Day 12: Karma
Rated Teen, Leshwi/transfem!Kaladin, post-RoW. Kaladin’s egg breaks. This’ll be part 1 of 3, part 2 will be coming up on the 18th!
“Kill me,” Leshwi said to the Rhythm of Hope, as Kaladin’s speartip hovered just below her chin.
“No,” he smiled.
They had taken time away from their new responsibilities to spar. This time, he had come to her at the Listener enclave. Their duel had taken them deep into a chasm of the Shattered Plains, chasing each other around impossible turns. It had been exhilarating.
She hadn't known she could still feel alive until she'd fought him. And now she didn’t know if she would get another life after this one. It made her feel frail, vulnerable–mortal.
And yet in moments like this, especially with Kaladin, Leshwi's memories of the endless cycles of war and imprisonment on Braize seemed distant. She felt like the whole world was new, and that she hadn’t just been reborn, she’d been renewed. She felt totally free.
One of the things she chose to do with that freedom was spar with Kaladin. For so long, no one had come close to her level of skill, and in this life she had actually learned from Kaladin. Like today, he had used some kind of grappling move on her, flipping her through the air until she’d landed flat on her back, and he’d straddled her waist, his weight pressing her into the stone. Though he sat heavy on top of her, she didn’t feel the sting of defeat, just the thrill of the contest. They made an incredible match.
“Kill me,” she insisted, riding the Rhythm of Confidence. “Give me a reason to find a body you would like more.”
He blinked in confusion, and his grip on the spear tightened. “What do you mean?” he asked.
“A woman’s body, so I can entice you. Normally I am not picky about the body I receive, but…my passion has changed.” So, so much had changed.
“I…That would be too great a risk, Leshwi. Odium would torture you.”
“I would find a way to escape Braize. I would find my way back to you,” she said, forcing Confidence.
Slowly, his whole body relaxed, and he dismissed his spear. He looked down, then rested his hands on her broad, flat chest, splaying out his fingers across her carapace. “Leshwi, it’s an honour that you would do that for me, but it wouldn’t be necessary. You…you’re…ah…I’m enticed anyway.” He stared at his hands for a moment, then glanced at her. “Sorry,” he said quickly, and scrambled off her. He looked away awkwardly, then turned back to offer his hand to help her stand.
Leshwi attuned Reconciliation and kept holding his hand, even after she’d stood. This was something new and delicate, too. She felt so free much of the time, sometimes she forgot how stuck she really was. “Perhaps I’ve spoken to Confidence when I should have spoken to Consideration. But I am femalen, Kaladin, in a malen’s body. I wish to respect you and your human culture, and so I should approach you in a femalen body.”
“That doesn’t matter to me. You’re femalen no matter what body you’re in,” he said to Confidence. Slowly, his brow furrowed in an expression Leshwi couldn’t name, and he looked away, taking a deep breath. He seemed pained, perhaps.
She hummed to Reconciliation, then bared her teeth in the human version of the rhythm. “Thank you, Kaladin. In that case, I wish to court you.”
He looked up at her with wide eyes, and he stammered, his face changing colour.
Leshwi thought perhaps she’d made another error. “Oh, yes, men are the ones who usually request to court. I hope I have not dishonoured you?” she said. I will be making much use of Reconciliation today, she thought.
“I…thank you Leshwi, but…I need some time to think,” he said, and turned to fly back to the enclave.
She followed, humming Resignation. She had made too grand a gesture, close to swearing an oath she probably couldn’t keep, and then she had pained him in some way. But, keeping in mind he hadn’t said no yet, she forced herself to attune Resolve instead.
He remained silent and distant, even until he left to return to Urithiru. She hummed Resolve as she watched him leave through the Oathgate, determined to wait until he approached her again.

