people really liked the first nb reggie post and i still have a lot plenty to say so here’s quite a few more nonbinary reggie headcanons. this is part two electric boggieloo. now with trans guy bobby mixed in! (it’s long so i put it under a read more)

- ‘boy’ doesn’t perfectly sit right for reggie like a shirt that fits so tight it sticks to his skin uncomfortablely but ‘girl’ doesn’t feel totally better either. now the shirt is too big that it swallows them whole instead. it’s closer. not entirely an improvement, but it’s not worse. he’s something in the middle maybe something different entirely. not quite a boy. not quite anything. maybe boy adjacent with a fem flare? fitting somewhere snugly in the unconforming spaces in between genders?? it’s hard to say. he choses not to think too hard about it

- but reggie was always drawn towards the idea of using makeup or wearing dresses and honestly didn’t think it was strange thing to want to do. they assumed everyone was like that. but he got caught one too many times dressing up in his mom’s clothes and after while fiddling in her makeup drawer stopped being cute. their dad made it very clear that reggie was an outlier to the norm and so they made sure to tell no one how they felt to avoid hearing those kind of nasty words from fans or worse his friends. always deciding to push their feelings to the sidelines. however some days it was easier to ignore than others.

- at like the very start of the band reggie had already settled into his more punk rocker aesthetic meanwhile bobby (who’s still in the closet as a trans guy at this time) used it as an excuse to dress more masculine in the name of grunge. reggie thinks bobby is the coolest person for openly testing out their boyish style but was also a little envious that bobby could play around with his gender expression more than they could. although it had caused bobby some trouble at home and he’d get harassed after gigs so it wasn’t all great. reggie took to staying close to bobby after shows, sometimes reggie got brave enough to put his arm around bobby’s shoulders and lean in more when they whispered to each other. if reggie’s cheeks go warm whenever bobby gets extra close, well, he’ll ignore those feelings too

- whenever the band plays at all age clubs they always see teens with much more ‘out there’ fashion and reggie silently longs to try out some of the looks he sees in the crowd (one crowd member was wearing a torn silk under dress with big boots and wild makeup. reggie couldn’t tell if they were a boy or girl and couldn’t stop thinking about them off of that fact alone)

- apparently bobby had also noticed them and mentioned how cool he thought they were. alex and luke said they don’t remember seeing them but if they’re rocking out to sunset curve then they must be pretty chill. seeing his band mates be so causal with that sort of thing gave reggie a little more faith that they could just maybe try some of the more feminine looks he been wanting to do

- a week after that gig reggie steals eyeliner black lipstick and mascara from the corner drugstore. lays it out on his bed to stare at it only to hide it in the studio later without ever opening any of it. at least if someone finds it there he can say it belongs to bobby despite the fact bobby has never worn makeup in his life. reggie knows this because bobby actively rants about his mom trying get him to be more girly

- but it’s just reggie’s luck that bobby is the one to find the box of makeup saying if reggie was really going be bringing girls into the studio to at least have them clean up after themselves. reggie notes the way bobby is red in the cheeks and acting more upset then if had been luke or alex to do the same but in an impulsive no brain thinking move has reggie simply say “actually those are mine”

- bobby is silent for a moment and reggie thinks they made mistake. just because bobby dresses like a boy doesnt mean they’d be okay with reggie doing girl things, reggie thinks this while waiting for a tell that he should cut their losses and run out of the studio. but reggie and bobby have always been close. always understood each other in ways that alex and luke didn’t. so before they even turn around to leave bobby asks if reggie knows how use any of the makeup and when they say no bobby adds softly ‘i can show you. if you want’

- that night bobby sneaks reggie into his room and teaches them the basics of makeup. ‘i don’t use the stuff but my mom forced me to learn’ bobby explained holding the mascara up to reggie’s eyelashes. ‘i have a box full of stuff. it’s all ours if you want it’ being so close reggie can see how pink bobby’s cheeks are, soaking in the warmth of his hands while he holds reggie’s face still. ‘i’d like that.’ they mutter back softly

