My Own Private Idaho - Scott/Mike, Scott/Carmela - Pride Month Prompt 3 : Bisexual

Cw for the f slur Prompt : Write either an M/M, F/F, F/M, or Other (to include nonbinary folks since yes, bisexuality often does include them) fic (can be fluff, hurt/comfort, whatever you see fit) in which either one or both of the characters in that pairing are bisexual OR a gen fic in which a bi character (can be a canon or headcanoned character) is coming out to/being comforted by/otherwise talking about sexuality with their friend(s) Headcanons : Bisexual!Scott, FTM!Mike, Autistic!Mike

Scott reckoned sex with Mike wasn't all that bad. A few drinks, twenty bucks, trying to scare off the cops- Whatever excuse he found always wound up with him inches deep into the other man, and a small part of him knew he didn't completely hate it.

Excuse or not, he'd always justify it to himself. Mike wasn't always a man. He had all the downstairs equipment that your average woman on the street did. But that never sat right in his head as a justification for why him sleeping with Michael didn't make him a faggot because, well, he didn't see Michael as a woman. He never did. He could never see Michael as anything less than a man because he wasn't anything less than a man. That was hard to deal with.

It was a slippery slope, too, admitting to himself that his feelings for Michael were beyond the line of platonic. If he admitted that he liked Michael in that way, then he'd have to admit that he didn't hate all the dates he went on with male clients over the years. He'd have to admit to himself that, no matter what change he made in his career path and personal life, that core part of him would always stray from his parents ideals. He couldn't like men because he wasn't a complete degenerate.

That's just how it was.

Maybe that's why running away with Carmela was so easy. He did genuinely like her in the same way that, deep down, he'd always liked Michael. But the difference with her is that she was a safe option. It's like the universe had presented him with two options- Man or woman. He loved them both equally but one was just the far more obvious choice in the context of his life, especially since he was on the cusp of making the change right when his family least expected it. He would be good for them, and he couldn't be good for them if he picked the riskier choice.

He was happy with Carmela. Really, he was. He loved her and vice versa. He was also finally stable in his living situation- As fun as being in Bob's prostitute gang had been, it didn't come with the soundest of sleep. And he'd outgrown them, really. Sure, sometimes he'd fantasize about running around with those boys again, really letting loose, but peace looked well on him and he wasn't soon to give it up.

The fantasies of Michael wouldn't stop either. Nor the guilt over leaving him behind. That was his one true regret in life, abandoning Michael. Not even necessarily that he'd moved on from the boy, no. That was inevitable (it had to be). But he felt bad for the way he'd gone about it because he knew Michael loved him and he also knew that Michael would have a hard time fending for himself without Scott there because of his Narcolepsy and his Autism, especially in a foreign country.

He'd never been Mike's caretaker by any means, but no one else ever really knew how to deal with his Narcoleptic attacks or his meltdowns except for Scott. Mike hadn't felt genuinely unsafe in a really long time because he always knew in the back of his head that even if he passed out or started having a meltdown in an inconvenient situation, Scott would make sure he was okay. But then Scott left, and he felt unsafe again.

Scott never could outrun that guilt.

Eventually, the guilt and the repressed feelings had to come to pass and he found himself sobbing in his wife's arms, admitting everything he'd buried down and wished desperately would've stayed buried. "I loved him" he said through tears, nearly choking from emotion. Carmela just smiled weakly and ran a soothing hand through his hair. She'd always been so good to him in that way.

"Loved who?" she asked. There were so many men in Scott's past, it could be difficult to keep track of them. Bob, Budd, Mike, Hans... The list went on for quite a while.

