what if the Revolutionary Girl Utena characters were pokemon trainers

I went back to the Utena tab, as one does, to brush up on my philosophy... Suddenly the question pops into my head "With Anthy's love of roses which flower pokemon would be her favorite? I bet it would be x." Then i started to think "If Anthy had "X" then maybe Utena could have "Y". "Nanami should have "C" because of that one comedy filler episode" You know the one. "Also wouldn't it be fun to create a sinister pokemon team for Akio." I literally went to sleep rolling these thoughts and potential teams around in my mind, and have spent all day working on getting the teams right.

Before I post my teams here were my rules

1.) Six pokemon for the rose crest duelists, one-three for the black rose duelists. Ruka got two

2.) All the rose bride duelists had to have at least one flower/plant/florial pokemon. This was not required of the black rose duelists or Ruka.

3.) Normally I do not let characters have legendary pokemon on their teams. But because some of these characters are Gods or embodiment's of legendary themes/tropes I put fitting legendary on the teams for four specific characters

4.) Utena was the only character I allowed a pokemon that can mega evolve. She is the one chosen to wield the power of Dios in the duels.

5.) To challenge myself I did not use any of the eeveelutions, or regional type variations (Alolan, Galar, Hisuin). These are usally heavily represented on my previous lists and I wanted this one to be more unique

In honor of pride month here is the RGU cast as pokemon trainers

Anthy Himemyia

a team that is half cute and girly , and half very very frightening

White Flower Florgus: This one is representative of Anthy's love of flowers, whoch she incorperated into her role in the duels, as the Rose Bride. A flowery fairy pokemon that devotes itself to its gardens. The red one is to sweet to be Anthy's pokemon. Plus given that both the roses in her coffin and the one she puts on Utena are white, I think that white may be her favorite rose color.

Wooloo: Anthy used the Wool from her Wooloo (and some red fabric dye) to make the sweater she knitted and gifted Utena in season 2. I love that because there are no hints that Akio told Anthy to make Utena the sweater. Anthy chose to make a handmade gift for her friend. Utena wore it multiple times later when she and Anthy were hanging out in their room. That was a really sweet gift, and symbolic of how much the two were coming to care about each other, so I wanted to give Anthy a pokemon representative of that

Apom and Rattata: These two both represent Chu-chu, a monkey that was the size of a mouse. They can also represent aspects of Anthy's way of expressing herself during the games. How she was always handy at chores, but had what one would call a quiet and mousy nature. Apom is a shiny pink to match Utena's trademark hair, and the pink outfit Anthy dawns (leaving behind her red goddess/rose bride outfits) to go out into the world and search for Utena.

Mismagius: A ghost type pokemon that is representative of Anthy's witch persona. It's poxides entry says that it is a havic bringer that can cause people great hapiness or misery, and that some will pursue it as if their life depended on it, though owning it can sometimes have less than favorable results. A very Himemyia pokemon

Spectrier: Representative of Anthy's, now long dead, goddess persona. This beauitful, dark, spirit horse shy's away from sight and rely's on its other senses. It is also said that it can seperate a soul from a body with one kick (Similar to what Anthy did to Dios when she gave up being a goddess). Spectrier shares a connection to pokemon owned by both Akio and Utena

Akio Ohtori

Note it was actually a lot of fun making this cutesy/sinister team for Akio.

Morella: This could be Akio's floral pokemon if you view "End of the World" as a rose duelist. I mostly picked it because it is cute and whimsical looking, but is parasitic and will drain a person of their energy when they are asleep.

Driftloom: Another whimsical pokemon. What a fun and safe looking little balloon... that leads small children astray and can cause them to go missing.

Delibird: It is his messenger. Before the final arc he mostly communicated with his students by letters. Delibird delivers them. Bad bird, bad

Palossand: Representative of Ohtori Academy. A palace and a kingdom where everyone lives trapped, with Akio as the prince who is in charage of everyone

Dusktops: A hollow husk ghost that it is unwise to get close enough to look inside of. Am I talking about Dusktops or Akio?

Glastrier: Akio's Princely white horse. A wild and crazy steed (kinda like his car), counter part to his sisters Spectrier, and also connecting to one of Utena's pokemon.

Utena Tenjou

What pokemon are enough of hero's for our protagonist. Are flashy hero pokemon really the ones she needs?

Roserade: Utena's Floral pokemon, and her mega evolution pokemon. I like to think it started out as a little Bedew that was left for Utena after that day all those years ago when she met the prince and vowed to become one herself. Roserade is not really a princely pokemon, but Utena never actually became a prince. I think Roserade is a good representation of the revolutionary character she did become.

Spritzee: Scent seems to be an important senese to Utena. She will comment on food smells and the one thing she remembers clearly about that day is that she could smell Roses. Given her love of fragrance she would probably also love a perfume pokemon

Marowak: Utena and Marowak both lost loving parents when young. Now they have grown tough and made the decision to help each other and carry on.

Growlithe: Representation of Utena's courage and fierce loyalty to those she cares about

Corvisquire: this one represents both the dark uniform and the ingenuity Utena shows. How she descends on the games, has less experience then the other duelist, but she uses tools around her, and eventually the traits she can glimpse from the other duelist themselves, to win.

Calyrex: This is Utena's Legendary pokemon. It is connected to both Anthy and Akio's legendary pokemon, how they both need her, and the choice Utena ultimately has to make on which one she wants to be with.

Touga Kiryuu

Touga' team is meant to be bad/dangerous but not necissarly as wicked or frightening as Akio's team

Vileplume: Touga's floral pokemon. I gave him a finale form in a 3 part evolution, similar to Utena's roserade, but of course not containing the same abilities or as powerful. I also really wanted him to have a flower that was also a poison type, because he himself is pretty poisonous.

Hitmonchan: Touga is shown to know how to box when he took out that kangeroo. So i figured since he would obviously have a fighting type pokemon, let's go with the boxing one

Purugly: He loves cats so he gets a cat pokemon. (Side note do we think he got to keep the kitten Anthy gave him for his birthday, or did it disappear after 24-48 hours, like the "gifts" Anthy sends Nanami). I decided to give him Purugly do them both having nice hair, being fairly rude, and most importantly, loving to sleep in someone else's bed.

Seviper: A snake is pokemon is another one that just fits Touga. Add that Seviper has a red sword like tail, and could maybe help Touga train, makes it Touga's perfect snake.

Yamask: Yamask's lore says it use to be a man who died. It came back as a ghost pokemon and it carries a mask that resembles the face it had as a human. I put it on Touga's team to go with Touga's own lore, and how there is all this discussion on if Touga is actually a boy or a ghost... Even if he is still alive he is kinda still a ghost, carrying a mask of the kid Saionji and Nanami remember.

Mudsdale: Touga has a horse because he wants to imitate Akio. But where as Akio's Galstrier is a beautiful and princely legindary pokemon. Touga only has a dirty mudsdale, a.k.a the one horse pokemon that is entirely based off of a regular, non magical, horse. Mudsdale can never be quite like Galstier. And Touga (thankfully) can never manage to be as manipulative and powerful as Akio.