- that night is filled with sharing intimate personal space as bobby does reggie’s makeup. lingering touches and hushed giggles and bobby holds reggie like they’re something important, carefully showing how do eyeliner without poking their eye out. bobby shows them how use the lipstick for a cool under eye smudged look and reggie stares amazed at themselves. bold black eye makeup and shiny pink lips from the lipgloss bobby used for them. it feels good. in their excitement reggie kisses bobby on the cheek, it leaves a glossy lipstick stain on his cheek but he doesn’t seem to mind

- ‘i’m never taking this off’ reggie declares with sudden confidence. ‘you’re going get your pillow dirty sleeping with it. i’ll do again for you when we get our next gig.’ that draws reggie back into a harsh reality. ‘what? no no no i can’t wear this during gigs. what are the guys going think? what if fans stop listening because they think i’m weird?’ bobby shrugs. ‘the guys are cool, you know that. and so what if we lose some fans? i mean, why would we want lame ones like that anyways’ bobby says it so easily like it’s the most obvious thing in the word and reggie relaxes a little at that

- reggie spends the night in bobby’s bed and they’re serious about not wanting to take the makeup off so bobby says if they take it off for bed then he’ll paint their nails tomorrow. reggie almost runs to the sink

- the next day bobby does paint reggie’s nails. a bright red to match their bass. alex and luke take notice but don’t question it. alex observes reggie like he’s looking for something, a tell of some sorts but says nothing. luke notes the paint will chip after a few songs if he doesn’t use a pick. nothing really changes expect that it’s not long before almost every gig bobby does reggie’s makeup (even though he can do it themself now). people think it’s a gimmick. reggie ignores the stares and questions.

- eventually bobby comes out after practice one day. ‘i’m a guy by the way. hope that isn’t weird. oh and i got a gig down by eat and beats’ says it almost too causally like it was an afterthought to mention it but reggie knows bobby and knows he was probably worried himself sick over bringing it up to the band and was playing it cool because bobby tried to play everything cool despite being a dork like the rest of them. the band adjusted fast and it seemed bobby was finally less tense, letting go of a breathe he’s been holding for years now. reggie wishes they could do the same but isn’t even sure there’s a word for people like them

- later alex comes out. he’s gay and nothing and everything changes the same way it had when bobby came out. sunset curve plays behind a gay club a month later. reggie sees a lot people who he can’t tell what their assigned sex is and thinks about that night for weeks after. it was a good show. a tall butch liked his makeup and nails. six months later they play at another gay bar this time reggie wears a long flowing skirt that he stole from his mother’s closet, having dyed it black and sewed red trimming on the bottom paired with his leather jacket and steel toe boots. a street queen calls him pretty

- two weeks later bobby kisses them after a show, tasting of mint and beer, and says he doesn’t care if reggie is or isn’t a boy. reggie kisses back and grins unsure if they’re one or the other. honestly kissing a boy throws them into another spiral of if he is or isn’t straight and what that means. reggie can’t ignore any of their feelings anymore but it feels less scary having bobby with them who can relate partly to the gender struggle + the rest of the band’s support (alex even gives reggie his sister’s old clothes to experiment with and luke becomes reggie and bobby’s hype man for their dysphoric days)

- reggie avoids thinking too hard about most things but decides to reflect a little. he knows he likes girls and guys are pretty great too. and everyone in between are just as catching to his eye. bobby says they’re bi and it clicks for reggie but gender is another story. he knows he likes makeup, the way it makes their eyes pop. likes wearing skirts, giddy over how the fabric sways on stage when they dance and how it feels lose on his hips. but enjoys fitted t shirts and pointed boots and short combed back hair. reggie isn’t sure how be masculine in a way that fits them and is pretty sure he’s doing femininity wrong but does it anyways. he might not know a word for what they are. wanting to be tough and smooth and soft and rough all at the same time but the band don’t question them. just going along with it and he’s thankful. maybe they’ll figure it out later on. maybe they’ll find more people like him. maybe in the future there’ll be more words to help describe who he is but for now they’re doing okay

But gist is Modern AU, Everybody Lives, Luke/Bobby and other ships that aren't relevant for this fic. This takes place a couple years after CJ's fic, once Luke and Bobby have moved in together. “Oh,” Flynn says, surprised, when the door swings open. “I thought you were at work.”

