Mare Unova fit.
I tried a bit harder with the shading on this one and I don't think I quite understand how lighting works.

reblogging this here. Little sneak peak of what's to come in the future. Of course when we get there it'll be written in standard format and slightly different as my vision evolves.
>Reload
>Softresetting for rare bag search.
💼
You find yourself in an old house. Its traditionally built and a layer of dust covers everything, its clear nobody has lived here for a while. The room your in appears to be a bedroom. Maps and books litter the desks. bed, and even the floor. Star charts are pinned up all over the walls. A few of the planks in the floor seem to be loose. Being in this room makes you feel nostalgic and sad. The Whismur at your side chitters.
>Look Maps
They're maps of Hoenn, some of them are very recent while others date back 3000 years ago. A lot of them are covered in scribbles and notes.

>Look Books
There are a variety of books about history and mythology, mainly pertaining to the Super-Ancient Pokemon. One book in particular catches your attention. Its a faded notebook hand bound with dragon hide. The title reads "Look to the Stars: 10 Draconid Legends Unedited and Unabridged." The name of the author is simply Aster. Looking at it makes you long for days long past.

A few of the floorboards seem loose. Would you like to pry them up?
>Yes
It takes a bit of effort but you manage to pry one of the floorboards loose. There's a little cavity underneath. Inside is a blue and red stone, a silver anklet in the shape of a spiraling dragon inset with a glistening rainbow jewel, and a note.
>Read Note
The note reads as follows
"Hey, Girly.
If you're reading this then I'm dead. Sorry about that. I know, I know, I should know better then to go and get myself killed but I had too. My visions said that if I didn't go, everyone else there would die. And we can't go having that now, can we. But enough about that. You've probably already noticed the anklet and the stone. You know what those are, right? Course you do, you're smart. You see me use them all the time.
I've hidden them because I had a vision that some day, some day very soon, two powerful men are going to want to get their hands on them. If you've found them, I want you to take them. That Anklet hides a dangerous secret far beyond Mega Evolution. I was never able to figure it out but I know you can. And I know you'll make a fantastic Lorekeeper. Not because of visions but because I have absolute faith in you. I always have and I always will.
I'm sorry I had to leave you so soon. I was really hoping to be able to watch you grow up and thrive. I wanted to be beside you as you learned about the world. But I guess it wasn't meant to be. Now go, take the Anklet and the Stone and save the world. Give this story a happy ending.
Your big sis,
Aster
PS. Just tell that girl you like how you really feel already. Holding it in is just gonna make it worse.
PPS. If you haven't met her yet, just ignore the post-script."
As you finish reading, everything begins to go blurry. Tears well in your eyes. You look up in a desperate attempt to keep them from falling but its futile, your tears stain the page.
You punch the floor in a combination of anger and sadness. She knew. She knew and she still went. And for what? A couple of Devon Grunts? Why? They'd invaded their home? What did they do to deserve saving? Nothing! They should have all died and she should have lived!
Your Whismur chitters. She's right, you have a job to do. No use wasting time crying.

>Put on Mega Anklet
You fasten the Mega Anklet onto your leg. Suddenly, the Rayquaza-Marking-Esque details begin to glow a brilliant rainbow color. The Key Stone inset in the Dragon's head glows as well and then projects out a dome of stars, a night sky similar too, but different from, the one you know. Lines draw themselves across the 3D star map, connecting stars into the shape of constellations. You recognize each of them. The Guardian, the Hero, the Conflict, The Orbs, the King, Death, and then the Orbs again. Weird, why was the Orbs there twice?
You wonder what it could mean. Were they coordinates? But coordinates from a several hundred year old star chart wouldn't be much good. Wait, no, they were a message. The constellations depicted told a story. The Guardian Chose a Hero to end the Conflict with the Orbs. And when the Conflict was ended, the King, or rather, the Kings Died. And then the Orbs at the end meant...
"The Orbs are in the Royal Tombs." You breathe. Then louder you cheer. "I found it! Finally! So long, Team Magma, I don't need you or your loser leader anymore!"
"What was that about Leader Maxie?" A masculine voice says from behind you. You turn around to find yourself face to face with two Magma Grunts.

Snakewood could best be described as a zombie apocalypse written by an edgy teenager who watches anime. It’s fairly interesting, although very flawed.
Wait, that's a real game? I was joking!
#pokeblogging#pkmn irl#pokemon irl#irl pkmn#mare responds#//i (mod) actually am fully aware of Pokemon snakewood#//fun fact: Jericho and wraith (the protagonists of snakewood) are canon to the Auraverse#//they're very distant cousins of mare on her mom's side#//and yes those are their actual names

Hey there. I've got some tasty, tasty info about a hot new universe cooking up.