Nanami Kiryuu

Her magistey the princess of ridiculousness, with her loyal court of fools

Carnavine: Nanami's floral pokemon. I did not want to give Nanami a more "delicate flower" looking pokemon, as Nanami is honestly one of the least delicate girls in the anime. Carnavine, like Nanami, is clingy and snappy so I think it fits her really well.

Vespaqueen: Becasue she is the school's "Queen Bee"

Morgrem: It is a prankster, who will sometimes employ false surrenders and dirty tactics, all of which are to hide its own insecurites and lack of self confidence. Nanami and Morgrem are kindred spirits in this regard. Hopefully she and it could help each other grow to accept themselves

Piplup: It has a tough attitude and a lot of bravado, but in truth it is pretty clumsy and falls down a lot. So piplup is another pokemon who I feel like it and Nanami would get each other.

Miltank and Exeggcute: You all know exactly why Nanami has a cow and eggs. No explanation needed.

Kyouichi Saionji

It was not my intention to give him the fluffiest team. I am laughing at it turning out that way though. Let's hope Saionji can keep himself and his teammates stocked on hair brushes

Cacturn: Saionji's Floral pokemon. He gets Cacturn because they are both green and prickly.

Fennekin: Well it is a hot headed pokemon that will have steam coming out of its fluffy ears when it gets really worked up. That certainly sounds like someone Saionji see's whenever he looks in the mirror. Also once it evolves, and starts carrying around sticks, he could teach it Kendo style staff techniques

Mankey: Saionji also needed a fighting type. I chose Mankey to represent just how Impulsive Saionji is. Both he and Mankey struggle to calm themselves down, and to stop fighting. If Saionji can ever manage to teach Mankey any control, then maybe he won't be completely hopeless himself. If not, it will at least be a funny ride.

Zangoose: Saionji got a Zangoose because Touga has a Seviper. Each of them have a rival pokemon that is always fighting with the other, but also can never help but seek the other out. I would say that is pretty accurate representation of Touga and Saionji's relationship, and how they feel about each other in their adolescences.

Farfetch: I was thinking because it carries the leak then maybe Saionji could teach it Kendo staff techniques now. Fennekin could watch. They would probably all enjoy that.

Shiny Sudowoodo: well it is bad at hiding and hates water, that is similar to Saionji. But really I gave it to Saionji because he likes poetry, and Sudowoodo (particularly its shiny form) are about the closest I could think of to a poetic looking pokemon. Another thing is that Shiny Sudowoodo looks like a tree in the fall, when things change. Change is a concept Saionji struggles with, and he needs to learn to better deal with it if he wants to leave his coffin

Miki Kaoru

I kind of wish his team could have been bluer, but I am happy that 2 are garden creatures and another three look a bit like childhood toys. Nature and nostalgia are strong themes if Miki's

Sunflora: This is Miki's floral pokemon. He gets an actual flower based one. A sunflower caught in the Sunlight garden back when he was a child

Baltoy: So Miki is a time keeper for the student council (supposedly, as no one knows what he is keeping time on with his stop watch) and carries a lot of nostalgia for his past. So I had to give him a "time" pokemon. However he is not a strong enough trainer to command a legendary, like Celibi or Dialga. Baltoy was the only one left, but it honestly works. I like to imagine that it stays next to Miki at student council meetings and every time he presses the button on his oh-so-confusing stopwatch Baltoy will cease its spinning and speak.

Chimeco and chatot: Two music based pokemon to sit with Miki and keep him company at the piano. Chimeco will try to calm him down when he gets stressed. Chatot will repeat things: notes or phrases that it has heard Miki/his teachers say. Miki loves Chatot, but it often makes him more stressed.

Scyther: All of Miki's pokemon so far have been small and cute. But Miki is a tough fighter too. I wanted him to have pokemon he could sword train with, and that would come off as more imposing in battle. No fighting types really fit him so I got more creative. Scyther would make a pretty good fencing partner. He probably caught it in his garden like Sunflora, only he was older by then.

Male Meowstic: This one is representative of his caring yet strained relationship his sister Kozue-she has a female. Miki's male meowstic is both the male, and the more defensive of the pair, just like him.

Juri Arisugawa

before anyone asks Juri does not have a sward pokemon because she does not need one. She already has a sword.

Lurantis: Now this is the perfect floral pokemon for Juri. It is girly without being soft or frilly. It is vivid, tough, and glamours. It is also super sharp and does its best to fool people into seeing it as someone its not. Basically it suits Juri's strengths, while also highlighting some of her vulnerabilities.

Luvdisc: Okay the romantic heart pokemon that is considered a symbol of love might seem like a strange one for Juri,given how she feels about, well, romantic feelings and all that. One I do think Juri is a romantic, but, just like with miracles, she has some trouble believing in romance after what went down with Shori. Secondly lone luvdisc's can become despondent and disheartened... which again is kind of how Juri feels, when thinking about all the things she is scared to believe in. Both Juri and Luvdisc need hugs

Cloyster: This one represents how closed off and self motivated Juri has become

Brozong: It strong steel/psychic typing suits Juri pretty well, and it being a 360 degree shield does show how defensive Juri is now. Most importantly it can summon rain showers. The culmination of Juri's arc was her locket getting broken, her forfeiting her duel as she finally lets herself cry over what she lost, then stepping into a rain shower, to try and began herself again. That was such a powerful scene for Juri, so I gave her a powerful pokemon to represent that time in her life.

Jangmo-o: Here is a little dragon that personality wise is on almost the same wave length as Juri. Both are diligent trainers, humble, yet have the pride of warriors. I could see these two taking each other far.

Mienshao: This is Juri's fighting type pokemon. One that is very graceful and elegant, as well as being a skilled, and sometimes overwhelming, fighter. Like with her Lurantis I could see this one joining her in both a battle and on the runway.

Now on to the black rose duelists. Once again they were smaller characters so I am only giving them 1-3 pokemon.

Kanae Ohtori

Apples for the princess, fairy tales dictate she should have refused

Applin: So they are sometimes viewed as romantic gifts between people in a committed relationship. Akio gave this Applin to Kanae, who joyfully accepted it as a "symbol of their love". But another way to look at it was Akio telling Kanae his plans. Applin is a worm that burrows into the center of an apple and then feeds on the fruit to stay protected, plump, and strong. Akio is the worm. Kanae's family's academy is the apple. Kanae's Applin is most definitely not evolving into a Appletun.

Kozue Kaoru

I imagine Kozue and her girls are out to either get their party up or throw some shade down. No in between

Female Meowstic: the sibling pokemon to Miki's male one. Like Kozue this meowstic is the aggressive female counter part to its more defensive brother.