Bobby looks her up and down— at her flannel pajamas and sleeping bag tucked under one arm, the mutilated head of a twenty-year-old teddy bear sticking out of one end. He blinks and looks abruptly exhausted, like he doesn’t know what he did to deserve being disturbed by her everything first thing in the morning. Even though it’s four o’clock in the afternoon.

“Shift starts at six,” he says, voice all crackly like he really did just wake up. “Are you… Did we have band stuff I forgot about?”

“Oh, no,” Flynn assures him. “I’m actually here for—”

“She’s here for me, babe!” Luke appears in the doorway, tossing an arm around Bobby’s shoulders. He’s wearing plaid pants and hippopotamus slippers, shirtless so his top surgery scars are on proud display. “Sup, Flynn.”

“Sup.”

Bobby still looks painfully confused, so Flynn throws him a bone. “Your boyfriend invited me over for a slumber party. We’re gonna hate-watch Fifty Shades of Grey.”

“Hey, I never agreed to that,” Luke protests, tugging Bobby out of the doorway so Flynn can come in. “I still say we should hate-watch the 2010 Percy Jackson movies, they’re much more fun to yell at.” He shuts the door, then kisses Bobby on the cheek and pushes him down the hall toward the bedroom. “Go get ready for work, sweets. You’ll catch up.”

“I just didn’t know you guys were friends,” Bobby grumbles, but he obediently heads for the back of the apartment.

“He’s still waking up,” Luke apologizes. “Graveyard shift’s been kicking his ass.”

Flynn winces sympathetically. “I can imagine. When do you guys even have time to see each other?”

Luke shrugs. “We make do.” He starts toward the kitchen, calls over his shoulder, “Popcorn? Soda?”

“Yes and yes,” Flynn pleads as she follows him. “Thanks for having me over, by the way.”

“Sure, man!” Luke pulls two Dr. Peppers out of the fridge and hands her one. “Thanks for coming. I figure if you and me are gonna keep having deep conversations in parking lots, we should probably hang out more outside of band practice.”

“Totally,” Flynn agrees. “And what better way to get to know each other outside of crisis mode than by watching terrible movies in soft pajamas together?”

“Exactly.” 

Luke fist-bumps her, and Flynn can’t help but grin. She forgets, sometimes, in the craziness that is her life, how much she really likes Luke. Tonight’s gonna be fun.

Today’s the day, she repeats in her head, allowing a grin to spread on her face. The day she’s been waiting and preparing for for almost a year.

She doesn’t think she’ll be gone for longer than a few days, and she knows what plants and berries are edible in the area and how to check for clean water, and she is pretty sure she will pass one town or the other on her way so she isn’t too worried. She really hopes her family won’t be either because she hasn’t exactly told them about her plan.

Her plan of riding to the castle hidden by walls of roses, her plan of entering it, her plan of freeing the kingdom from their curse. She knows it’s time. She’s heard the tales and legends and if her calculations are correct – and she knows they are – then the century is over, the 100 years have passed and it’s time for someone to lift the curse. And Julie wants to be the one.

So here it is my Julie And The Phantoms hc about their sexualities and genders:

• Alex Mercer:

He uses He/Him pronouns and he's gay.

At first he thought he was bisexual because during his highschool years he had a “crush” for this girl. When she kissed him, he was like: “Nop, nothing happened. Guess I'm gay”.

He had a lot of problems at his house because of this. So, after his coming out, he started spending more time at Reggie's (for both own good).

• Reggie Peters:

He uses He/Him pronouns, but he once tried they/them but it didn't feel right. He's so bisexual but in a repressed phase/doesn't-know-it phase.

He actually always have thought he wasn't straight but when he once talked about this with his parents they shouted at him, telling him that he was normal and not a faggot.

When Alex sorta lived in his house two things happened: first, his parents stopped arguing and fighting with each other so that “happy family” could go on; second, he actually had a huge crush on him.

• Luke Patterson:

He uses He/They pronouns but actually he doesn't really care 'bout that, so if you only use “He„ or only “They„ he doesn't mind. He's been questioning his sexuality since Alex's coming out, but he just removed this idea. But recently he started seeing Nick and Reggie in a different way that scares him (Alex told him he's probably omnisexual or pansexual).