Well, actually its not new but you get the point.
Universe 2014Δ also known as The Auraverse (Rotomblr Branch). Don't worry about the other branch, its not relevant.
Blogs contained within:
Mare Birch (@aura-acolyte): The Hero of Hoenn and Chosen of Rayquaza, Marie "Mare" Lillian Birch saved her world's Hoenn from the threat of Groudon and Kyogre unleashed by Teams Magma and Aqua respectively.
Zinnia (@last-lorekeeper): The Lorekeeper of the Draconid People, she travels the world searching for stories. She also assisted in the saving of Hoenn.
The Aqua-Magma Conservatory (@aqua-magma-official): The official blog of a reformed Teams Aqua and Magma, now combined as one organization called the Aqua-Magma Conservatory, intent on helping as many hurt and injured Pokemon as possible. Its run by Social Media Manages Kai and Nicky.
Lisia (@appeallove): Dazzling dizzying doldrums defying! The miraculous contest idol Lisia takes the stage! Well, not as much anymore. She mostly deals with management stuff but still manages to find time to put on dazzling performances.
Gabby and Ty (@hoenn-tv-official): The intrepid reporter Gabby and her long suffering Camera Man Ty are here to sniff out the latest scoop. Or they would be if they hadn't been demoted to Social Media Managers due to costing the Network a fortune in legal fees.
Phoebe (@phantom-flower): The spooky Ghost Type expert of the Elite Four, she claims that she can see and speak to phantoms and spirits. May or may not be a psychopomp.
Latias (@themostspecialestlegendaryever): The most specialest and bestest legendary ever has a Rotomblr blog. Go feed her snackytreats.
Archie and Maxie (@landandseaunited): The Co-Leaders of the Aqua-Magma Conservatory. Great guys, even greater dads. They fully regret their actions.
Anabel (@hoenn-battle-frontier-official): The Frontier Brain who runs the Battle Tower of Hoenn's Battle Frontier and also their social media account. She's rather reserved and more than a bit antisocial but she's on a quest to make some friends.
//yeah, in case you couldn't tell, I run all these blogs. That's not even all the ones I run. I'm sorry in advanced for possibly making your life hell.
Thanks for the information anon! They have all been added tho the map!

Sunset Shimmer as she’s seen in my Auraverse!! So, as I mentioned in my last Auraverse post, some roles have been moved around a bit. Twilight’s no longer the princess of friendship and another pony was picked out to be Celestia’s Protege before Twi even enrolled in the school of magic. That pony was none other than Sunset Shimmer, a very talented student Celestia nurtured to take over her duties whenever she left the position.
Sunset isn’t the Princess of Friendship, but the princess of Vindication/Forgiveness. She wasn’t always the best and had to turn herself around and work hard to earn her title.
When Celestia and Luna thought it was time, they retired, combined their crowns, and made Sunset Shimmer the official ruler of Equestria.
I didn’t do this with Twi’s design but parts of Sunset’s design is heavily inspired by Starlight’s haircuts (with some wonkyness I’ll have to iron out in the future lol.) Starlight will have a similar thing going on with her mane as well, as her role is basically Sunset’s now. (Someone else will have Starlight’s role :3c)

Would any of your next gens be smiling friends fans lol
Yes! Snowcone and her Nana Raz are the first to come to mind
The show would be another one of their inside jokes, with them constantly quoting it to each other and the rest of their loved ones to the point where it’s like they’re speaking their own language. Everypony around them is utterly confused when they start speaking their nonsense with those funny voices, and their family doesn’t like when they hog the TV to watch cartoons all the time, but it makes them laugh and they have fun with it
Also, Tea Cake
She’s that kid who watches TV super loudly in the middle of the living room, and her parents don’t like to tell her no because hasn’t their baby girl been through enough already? But they definitely wonder if stuff like this is rotting her brain

reblogged OC asks post questions:
care, for good, for bad, family?
Care: How does your OC engage in self-care, if at all? If they don't, why not?
She still doesn't do it very often. She'll claim she's doing self-care but she's really not. The best she manages is maybe taking a nap but other than that she spends most of her time running from her problems. Sometimes literally (no need to think about your problems if you're running around the woods).
For Good: Is there anyone in your OC's life who had an undeniable positive impact on who they are as a person? How did knowing this person improve your OC's life?
Mare for certain. She's a lot more open and inclined to help people than she used to be because of her. She's also starting to let herself care for people. Five years ago she probably wouldn't have volunteered to go with Kimia into the crater unless there was something in it for her.