I don't think I'll ever take for granted my ability to cry. To have the catharsis of letting my emotions out instead of feeling them be trapped inside like before. To really feel, not just have a hollow replica of emotion

Day 16: Hourglass
Rated Teen, Kaladin/Leshwi, Rhythm of War Part 2 of 4 (Find part 1 on tumblr or ao3)
Kaladin stared at himself in the mirror. Himself? Herself? Either way, he needed a full-length mirror to do this, and the only one he knew about was Adolin’s. Unfortunately, that meant Adolin was examining him critically from over his shoulder. Kaladin was wearing a Thaylen-style skirt and blouse, his (her?) safehand gloved, hair pulled back in his usual utilitarian tail. He looked like an hourglass, and he didn’t like it.
“I look terrible,” she said to the mirror, unable to keep a bitter cynicism out of her voice. She liked the glove, but the rest didn’t look right. He’d thought looking more feminine would make him feel better, but it just felt wrong in a way she hadn’t been expecting.
Adolin tapped his chin in thought. “I know you wanted to try something that was more familiar to you, but just because your mother wears it doesn’t mean it’s what you need. Who else do you admire?”
Kaladin immediately thought of Leshwi. It was her fault he…she…was in this mess. Why not borrow from her? He…she…smiled, taking a moment to picture the femalen he wished to court. Leshwi was beautiful. Alluring, even. Maybe the reason this outfit felt so wrong was that it seemed to exaggerate Kaladin’s proportions in a way that didn’t feel true to her.
“Leshwi has wide shoulders and narrow hips like me,” Kaladin said, “and yet her clothing is still so graceful. What about something like that?”
Adolin raised an eyebrow. “You want to dress like the Fused?”
“Not necessarily, but…” Kaladin waved his hands around fruitlessly, unable to find the words. “Leshwi looks like herself. She likes her body, she respects it, and that comes across in the way she dresses and carries herself. I want to be like that, too. I don’t want to hide my body.” Looking in the mirror, she held out the sides of the long skirt, exaggerating the shape. “This feels like hiding.”
She didn’t feel like she understood herself, let alone getting a point across, but Adolin’s reflection was nodding anyway. “Something graceful. Something true to your proportions. Okay…Yeah, I can work with that. I know a woman…” He wandered off, still muttering to himself.
Kaladin removed the offending clothing down to her underwear, and she looked at her body in the mirror. Her breasts had only grown slightly, and her genitals had only shrunk a little. She’d asked Syl why her body hadn’t changed much, if her identity was female, and Syl hadn’t known the answer. But looking at herself in the mirror, she realized. Just like Leshwi, she was perfect just the way she was. A warmth filled her, realizing she was already home. Without Leshwi, she didn’t think she would have known it was possible.
Adolin returned with what looked like an entire family’s laundry in his arms. “I happen to have a shiqua, so I thought that might be a good place to start. It's all one long piece of fabric, so we can even cut it up if you want. Do you remember when we were in Celebrant? The spren there would mix and match styles from everywhere. It’s giving me some ideas. I bet we can do something just perfect for you, Kaladin.”
In return, she smiled, feeling almost like she was floating. In retrospect, asking Adolin for help had been a great idea. “Okay, let’s try it,” she nodded. “And I’ve decided something else–I’d like you to call me Kaladi.”
“Pronounced like Kalami!”
“Yeah.”
“I would’ve thought you’d choose a completely new name,” Adolin said thoughtfully, “but I really like it. Okay, Kaladi, let’s get you graceful. Just don’t steal Shallan from me after, okay?” he winked.
Kaladi grinned. “Don’t worry, Adolin, I’ve got my eyes on someone else.”

What Your Preferred Femslash Cosmere Ships Say About You
Happy Femslash February! I've done these "what your preferred ships" say lists before, if you'd like to check out the old ones: [Kaladin ships, Navani ships, Jasnah ships; also Moash ships by @cosmereplay]
But for now, let's judge you (yes, you!) based on your favorite femslash ships.
Vin x Shallan You are bold, inventive, daring. You don't play by the rules--not of canon, not of time, not of space. You don't let anything stop you, and you are all the happier for it. Good for you, tbh!
Navani x Ialai You may have complained in the tags that I left this ship out of my previous Navani ships post and you know what, you were right. Let these two old ladies fuck!