Bellossom: Kozue is not a rose crest duelist, but she still has a flower pokemon? Okay I am not saying Kozue should have joined the student council with Miki, or competed for the rose bride, or anything like that. Bellossom is also a party pokemon. It is always dancing and chatting away with others. Kozue takes Bellossom with her when she goes out to look for new boyfriends. It is also there for her after hook-ups, when she is all alone again. Bellossom might be Miki's favorite of Kozue's pokemon. Kozue likes Miki's chatoc, because she can teach it to say phrases that annoy her brother/ scare away anyone that might hurt him.

Taillow: This is Kozue's newest pokemon. She is shown to like birds. She found this one injured, became protective of it, and took it in. She told everyone she caught it because the injuries proved it was tough in a scrap, and it is tough in a scrap, but that was still a lie on Kozue's part.

Shori Takatsuki:

So cute on the surface, beneath that... well sometimes it is a little less pretty and a lot more messy

Psyduck: Because Shori follows people she likes/wants around like a duck, and she is driven to headaches by her own refusal to accept feelings. Both her own feelings and other peoples as well. It will be a long and stressful ride, but caring for Pysduck could possibly help Shori break this negative cycle of denial she has locked herself in.

Corsola: The tips of it spikes can be painlessly broken off and then made into pretty jewelry, that are prized as treasures. Shori deeply wants to be someones treasure, so I imagine she wears corsola jewelry a lot to try and boost her low self esteem. This also goes with Juri's luvdisc, as luvdiscs are a pokemon that love corsolas.

Phanpy: This is Shori's last pokemon, and probably her oldest. She is not able to/has no desire to evolve it. Phanpy's look like innocent little dolls, are very playful, and has a tendency to hurt those it feels affection for...Just like Shori.

Mitsuru Tsuwabuki

Gorwing up is really so tough

Impidimp: One evolution behind Nanami's Morgrim. Like their trainers the pair get along and are good friends, but often tend to prank the other. It is a bit of a ongoing challenge to see which is the most sly and devious

Bagon: Like Mitsuru with adulthood, Bagon dreams of the day it will be a full grown Salamence, and waits for all the things it will be able to do then. Mitsuru and Bagon want to grow, evolve, and achieve their dreams together.

Love Sweet Carmel Swirl Alcreamie: I gave Mitsuru an Alicreamie because he shown to be able to cook/bake, and likes to do it for Nanami. I really was hoping that their was a chocolate version of Alicreamie, because of the symbolism of the partially eaten chocolate bar his friend leaves behind in his black rose episode. But I was out of luck. I decided to give him a Carmel Swirl Alcreamie because its cream has a bitter taste. Right now Mitsuru is at a stage where he feels very bitter about still being a little kid. I figure his Alcreamie can help him learn to mix that bitterness with other feelings/flavors to create good results. Love Sweet because Mitsuru is a romantic of course.

Tatsuya Kazami

I hope that he got back out of ohtori again quick, and that this time he and Wakaba stayed in touch....maybe as friends, maybe as more. In the end that is up tot he two of them, not to Mikage, Utena, or Akio.

Oddish: Oddish is a pokemon that kinda looks like a onion, at least that is what Tatsuya thought when he met Oddish. It reminded him of Wakaba and how she used to call him "The Onion Prince" , so he caught it and made it his partner.

Slowpoke: Slowpoke is called the patient pokemon, and Tatsuya's best and only quality is that he is willing to patiently support the girl he loves, while waiting for the day she maybe decides to give them a chance to be something more.

Wakaba Shinohara

You take care of everyone you meet. But who will take care of you?

Swablu: A very friendly and fearless, normal/flying type, bird that goes around with its head is the clouds and cotton covering its ears. That is definitely similar to our girl Wakaba. But it will also grow into a very strong dragon/flying type, Altaria; just like how Wakaba shows she will grow into a very strong young women one day. For now Wakuba and Swablu have got each other, and are committed to helping the other grow.

Chancy: A caring and nutruing pokemon. This one helps Wakaba take immaculate care of everyone in her life. It also tries its best to take care of her and reminder her that she is still important to it during her darker moments. Like when Saionji leaves her. Or Utena starts spending most of her time with Anthy/Akio and has less and less for Wakaba.

Shiny Skeledirge: Like Wakaba this pokemon is caring yet meddlesome. I could see them getting up to a lot of trouble that they had no business being in, but also helping a lot of people too. It likes to help wakaba with her chorus homework, and sing for Wakaba when she is feeling down. Hopefully it's powerful enough to at least intimidate the boys Wakaba does not have the sense to know are bad news. I also gave it to her because wiki says it is modeled after a tennis athlete (Tennis is implied to be Wakaba's favorite sport), and that the bird on its snout functions as a separate entity. So it was a sneaky way to actually give Wakaba four pokemon. Why is it a shiny, because Wakaba deserves a rare shiny pokemon. She was a rare bright spot in that hell school after all.

Keiko Sondo

I got the idea to give her all bug pokemon because her episode is called Vermon.

Meadow Pattern (a.k.a Pink) Vivillon: I picked Vivillon because it is very girly and frilly, and Keiko comes off as a being a really girly girl. I picked the meadow pattern because it seemed the most romantic, and at heart this girl is another huge romantic.

Male Combee: This one is her relationship to Nanami. Nanami had a female Combee that evolved into a Vespadqueen. But male Combee like Keiko's cannot evolve. No matter how hard either Combee or Keiko work and train they are not royalty, but mere parts of the hive. Combee shares Keiko's resentment that random chances of birth seemingly made Nanami and Vespaqueen more special than them. It is just not fair.

Grubbin: Yeah here is a not so pretty, underground, grubby buggy. But there is so much more to Grubbin than appears. They are attracted to sparks of electricity and will burrow to and stay by it, until he day they can evolve and generate their own. Also when worked into a enough of a rage they are capable of causing birds that try to prey on them fly away in fear. So I am giving her Grubbin to show that of all three conies, Nanami was not able to break Keiko as totally as she did the other two, and their were moments in the show where Keiko was able to stand up to/take on Nanami.

Souji Mikage

Yes I am calling Mikage the fourth most powerful character character in RGU. He was definitely a victor in some previous round of the duels, and for whatever reason Akio and Anthy kept their hold on him for 30 years... to use him to test future victors that won the first round to easy? I mean it is stated he used to have 100 back rose crests and flowers, but by Utena's time he only had 6 left... Off topic

Hypno: it helps him mess with the kids who come into his elevator for therapy; using its hypnotic power to pull their most jealous and anxious thoughts form their minds and mouths.

Bisharp: This one represents how professor Nemuro saw himself before meeting Mamiya and Tokiko, and what he, as Souji Mikage, became after their loss. This is a dark and steel type robot, that commands subordinates to fight underneath it, while it pushes towards its own goals.

Celibi: He slips backwards and forwards through time, while always remaing the exact same age. So I gave him Celibi because it can take itself and invited companions through time. Once he learns that there was really no way then or in the future to have saved Mamiya, can Celibi please take him back in time to tell the real Mamiya "Good bye"?