"Mike" he coughed out. "Michael. The guy who was with me when we- When I met you first" he explained, occasionally coughing or sniffing or gagging through tears. "I loved him. I fucking loved him, Car" he sobbed inconsolably. "And I abandoned him in the worst way possible" he continued. "How am I supposed to- How do- How-"

"Breathe" Carmela caught him off calmly. They went back and forth like that for a while and, by the end of it, Scott was clinging to her like his life depended on it, horribly afraid she would leave him. He couldn't even blame her if she did- No one wanted to hear about their husband's lingering romantic and sexual feelings for another man. But, she didn't. She couldn't. He loved him far more than anything else. She would rather eat nails than leave him over something she'd suspected for a while.

After that, he'd gone out for a rather long drive, just by himself, to Idaho. Why Idaho? Well, it reminded him of Michael. And he needed that right now. He needed Michael. He needed...

"Michael?" he said out loud to himself because there was an awfully familiar figure passed out in the middle of the road. He didn't want to believe it but, sure enough, as he grew closer and closer, he was more and more positive about the identity of the figure. Mike Waters was passed out in the middle of the road, clearly having been robbed if his lack of shoes were any indication.

Without thinking, Scott parked the car and got out. Fuck his parents. Fuck his ideals. Fuck all of that- Michael was in an unsafe situation and no one was around and he could do something.

"Come on, big guy" Scott said quietly as he lifted Michael's unconscious body, dragging him towards the passenger side of his vehicle. "I'm here, man. I'm here"

democrats:

joe biden - current president. doing...ok. he's pro trans rights and has been doing some good stuff to fight climate change, but he's like a hundred years old and

robert f kennedy jr - seems to have decent opinions on a lot of policy, but thinks that chemicals in the water are making kids transgender and has suggested that covid is a conspiracy by ashkenazi jews and chinese people

marianne williamson - anti vaxxer apparently, also i guess thinks love is the only thing that will defeat trump

republicans:

ryan binkley - conservative pastor that thinks marriage is "between one man and one woman", anti choice, wants to Build A Wall

doug burgum - republican governor that has actively passed anti trans legislation, anti regulation (unless what you're regulating is trans people ig????)

Steve watched from the edge as Robin, Eddie, and the kids made the most of the pool. They were playing, shouting, and just generally having a good time. After everything, and over two years of avoiding it, he was taking every chance to make happy memories in his pool again. Even if it meant dealing with seven rowdy kids on almost every nice day of the summer. 

He had been slowly building up to getting back in the pool, from the pool chairs, to the edge of the pool with his feet in the water, to getting into the pool, to finally being able to spend time swimming again. But this time, no matter how much he wanted to, he couldn’t force himself into the pool, only sitting on the edge. He hadn’t even changed into swimming trunks, instead choosing a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.

It was one of those days he hated his body, where everything felt like a betrayal. He couldn’t go shirtless, because it felt like the scars under his pecs were too obvious about what they really were. Swimming trunks were also a bit of a no-go, because they would cling and show off everything that he didn’t have. They weren’t even an option, because he needed to wear briefs for somewhere to stick a fucking pad. Because his period had made a surprise appearance that morning, and he was out of tampons.

He was incredibly anxious about anyone finding out. Robin was the only one he’d willingly told, in a bathroom floor conversation a week after Starcourt. Dustin had found out by accident when he overheard Steve awkwardly having to ask Claudia if she had any pads or tampons he could use when he’d started unexpectedly during a dinner with them. Everyone else had no clue, and he wanted to keep it that way, terrified of what would happen if anyone else found out. Especially Eddie, who he’d flirted with, and made out with a few times, but never going further than light touches.

He managed to avoid the pestering of everyone to get in, but Mike’s words cut deep.

“You’re acting like Nancy when she’s on her period.”

Steve gave a thin excuse to go inside, feeling like he’d had a bucket of water thrown over him.

“Stevie?” Eddie followed him in. “Don’t listen to Mike, he’s being an asshole.”

“But what if it’s true?” Steve burst out. “What if I am on my period? What if I’m transsexual?”

“That’s why you’re not swimming?” Eddie kissed Steve’s neck. “I’d say you’re still the prettiest boy I know. Just something new I know about you.”