For Bad: Is there anyone who had an undeniable negative impact on your OC’s life? How did your OC deal with that change? Have they been able to move on?
Joseph Stone, though he's hardly aware of it. If it weren't for Devon, Aster wouldn't have died and she wouldn't have been sent on a downward spiral leading to her actions during An Account of Rayquaza's Chosen.
Well, that's not entirely true. Within the Auraverse Multiverse Aster's death is a fixed point. Even if she hadn't died from Devon, something else would have killed her. But Joseph Stone still unarguably ruined her life.
Family: What's your OC's family like? Is it a family of blood, choice, or something else? How does your OC feel about their blood relations? If they have a family of choice, how did they come together?
All she really has left of her blood family is her Grandma but she's been avoiding her as much as possible out of shame. Other than that, she has Mare and that's kinda it. She has the potential to find family in Team Magma but she'd have to work hard to earn it.

Since @normal-paldean-student did a Roleswap AU with Renee in Mare's place I wrote up a roleswap AU with Mare in Renee's place.
First big change: she doesn’t have Aura. Which is a problem because it means she can’t punch her way out of situations anymore. That means she has to get a lot better at battling. She also can’t heal. Which is fine cause her injuries go away when she goes to the next universe but does mean she can’t be as reckless about throwing herself into danger as she usually is.
Second big change: She starts with Crystal cause that’s the first game with a female player character option which also means she starts in New Bark Town instead of Goldenrod.
So, I’m gonna go through each gen individually and only cover mainline games because otherwise we’d be here all day and also I don’t have a lot of experience with a lot of the side-games. She went through those but I won’t talk about them. Also she still looks like herself just wearing different clothes. Also, also I’ll be calling this version Shifter Mare and the og version Auraverse Mare.
So, Crystal. Different town, same backstory except there’s no Norman to save them. Her mom encourages her to go on her Journey to get as far away from her father as possible. She doesn’t want to leave her mom but eventually agrees, promising to come back when she’s strong enough to face him. Her starter is a Cyndaquil.
She and Silver start off on the wrong foot when she just freaking decks him. This is, like, the only time engaging in physical violence actually works because it’s just really funny to me. What a first impression. They do eventually bond over having shitty dads and wanting to become stronger, though, and Silver’s probably one of her best friends of all time.
She takes beating the Pokemon League much more seriously than Auraverse Mare because that’s how she gets stronger. Eventually she beats Lance and kicks her dad’s ass (well, it’s more like she scares him away cause he has no Pokemon) then decides “Hey, that was fun, what if I did it again” and does the Kanto circuit before climbing Mt. Silver and defeating Red, something Auraverse Mare could never do. Climbing Mt. Silver really did a number on her though so as soon as the battle’s over she passes out…
…And wakes up in the back of a moving van. We’re in Ruby now. She’s a lot more hostile towards Norman in this timeline than even Auraverse Mare, partially because she just got force into a new timeline with zero warning and partially because, in her experience, dads are bad all the time. She, um, isn’t particularly nice to Professor Birch either but manages to hold it together long enough to get a Pokemon and Brendan (who she has a comparatively less hostile relationship with than Auraverse Mare because they don’t have the “We’re cousins so we gotta fight” attitude) seems happy enough.
She does have a bit of a crisis though because unlike Auraverse Mare, who put all her self-worth into being a hero, Shifter Mare put all her self-worth into being strong (Silver-type behavior, though she actually recognizes from the start that love and friendship works better than just using the strongest Pokemon like a tool) and without her Pokemon she’s not strong and if she’s not strong then what is she?
When she gets to Petalburg she is ecstatic at the idea of getting to battle Norman, who for his part is very confused as to why his daughter is suddenly acting hostile towards him and also doesn’t seem to know who he is, and when he sets the “you ned 4 gym badges to face me” condition she goes “Yeah, sure, I’ll do that, it’ll be more satisfying to beat you into the ground when I’m stronger anyways.” She also scares the shit out of Wally with how intense she is but they do eventually become friends and she’s quite fond of the kid.
She also bonds with Archie a bit. Not as much as Auraverse Mare but he likes her spunk and she likes his spirit. They beat Team Magma, she beats the Pokemon League, and gets to stick around long enough to take on the Battle Tower before being pulled away again.
Sapphire goes pretty similar. Shifter Mare’s less hostile towards Norman and Birch this time cause she’s figured out by now that maybe they’re not all that bad. She feels a little betrayed by Archie being the bad guy this time around even though she knows it’s an alternate universe so it’s not the same Archie. Bing bang boom, Emerald time.