Ruka Tsuchiya

And here is the guy who in the two episodes he was in before dying, he seemingly made himself more hated than Saionji and Touga combinded, almost as hated as Akio.

Haunter: Because haunting was a thing he liked to do before dying, and from what I have heard, possibly afterwards too. It is also possible Haunter stayed with Ruka even after his death. Admirable loyalty on his pokemons part

Hawkamo: A dragon one evolution higher than Juri's Jaogmo-o, because Ruka was always one step ahead of Juri. After he dies I imagine Hawkamo stalks around the fencing dojo, trying to pick a new trainer. It would be interesting to guess who it would pick.

a/n: watch me change my mind about this as soon as reload drops, as i realize i now have different headcanons about my girl :')

mitsuru does care a lot about you, even if it isn't always apparent

to her, it might seem like she's being affectionate towards you and direct about her feelings, but she just shows those things differently!

mitsuru cares about you, which is why she wants you to be the best version of yourself!

and that means she'll make you train and study almost twice as much as the other SEES members!

but at times, it feels more like she's your tutor or trainer, than it feels like she's your girlfriend

mitsuru isn't necessarily a stranger to relationships, but the ones she had before had always been rather… lifeless!

affection isn't something she's used to, which is why she struggles to be affection with you as well!

but that doesn't mean she doesn't love you!

mitsuru takes her relationship with you very seriously and she tries to slowly open up and change, to be the best girlfriend she can be

it might just take her a bit until she realizes that she can't be a perfect girlfriend and that she has to loosen up and make mistakes sometimes…

Adachi would be a dark (or bug type) user

Narukami would have normal type pokemon

Yosuke would have a multi type team ( frog theme)

Yukiko would be fire type

Chie fighting type

Naoto ice type

Kanji everyone thought would be electric type but surprisingly he has both fairy types and pink pokemon ( Kanji; what?! I look cute things do what!?)

Dojima would have rock type

Nanako would have the whole eeveelutions as her team

And teddie would have bear pokemon

I think it's so funny that you bring that up because I did a what-if persona users were pokemon trainer list years ago (before Scarlet and Violet even came out). I did the entire Arena Ultimax roster + Fuuka. It doesn't contain Dojima or Nanako because they are not persona users. Perhaps they could have something like a Bidoof as a pet, tho. Also, Kanji's cute pokémon is a pikachu that he evolved into a Raichu because he was bullied by the big competition trainer for wanting to be like Ash and not evolve it. My headcanon is that a lot of cuter pokemon are scared of him/don't want to be near him, and he attracts uglier pokemon, Raichu being his only cute one.

All the pokemon chosen are based on the characters' personality, persona, fighting style, and story/character arc. (You'll see that Junpei's team is a bit strange, but there's a good reason for a lot of those pokémon.) I did this list when I was extra fan of persona too, so I can't make a better one:

Get Ready! Here I Come! A Wally Analysis

Oh Wally, one of my favorite rivals and Hoenn Characters! He's definitely one of the many characters from Hoenn that was definitely benefited by the ORAS storyline adding much needed character development and screen time.

Wally as a character broke a lot of molds for his introduction in gen 3. He's the first rival to not be the first battle or get one of the main starters! He's also the first rival to be a secondary rival (as Brendan/May are the first) but ultimately become the primary rival as Brendan/May pretty much give up on keeping up with the player by Lilycove.

Let's start with Wally's name, in English Wally is derived from "Wallflower" which is a term for people who may come off as either shy, awkward and/or introverted. In Japanese, his name is Mitsuru which can mean "to be frail" or a reference to the crane ("tsuru") which would then reference the thousand origami cranes that are often given to people who are seriously ill. Indeed a lot of the names he has across localizations seem to reference his him either being shy or frail.

Which makes sense given that when we first meet him he's is quite sickly and rather shy (the shyness is much more prominent in his animations in ORAS). Based on what we know about his condition (needing more fresh air and it improving as he was able to travel more) it's likely he had asthma, which can indeed improve as you grow older (provided it doesn't come back, like mine did). Wally's introduction being the catching tutorial is probably one of the best of the series simply because it involves the growth of a new character instead of just it showing the player (who most likely already knows how to catch Pokemon). It's really nice to see Wally so excited about catching his first Pokemon. This is magnified by the fact that when you look at his room it's filled with a lot of textbooks on how to catch Pokemon, showing this was a major dream for Wally for the longest time and now he's finally getting a chance to fulfill said dream. Wally's introduction is probably my favorite of any rival we've had in the series just because of how sweet it is and how creative they were by using his introduction as a tutorial.

Now let's step back for a second and look at Wally's team. His signature Pokemon is the Ralts line with him evolving the Ralts he caught in the capture tutorial into a Gardevoir in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and Gallade in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Both Gardevoir and Gallade evoke guardian angel and knight vibes with their Pokedex entries and appearances. You would think this would mean that Wally is a guardian/protector…but really this involves Wally being the one needing protecting. Obviously as the trainer Wally does take care of his Pokemon, but given his sickness he relies on his Pokemon. IN the first match we have against him in Mauville City, his Ralts has Teleport, which is a great move to quickly get you back to the last Pokemon center. Perfect for someone who might get sick and need to leave an area immediately

It's really cool to see this play out with a major NPC as most oftentimes in the game we don't really seeing humans actively needing help from Pokemon unless they are minor NPCs

But then let's look at the rest of his team when he fights you at Victory Road. It consists of a Delcatty, Magneton, Roselia, Altaria and the Gallade(ORAS)/Gardevoir(RSE). What's interesting to note is that outside of his starter most of his Pokemon's base forms can be found near Verdanturf. Skitty can be found Route 116 (on the other side of Rusturf Tunnel which connects Rustboro and Verdanturf). Roselia is found on Route 117 (connecting Verdanturf to Mauville City. Magnemite can be found in New Mauville but also in horde battles on Hoenn Route 110 (which is just underneath Cycling Road which is near Mauville). Swablu is the mon that's found farthest away on Routes 114/115 which are close to Meteor Falls (easier to get to via Fallarbor Town but you can go up through Rustboro City).

This is interesting to note because it gives the impression that Wally stayed closed to his Uncle's House in Verdanturf when initially catching and training Pokemon. Presumably this is so one he can boost up his confidence and two to help build his stamina as the air there is a little cleaner and would help improve his respiratory condition. This is something I really like about Wally in the fact that he has far more humble beginnings compared to many rivals who often get traditional starters and come from rather privileged families. I feel like he's more emblematic of what the average trainer would go through normally in the Pokemon world, which makes his true strength later on that much more impressive.

