It does help, thx! I always felt guilty about skipping fics that sound interesting, but have a non-canonical trans character becoming trans. For me it’s mainly the identity of the character, similar to what you said. Like, I can’t really identify them as anything other than who they are so having a character who’s always been a he/him or she/her or they/them suddenly identify as something else just doesn’t feel like the same character to me anymore even though they act the same as in canon. I know it’s probably a shallow reason, but it’s mine.

It's always difficult. Like in my main RWBY fic, Yang *is* trans but she's a trans woman who transitioned young.

I suppose it really depends on how you view the canon character, like to me, Shoto Todoroki from MHA just screams trans girl who is about to break her egg.
