Winter 2021 anime

It has been a while since I wrote one of these reviews! But this season was SO good I wanted to talk about these series. There was so much good stuff that I ended up dropping some shows I want to revisit later. So here’s all the anime I completed in the 2021 Winter season.

NEW SERIES

Sk8 the Infinity

My favorite anime of the season. One of my favorites in a while. The staff working on it is just stellar (Director: Free!, Banana Fish) (Scriptwriter: Code Geass) (OST: Initial D) and produced by Studio Bones (MP100, FMA) no less! I cannot stress enough how good the OST is.

It’s about Skateboarding! Specifically, secret underground, no rules brawls in the “S” arena. Reki (innovative, artistic, engineer, talented, cheerful, sweet, best boy supreme) is a skater through every cell in his body. He meets Langa (cute, Canadian, snowboarder, angel), who recently moved to Japan after losing his father. Reki quickly pulls Langa into his world of skating and the two face the trials and tribulations of the S arena, and the colorful cast that inhabit it. 

The energy of the show is captivating and funny and a bit nostalgic. The skating tricks (and fails) are cool, and funny, and ridiculous, and an absolute blast to watch. The characters are charming and well rounded, and the story resonated with me in a very personal, motivating way.  I can’t recommend this enough! 

Wonder Egg Priority

CONTENT WARNINGS (sexual assault, abuse, self harm, suicide. If you need to know about certain warnings please make sure to look them up before starting)

Don’t let the pretty colors and cute girls fool you! This is a psychological horror magical girl series! With a similar look and production quality to any Kyoani series. After the suicide of her best friend, Nagase receives the ability to traverse dreams in the hopes of saving her friend. In those dreams, she and the girls she helps must confront their greatest fears and traumas. The enemies she and other “egg” owners face are grounded in reality, but twisted into grotesque forms.

The series absolutely does not shy away from heavy topics. The girls themselves represent a variety of personal internal struggles as well. Including a trans girl and wlw. Very good but very heavy anime.

Horimiya

Horimiya is simply romance done well. The characters are charming and likeable and funny. The cast is colorful and well designed with good dynamics. The main couple is established very early on, so there’s not a lot of pre-relationship drama antics. Rather, Horimiya explores the growing relationship between Hori and Miyamura. There are plenty of side characters though, that do go through the pre-relationship fumbles and bumbling if that is your jam. The side characters are also great and often become the focus of an episode.

Kemono Jihen

Cryptid kids solving mysteries! The character designs are amazingly well done. The color palette of the series is a visual joy to look at. Their powers are really cool and interesting. And the personalities hold together the show well.

Cells at Work: Black

It’s Cells at Work, but edgy! All the same fun shenanigans and random facts and character designs of cells at work, except this time the body is actively dying nearly every episode! These cells have to save their host body from fun things like Carbon Monoxide poisoning, ulcers, and erectile dysfunction, oh my!

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

I tend to be a bit wary of the highly oversaturated isekai genre by now. But this one actually caught my interest visually and with its characters. IMO it presents those tired tropes in a thoughtful way. It does explore a lot of the more unpleasant aspects of isekai genre (CONTENT WARNINGS). But the way it’s presented still feels organic and usually interesting. Also the main voice actor, Sugita Tomokazu, carries the show.

Rudeus was a very much worthless loser in his past life. So once he is reborn, literally as an infant, he decides to start from scratch and work hard at bettering himself. He still has much growing to do, however, and he does make bad decisions often. But he learns to be reliable when it counts, and hopefully will grow past his problematic shortcomings in time. 

Skate Leading Stars

Aka the other worse skating anime this season. It did have a strong opening episode, which is the main reason I kept with the series as long as I did. The main 3 characters have a strong and interesting dynamic. Their backstories are interesting and the drama and dynamics between them all was compelling. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast was not so much.

SEQUELS

Attack on Titan: The Final Season

A bit of a misnomer, since it’s not finishing quite yet with its split cour. I’ve been a fan of the series from the start, and I really enjoy where it has headed. Despite being in a new studio, I think they still adapted the story well, which is what matters most. I got used to the updated character designs pretty quickly too. Eren you’re one crazy bitch I love it. Can’t wait for the actual end.