Now we don't see Wally much in our Gen 3 playthroughs and some players express frustration about that because we're used to having rivals challenge us on a more constant basis. But actually makes sense given this line of dialogue

"I lost to you, , but I'm not feeling down anymore. Because I have a new purpose in life. Together with my Ralts, I'm going to challenge Pokémon Gyms and become a great Trainer. Please watch me, . I'm going to be stronger than you. When I do, I'm going to challenge you to another battle." -At his Aunt and Uncle's house in Verdanturf

He expresses the desire to challenge you again, but he wants to build up strength before hand. Again subverting the rivals before him (even Brendan/May in the same game until Lilycove where they give up) he doesn't see himself as better/more experienced. So his loss doesn't affect him the same way. He knows he has a ways to go and decides he wants to focus on building himself up before challenging you again. And going back to his team composition he really wants to be sure he's prepared so he sticks to a small region of traveling before branching out. Which no doubt helps him conquer the gyms at a blistering rate. You'll notice around through the game that if you check the gym statues his name actually appears first on gyms. Because like Blue and Silver he ends up outpacing you. In ORAS the News portion of the Pokenav actually comments on a trainer who is conquering the gyms at a blistering pace which we'll later find out is him

"Oh, ! I…I left my uncle's place in Verdanturf without telling anyone. I wonder if he's furious with me… , you understand how I feel, don't you?" <- Wally in Emerald on the Match Call after you beat Flannery

This is a line that stuck out to me even as a kid playing Emerald on GBA SP. He actually snuck out in order to continue training his Pokemon. But he feels bad for doing it because on some level he understands that his family is just trying to look out for his health. But also he still wants to make his dreams come true even if it upsets them. It's also really nice touch in Emerald when he does call you because it shows he really considers you to be a friend even though you guys don't see each other much (one of the many reasons I wish we would've gotten Delta Emerald just to keep the Match Calls because they provide a lot of insight to the Hoenn cast, among other things).

In ORAS at least it seems to be less of a sneak out thing as we do see him in Petalburg after defeating Norman and he does get his dad's encouragement to continue traveling, with both Norman and his dad remarking on our strength as we head on out.

We don't see Wally again until Victory Road where he surprises with a battle and in ORAS giving us one of the best themes of a Pokemon character EVER in my opinion. Since Hoenn was my introduction to the Pokemon main-series games and Wally was really my first true rival of the series hearing the epic music and seeing the visual was amazing. It brought a tear my eye, honestly. Also just seeing how his animation in ORAS changes where our first battle he has a very timid look, but on Victory Road he challenges us with a more confident stance showing how much he has grown. And when he loses he expresses frustration.

We see him again in ORAS in the Delta Episode being harassed by either Courtney or Matt for his Key Stone after he already had his stolen by Zinnia which he'll eventually get back. But when we see him at the Battle Resort we notice something a bit different about him. He seems to be a little bit more impatient, running so fast he knocks the Team Aqua/Magma admins aside. He does apologize to them afterwards, but it's definitely a change from what we've seen of him thus far. And then after defeating him the first time at the Battle Resort we get treated to this line"I knew my team makeup was still off. Then…I guess I need to take this guy out. No, if I do that, I'll be wide open for… Hmm… Then if I replace this move here… Yeah… Yeah, that should do it! Oh! Excuse me! I couldn't help myself! But you're just as brilliant in battle as ever, <player>! Still, don't you count on me just losing to you forever. I've met a lot of people who have helped me grow since coming to the Battle Resort, and it has reminded me all over again how much fun it is to really go all out in battle! Thanks again, <player>! Let's battle again sometime!"

This is a bit concerning. Now to be fair other trainers who swap out Pokemon. He's not the first or the last. But you can kind of tell how serious he's become about trying to win. When we battle him he drops his Delcatty and Altaria for Talonflame, Azumarill and Garchomp with rather strategic movesets.

And then we get to Pokemon Masters. Specifically the Melancholy Wally event where he's paired up with a shiny Gardevoir. He really wants to team up with Diantha who refuses because she says he "lacks something". Which he takes to mean as strength when she really meant how he and his partner shine with their bond. And as we see throughout the event he is actually really prioritizing winning and technical battle stuff over just bonding with his Gardevoir, causing it to disappear. Which makes him really upset leading to this heartbreaking line "Is it because I'm weak? Do you not like battling with me anymore?"

We see Wally does have a bit of a complex, no doubt influenced by him being a sick shy child who was a little overprotected by his family. But then when he sees Noland teaching others how to battle he remembers something… "Although he lost the battle...he looks so happy..."It's all coming back to me...I was once like him...And it was so much fun. But now, all I think about is winning or losing...And I'm not enjoying Pokémon battles like I used to... ... ... ...Now that I think about it, when was the last time I had fun with Gardevoir? I should apologize...I was horrible to Gardevoir!"

He realizes where's he gone wrong. He's too focused on the outcome of the battle and forgetting the most important thing is about maintaining your bond with your Pokemon. And this again goes back to that post-defeat quote at the Battle Resort. When he started to care more about winning and optimizing tactics over bonding with his Pokemon.

With the recent Galar Neo Champions promos people have been joking about how he was paired with the jerk rival Blue, Silver and Bede. When you look at the Melancholy Wally event and his dialogue at the Battle Resort, you realize this was intentional. Because while he may not tease or put down others, he is very much falling into the "jerk rival trap" of caring more about strength over just enjoying time with their Pokemon. Luckily on Pasio he seems to be just like Blue, Silver, and Bede, overcoming that pitfall. This is something I really appreciate about Wally because it's nice to see the friendly rivals fall into bad-Pokemon training habits. Just because you're not strutting around thinking that you're the best thing since slice bread doesn't mean you can't have nasty traits or habits that need to be broken and I kind of wish they did that more often because it's rare to see.

But yeah Wally's a super interesting character who proves you don't need to have a lot of screen time to make a big impact.

Have you played Pokémon Desolation? It's a very great fangame, you should follow its development if you like Reborn or Rejuvenation.

Here's the trainer I chose, Chad. (Or Ryon, as I chose to call them in my playthrough.) And yes, I indulged myself a little with some extra challenge through the password system. Side note, never try to raise a Deino from basically infancy on a serious team, it will miss constantly and you will be sad. Just wait for a later one to grow into Hydreigon or find a different dragon. Thank Arceus I got to use Infernape though. Freely get access to Iron Fist is also a blessing.

Ryon's pose is heavily referenced from the CD/DVD cover of Mitsuru Matsuoka's single for W, the credits song of Kamen Rider W Forever: A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate.

Famitsu has an interview with the Enstars staff members who came up with the idea of Ensemble Training and it has a lot of fun information. Here are some things from the interview summarized:

It was an idea from the lead illustrator and graphic designer who at first talked about a dietary app featuring Knights but it later changed to exercise because they felt diet app was too complex and not easy to add a concept of working together to be more healthy to. The lead illustrator made a proposal of it and found other staff members who were interested in helping her. At some point there was also talk of adding some romancing aspect into the game but that was discarded. (Phew!!)

They talked about it in late 2020 but the work began in March 2022. Originally they wanted to release it with Butou-kai shuffle but it was not ready yet at that point. It also wasn't originally meant as April Fool's content but then they thought it'd get a lot of attention that way. And they were right! They got more downloads than they anticipated when the app launched.