Marasi x Moonlight You may write fanfic where Marasi joins the Ghostbloods after all, or maybe you have Moonlight leave them to be with Marasi. Either way, you saw the sparks between them and you're running with it.
Ranette x Jaxy It's not like you can let the only (?) canon lesbian ship not get love! Not when it's gun lesbians!
Sarene x Eshen You look at an early, barely-any-women work of Sanderson and you think, "You know what would fix this? Gay sex."
Shallan x Veil It's about the longing. It's about the inability to physically exist in the same space together. It's about the self-acceptance.
Cord x Rysn You've either read Dawnshard or you've seen literally any art of these two.
Raboniel x Navani You don't need your femslash ships to be "sweet" or "loving" or "healthy." You see some twisted devotion and erotic violence and say "Sign me the HELL up."
Transfem Kaladin x Leshwi You have a brilliant and beautiful mind.
Yumi x Shallan I don't know that the shippers for this exist...but now that I've said it, you're thinking about it, right? They're gonna sit on a bench and talk about the beautiful women they see. They're gonna talk art. They're gonna be bi4bi. You see it now. You're welcome.

So I've had some Thoughts lately as I've been rereading Oathbringer about a post I saw at some point just after finishing reading the Stormlight Archive for the first time and starting to get into the fandom. The basic premise of the post was that both Elhokar and Jasnah would have both led better lives if they were trans and effectively switched roles.
I disagree with that in regards to Jasnah. Her problems are mostly from the strict gender roles put on her by Alethi culture and vorinism, not from just being a woman. Also, as an elsecaller her oaths are supposed to revolve around meeting her potential and becoming better, and she's shown to be at at least the fourth ideal in RoW. If she were trans I'd expect that to have come up at some point. Maybe I'm missing something because I'm transfem not transmasc but I don't see that for Jasnah.
Elhokar on the other hand, I get the argument. There's not a lot of textual evidence, but more than for Jasnah. Like Jasnah, the strict gender roles of their culture seems to cause Elhokar distress, but he's way worse at making his own place despite them than Jasnah is. Elhokar was made king after his father's death due to being the only male heir, but as is shown throughout the series he's not good at being a king. Like at all. Jasnah does a much better job ruling Alethkar and that's during the apocalypse! Anyway, being a bad king doesn't mean he's trans, but it does help illustrate that the place he's put in life doesn't fit him.
The strongest evidence for Elhokar being trans is that he's attracted the attention of cryptics and if he wasn't killed he would have become a lightweaver. Lightweavers tend to be people who have deeply hidden truths about themselves that they refuse to admit even to themselves (assuming Shallan isn't a complete outlier). As someone who is trans, it's pretty easy to imagine that being a powerful truth someone would be reluctant to admit to.
Additionally, in Oathbringer when the team is infiltrating Kohlinar, Shallan suggests disguising Elhokar as a woman. Kaladin and Shallan both expect him to resist that idea, but he goes along with it eagerly and never seems uncomfortable with the experience or role while wearing that disguise. It seems like a similar thing to a lot of trans women dressing up as women for Halloween before realizing who they are/coming out because it gives them plausible deniability. I know I for one would have been delighted to have the opportunity to have an illusion that changes both my appearance and voice to be more feminine (I'm slowly working on that without the illusion, but anyways).
The last thing that's less directly evidence of being trans, but still contributes to the argument imo is that Elhokar seems to be kinda depressed most of the time. It'd be pretty easy to read the cut saddle strap situation in TWoK as a potential suicide attempt that could be explained away as trying to find assassins. In WoR after Dalinar sets off into the shattered plains Elhokar immediately starts drinking and goes to Kaladin to talk about how bad he is a being a king. On the night of the assassination attempt he's extremely drunk and moping in his rooms. In early Oathbringer he tries to abdicate the throne to Dalinar and constantly talks about how he always fails and makes a mess of things.
Anyway that's about it for my random thoughts and rambles about this that have been rattling around in my head for a while. I doubt this'll really persuade anyone, but I just wanted to put my thoughts out there
