A Waste of Air (Why Inasa Sucks as a Character)

Reasoning

Boring quirk (wasted potential, uncreative)

Wind powers are so underutilized and Inasa's is no different. It effectively amounts to 'what Hellflame does but worse'.

Whereas Enji at least has some (albeit very limited) control over the form of his fire and where it comes from his body, Inasa can only move wind around in a spiral and also use it to propell himself.

His existance only serves to be a hindrance and an obstacle both to the plot and to the characters

Literally only exists as an obstacle to Shouto, backtracking on Shoto's previous growth just so Bakugo (authors pet-cough) won't fail alone.

His introduction downplays Momo's accomplishments and skill. Taking her top spot in the Recommendation Exam by turning it into a technicality because he raged quit. (she isn't even in the flashback)

His stupid backstory.

His backstory is so fucking contrived that I almost don't want to even bother going into it.

Firstly, his reaction to Shoto's demeanor is so disproportionate that it's pathetic

Oh boo hoo, your idol was mean to you. Yeah that would work, with anyone but Shouto. It's veery similar to the Hitoshi problem. Where he bases his opinion about something/someone he knows nothing about.

Telling Shoto he's 'just like his father' is probably the worst thing you can tell him.

Secondly, He takes Shoto's reaction/rejection in the worst way possible. If what Enji had done or said had been more severe, then his reaction would be understandable as a trauma response.

However why don't we look at what Enji said:

Presumably he knocked Inasa out of the way, while an incredibly unprofessional and cruel thing to do and say (especially to a child who just wants an autograph). It does not justify his reaction towards Shoto after the entrance exam nor at the licensing exam.

It doesn't justify him throwing away his spot at UA like a child.

And it certainly doesn't justify Inasa antagonizing him in the middle of an exam!

It makes Isana come off as short sighted and inconsiderate, ironically the very same way he views Enji and (because he can't or won't differentiate the two) Shoto.

How I would Write Them

I'm not just going to sit here and moan about how lacking Hori's writing can be at times, no.

I'm going to do something about it.

Genderbend (or trans that gender)

This show is in desperate need of female characters getting the spotlight and being allowed to show their skills.

Change her backstory to emphasize Enji's sexism:

Basically she goes up to Enji after a villain arrest and excitedly tells him about how she's a fan and has been practicing very hard. She creates a decently sized tornado in her palm to show him (not much bigger than a canteen)

He then scoffs dismissively (almost snickering at her) and says something like: "Someone of your constitution would never make it to the top, stay out of the way girl and let the heroes handle it"

he glares at her before walking off with his back turned to her.

He then tosses her notebook back behind his back, burning it's corner in the process by his careless quirk use

(bonus points if the flame is snuffed via landing in a puddle, showing how her dreams were metaphorically "put out".)

Have Shoto's (unintentional) attitude remind her of Enji's insult (by dismissing her accomplishment of besting him [while still losing to Momo)

Make her resemble Rei (but not be related):

Adding another layer of connection and trauma for Shoto.

Have him seek her out instead and make her want nothing to do with him (at least at first, with the exam later forcing them to work together and gain a mutal understanding)

Upgrade her powers to something besides (Wind go wooosh).

This could be anything, personally I'd make it varied, like she's able to both mimic Air Walk and Air Cannon but can also fly around, create tornadoes and even create air pockets. Thus showing her growth and efforts.

I will say this again, Pro. Hero. Family, Make her a legacy kid. Show just how biased Hero Society can be towards those with Heroic ties.

Don't toss her after the arc is done, keep her appearances consistent, yet spaced out.

Have her appear after the Licensing Exam, highlight both 1A's growth by having her grow with them.

I would also merge the remedial course with the Licensing Exam as a sort of second portion that involves showing restraint and kindness, as well as problem solving and situation awareness in a domestic setting.

Showing that heroism is or should be more than just "punch harder, punch with feeling".

Lastly here's the design I came up with and a little information to boot.