Also, it was kept approachable to everyone not only by keeping it completely free (and it'll stay without any paid content they promised) but also making sure everyone could do the exercises. The staff members who came up with the idea aren't athletic, so they tested the exercises could be done by non-trained people. They had both a professional gym trainer and Enstars staff who did muscle training to help with planning the exercises and programmes.

And lolol, the reason the day in-app changes at 4 am is because many staff members are nightowls so daily reset at 12 midnight felt too tough. Haha, I feel you. (But wait, does that mean some of them are exercising in the middle of the night??)

They had been thinking it's boring and hard to stay motivated to do exercises if you just watch videos or have to go somewhere to exercise. And that you want to be praised and encouraged. So they wrote idols giving you a lot of positive feedback. And that's why for example Izumi who's usually quite rude, sounds kinder in the app. They wanted them to tell you you're doing a good job and give you little cheers during exercises (so no demon instructor Yuzuru dlc, sorry everyone). They also wrote the characters as they would be acting in interviews or promotional settings, so even those who do not normally speak very politely, are using more keigo. Kanata got specially edited lines because he talks so slow haha.

It's so true the idols telling you good job and to keep up helps. <3

Also, they thought that maybe the voice actors would be a little bit confused about suddenly asked to be gym instructors, so they filmed an example video for the VAs to explain/show it since the game animation was still in progress. Awww!

The characters got more lines and animations than they originally planned. At first there was no instructors introducing themselves before exercises but as they created animations and lines for the four trainers (Ibara, Adonis, Izumi and Mitsuru), they thought it'd be fun to see the other characters animated and talking more too. Originally there would've just been the chibi character screen. I'm glad they decided to expand it! They were first warned that they can't have too many special animations but in the end they included all they asked for (for example Ibara's salute). And they put a lot of care into Wataru's ponytail animation!! <3

Such a passion project. I'm glad HappyEle supported their idea and let them make it into a real app. I'm again thinking that HappyEle/Cacalia CEO interview where he said he's letting the employees do what they love and want to do.

rahhhh i haven’t felt like drawing for it (i miiiight after work today?) but i have some teams picked out for the p3 pokemon au and i feel like babbling about them since ive been replaying heartgold. under da cut. a lot of the team configurations are based on a mixture of persona parallels and just vibes.

femc/kotone/minako/etc

I’ve literally redone her team a million times because I’m never satisfied with it but i forced myself to compromise on this particular configuration (she’s probably got a ton in her pc though. members that didn’t make the cut include bewear, raticate, musharna, dragapult)

blaziken represents orpheus, and duskinoir represents thanatos. the remainder are more like “i think she’d have these”. storywise in particular, plusle is a childhood pokemon matching with yuki’s minun (the protags are twins in this au as always).

yukari

these are pretty outright i think. decidueye for the obvious archery reasons (have joked that i think it’d be cute if yukari’s decidueye actually used to be very poor with its aim until she started helping it practice)

miltank being (sort of???) representative of io, and togekiss being (SORT OF???) representative of isis. (there are only so many cow/bull pokemon and a few of which im reserving for other teams)

the rest are mostly vibes based! porygon in particular is a pokemon passed down to her from her father after his death. she has a very tight bond with it.

akihiko

magnezone represents polydeuces and golurk represents caesar

the rest are mostly vibes based. aki comes off as the type of trainer who would literally fistfight his pokemon as training. his pachirisu was his sister’s first and only pokemon before she passed.

mitsuru

ceruledge represents penthesilea. empoleon Somewhat represents artemisia.

she has somewhat noble/rare pokemon to fill her team. gardevoir is a reference to her mild navigational abilities (it would be kinda funny if she was mildly psychic like sabrinabut to a lesser extent). indeedee is a pokemon she picked up at a young age, one of the first few she caught herself.

fuuka

fuuka is a coordinator as opposed to a trainer, so her team isn’t super battle-capable. lapras and musharna are meant to sort of rep lucia/juno.

i dont have heavy thoughts on her selection but i think quagsire is very close to her.

aigis

this is one of the teams that has a great number of members that relate to her personas. bastiodon, escavelier, and iron valiant are meant to represent palladion/athena. silvally is pretty much a perfect fit narratively as a partner for aigis. ninjask is there because well i think she likes it. pikachu is a match with the rest of the moonlight bridge quartet, each having an electric mouse pokemon

she’s still a robot btw. scarvio is my enabler for that being a thing within the pokemon universe

Ok, so the first of these which I’ve more or less got the main concept is the overhaul mod called ‘Monday Dusk Monolith’, and in case you don’t know what it is, to put it in summary: A monolith falls on Earth and turns people into monstrous mutants. They must be saved... by singing! so BF decides to save GF's dad in the process and this journeys begins. this is directly taken from the wiki btw. However, I don’t feel that the name works per se. There’s no monolith involved in the Au. So, the new name of this Au is:

“Is this thing on?”

*Some more shuffling is heard before the screen shows the figure. The figure appears to be a young teenage boy, roughly between 13 and 16. He was wearing a respirator suit of a dark Emerald colour, goggles and having a hood over his head. He doesn’t seem to have a belt with pokeballs however.*

“Is it working? Ok, good. Hi, my name is Mitsuru Ikiosuru, but you could call me Wally, it’s my Galarian name after all. So, if you find this, I…probably should give you a rundown of what happened here.”

*Wally grabs the camera, showing what’s happening outside the window, it looks like Petalburg City, but ravaged and some kind of red haze is covering it*

“Yeah, not a pretty sight isn’t it? But it’s real, and I’m here to tell you what happened.”

*The camera pans back to Wally*

“Ok, I’ll summarize as much as possible as to what happened with no sugarcoating. It all started a couple months ago. No one really knew what happened, but one day, 9 capsules suddenly crash landed onto the planet. No one knew what the capsules were or how they got here, but what I do know, is that the effects were disastrous. The 9 capsules started to release some sort of red gas all at the same time, the gas had different effects on whatever inhaled, for Pokémon, they’re immune and experience no change, but for humans, that’s when the nightmare started. Humans who inhaled the gas, would start to mutate into Pokémon, not any weird clones, abominations, just regular ol’ hyper aggressive Pokemon. The transformation from what I know seems to be slow and painful, once it’s done, the victim will no memory of who they once were, with only one objective: to attack anything that’s in their way. Some unfortunate trainers had turned into legendaries, and engaged in brawls with the originals. Some won, some lost and most are in a stalemate.”

*The camera pans over to a couple of hats and caps that were beside Wally. They look strangely familiar…*

“At the same time, the red gas has slowly enveloped the globe and now our atmosphere is covered in it and most have reached ground. Infecting the trainees who didn’t breathe in the gas earlier. The ones who weren’t infected eventually managed to find shelters and bunkers underground, since the gas wasn’t able to reach there, but it may soon. Some people called it the ‘Red Smog’, others the ‘Fog of Bloodshed’, some the ‘Crimson Mist’. I just call it the ‘Cardinal Haze’ since, it’s the most accurate by far. Anyways, before the release of the gas, me, my girlfriend, ex and a couple others went back to this timeline after a vacation. When it started, I was going to pack my luggage to head for wormhole back to my own dimension. I noticed several agents from T.A.N.K near the ones at the area. I saw a rabid Frosslass with the haze surrounding some portions. I was horrified but made sure not to breathe in the haze, in a panic, I accidentally blasted my music a bit loud. The frosslass suddenly appeared to snap out of its trance before saying: “Wally?”