Doctor Stone: Stone Wars

I liked season 2 even more than I did the first! Senku has really grown on me a lot as a character. Even more characters were introduced. Established characters grew their relationships and developed. The inventions were fun (and factual). I enjoyed this season a whole lot! I can’t wait for more.

Cells At Work

The original, also airing! The season ended up being pretty short, only 8 episodes, which was disappointing. I didn’t feel a lot of the same charm that season 1 had either. It was still good, and I would watch another season absolutely. But I was left wanting a bit more.

True Cooking Master Boy

Not much to say other than the same fun cooking buffoonery. If you enjoy food wars, or want to watch food wars but without the fanservice, this is it. 

CONTINUING SERIES (from last season)

The anime had a strong opening arc that I really enjoyed. However a lot of this season was kind of a dud for me. Everything up through where the demon Mahito was included, was great. Nothing special, just typical shounen with cool powers and a high budget anime. But I enjoyed it. 

Except, not really. I did not enjoy the school battles arc. I do not like any of the second years, or third years, or other schools. I only care about what the main 3, plus Gojo and Nanami and Sukuna were up to. I think the series is strongest when it is not at the school. The high school part of it really drags it down.

The mission they went on right after in the final episodes was fantastic. It really reminded me where the series shines. Which is in its demon investigations.

Black Clover

This is another hit or miss series. When it’s bad, I gotta skip episodes. I don’t care for filler and for a good handful of the cast. But when it does decide to step up, its great! The fights are engaging and visually stunning. The powers are interesting when they’re utilized well. The demon form in Asta is always such an interesting part of the story. The magic visuals overall are great.

Osomatsu San 3rd Season

Same show its always been. You should know by now if you like it or not. Some of my favorite gags and episodes ended up being in this season. 

Pokemon Journeys

I was falling a bit behind, but I did completely catch up recently because Gou has been snagging some pretty sweet catches. I love the Grookey he straight up stole from Team Rocket. And he got a hella sweet legendary. What a good kid! He’s so cute and I’m so proud of him! Also Ash just evolved his Sirfetch’d which is  one of my favss. I hope Leon comes back soon.

DROPPED

The Promised Neverland season 2

Once I heard from manga readers it totally derailed itself, I dropped out. I plan on picking up the manga. I didn’t want to be spoiled by a lackluster adaptation.

Otherside Picnic

I want to revisit this one. I kinda replaced it with Wonder Egg Priority, which was like a similar but better version of the story.

Yashahime

Not gonna lie, I totally forgot about it. Nothing major made me drop it. I just didn’t have enough interest to remember it lmao.

Re-Zero season 2

The haremy crap got too much for me. All the appeal of the first season is totally gone. The story wasn’t interesting and the new characters were bad.

That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime season 2

I never actually picked up season 2 to begin with. I finished season 1 and it was good enough. But i wasn’t interested enough to continue the story.

And that wraps it up. Winter season was packed, and there was a lot of good stuff to watch. Spring will have a hard time measuring up, but I don’t expect it to. I dropped or skipped out on some series that in a less hype season, I probably would have watched. Not a bad problem to have haha.

“I guess, sure.”

“How come you never talk about your dad?”

He turned to Langa with wide eyes, shocked that the question left his mouth. It was just curiosity, he knew. And there were pictures of his dad all around the house, so it wasn’t like his. His mom talked about him all the time, too. But it was a…rough subject.

“You don’t have to answer, I know sometimes complicated things are hard to talk about—”

He shook his head, sitting up from laying his head on his shoulder. “We, ah…we don’t really get along.”

“Anything you want to share? I won’t pressure you, but I’m always here to talk if you want to.”

Reki slowly nodded and ran his hand through his hair. His headband had been discarded some time ago when they started watching skating videos—when there was nothing to do, he curled into Langa’s side and he liked to play with his hair.

He tugged at the front of his shirt, like usual whenever he looked down at himself and sighed. “He travels a lot. For work, y’know. So he’ll be gone for weeks at a shot. I don’t really spend a lot of time at the house when he is home, though. More or less because he still sees me as his ‘little girl’ and refuses to admit anything else.”

Langa took his hand and kissed his knuckles. Despite how much skating he did and how scuffed up he got, his hands were always so gentle and soft against his.

“I’m sorry he doesn’t see you for who you are,” he said, running his thumb over the back of his hand. “I can’t imagine that.”

