt an aspirational thing, I guess maybe it’s less that i 'headcanon' a character as trans, but rather i think their narratives reflect some of my trans masc experience back to me. I don’t feel represented by a confident male character generally - especially before I started T - so to see a pathetic man character who struggles to attain signals of approved masculinity without their *gender* being questioned… It allows me to relate more deeply. My anxiety about being misgendered because of my inability to match with ideal maleness is completely sidestepped. Like, i think i would be viscerally uncomfortable watching an afab character go through those struggles, but if the character is *cis* it brings the emotional level down to a point where I can handle the emotional stakes, reach catharsis. Bc these stories also often end in the man either attaining the symbol he needs to feel comfortable, or with the peace of mind that there’ss no need to live up to the standard after all. In movies at least, in tv i think it’s rare for this to get resolved.

I do see the transfeminine angle as well!I just can't endorse it wholeheartedly when these characters are so frequently rewarded with approved masculinity. I think tv characters of long running shows with this archetype are more apt as transfem headcanons? Characters in a limbo of never attaining masculinity, but being forced to orbit it for years at a time. The audience uninterested with what a life would look like for him outside of this constantly unsatisfied cycle. I would agree more with a transfem george costanza than i do with a trans fem hiccup.

In summary i see a guy struggling to live up to the standards required for society to call him a man and i say “same”

one fandom thing that makes my eyes roll out of my skull is when people apply same-gender trans headcanons to characters where it does not make thematic sense one bit even a little