He had a LOVELY family, that didn't care about that, even if his dad struggled with using the right pronouns. But Luke didn't care, he loved his dad for trying.

• Julie Molina:

She is omnisexual with a preference for boys, and she uses She/Her pronouns.

Her family didn't actually care, neither Flynn or the boys. Only her tía actually had a little problem with that but the love she proves for her niece is way bigger than her prejudices (she's now a huge lgbtqa+ ally, she also brought Julie to buy a pride flag).

• Flynn:

She uses She/They pronouns and she's aromantic pansexual.

She found out that she was attracted to everyone when a trans girl came out and she fell in love with her at first sight. But she never really liked being in a relationship, even when she and that girl started dating. Sadly that girl moved to another State.

• Willie:

They uses They/Them pronouns, but they're actually afraid to say it so they let people use he/him with them (only Alex does know, and uses the right pronouns). Something they aren't afraid to say is their sexuality: gay (as hell, they say).

Well, a secretly secret is that he kinda had a little crush on Caleb, more like a celebrity crush. But then came Alex and they fell harder than they ever thought.

• Nick:

Nick is transgender ftm so he uses He/Him and he's AroAce.

He kinda like girls/boys but would never to be in any kind of love relationship. He actually discovered this during his “relationship” with Carrie. He never really liked her that way, he thought she was cool but nothing more, nothing less. And then Julie came. But still, it was more admiration than anything.

Also her band mates? Hot, but still. He thought he had a malfunction in his being, but Carrie told him 'bout Asexuality and Aromantic so he found his way to the world.

• Carry Wilson:

She is genderfluid (so They/She/He) and she's Lesbian because girls are too hot (as she says).

Their first real crush was Flynn but she had an affair with that trans girl and so she gave up. Then came Nick.

With Nick was never a “Real Relationship”, it was more a friendship with holding-hands everywhere. And when that new girl in school came, man, she fell head over heels.

• Bobby Shaw:

He uses He/They pronouns and he's Bisexual.

He had a big crush on Luke but he never tried with him because of his fear of rejection. But when Alex introduced Reggie to the band, Bobby flirted with him every single time they could.

• Trevor Wilson:

He uses He/Him pronouns and he's a straight homophobic old man.

After his band mates died, he changed everything and his manager told him that “Faggot don't go far in the music industry”.

And than he became the shit he is.

“Um, no, it’s Luke.” The guitarist pushes back the sweatshirt hood and offers the most halfhearted jazz hands that Alex has ever seen. But if he’s joking, then maybe he feels halfway okay.

“Well Jesus, Luke, or anyone else: why are you out here asking LAPD to come give you a chalk outline?”

I think I'm going to have to with a whole exchange, not just a line, bc I'm really proud of the tension in this scene:

Alex rolls his eyes and leans over to Luke to stage whisper, “This is why we didn’t invite him.”

Bobby recoils like he’s been stabbed in the heart. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

Luke snorts, and the sound drives the knife in deeper. “If we wanted an overbearing mom, bro, we would have stayed with ours.”

Bobby feels tears spring into his eyes, but he blinks them back because Bobby Shaw does not cry.

“Then why don’t you go back to her?” he growls. It’s a low blow and he knows it, but he doesn’t give himself time to register the shock on Luke’s face before he turns on his heel and stalks towards the door.

“Bobby—“ Luke calls.

“Fuck you, Luke.” Bobby stops in the doorway to face him. “Both of you, actually. Just— fuck you.”

9. Were there any alternate versions of this fic!

There was! I never wrote any of it down, but the original plan was much fluffier and more trans-related. Bobby was going to do stuff for the boys like reminding them to take their binders off and holding their hands during T shots and comforting them on bad days, and then eventually the boys realize by themselves how much Bobby does for them, so they do something nice to thank him. I might still write that version, but when I went to actually write the fic I was bitter and upset with some of my friends and I was like "You know what? I only rarely get thanked for all the dad-friending I do and I'm gonna take that out on Bobby." I think the result was a much better and more impactful fic. It was definitely more therapeutic for me.