At this point Shifter Mare’s growing pretty sick of this. Some mysterious unseen force refuses to let her get strong. Every time she reaches her peak she gets reset. But when she screams to the sky nothing answers so she’s forced to just go along with it.
It’s also worth noting at this point that Shifter Mare isn’t shy about the fact that she’s been traveling across universes. She’ll reference past adventures, mention things she should have no way of knowing about, and just say “I’m from an alternate universe.” This is really confusing for everyone else, who frequently question her sanity and also the fact that she finishes their sentences. Half the time she doesn’t even bother letting people finish their exposition, just cutting them off with “Yeah, I know already.”
Anyways, she’s mildly pleased to see that Emerald is more different than Ruby and Sapphire. Wallace being Champ instead of certified sopping wet cat Steven Stone is refreshing and the Battle Frontier is much more fun than the Battle Tower. But, unfortunately, it can’t last. Kanto’s next and Shifter Mare’s starting to think maybe she just wasn’t meant to be strong, maybe she was supposed to be weak and powerless and friendless forever. But if she’s supposed to be weak and powerless what else is there for her.
Anyway, Fire Red. Shifter Mare feels weird about this one because she knows this one and she knows it’s not supposed to be her story. To her, this is Red’s story. Blue is Red’s rival. Pallet Town is Red’s home. She’s not supposed to be here.
She does find a new purpose, though. If this is the past (technically) maybe she can find Silver and save him from his father. It wouldn’t be her Silver but it would be a Silver. And, hey, she kind of owed it to him to try.
So she goes through the Kanto League, unnerved the whole way through, but no matter how hard she searched she couldn’t find Silver. Even after she became Champion and had all of the League’s resources at her disposal she couldn’t find him. Not that she got much time to search because she got sucked into another world not long after becoming Champ.
Take two, Leaf Green. For the first time and last time, Mare goes off-script. No Gym Challenge, only searching for Silver. And it has disastrous consequences. Though Mare is making herself quite the nuisance to them in her search for Silver, because she’s not following the main plot route, Team Rocket achieve all their goals and thus gain total domination over the Kanto region, just their first step on their way to conquering the world. And it was all for nothing too because she never finds Silver.
Next world! Diamond! Uh, Mare’s not doing too hot. She was just indirectly responsible for so much suffering. And she can’t talk to anybody about it because nobody would know what she was talking about. Plus she keeps losing her support network. So she makes a resolution to never allow anything like that to happen again. From now on, if anybody was suffering it was her duty to put a stop to it. That was the only way she would ever be worth anything and the only way to atone for what she’d done. There’s the Savior Complex. Took a while but we got there.
Aside from that, the new universe was pretty nice. She thought Barry was a bit annoying and she didn’t like the dress she had to wear (were there no clothing shops in Sinnoh?) but it was nice. Though she couldn’t help but be on edge, expecting something bad to happen at any moment. And she wasn’t wrong to be. Team Galactic was on the scene and they were far more threatening than any foe she’d faced in the past. The amount of suffering they caused and the Pokemon they abused infuriated Mare, who tore through their ranks with her Pokemon, completing the gym challenge along the way so she could use HMs. Why were there so many HMs in this universe?
Pearl was pretty much the same story but Platinum was different. Whereas in the previous two adventures she’d basically been speedrunning, here she slowed down a bit. This was her third run and she was kinda tired. This meant that she actually listened when Cyrus explained his motivations and it also meant that she saw how much pain he was in. Before she’d seen him as just a big bad guy she needed to beat but he had clearly suffered in the past. She tried to reason with him several times throughout her adventure but it ultimately didn’t work and he tried to go through with the plan anyways. It still taught her a valuable lesson, though: bad guys are people too. Oh, also people seemed a lot more willing to consider her alternate dimension story than usual. Well, Cynthia and Cyrus were, at least. Doing research into Sinnoh history makes you a bit more open to the possibility.
Heart Gold is next. It wasn’t really that traumatizing compared to the others but it was weird being back in Johto. It was all so familiar but also very, very different. Her father was nowhere in sight, there’s this guy called Ethan hanging around, and there was a Battle Frontier apparently (that was exciting). Most notable, though, was this universe had a Silver and they started off on a really weird note because the moment Mare saw him she broke down crying and hugged him as tight as she could while apologizing so much. Which was weird for him because this wasn’t her Silver and he had absolutely no idea who she was.
Other than that it and Soul Silver were pretty standard affairs. Mare tried her best to put Silver on the right path but never quite had the same friendship with him as she had with her Silver. She may have cried… a lot. She actually freaked Whitney out by crying after winning the Gym Battle because that’s what she was supposed to do, not the Challenger.