He shrugged, dejected. “I guess it doesn’t really matter. We used to be really close, but if he doesn’t want to know me, there’s no point in trying to make that relationship work. Not when there are so many people who do, y’know?”

Langa sighed and shook his head. He reached up and tilted his chin up to look at him. “You’re saying that because you want him to care, aren’t you?”

He nodded, leaning forward to lay his head on Langa’s shoulder again. Slowly, they wrapped their arms around each other, Langa pulling him into a comforting hug.

Reki felt hot tears prick his eyes and threaten to fall, but he held them back the best he could. Now wasn’t the time to lose it, he reminded himself. He didn’t need to be bitching about all this shit with his dad when Langa didn’t even have his anymore—

“It’s okay,” Langa mumbled into his ear. “I love you, Reki. You can let it out.”

And with those few words, he melted. There was nothing to stop those tears, not when there was so much to think about.

When he told his parents he liked boys and girls, his dad told him “as long as you don’t go parading it around, you’re okay”. And later his mom tucked him in (using that as an excuse to talk to him) and told him she’d always love him, no matter who he loved or what people said about him. Then, a year or so later, he told his mom he didn’t feel like a girl. And when he said “I like the name Reki”, she started using it, as did Koyomi. Chihiro and Nanaka were too young to know any different.

And then he told his father. A last-ditch effort to be open and honest with the same man that never looked at him the same after he told him he wouldn’t care if he fell in love with guys or girls (or anyone in between, and he learned more about that later). Unfortunately, his endeavor was useless—all he got was ignored and deadnamed and invalidated whenever he was home. For someone who spent all their free time with him when he was a kid, for everything to change so quickly in only a few years broke his heart.

There were people that loved him, sure. And he was getting around to loving himself, although that was a lot harder. And he didn’t know if he’d ever love anyone more than he loved Langa. The people that mattered to him cared about him and he knew that. They respected him enough to take him at his word when he said “this is who I am”.

But he craved that validation and that comfort from someone he didn’t have it from anymore, and he couldn’t explain how much that hurt.

“I’m sorry,” he said, face buried in Langa’s shoulder. “I shouldn’t be so upset, it’s useless anyway…”

He tried to pull away, but Langa held his face only a few inches away from his own. “Feel your feelings, Reki. You’re allowed to be upset about this. It’s something important and hard on you. It’s okay.”

Reki sniffed and smiled. He wiped his eyes for him. “Thank you, Snow. You mean a lot to me.”

Langa bumped his nose against his and offered a gentle smile. He felt a little lighter after getting some of that out, now, even if he didn’t tell him everything right away.

Things were gonna be okay. They always were.

Inspiration: None, I came up with this and it’s VERY self indulgent

You weren’t very good.

You had lost every race you had ever competed in, which had caused you to blow through skateboards like oxygen. Still, there was something about you that was so beautifully different from everyone else. Needless to say, Nanjo was instantly infatuated. He was, in a kinder sense of the word, hooked.

He started out by flirting with you nonstop, the constant flow of comments about your body, your outfit, etc. flooring you every time. He could tell you liked it, but you kept… running… away. It confused him. He had never been turned down like that.

You were blushing, you even giggled sometimes, so why did you turn on your heel and walk away every time? This confusion led to the greenet harassing Kaoru for your number. In cliche Cherry fashion, Joe did not get it…

...for a week.

You woke up, sheets on the floor, air and street traffic flowing in from your open fusuma. You groaned. Though this was annoying enough to make sleep difficult, the reason you were awake was because of a text. Every friend you had in your contacts was assigned a different ringer noise, so the fact that the noise was unfamiliar could only mean one of two things.

One, it was a spam message.

Two, someone had tried texting you.

You groaned again, sitting up to reach your phone that was lying next to you on the floor.

Unknown: Hi beautiful ;)

You groaned, flopping back onto your bed. It wasn’t that you didn’t like Joe: he was attractive, dangerously so, and his personality was exactly your type.

But that was just the issue—Nanjo was exactly what you wanted, but….

Were you what he wanted?

He obviously didn’t notice the binder, didn’t notice the packer, didn’t notice… Well, basically every obvious sign known to man.

You: How did you get my number?