X-Men Fic Recs

X-Men fandom is mildly to moderately cursed but here’s some good fic. Mostly movie-verse, mostly Charles/Erik because of like, who I am as a person. My favorites are marked with an asterisk. I’ve tried to add warnings for untagged stuff that might be upsetting, but I make no guarantees. (Also reccing a fic is not an endorsement of the author.)

Canon Compliant [Through The Last Stand or XM:A]

*The Building of the House by kvikindi (Peter & Erik): A take on Peter and Erik’s relationship while they rebuild the mansion post-Apocalypse. If you read one fic from this fandom, it should be this one. It’s absurd and exuberant the way any Peter fic should be, but it’s also delicate and and deeply engaged with the intergenerational trauma sunken into the bones of this family. Just, god. Probably the best cultural trauma fic for any fandom I’ve ever read. (Reading on mobile is highly recommended because of formatting.) 

*Tehillim by kvikindi (Erik-centric): Post-Apocalypse. Erik wanders around Haifa in a dissociative state, thinks on his past, and calls Charles. Sequel to The Building of the House, though it can stand alone. Luminous and beautiful and every word painful to the touch. 

the sea, the sea, by disenchanted (Charles/Erik): If you know disenchanted’s other work, you’ll know this is lovely--a dizzyingly romantic portrait of their love during First Class, even as they feel the edges of it falling apart

To Breathe Again (Impossibilities Remix) by Unforgotten (Charles/Erik): Erik returning as the world collapses in the wake of The Last Stand. I’m just a sucker for longing!!

nuclear winter by honey_wheeler (Charles/Erik): Erik watches Charles get a lapdance on the eve of Cuba and it is stunningly sad, clicking home with all inevitability. 

*Fear the Rest by Penknife (Charles/Erik, O5 ensemble): The decades leading up to being who they are in X1. Really, really strong sense of politics and place in time. Excellent, complex Erik interactions with the students. Additional warnings for serophobia. 

Anthem for Doomed Youth by Fahye (Mystique & Charles): Mystique before and during the events of First Class. Good relationship work and exploration of how their powers have shaped them. 

Canon Divergence 

*Fathers and Sons by M_Leigh (Peter & Erik): Post-DOFP, Erik realizes Peter is his kid and comes by the mansion to tell him, it goes about as well as you’d think. Line for line probably the funniest fic in this fandom, and has an vicious view of Charles that is my favorite. 

*Synthesis (Scenes from an AU) by Starlady (Charles/Erik): Snapshots from a universe where Erik came back after Cuba to help run the school. Unlike most of this kind of fic though, everyone is still political and contentious and awful as they need to be. Also, has an extremely good Jean Grey. 

the end of the world (just not ours) [INCOMPLETE] by hiyashi (Erik-centric): Where Erik does a lot of drugs instead of embracing his rage. I cannot explain in the least why I’m so into this characterization of Erik in this unfinished crackfic, but I super am.

Third Law of Motion by arcapelago: Magneto lives at the school but the students are determined to keep him away from Charles. This one is just really funny, idk. 

tel aviv series by mnabakov (Charles/Erik): AU where they met on a beach in Israel after all. Very atmospheric, languid fics. Warnings for untagged Holocaust mentions and internalized homophobia stuff. 

The Way Things Break by GrayJay (Alex and Scott): God I love good sibling fic. This is an attempt to reconcile Summers family comics backstory with the Alex of the XMCU and it comes out really well. Everyone feels extremely dimensional in their trauma, and this Scott is a darling. 

defined by my logic by lloydsglasses (Jean-centric): Sketches from the life of trans girl Jean Grey. Very sweet. 

sparkle and fade by sabinelagrande (Charles/Erik): Phew. One where Erik stays after Cuba but they fall apart anyway. Pretty much unmitigated tragedy. 

Complete AUs

*Limited Release by rageprufrock (Charles/Erik, Alex, First Class Ensemble): Modern still-powered AU where Erik and Raven are FBI agents, Charles is a controversial professor, and Alex is on parole because his brother has been kidnapped by Shaw. Exceedingly well-constructed and well-plotted. Everything is fraught and also hilarious. 