After that nice little breather, we’re back on the heavy stuff. Black is next. She has a… complex relationship with N. She can see where he’s coming from and understands not wanting to see Pokemon suffer but she also thinks he’s a hypocrite for claiming to want to set Pokemon free yet also using them in battle. Even if the Pokemon do agree to it he’s still having them do the work instead of defending his ideals himself. She also decks him at least once.
In White she treats N with a lot more sympathy, knowing his whole situation and relating to it. The first thing she does upon meeting this version of him is give him a hug and promise to get him out of this which he doesn’t really understand. She actually manages to form a genuine friendship with him because she’s the first person besides his sisters to treat him with legit compassion and not see him solely as a tool, a king, or an enemy.
Black 2 and White 2 are weird. She was used to alternate versions of her friends but it was weird seeing Cheren and Bianca 2 years older than her while she hadn’t aged a day. It was also kind of depressing because they’d moved on to new things while she was still doing the same thing because she had too. Everyone else could move forward, she was stuck in the same cycle forever.
In other news, Hugh worried her significantly because he reminded her of Silver just with not terrible parents. His only desire was to get stronger to fight Team Plasma and it seemed like he was willing to go to any length to do it. His heart was in the right place but his head wasn’t. She made sure to keep a close eye on him and try her best to set make sure he doesn’t do something stupid that he’ll regret. Also I’m taking creative liberty and Ghetsis is killed by Black/White Kyurem in this version because I think it’s poetic that he’s killed by the beast he created and was foolish enough to think he could control, thus falling victim to his own hubris.
Pokemon X. She’s kinda surprised that she has this large friend group now. Usually she’s got one or two rivals and that’s it. It’s kind of nice cause it’s something she’s never really had before. Mega Evolution gives her quite the shock as well as the Fairy Type being a thing now. She thinks it’s all very cool. Name a more iconic duo than Mare and a Mega Lucario.
She pegs Lysandre as a bad guy immediately because she’s heard his rhetoric before from other villains and tries to alert somebody too it but everyone kind of dismisses her except for her friends. So with no adults to rely on (as usual, tbh) they’re forced to deal with this themselves. Also Mare hates Xerosic with a passion for what he did to Emma. Pokemon Y is more or less the same with the exception that she tries (and fails) to get into the Geosenge Base. Oh, also Mare is terrible at fashion. Like, just the worst.
ORAS. Oh I’ve been excited to get here. The first Region Mare ever shifted too. But unlike with Heart Gold and Soul Silver’s Johto, the Hoenn of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is very different from the one she knew. It was still familiar but at every turn she ran into something different. The people looked different, the cities looked different. A lot of the major events were still the same and yet they were so different. It was almost disorienting, going through the same events and yet not being able to predict what would happen next. But hey, at least she finally got her iconic ribbon.
She also falls in love for the first time. Shifter Mare finally gets to meet Zinnia and cannot handle the flirting. In Omega Ruby, Zinnia takes off before she has time to actually sort through these feelings but in Alpha Sapphire they actually manage to start a relationship… which doesn’t last long because Mare shifts again. Womp womp.
Sun is another entry in the “Your parent is terrible, I am going to be your friend now.” saga. As soon as Mare figures out what’s going on with Lillie and Gladion and their mom (she has her suspicions from the start that they’ve got something going on with their parent but she doesn’t know it’s Lusamine specifically until the reveal) she makes it her mission to ensure their safety. She also feels for Guzma and Team Skull and while at first she dismisses them as kind of silly by the end she actually has a lot of respect for them.
The Post-Game, though, that’s where things get real interesting. Because Anabel is a faller, making her the first person Mare’s ever met who has also gone through interdimensional travel. And she has no idea she even did it because her memory is gone. Mare’s not entirely sure how to respond to the whole thing and neither are Looker, Nanu, and Anabel who certainly hadn’t been expecting to meet a girl who had traveled to several dimensions. The whole thing gets very messy very fast.
Also Mare meets Red and Blue and is really unsure about what to think of the fact that they’re in their 30s and she’s still a teenager.
When Moon rolls around she befriends Lillie immediately, though this is still Mare so her aggressive and boisterous personality can be a bit much for her at times. Gladion is resistant but does eventually form a begrudging friendship, guess you can’t win over every Silver-coded rival. She also treats Team Skull like people instead of jokes and tries her best to get others to do the same.