Unknown: Aw, c’mon don’t be like that, Y/N! Aren’t you excited to be texting me?

You paused. You were honestly ecstatic--you’d been wanting to get to know him better. At the same time…

You: Delete my number, Joe.

After you sent it, you turned your phone on silent. It was cold, standoffish even, but you didn’t want to get with another guy who just thought of you as… well, a woman.

You got dressed, your thoughts racing. You were going to S tonight, you needed to blow off steam, and what better way to do that than getting your ass handed to you by Reki?

The race had gone just about as good as you thought it would. The winner got to pick something for the loser to buy them at the convenience store, so it wasn’t that big of a deal, but it still left Reki walking off with a stupid grin on his face to Langa.

“Hey, Y/N!”

You flinched, whipping around to the man that towered over you. Why was he talking to you? Everyone had turned to watch, eyes darting excitedly at the thought of getting to watch a beef.

He shot you a flirtatious grin, “Why’d you ghost me, pretty thing?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Joe,” you said, pretending to be fiddling with your wheels.

“Y/N,” he said, his voice suddenly soft. “I want you to be my girlfriend. Please,” he added on as if it was an afterthought.

Had you heard him right?

You felt your heart go through a painful clenching shock. You wanted to be his, you wanted to kiss him and hold him and hold his hand but… not as that. Anything but that.

Your heart thundered, your breathing coming out heavy.

“Y-Y/N?” he questioned, leaning down to you, your faces an inch a part.

“I’m a boy, you asshole!” you yelled, shoving him away and running off.

Your phone had been blown up with his texts for weeks. You hadn’t shown your face around S for weeks.

You had mainly just stayed in bed, crying and binge eating in depressing little intervals. You hadn’t read a single text from anyone, and there had been quite a few from quite a few different people.

You stood up shakily, deciding to go treat yourself to actual food today.

Dressing messily and beginning down the street, you eyed a fancy Italian restaurant, “Sia la luce,” and debated whether entering in your current state was complete blasphemy or not.

It was open, but no one was in there, so you concluded it should be fine. You stepped in with such confidence, but the minute you saw who was behind the counter you froze.

Kojiro’s face beamed the minute he saw you before toning it back and clearing his throat.

“Y...Y/N. Hi, it’s… well, it’s been a while.”

You sniffed, “Yeah, it has been.”

He gestured for you to come in and take a seat and while you did he walked over to the sign and turned it to the, “CLOSED,” side.

“I know you like girls so I just.. Wanted to tell you, you know?” you blurt.

He hums, sitting next to you.

“And well, I do find you attractive, ridiculously so, and you’re an amazing person besides that, but I didn’t want to lead you on, you know?”

He nods, a small smile on his face.

“What? You spit, annoyed.

“Y/N, I like boys, too.”

You can only muster an, “Oh.”

He chuckles, leaning in slightly.

You beat him to it.

“Kojiro Nanjo, be my boyfriend.”

“Of course.”

realized he was trans when he was around 8 or 9

he was talking to some of the kids in his class because he saw one of them skating and he thought it was so cool

so he asked how to get started as a saker

and the kid told him that he couldn't do it because he was a girl

reki was devastated first of all

and second of all he realized he didn't like being called a girl

at first he thought it was just because he had been told that he was a girl under hurtful circumstances

but as time went on he realized that even when the people he loved called him girly and femminine things he was uncomfortable

naturally, he talks to his mom

bc she's the best, duh

i can just see lil reki who was in the middle of his childhood crisis looking up at his mom with tears in his eyes because he thought he was just weird

the one he bought himself as a first board is sitting on the top shelf next to his magazines

he decided not to attempt to do hormone therapy at first but ultimately went on t when he was around 15

reki also got top surgery as a teen and he had to fight like hell to be able to get the surgery AND to get prescribed testosterone

he got so high off the anesthesia he ended up hitting on the nurse in recovery

his mom told him about it a few days later when he was feeling better and reki just went beet red

he never wanted to show his face there again

I like to think that when he was in the emergency room after he faced adam he was paranoid every nurse he talked to was the one he hit on

when cherry showed up reki panicked at first because he thought he was a nurse and had some very awkward storytelling to do

miya hears and NEVER lets him live it down

everyone knows reki is bisexual, and when reki himself first realizes he's attracted to guys he has a mini gender crisis because he thought it was all or nothing when it came to gay