Knowledge Management by phalangine (Charles/Erik): A still-powered modern AU where Erik is a scary librarian and Charles is an amused patron, though it quickly extends much broader than that. Languid and complicated, with especially good Charles characterization. Most importantly, it’s got that good good disability content. 

*”Lessons” ‘Verse by Red (Charles/Erik): Still-powered modern AU where Charles and Erik are both super traumatized and little shits and they have Issues while they do a bunch of kinky shit. One of the rare extremely good portrayals of disabled Charles. 

If You Liked the Book, You’ll Hate the Movie by paperclipbitch (First Class ensemble): Nonpowered high school AU. Irritating that it doesn’t have disabled Charles because otherwise the characterization is great. Raven Had A Weird Childhood and has a drunk brother. Erik is a guidance counselor who has definitely killed a man. Everyone is the worst. 

Shovel Talks and Other Hazards by Unforgotten (Charles/Erik): I can’t believe this ship has 12k fics on AO3 but there’s only one good fake dating fic and this is it!! Erik is Charles’ hot neighbor that he asks to be his pretend date for Raven’s wedding, you know how it goes. Warning for an untagged CSA mention. 

*i guess i should say thanks or some shit by orphan_account (Charles/Erik): The world’s best characterization of college AU-ish Cherik: drunk, depressed douchebags with questionable morals. In Amsterdam. 

New Beautiful Things Come by raven (Charles/Erik, First Class ensemble): Modern still-powered AU where Charles is a professor and Erik runs a kosher bakery and they have a contentious romance. Notable for being one of the few AUs where it feels like queerness and mutantdom have real political weight, even if that’s not the focus. 

*Six Lessons in Living in Sin by Penknife (Charles/Erik): Canon era-ish AU where they move in together and it’s difficult. Quiet, atmospheric, sad with a deep love between them. Warnings for Holocaust mentions. 

Condonare by etirabys (Charles/Erik/Hannibal Lecter): Uh well it’s a fic where young Nazi hunters Erik and Hannibal shack up with uni student Charles. *buries face in hands* It’s really good. Warnings for violence and internalized homphobia. 

after all the breath and dirt by magneticwave (Charles/Erik, First Class Ensemble): Both dynamically fun and deeply sad characterization, all in an Inception AU where Erik haunts Charles. Nondisabled Charles. 

Non-Movie

*Scott’s Life is Hard series by yellow_caballero (X-kids ensemble; Scott; Kitty, Peter; Emma): Sometimes a family is like thirty mutant youth wannabe superheroes, all screaming, in one mansion. Also Magneto is there. Based in part on Evolution, the high school AU cartoon, but is still highly enjoyable without knowledge of that canon. Ditto for the New Mutants/X-Force stuff. The third fic in this series has an exceptional Emma Frost voice. 

Camp Xavier by captainpeggy (Kitty, Bobby, gigantic-ass ensemble): Charles and Erik run rival mutant summer camps and Kitty is going to make this her year. 

*That Would Be Enough by Wish_I_Had_A_Tail (Kitty & Erik): Modern AU where Kitty spends Passover with Magneto. Kitty just feels like SUCH a clever, overthinky teen and I love this relationship. 

That Which We Are by GrayJay (Scott-Centric): Deeply sad comics-compliant trans Scott Summers. Really really good fucked up medical stuff. (Also read all of GrayJay’s Scott fic. It’s that good.) 

Five Times Someone Questioned the Brilliance and Resolve of the Writer, Director, and Producer of the Annual Theatrical Production of the Xavier School for Gifted Individuals bystoriesfortravellers (Jean, X-kids ensemble): Tiny crackfic about iron fisted theater director Jean. There’s a line in there that absolutely murders me. 

The World Outside Was Hungry by tzigane, Zaganthi (Caffiends) (Charles/Erik): Still-powered comics AU where they meet at Columbia as students and slowly build a life together. This Erik’s sense of the world feels so appropriately odd and lovely. Warnings for Holocaust imagery and homophobia. 

Five Sleeping Arrangements by seriousfic (Scott/Emma/Jean): Scott and Jean drag Emma into having a semi-functional relationship. Everyone is a terrible delight, particularly Emma.