I’ll be up front, I don’t know what happens in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon outside of the fact that Lusamine is kind of sort of a good guy but Mare’s suspicious of her the whole time. I do know what happens in the Rainbow Rocket Post Game, though. Remember that one world Mare accidentally screwed over by going off script? Well that Giovanni has discovered interdimensional travel. So, uh, this one’s kind of on Mare. Anyways, she beats him, he taunts her about how she never found Silver, time to move on.
Sword and Shield… is pretty by the book, honestly. Mare is extremely frustrated that Leon refuses to let her get involved in any way until the very end but other than that nothing remarkable happens. I didn’t play the DLC so I don’t know what happened there so… moving on.
Finally, Scarlet and Violet. Because putting Mare in a school is a good idea. She gets in trouble basically immediately but is let off the hook cause its her first day and Director Clavell’s nice like that. In regards to her friends, she bonds with Nemona over their shared love of battling, she deduces that Penny is Cassiopeia but doesn’t say anything (she also does not deduce that totally radical and regular student Clive is actually Director Clavell because I think that’s hilarious), and the moment she meets Arven she’s like “Yeah, I think we should punch your parents in the face.”
She’s actually kind of on edge the whole time, actually, because the whole thing is so low level. No world ending catastrophes, no large scale criminal organizations. The stakes weren’t necessarily low, the life of Arven’s Mabosstiff was very much in danger, but it wasn’t the same “everyone’s gonna die” stakes she was used to. She was almost glad when they had to face off against AI Turo/Sada and destroy a dangerous time machine.
And, uh, that’s it. She’s kind of in the same position as Renee, waiting for the cycle to repeat once again.

Earth Never Stops - Part 1 - Oreburgh Mines
Summary: Oreburgh Mine is Sinnoh’s only remaining source of coal and, as such, serves as its main source of electricity alongside Flowey Meadows’ countless wind turbines. It contains enough resources for years to come, but what may be more interesting to the casual tourist visiting the region is the presence of fossils in its rocks, waiting to be discovered between two coats of black ore. As such, it requires constant functioning and there has to be someone to manage the miners, right? Well, it works until the main gear fails: the foreman is, after all, only human.
Length: 2.5K words
Notes: Someone will have to smack my head into oblivion so I don't write that kind of shit ever again. I'm sorry for this, even if I know I'll probably continue to write it beyond reason. Let's hope this isn't the new Symphonie Cacophonie lmao The OCs are cameos of my PDV characters Luc Parillot (Luke) and Timothée "Tim" Ethan (Timothy).Huge thanks to Magnetism and their Auraverse, whose Roark's been an inspiration for my own interpretation of the character. http://archiveofourown.org/works/10698855 It's some good stuff so please check it out, it's worth a read much more than what you're about to read because it has more plot than, essentially, "mine sickfic".I have to expose some headcanons and stuff which count in this story: -I headcanon the Nurse Joy who appears in this as a "doctor" because she can also diagnose humans. Such a famous mine would have at least a bit of security, wouldn't it? -I know Machop is used for mining in the games, but I also added Geodude because it's literally a punching rock who can learn Rock Smash. -I don't know what a foreman does in a mine despite living in the north of France and having seen mine history here and there. Turns out having once visited a terril and Roubaix's La Piscine museum isn't enough to make you versatile in mining history and functioning. Hell, I even had to Google what a foreman was because I'm that terrible.Writing got me thinking: can you get OOC a character who doesn't have much dialogue in their original material?

Oreburgh Mine is Sinnoh’s only remaining source of coal and, as such, serves as its main source of electricity alongside Flowey Meadows’ countless wind turbines. It contains enough resources for years to come, but what may be more interesting to the casual tourist visiting the region is the presence of fossils in its rocks, waiting to be discovered between two coats of black ore.
As such, it requires constant functioning and there has to be someone to manage the miners, right? The role goes to the foreman, who is always up. In any case, there’s a substitute, but he’s usually not in Oreburgh City since the foremen seems to have an iron health. Someone working in the mines would joke that their previous foreman eventually became Canalave City’s Iron-type Gym Leader.
The following and current foreman is the youngest they’ve had yet. Byron used to bring his son to the mine from time to time since the latter was a child, and some of the eldest miners remembered seeing a newly born Roark, twenty years before. It was like he was born with a pickaxe in his hands, and he was already excavating fossils when he was in elementary school. What was once a tease of Byron, “your son is gonna replace you before we know it”, became reality when the foreman left Oreburgh City for Canalave City, called by the League themselves to take care of its Gym after its previous Leader had retired.
Nobody was really surprised when the boy, the eighteen-year-old boy mind you, was picked by Byron as his successor. It was as if they had always been around Roark, and it had “only” been a bit more than a decade, but the transition felt natural. It didn’t mean he didn’t remain in the shadow his father, foreman for twenty years before him, to whom the miners were all attached, and some considered him their own father, in some way.