(nothing fancy just a head and a 3rd quarter sketch, no Hero costume yet)

Isana Yaorashi, Kanji: 勇渚 (勇: brave, strong, resolute. 渚 ripple or wave (used here as a substitute for "wave" of air) also used to represent the "ripples" Enji's insult had on her life and the she impressions that she leaves on others)

Legacy Child, comes from a long line of heroes, though her parents were not about that life. Her grandfather is the one who recommended her for UA and later Shiketsu: Yoroi Musha.

Holds an intense grudge against Endeavor for his sexism and his careless/cruel tendencies. Isana wishes to show the world that "heat" isn't what makes a hero.

Personality: Very intense, a fighter to her core. Isana seldomly backs down from a challenge, however she's more than willing to push that aside to help someone in need.

Applied for both U.A and Shiketsu in advance, left due to Shoto's attitude being to remincent of an encounter she had with Endeavor's true face during her childhood.

Placed Second in the Recommendation Exam at U.A then dominated Shiketsu's Entrance Exam with a total of 100 points!.

Probably got into fights alot as a kid. Probably for good reason too.

Sometime in middle school, while on his way home from school, someone accidentally uses their quirk on Shouto that gives the target some traits of their ideal body.

So she realizes, with some awe, that she's now a girl and her scar is gone too (no, she doesn't know why this happened or even what being transgender is). She has an idle thought that her dad might not even believe that it is her, when she gets a spontaneous plan.

She runs away.

With hair dyed black, there's not much tying her to Todoroki Shouto, aside from the eye color and general face shape. She feels pretty confident that she's not going to be found, unless she starts throwing her quirk around. So she's pretty happy that she's now free of that man (she spares an idle thought to Fuyumi and Natsuo, but she doesn't really know them all that well so they must not be too worried right?)

However, living on the streets is harder than it sounds. Just a couple of days later, she's miserable.

Until a green-haired boy reaches out his hand to her.

(With Shouto gone for days, Todoroki Enji realizes there's only one explanation- the boy was kidnapped. His other kids are inconsolable, crying into each other's arms, but he ignores them and focuses even more on his work, dedicating huge chunks of his agency's time and effort to investigating human trafficking rings.)

She rejects his help at first, but he keeps offering over the next couple of days so she eventually accepts. He invites her over to his place for a meal and to wash up. When he asks for a name, though, she doesn't really have anything. Shouto is too obvious, and besides, that's not really a name for a girl anyhow. So, off the top of her head and in a hurry, she's inspired by the person she loves most and calls herself Reina, taking her mother's name and just adding a bit onto it.

The boy, Midoriya, is a little flustered to call a girl by her given name, but does so for lack of any other option.

Midoriya's mother immediately takes to her, but the newly-christened Reina doesn't really understand why. There's not much to love about her. (Meanwhile, Mrs. Midoriya is planning future dates between her son and the nice girl he brought over.)

When they ask her why she'd been on the streets, she gives the Midoriyas a vague story about her family not being nice and lets their imaginations do the work. It maybe works a little too well- a one-night invitation suddenly extends to two, then three, then indefinitely.

It's nice, she thinks, to not be training all the time. Midoriya is pleasing to be around, and has a desire to be a hero not to be the number 1 but to save as many people he can (she respects that). He trains on his own at the beach, with a man he's vague about but seems to be a good, honest man (unlike Endeavor). And Mrs. Midoriya listens to what she has to say, and likes to suggest new hobbies for her to try out. Knitting isn't for her, but she takes to baking, and starts eating lots of sweets and other things she hadn't been allowed to try as Shouto.

How little she knows about girls' anatomy and how to be a girl seems to distress Mrs. Midoriya, who cries when she learns Reina hadn't had any periods before staying with them (and boy, that had been a surprise). She wonders just what tales of abuse Mrs. Midoriya is coming up with in her head, but for now, she won't dispel the nice woman's notions.

Mrs. Midoriya somehow gets her enrolled in Izuku's middle school under a fake surname, though she ends up in a different class than him. It's different from before, being just some girl rather than Endeavor's son.

(Meanwhile, in an old building used by a prolific quirk trafficking gang, three attackers have an unplanned meeting. A pro hero, trying to find his missing son. A schoolteacher, driven to vigilantism by a desparate need to not lose another brother. And a smalltime villain, trying to return the gameboard to how it's supposed to be so he can start his game. For better or for worse, they all recognize each other.)