*Some sniffles can be heard*

“Anyways, it’s been a lot since then, the frosslass was taken to containment for study, I felt bad for it but didn’t have choice. Eventually, I was able to convince the leader of T.A.N.K to help find a cure for all this, they agreed but with reluctance. Ritz, my adopted brother who works for them, told me that these pokemon appeared from rifts and have been causing trouble, some even have been executed. I was shocked by all this. As they have no idea what this is, they had to agree with me since I was the only one who is from that specific timeline. As of that moment, I unofficially joined T.A.N.K, in exchange for ‘working’ with them, I got several new upgrades to my respirator suit, as well as a couple of weapons after some time training with them. I am allowed to use my secret weapon however. My job? Capturing as many infected people as much as possible. So that they could study them. I’m still a bit skeptical though, I plan on breaking in one day to find out. For now, that’s what I plan to do.

*Some roaring noise can be heard, Wally turns his head and sighs*

“Welp, gotta go, that’s the sound of my job callin’”

*He takes down the camera and turns it off*

Yuuki tidak percaya dengan cinta pada pandangan pertama.

Baginya cinta pada pandangan pertama itu omong kosong. Cinta yang sebenarnya dibentuk oleh proses; perkenalan, pertemanan, ketertarikan, dan saling mencintai. Happy ending. Tidak ada yang instan.

Yuuki juga tidak percaya dengan frasa kesempurnaan.

Seberapa hebat pun seseorang, pasti ada satu atau dua hal yang membatasi diri. Tidak ada yang sempurna. Semua punya kelebihan dan kelemahan masing-masing. Semua sudah diciptakan sebagaimana mestinya—bahkan perjalanan hidup dan cinta pun tidak ada yang sempurna. Pasti ada lika-liku yang harus dijalani terlebih dahulu.

Namun terkadang tak bisa dipungkiri, Yuuki mendambakan kehidupan yang sempurna dan sosok yang sempurna pula. Terkadang ia juga berandai-andai seperti apa rasanya menyukai seseorang, jatuh cinta, berpelukan kemudian berciuman.

Jujur, Yuuki ingin jatuh cinta.

Bukannya Yuuki tidak memercayai frasa kesempurnaan pada tingkat ekstrim. Yuuki percaya; sempurna itu nyata, ada—hanya saja ia belum menemukan arti kesempurnaan baginya. Definisi kesempurnaan berbeda-beda. Namun suatu saat nanti, Yuuki diam-diam percaya hidupnya akan terasa lengkap—terasa sempurna. Yuuki percaya suatu saat nanti ia akan menemukan belahan jwanya. Yang pasti, yang manapun tidak masalah—toh ia menikmati hidupnya saat ini sebagai Pokemon Trainer baru.

—semua itu terpatahkan ketika ia meninggalkan zona nyaman, meninggalkan ibunya dan Profesor Odamaki untuk memulai petualangannya, menjelajahi Hoenn bersama Kimori.

Sebenarnya Yuuki cukup takut. Ia sendiri dengan Kimori dan Pokemon lainnya. Haruka juga ikut meninggalkan kampung halaman. Namun mereka tidak bersama-sama—mereka pergi dengan tujuan yang berbeda; Yuuki dengan impiannya menaklukkan kejuaraan Hoenn dan Haruka dengan impiannya menjadi ratu kontes serta melengkapi Pokedex yang diberikan ayahnya.

Padahal ada Haruka yang manis dan supel, namun Yuuki tidak merasakan getaran apapun. Sebenarnya bisa saja Yuuki jatuh cinta pada Haruka. Namun tidak bisa, ia hanya menganggap Haruka sebagai teman baiknya—sekaligus rival—saja. Tidak kurang dan tidak lebih.

Namun Yuuki bersyukur. Dalam perjalanannya, lumayan banyak hal yang ia pelajari; seperti membantu orang dalam kesusahan, menjadi Pokemon Trainer yang baik. Semua yang ia pelajari menambah wawasannya untuk mengincar lencana berikutnya. Yuuki juga berkenalan dengan orang-orang unik; si teman seumuran Mitsuru-kun yang sakit-sakitan, pelaut yang baru saja pensiun, Team Magma yang menyiksa Pokemon milik orang lain dan membuat masalah, hingga Tsuwabuki-san yang memintanya untuk mengirimkan surat untuk putranya di Kota Muro.

Mungkin ini akan menjadi perjalanan yang menarik.

Dunia Yuuki benar-benar berubah saat menginjakkan kaki ke gua yang berada di pesisir kota Muro. Dunia Yuuki yang sudah berwarna sejak kepindahannya ke Hoenn kini menjadi lebih indah. Seperti bagian dirinya yang semula memang belum lengkap, kini terlengkapi dengan sendirinya.

Semua itu terjadi ketika ia diserang sekelompok Zubat di gua. Kimori telah berevolusi menjadi Juptile. Juptile dan kawan-kawan sudah melemah, jadi Yuuki kurang bisa mengandalkannya untuk menyerang balik kawanan Zubat-Zubat nakal itu. Yuuki terpaksa melindungi dirinya dan partner-nya dari serangan Zubat-Zubat yang mengamuk, berharap setelah ini mereka akan pergi. Tubuhnya memeluk Juptile erat, menanti cabikan yang akan ia terima dari Pokemon liar tersebut.

Yuuki memejamkan mata, mengantisipiasi punggungnya akan terasa perih sebentar lagi berkat Zubat—

(Tubuhnya benar-benar bergetar.)

—namun rasa perih yang ia tunggu tak kunjung datang. Perlahan Yuuki membuka kedua matanya.

Betapa terkejutnya ketika ia melihat seseorang dengan punggung tegap dan bahu kokoh berdiri di depannya, membelakanginya sembari mengusir kumpulan Zubat dengan Metagross miliknya.

Metagross sangat besar dan kokoh, tidak seperti Juptile yang sedang-sedang saja, masih terlihat kecil dibandingkan Metagross. Yuuki merasa malu, namun juga berterima kasih pada sosok yang menyelamatkannya dan Pokemon-Pokemonnya dari situasi mencekam barusan.

Setelah Zubat tidak terlihat, sosok itu berbalik dan bertanya dengan suara lembut—yang juga mengandung ketegasan yang sulit diartikan—

"Kau tidak apa-apa?"

—dan Yuuki hanya bisa terdiam kaku ketika matanya bersibobrok dengan manik obsidian Tsuwabuki Daigo, pria yang baru saja menyelamatkannya.