The foreman sub’s been missing for the twenty-fifth week in a row. “Where in the hell could he be?” isn’t a real question in the mines anymore: it’s more of a private joke. A question nobody really cares for the answer, and usually it’s replaced by the latest, funniest place to put in a conversation. Last time, it was someone’s ass. Maybe comedy isn’t their forte, but as long as it makes the other miners laugh, it’s all right.
Today, Luke is asking the question to Tim, who simply replies “In Canalave’s Gym, right where Former Boss lost to a ten-year old girl and her Gastrodon”. Tim then shots a look in their current foreman’s direction, only to notice he doesn’t even cringe at the teasing of his own dad.
“Boss,” Tim calls out, “you heard me? Your dad lost to a Gastrodon of everything. How ridiculous is that?”
“Oh, right,” the foreman responds with delay, “that’s right. Gastrodon. Canalave Gym.” He forces a snicker out of his mouth.
“How’s the Gym going?” Luke asks. It’s been ages since he’s taken a break in the Gym. Last time, he got to see a blonde-haired girl beat the Gym with a Turtwig and a Starmie of everything.
“It’s going… well I guess. I broke my latest lose streak yesterday…”
Luke and Tim look at each other. The former shots another look at Roark while the second one orders their Machops to work a bit on their own for now. Once they both thumb up each other, they get closer just so they can speak about stuff their foreman shouldn’t hear them talking about.
“There’s something wrong about the boss,” Luke tells him in a whisper. “He’s quieter than usual.”
“He may just be tired,” Tim replies, almost shrugging off Luke’s worried expression. “The boy’s also a Gym Leader and whatnot.”
“I could have sworn he was usually the first one to make jokes about how busy his life is. He doesn’t even bother with our jokes today!”
“Your dad instincts are playing again. This isn’t your daughter we’re speaking about, it’s the boss. Byron’s blood runs in his veins, he’s fine.”
Tim still looks at their foreman. His own face doesn’t seem as confident in his beliefs as before.
“On second thought, the boss looks a bit weird. He’s a bit slow too.”
“Right? The sub’s not here though, so he can’t entirely leave us without having another foreman to make sure it’s secure.”
“I don’t want to interrupt you on purpose, but I think he’s looking this way. Let’s go back to work and discuss that after lunch.”
While he mines, Tim stumbles upon what looks like a fossil, a weird one of that. He swears he has never seen such a fossil before, despite having worked there for twenty years. His scientist of a husband walks behind him.
“Mark,” he calls him out, “come check out that fossil. I don’t think I’ve seen one like that before.”
The scientist walks to the rock and examines it carefully with his gloves and glasses.
“It’s a Helix Fossil. They’re usually found in Kanto, but there are some in the Underground. It’s very rare to see such a big one in a mine.”
“What about we tell the boss? I’m sure he’s going to lost it in front of it!”
“I’ll let you get him then.”
That’s what Tim does. He goes the fastest he can to his foreman, who’s in another part altogether of the mine, probably making sure the Machops trained to dig alone do their job correctly and safely. He swears he can hear some pants and maybe some coughing echoing between the rocky walls. Finding him and his red hard hat isn’t difficult, and it doesn’t take long for the miner to join his “boss”.
“Boss, Boss, I found something incredible! Come check it out!” he screams in the mine, getting the attention of Pokémons around him.
“What is it…?” a weak voice replies to him, as the foreman turns towards him. His helmet isn’t put on correctly, which is weird for someone as cautious as him on security for everyone inside the mine.
“I found a very rare fossil according to Mark. I thought I should at least tell you so you can check it out later.”
“Works for me… Oh, if you’re here, can you check out on the other miners for me a bit? Tell them I’ll check up on them once I’m done here…”
“Sure thing, Boss.”
“Thank you…”
Tim finally gets what Luke meant earlier. He would ask him if he was alright, or something alike, but he has a job to do and the boss probably doesn’t like to be bothered with such questions. He’s probably just tired and focused on whatever he’s doing. He’s a bit hesitant to get to his previous working spot, but he still makes his way there.
Suddenly, he feels something grapping his pants. He looks at what could possibly be clutching his leg: a Geodude. Wait, this can’t be a wild Geodude, there isn’t any wild Pokémon left in that zone of the mine. The fluorescent band it has around its left arm immediately tells him it belongs to the boss. It seems to cry for help.
Tim lowers to the rock Pokémon’s level.
“What is it, big guy?” he asks it.
Geodude points to the back of this section of the mine with its other arm, its face void of its usual anger, replaced with worry. What can it possibly be worried for? This doesn’t reassure the miner at all.