Reina settles into her new life, enjoying herself greatly. She likes living with the Midoriyas, she likes being a girl, she likes cooking and baking, she likes eating the food she makes, and she especially likes spending time with Midoriya, who she now calls by his given name Izuku.

She also likes not training, which is having some not-totally-unwanted effects on her body. Unused muscle starts to atrophy, and fat tissue starts to replace it from all the food she's been eating. She idly notes that if this keeps up, she'll eventually look like Mrs. Midoriya.

Well, not that that's a bad thing. The woman is an amazing mother and a great role model, so why wouldn't she want to be like her?

Her new classmates, though, ridicule and make fun of her for "getting fat". But she's just confused and doesn't get why that's a bad thing.

Eventually, Izuku starts high school, getting into UA as planned and manifesting a very late quirk along the way. Reina is happy for him, though she wouldn't want to be there with him. Maybe before she ran away, there were some vague plans of becoming number one with just ice, but she's gotten too attached to her current life. UA is too public. She cannot hide from her father there.

(Elsewhere, an operation silently begins to take shape. Heroes move,taking aim at Jaku Hospital and a doctor working there, using information provided by a top hero's eldest son, miraculously found years after his supposed death. The aforementioned hero will be on the mission, but his new intern, working with him for a time as a way to keep a vigilantism charge off her rap sheet, will be staying behind.)

Time moves on. Izuku trains with his new classmates, and Reina attends a local high school, with bullies still trying to target her but getting turned away by her lack of reactions. (Once, someone tries to trip her as she's walking. Long-unused instincts kick in, and she finds herself pinning the offender to the ground. The bullying starts to die down after that, as her classmates gain a sense of respect for her.)

She notices her father is being mentioned for often lately, and even briefly sees a piece of a news headline reading "ENDEAVOR'S SON", so she avoids the news as best she can. She doesn't want to know what people are saying about Todoroki Shouto.

(In Central Hospital, a former small-time villain who was a key part in the takedown of All for One and his operations lies severely burnt, doctors warning he may die of his wounds, new and old. Pro Hero Endeavor, indebted to the man in more ways than one, funds massive research into the remains of Dr. Ujiko's projects to try to save him. This would be the third time he loses a son, but who's counting?)

Reina starts dating Izuku, after many months of doing so in all but name. She admits her past of being a boy to him, though not the specifics. He's shocked, but accepting. He assures her that even if she goes back to being a boy, whether by chance or by choice, they can keep dating. For the first time in many many years, she cries tears of joy. (Izuku's last tears of joy were that morning, when he saw her smiling after eating a cinnamon roll.)

Izuku starts doing better in class and gaining his footing as a hero-in-training, to mixed emotions from her. She's glad for him, but there's still a part of her that wants to be a hero as well. But with her secret identity and her extremely unique quirk, that's not really possible.

One day, she decides to tell Izuku who she really is. Her whole past, everything. He listens silently, but when she touches on Touya's death, he interrupts.

"Umm, he's not dead though? He was in the news and everything. Last I heard, he was doing well recovering in the hospital..."

Reina catches up on what's been going on with Endeavor since she left. She doesn't really want to speak with him, but she does want to see Touya. And, she realizes, her other siblings as well.

And her mother, terrified as she is just thinking of putting herself before the mother she hasn't seen in over a decade.

So, with reassurances from Izuku and his mom, she does what she knows she needs to do sooner or later.

She washes the dye out of her hair, puts on her favorite turtleneck sweater, and approaches the Todoroki mansion for a visit.

💚 WHY IT'S YURI: there is something about repressed trans girl shouto that really speaks to me. Both the angst and comfort potential is off the charts. Plus momo will always be a lesbian in my mind.

Enji: I got it! You're that kid from Shouto's first sports festival! But you look a little different...

Bakugou: I mean yeah I-

Enji: You let your hair grow out.

Bakugou: I thought you were joking!

Honestly it's not even that because he knows who Katsuki is (like this would happen during the arc where Shoto, Izuku and Katsuki are Endeavor's work study students so clearly he chose the kid and has his school file)

But it's just.

This might actually be before Enji learns about gay people. And it's DEFINITELY before he learns about trans people.