Under a readmore for length:

Rafael: I find him to be the hardest, just because he's so smart and quick. Maybe work backwards with him--think of a good quip or a direct line of reasoning that he will follow, then muddy the waters with other, incorrect thoughts from those around him. That way, he seems like the reasonable one that is following a good train of thought.

He's also quick to hide his real feelings on things--he's private and not really a vulnerable man. So, he wouldn't be confessing feelings (whether love or frustration) on the first opportunity to do so. Also, as much as he hates his father, I do think that he's picked up the habit of anger > other emotions. Thought he can be patient, we've also seen him get angry or frustrated quickly over over emotions.

Rafael is a slow burn type of character, I think.

Sonny: He is a fixer! Yo do not go to Sonny to vent, because he will be giving advice, whether you want it or not. This can be a good thing, or a flaw, and can be written both ways.

He also wears his heart on his sleeve; he's pretty open about emotions. Though, there's definitely times--especially when he's frustrated--where he'll drop a snappy, one-liner that he expects you to ask about so that he can go into his frustrated monologue.

He's also the king of "I don't understand what's happening, but I do understand that you are upset, so I will support you anyways." Like with trans victims, he openly says he doesn't get it, but he never misgenders them and still fights for justice.

Though Sonny is seen as the goofball in early seasons, I do think he's one that will stay up until 3am having deep, philosophical talks and really dive into feelings.

Peter: He's a little harder, especially if you only watched svu (like me). We don't have him long, so a lot of him is made up. He's definitely more in touch with his feelings than Rafael, but he's not on Sonny's level of openness. I think he's willing to share the good things, but not the bad.

We've seen that he drinks quite often and had a threesome to take his mind off things (of course, if you're planning on having him in a relationship, I do not see him cheating), so he has some trouble with his negative emotions. He doesn't have good coping skills, and he hides himself away rather than opening up to someone.

Peter also came on after Rafael, whom the squad loved. There's a lot of mistrust and trying to figure the new guy out that has the squad disliking him. However, Sonny shadowed underneath him a little, too, so he sees Peter's real side; how he works and how passionate he is behind closed doors.

Mike: Like Peter, we don't have a whole lot on him. Unlike Peter, we do not have another show this character was on first for more research. As such, we really get to make him up.

His dad was always super strict with the squad, so we can only assume he was even worse to his son(s)--Mike has a brother, remember. And a mom, who is divorced (if I recall correctly).

But even with this and the constant pressure from his dad to follow the latter's dream, Mike is still a team player. He's nice, approachable--his one flaw is that he's trying to be perfect so quickly.

Personally, I think he puts on airs at work--as in, he's puffed up and Work Mike. But at home, he's allowed to relax and be himself. He has no one to impress--even in a relationship, I think he strives to have someone who he doesn't have to be Mike Dodds in front of.

“I grew up in the 1960s in Hermosa Beach, California – a golden South Bay surfer city. My father, Freddy Pfahler, was a legendary surfer who was in Bruce Brown documentaries, including The Endless Summer (1966) and Slippery When Wet (1958). Mary Heilmann, Lorraine O’Grady – in fact, I was in a performance this year with Lorraine, Laurie Anderson and Anohni at The Kitchen in New York called She Who Saw Beautiful Things. It was dedicated to the late Japanese trans performer Dr Julia, who played with Anohni and the Johnsons. And, in 2008, my work was shown alongside Mary Heilmann’s at the Whitney Biennial. I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with some of my favourite teachers and artists. I didn’t care for Joseph Kosuth, though. He once screamed at me: ‘Kembra, what are you?’ At first, I turned away, because his words really hurt me. Then I looked him in the eye and said: ‘I’m an availabilist. I make the best use of what’s available.’ Sometimes, anger can point you in a direction, and that’s what happened to me that day. I invented availabilism because he enraged me.