Pria dengan bahu lebar dan punggung tegap itu memiliki tatapan yang sangat teguh dan menenenangkan. Kedua iris obsidian itu sangat indah untuk dipandang, seolah Yuuki terhipnotis ke dalam lautan misterius itu.

"Hei, kau tidak apa-apa?"

Pria itu bertanya lagi. Raut wajahnya khawatir. Ia menyentuh pundak yuuki, membuat Trainer muda itu mengerjap dan tersadar dari lamunannya.

"Saya baik-baik saja. Terima kasih sudah menolong kami, anu—"

"Sama-sama. Aku Tsuwabuki Daigo dan kamu?"

"Saya Yuuki dari Kota Mishiro."

Daigo menjabat tangannya. Jarinya lentik dan tetap indah dengan paduan cincin berlian di jari manis dan jari telunjuknya. Tekstur kulit Daigo tidak selembut yang ia kira, namun memberikan efek kupu-kupu yang sangat hebat pada bagian dalam perutnya. Telapak tangan Daigo terasa nyaman. Rasanya tangan kecilnya tenggelam dalam tangan besar milik Daigo yang tengah menjabat tangannya.

Ketika jabat tangan mereka berakhir, Yuuki kembali menatap Daigo. Pria itu balas menatapnya dan menyunggingkan senyum kecil. Ramah sekali.

"Ayo, Yuuki-kun. Kuantar kamu sampai keluar. Sepertinya Juptile terluka parah."

Pria itu memiliki wajah yang sangat rupawan. Wajahnya mulus tanpa cela. Di satu sisi, wajah itu terlihat polos dan ramah, di sisi lainnya wajah itu terlihat tegas dan berwibawa. Tsuwabuki Daigo itu tampan sekali. Dan ketika ia tersenyum, wajahnya berlipat kali lebih tampan dari sebelumnya.

Sempurna. Tsuwabuki Daigo adalah sosok yang sempurna—menurut Yuuki.

"Ah iya. Terima kasih Tsuwabuki-san. Saya dan Juptile sangat bersyukur."

Daigo terkekeh mendengar ungkapan terima kasih Yuuki yang menurutnya terdengar sangat kaku dan penuh rasa gugup. Menurut Daigo, Yuuki itu menggemaskan.

"Jangan panggil aku Tsuwabuki-san, tapi Daigo saja. Dan jangan bersikap formal. Santai saja. Nee, Yuuki-kun?"

Bagaimana bisa Yuuki bersikap tenang ketika jantungnya berpacu lebih cepat dari biasanya? Di satu sisi, ia senang mendapatkan perlakuan khusus dari sosok sempurna seperti Daigo.

Yuuki merasa ia jatuh cinta pada pandangan pertama. Terkutuklah shoujo manga dan anime klise yang sewaktu kecil ia tonton dan nikmati—meski ia awalnya ia tidak memercayai cinta pada pandangan pertama, namun Yuuki menikmati karya fiksi yang berkaitan dengan hal tersebut.

Yuuki menundukkan kepalanya, kemudian mengangguk patuh. Apakah ini mimpi? Bisa memanggil si tampan Daigo dengan nama depannya? Seperti sudah dekat saja—Oh, Yuuki terlalu percaya diri.

"Baiklah, Daigo-san."

"Ya, begitu lebih baik, Yuuki-kun."

Mereka berjalan beriringan, ditemani Metagross dan Juptile yang berjalan di sisi kanan Yuuki. Sesekali Yuuki mengulum senyum malu-malu. Rasanya mereka dekat sekali.

Karena hening selama perjalanan keluar gua, Daigo bercerita sedikit tentang dirinya dan batu mineral kesukaannya. Yuuki berusaha menyimak dan memberi tanggapan kecil, namun tetap saja ia tidak bisa fokus mendengar karena curi-curi pandang ke wajah berbinar Daigo yang tampak sangat bersinar ketika bercerita mengenai hobinya; mengoleksi batu dan mineral langka.

Sisi antusias Daigo terhadap batu mineral sangat manis. Ia juga jatuh cinta dengan sisi ambisius pria itu.

"Nah, sudah sampai, Yuuki-kun."

Tidak terasa mereka sudah sampai di luar gua. Seberkas cahaya luar pada siang hari membuat Yuuki kembali membiaskan pandangannya terhadap keadaan di luar.

Yuuki lega karena sudah berhasil keluar dari gua penuh Pokemon liar itu. Namun ia juga dilema; di satu sisi ia tidak ingin berpisah dengan Daigo-san secepat ini.

Melihat Yuuki yang menunduk dengan ekspresi seperti ingin menangis, Daigo tersenyum dan mengacak surai hitam Yuuki yang tertutupi dengan beanie putih miliknya. Yuuki sedikit terkejut dan kedua pipinya merona, namun tidak menolak perlakuan manis Daigo.

"Senang bisa bertemu denganmu, Yuuki-kun."

Yuuki tersenyum kecil menanggapi pernyataan Daigo.

"Aku juga senang bisa bertemu dengan Daigo-san. Daigo-san adalah sosok yang baik."

Daigo terkekeh pelan. Yuuki suka mendengar pria itu tertawa.

Daigo berjalan kembali ke dalam gua. Sebelum itu ia berbalik untuk mengucapkan selamat tinggal pada Yuuki. Dengan senyum menawannya tentu saja.

"Maaf Yuuki-kun, aku harus kembali ke dalam gua. Ada sesuatu yang harus kucari."

"Tidak apa-apa, Daigo-san. Sekali lagi terima kasih sudah menolong kami."

"Sama-sama, Yuuki-kun."

Daigo melambaikan tangannya. Senyum kecil itu masih terpampang pada wajah tampannya.

Hati-hati, Daigo-san—batinnya dalam hati.

Yuuki mengawasi hingga punggung tegap itu menghilang ke dalam kegelapan gua.

Setelah sosok Daigo benar-benar menghilang, Yuuki menyentuh dadanya—tepat dimana jantungnya berpacu sangat kencang. Wajahnya benar-benar merona sekarang begitu mengingat pria itu.

Yuuki benar-benar jatuh cinta pada pandangan pertama. Konyol memang, namun debaran di dadanya tidak bisa dibohongi. Yuuki tersenyum mengingat sosok lembut dan hangat seorang Tsuwabuki Daigo. Senyum seperti gadis-gadis muda yang sedang dimabuk asmara.

Mereka baru saja bertemu, namun Yuuki memiliki firasat kuat bahwa suatu saat nanti mereka akan bertemu kembali. Tidak lama lagi.

Membayangkan dirinya akan bertemu kembali dengan Daigo, Yuuki tersenyum. Ia berandai-andai apa yang akan terjadi pada pertemuan mereka selanjutnya.

Oh, sepertinya Yuuki melupakan sesuatu—

Surat dari Tsuwabuki-san!

—ingatkan Yuuki untuk memberi surat titipan Tsuwabuki-san kepada Daigo-san ketika mereka kembali bertemu nantinya.
