Hi! I’m CatboyBiologist.

Formerly a femboy, now a trans woman just starting HRT, and a PhD student in molecular biology. I started using this online persona as a fun, shitposty way to explore gender a few years ago. I post selfies (generally sfw, but somewhat sexy, so minors and ppl who don’t like that have been warned), rambles about science, tutorials and advice from the stuff I’ve learned by being a femboy in the past, nature pictures, stuff about the ocean, my adorable grumpy little tortoise, and unsolicited opinions on random nerdy topics. Any pronouns are fine. I don’t plan to socially transition for a while, and still present as a man most of the time, so I’m used to whatever you wanna use for me (for now, I’ll update this if that changes). Please send me pictures of your pets or other cute animals in your life!

As a scientist, I’m also documenting my transition! This google sheet will be updated at least monthly. I also have additional metrics I’m keeping to myself, and pictures that go with this, but I’m not sharing them publicly yet. Keep in mind that this is just one person’s experience with HRT, and may not represent universal trends!

As for terminology, I personally do think of myself as a “man who is becoming a woman” as opposed to having always been a woman. If that doesn’t resonate with your experience, I totally get that! But that’s why I freely call pre-HRT me a femboy, while still calling post-HRT me a trans woman. I’m also keeping the blog name as CatboyBiologist for the forseeable future, because at this point, Catboy just seems like a gender neutral term to me.

I’m also trying to put together a script for a podcast regarding how studying biology influenced my perspective on sex and gender- lmk if there’s any interest in that! It’s probably gonna be way too long and indulgent but oh well.

but i WILL use this time to talk about my hcs!!! and go in depth with them. going in order so if just you want an explanation for earth just skip to his section

SUN — sits comfortably somewhere in the transmascneu range i think. pangender, encompasses anything and everything. makes little to no effort into really transitioning simply because he has better things to do! he has a solar system to run! also he is above the concepts of gender. whether you think hes more "masc" or "fem" means nothing to him. hes the sun.

MERCURY — the most trans transmasc to ever trans. i dont know if hes more male or nonbinary leaning but that honestly just depends on the day for me personally. probably more nby. he 100% would go through with physically transitioning because the dysphoria is killer

VENUS — literally the complete opposite to mercury, the most trans transfem to ever fem. honestly see her as more butchy, but only really becomes more comfortable with being more masc once she has transitioned (transitioning in this case just meaning socially, though physically i imagine shes on the fence abt it. change and whatnot. she does have a bit of a chest though i think #boobs)

EARTH — transmasc like mercury, but unlike mercury he does not give a FUCKKK!!! i think you're confusing my earth for a trans man, which he very much is not considering hes a lesbian LMFAO. i see him being more bigender/genderfluid than anything, he doesnt really care to transition physically bc he likes his body! he likes the mother earth thing yk. obnoxiously transgender but you still cant misgender him. tragic. also yes he did keep them for fun

I'm currently reading Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan! I've been wanting to read Chinese fantasy books that aren't danmei so I gave it a try! It's a pretty nice book so far, although I feel like it's leaning more towards YA despite being labeled as adult fantasy, but oh well I'm still in the first half of book one so I feel like there's still time for it to get more serious...! It was labeled with "lovers to enemies" and I'm still in the lovers part so I'm looking forward to seeing where the enemies part will take the main couple ahehehehehee. These days I will also need to read Breton's Nadja and write an essay about it for class! I'm sort of curious about it as I've never read a surrealist novel before and I'm guessing it'll be quite different from anything I've read before...

My plan this year is to read 40 books! I've been slacking off with reading lately, so I really need motivation. Some more I'm planning to read are Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence by R.F. Kuang and the rest of N. K. Jemisin's Broken Earth series... I would ideally like to read 40 books this year, which I haven't done in a long time. first we have (drumroll) sylver, aka the guy who’s been my tumblr icon literally the whole time ive been here. sylver was originally a concept for a dnd version of sylv from dq11, and then i watched the entire potc series in one week. also he’s trans :]

sylver was an indentured servant on a merchant ship that was then attacked by pirates. the pirates kept sylver as a poorly-treated cabin boy. about a year later, he challenged the captain to a duel for his freedom, which. Did Not Go Well. at all. he stayed on the ship for a few years after that, until eventually he jumped off the ship in the middle of a storm. surprisingly, he survived and got picked up by a pair of bards. he traveled with them for a while (mostly as security. my boy cant carry a tune). however, he was still deeply messed up from his experiences aboard the pirate ship and had a desire for revenge, so he started traveling around and honing his skills until he could beat the captain in a duel.

second, we have (drumroll) jack! originally a oneshot character, jack is a bard who started as marius from les mis if marius stayed in the “empty chairs” number instead of getting married at the end. as with sylver, jack’s aesthetic and personality was influenced by a film i watched while making them; in this case, moulin rouge.

jack was a spy for a group of rebels in their hometown. they were very good at their job and thought victory was assured, until the rebellion was swiftly and brutally ended in one night. yikes. jack survived and escaped, but has since become extremely jaded. they make a living off of their fiddle and skilled storytelling.

oh boy. woof. i was initially overwhelmed trying to pick out an unpopular opinion but i realized. why settle for one!

yeah, furry stuff isn't all about sex for everyone. it would be fine if it was though. it is fine if someone's interest in furry stuff is purely a sex thing. in an AU where being a furry was all about sex, it would still be fine. trying to wash over the horniness of many (not all) furries in an attempt to defend is a waste of time. someone's investment in furry media can be for the exclusive purpose of jerking off and that's all good ✨

there are no requirements to being a furry. it's not an ontological state with necessary and sufficient conditions. you don't need a suit. you don't need a sona. you don't need an account on xyz website. IT'S NOT THAT SERIOUS. nobody gatekeeping furryness in either direction is worth your time. you can appreciate one piece of furry media every three weeks and call yourself a furry. you can follow three hundred furry artists and say you're not. it's not serious.

there is no essential political economy nor demographic composition to "furry culture" of any sort. there are commie furries. there are lib furries. there are nazi furries. there are lots of gay and trans furries and there are lots of cishet furries. furries are, modulo the sort of selection that occurs in filtering who has access to online and offline spaces where furry stuff might happen, basically just a subset of the general population. which is to say that being a furry is value-neutral, and is neither inherently "revolutionary" nor inherently reprehensible nor inherently gay nor inherently straight. there is no one furry culture, and subcultures and communities can differ just as much as with non-furries.

furry aesthetics are a site of ambiguity. this is hardly unique to the furrosphere, but people can and do derive pleasure from furry content that may not in design align with their orientations and that's fine. as a very masc trans lesbian, i enjoy a lot of mlm furry art because i can project my own experiences of gender on to what is depicted (caveat: there is also a lot of nasty transphobia and transmisogyny in furry subcultures trying to misread trans characters, just as in many other subculture)