My first husband, Samoa Moriki. When I first saw him, he was dancing on the bar at the Pyramid Club in the East Village. We were married and worked together for 21 years. He was from Hiroshima and adored Japanese theatre: Butoh, Noh and playwrights like Yukio Mishima. But he especially loved extreme outside performances, in which people would dive from the sky into pools of water: physically courageous, beautiful acts. Samoa appeared at one of the first Wigstock drag festivals with Lady Bunny and collaborated with the great performance artist Tanya Ransom, who sadly died of AIDS. Ransom was queer but had a child with a woman called Paula Swede. At the time, many of us were gender fluid and simply didn’t talk about it: the language was only just being born. Later, important people like Ron Athey, Bruce LaBruce and Vaginal Creme Davis would articulate it.

It’s aesthetically so ugly. Change the size paper! Have someone do a sharpie drawing for the 2 dollar bill. The government has been so creative with stamps, they should get creative with money. The girls of Karen Black I haven’t spoken about enough Christian Music, Alice Moy, Jackie Rivera or Chloé Blackshire. These women have illustrated the songs with costumes and a strong dislike of show business. The show must not go on. We aren’t in the entertainment business, we are just artists who accidentally formed a band that at times has more of an outreach than decorating a wealthy person's home. I like that it’s hard to put a picture frame around what artists do collaboratively. I don’t have a team, a manager, or anyone advising us on relevancy. I don't care if you think I’m relevant. I don’t have a career. I have a life and it’s fun to share things we learn or discover. That’s where art serves its greatest purpose. What else do we do? War? Make prisons for sick poor people or create shit jobs that don’t pay? Being creative and sharing is a benevolent human trajectory that’s difficult to irradiate even under the most heinous conditions. It lifts the spirits.”

“TVHKB is an interdisciplinary rock band established by my first husband Samoa Moriki and myself. We were married for 21 years. The band is named after one of my favourite characters in the 1975 fi lm Trilogy of Terror by director Dan Curtis. In terms of the new album, it took me about ten years to compile the lyrics. I don’t have a label that supports me and therefore I don’t have any time constraints. My last album I shelved and didn’t put out … I guess I’m fortunate because I don’t have people pushing me for management of my time. When I was a child in Los Angeles, I decided that I didn’t want to live on that side of the tracks, in terms of representation and what not. People were always asking me, “What’s up with your makeup?” and “Why do you dress like that?” I’d say, “What makeup? I’m not wearing any makeup, I usually wear full body paint!” [Laughs] It’s a lifestyle choice, I guess. I chose to be who I want to be. I have very intelligent friends and family so I have the tools to learn how to not listen to people telling me that I can’t do what I want to do.

To me, a renaissance is a golden time when the lights get turned on. I think New York in the ’80s was certainly a golden era, but of course things change. The years leading up to the ’80s in New York saw some really powerful ‘consciousness raising’ changes – those were the years that gave us people like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and Alan Watts from the ’60s, when lights got turned on. Now, in 2021, it’s really nice to see young people getting to open galleries and run publications, but I think there has been a big change in corporate morality. There is still misogyny and racism here, those things have never been eradicated. I think a lot of larger corporations and galleries now monopolise on this.

The hard question is: how do we participate in capitalism knowing how virulent it is without utterly starving to death? It’s something young people, old people, everyone is dealing with. Dictatorships and facism have never been absent from the state of war, which transcends the modern day. Nowadays evangelicals are primarily interested in political power and getting their political agenda enacted, come hell or high water. Candidates who wear their religion on their sleeves and make it a big part of their pitch are getting nowhere. Case in point: Mike Pence. The former vice president is a former Catholic and current evangelical who has been going to different churches every Sunday to spread the Gospel of Pence. It is getting him some smiles, but that's all. No votes. If evangelical voters actually cared strongly about religion, they would be flocking to him. After all, he is one of only two Republican presidential candidates who is genuinely religious and is not faking it. And it is doing him no good at all. Evangelical voters don't actually give a hoot about Jesus. What they care about are almost entirely issues Jesus didn't address at length, for example abortion and which high school sports team trans students should play on.