So it's just a thing of like. You tell him your pronouns and he's like 'okay sure'. Anyone tries to misgender you? Hm they're probably being an asshole because obviously you'd know what gender you are better than anyone else, right?

So he gets to meet Katsuki properly and all three kids go 'she's a girl', so he rolls with it and says she's a girl too.

'But didn't the Sports Festival make a big deal of boy vs girl on the Katsuki/Ochako fight? Wouldn't he know from-'

The people who started that heckling from the crowd were sexist assholes so clearly they were mistaking Katsuki for a boy because she's kinda butch.

He does learn about trans people /eventually/ which certainly explains some things but like. He's just rolling with it.

Class 1-A Headcanons! (part three)

I’m mainly going to be focusing on appearances and sexuality, as that is depicted in the images I edited.

Continuing with characters I headcanon as masc identifying (trans & cis guys). If any of your faves are not present please check part one & part two!

Included in this part: Tenya Iida, Mashirao Ojirou, Eijirou Kirishima, Rikidou Satou, Katsuki Bakugou, & Izuku Midoriya

Tenya Iida (he/him)

Tenya Iida is a bicurious asexual. He previously had a crush on Ochako Uraraka, but thinks he may be interested in Sero Hanta.

He often gets muscle cramps in his legs and has had panic attacks before, but is working to mitigate both.

He enjoys orange juice, action movies, and history. He reads text books for fun, but can also be found in the common room spending time with his peers or running around UA.

Mashirao Ojirou (he/him)

Ojirou is transmasculine and heterosexual. He is dating Tooru Hagakure.

He is very bottom heavy due to his quirk, but other than that is relatively unhindered in his everyday life.

He enjoys martial arts, gardening, and rom-coms. He can be found in UA's gym training with any number of his classmates or on his monthly date with his girlfriend.

Eijirou Kirishima (he/him)

Kirishima is transmasculine and gay. He is dating Katsuki Bakugou. He is also considering using neopronouns, but not quite certain yet.

He suffered greatly with depression in middle school, but has gotten better with therapy. He is slightly dyslexic and has ADHD. Later in life he will develop joint problems due to his quirk, but he's doing pretty well as of right now.

He enjoys swimming, weight training, and punk music & fashion. His like of swimming comes from his mom's DNA, which means he's often in the pool with Tsuyu Asui. However, he is often in the gym with his peers, sparring or otherwise working out. He, Tokoyami Fumikage, & Kyouka Jirou are a part of fake club they call the emo/goth/punk alliance, which meets monthly.

Rikidou Satou (he/him)

Rikidou is the only cisgender heterosexual in class 1A. He is not currently interested in dating anyone in his class, but there's a really cute girl at a cafe he frequents that he's recently taken note of.

He has high blood sugar due to his quirk's need for sugar and as a result gets frequent headaches and is very tired. He also has acne.

He enjoys fitness, meal planning, baking, and stand-up comedy. He's often in the kitchen, cooking or baking for himself or the class. He usually will watch a comedy routine on a streaming service while his food bakes.

Katsuki Bakugou (he/rose/blast)

Katsuki is agender and achillean. He is dating Eijirou Kirishima.

Rose is hard of hearing and slowly going deaf from his explosions. He also gets acne & rashes due to his quirk, as having nitroglycerin on his skin all day isn't the best for it.

Blast enjoys cooking, sparring, playing the drums, and punk music. He is often in the kitchen around dinner time, but otherwise is in his or Eijirou Kirishima's bedroom working or reading. Rose also plays rose's drums at least twice a week.

Izuku Midoriya (he/they/rose/petal/blast)

Izuku is omnisexual, polyamorous and identifies with the term rosboy (which is roughly, a feminine guy). He is dating Shouto Todoroki and Ochako Uraraka. Additionally, they are metamours with Tsuyu Asui and Momo Yaoyorozu.

Rose has early onset arthritis, especially in rose's fingers due to rose's quirk.

Petal enjoys gardening, working out, note taking, and volunteer work. Blast is often out of the dorms at the local animal shelter or elementary schools, assisting with whatever blast can. However, he usually in the gym or his bedroom when he is home, training, taking notes or watching old hero flics.