and this means, with his already established love for women, him also loving men was ???/?// not very man??//??/

he's a little oblivious but it's fine because he talks to his sister about it and she smacks him and tells him what ~bisexuality~ is

has the absolute best support system from his mom and sisters to his friends at S

once he painted the trans flag on the bottom of his skateboard and got asked by a kid if he was a communist

when reki told langa he was trans, langa went home and asked his mom to help him make a cake

no reason other than he wanted to show his friend he was proud of him for telling him and being himself

langa's mom thinks its adorable and does the i-will-pinch-your-cheeks-every-time-i-see-you-like-an-aunt-or-something to reki every time langa has him over

reki got obsessed with calling everyone "dude" and "man" and "bro" in the first few years of him being out

it was pure hell for the kids in his class but they went along with it anyway because he was always super nice

a few of his friends have some old videos of this phase and regularly remind him of it as a running joke

the S fam all wore trans pride pins one year for pride month and someone started the rumor that cherry was the trans one

no one bothered to correct them but miya thought it was hilarious and made him a "best mom" t-shirt

any of his friends will beat transphobes in the streets

ESPECIALLY SHADOW

like he takes absolutely no shit from anyone when it comes to respecting trans ppl

there's a legend around S that one time shadow put three fully grown men in the hospital for misgendering reki

to this day no one knows if it's true or not

he lends all of his childhood clothes that he had before he realized to his little sisters

the type to forget he's trans sometimes

this leads to a lot of very confused people that don't know him well wondering if he is in fact trans or not

once a kid in his class was told he was trans and reki just never mentioned it and the poor child thought he was a trans girl and reki laughed his ass off when he asked about it

anyways everyone loves him 1000/10 recommend staning reki

hii finished sk8 and also watched the cindereki project!! i really love how reki's character arc played out it was very satisfying to watch and he's just a really well written protagonist imo! very much NOT a huge fan of whatever happened with adam bc it's just so.. ugh. like how is it fair that a seventeen yr old who was creeped on by this adult has to go on and teach the adult how to regain love for his hobby?? like dude. just. also. that ending scene between adam and tadashi was uhmm. well. it was something and i can't say i liked it very much. to be fair i should have seen it coming but still sjkdhkajshfs (it was kind of suggestive wasn't it? like i'm not overthinking??)

the cindereki project tho!! i loved it sm it was so cool and JOE BEING THE MUSCLE FAIRY DFJDJHLKLJFSKDHFSD it's just so well made!! one of my fav moments was when cherry just started writing all over miya's and shadow's faces dfhjhkjds also now i definitely see what you mean about renga not just being queerbait or whatever. having a dream of getting happily married to your Totally Platonic bestie??? i Know what You Are.

another thing is that i usually prefer watching subs instead of dubs but i've heard good things about the sk8 dub so i checked out a compilation and oh my god. the gems that are 'hey girl, are you hungry?' and 'don't worry bae, i'll protect you!' shdjhsdjhajkhd adam saying 'what's up bitches bros and nonbinary hoes' was surprising. if there's one thing i did not expect it was for the creep and asshole to be an ally to trans people. i mean good to know ig?? overall just voice wise i do prefer the original but joe's english voice is pretty good!

So Kazuki is adopted right. Here me out, but what if we make his birth mother Reki’s mom. Say Kazuki is about a year or so older than Reki. So the crossover would be happening about a year after the time skip at the end of Sarazanmai so Kazuki would be 18? Say Kazuki wants to meet his siblings that his mother had mentioned in their meeting. So he sets up a visit and goes to visit the Kyan household and meet his half siblings <3 possibly bringing Haruka beloved along too. Meeting Langa and potentially the rest of the gang if Reki decides to drag him around.

Plus we would get to see more timeskip Kazuki in this, know about the Golden Trio’s soccer playing, and all that good stuff since it’s been a year since Toi got out of jail :3 and there’s no way in hell Kazuki wouldn’t ramble about Toi and Enta to anyone who would listen

I couldn’t decide if I wanted to integrate the trans girl headcanon into this au (hence the he/him pronouns I just defaulted to canon for this shdhshshd) but I think it’s be very interesting if that was added in so yes.