“You want me to follow you there?”
The Rock-type Pokémon jumps around a bit as it lets go of his pants before starting to make his way to where they both come from. Tim decides to follow: there may be someone trapped under rocks that fell, or there may be an Aron they need to take care of.
He decides to run back there instead of walking, as he’s afraid someone got jeopardized. On the way there, he recognizes the specially-trained Machops looking a bit panicked, just like the Geodude he’s following. This doesn’t sit well within him: the only person he’s seen there for a while is Roark. If their foreman has found death between rocks, they’re pretty much fucked for the remaining century. They’ll probably all get fired too. He doesn’t realize he’s crossing fingers.
The Geodude, unfortunately, brings him where he spoke to his boss barely minutes ago. The lack of light, which he finds weird because it was lit just fine before, makes it so he has to turn on his own helmet’s headlight. He can hear the usual sound of pants, something entirely ordinary in itself, aside form the fact he’s never heard these pants in particular. This can’t be good at all.
The miner stops right in his track as the Geodude goes next to the person lying on the floor of the mine. This can’t be possible. He must be in some kind of weird dream, and he has to find a way to wake up. He still runs to the lying body, just like the Pokémon before him.
“Boss?!” he yells as he kneels next to the other man. “Hey, Boss, this isn’t time to sleep! You gotta wake up, this is a mine!”
Tim puts a hand on his shoulder and shakes it off in an attempt to wake the guy up, to no success. He just knows he’s alive: he can hear his breathing, which sounds ragged if not difficult.
“What the fuck do I do…?” Tim says to himself, truly wondering what he can do with an unconscious Roark, the latter’s pickaxe and excavation kit, a Geodude and five autonomous Machops around him. The pickaxe and the kit can wait, really. The Pokémons, a bit less. He just hopes the only idea he has will work…
His foot hits a lone Pokéball which rolls until he grabs it. He finds five of them near it, all marked with a special sticker representing the Coal Badge on them.
“Geodude, come back,” he says as he points the ball towards the Pokémon in question, successfully calling him back. He’s surprised that even worked.
“Guys, you too, come back,” he then says as he points each ball to the Machop group, once again ending in pure success. He puts away the balls in the bag near him before taking it and putting it over his shoulder.
It’s with a pained look and an ache in his heart that he takes his foreman in his arms. He feels incredibly light for a miner: it may be him who is pretty strong, or the boy being a lightweight when he’s unconscious, or just both at the same time. He’ll ask for the guys to get the pickaxe and kit later: for now, there’s something more urgent than recovering some mining tools, no matter how important they are to Roark.
It takes a bit of time, and Tim feels like he’s carrying a statue made out of glass when, clearly, he shouldn’t. He braces himself for everybody else’s reaction: he just hopes it’s not too bad, otherwise they’ll have issues, and nobody wants to cause a coal lack in the entire region, not to mention none of them want harm to their foreman for Arceus’s sake!
He gets to remember it’s noon and lunch time when he reaches his usual zone of work, which is next to the entrance, so not many people are around. The less, the better. However, the nearest infirmary-like area he knows of is already outside of the mines: he has to walk past everyone else to bring their boss where someone can say what exactly happened to him.
Luke spots him from the entrance and runs to him, his own face filled with anything but joy.
“What happened to him?!” he screams, eyes fixated on the carried one.
“I don’t know… I was telling him about the fossil discovery I had made, but as I left his Geodude grabbed my leg and made me follow it, and when I arrived he was already knocked out…” Tim replies. “We don’t have time to waste, I have to bring him somewhere.”
“Wait a second. I need to check something…”
Luke rises the foreman’s helmet a little and puts his naked hand first on his forehead, then on the other man’s one, before almost cringing in a hiss.
“That’s what I thought. He’s running one hell of a fever man.”
“A fever?! He’s been sick all that time?! Quick, we have to run to the infirmary! Inform the others please!”
“Roger that.”
Tim isn’t walking at the speed of a Dunsparce now: no, he’s fucking running for someone else’s life to their infirmary, hoping there’s their usual doctor there. He can trust Dr Taylor to be there, right? She’s always there for them, she’ll be there for Roark too. That’s one unusual case for them all, and he hopes his hardest it’ll be alright.
Honestly, he’s afraid shitless when he kicks the door to knock, his hands obviously unavailable to do so. The pink-haired woman opens the door and she looks like she’s going to scold the hell out of him for kicking the door.
“Hello, Timothy. Why makes you behave like a Growlithe all of a…” she starts to tell him before her voice comes to a halt.
As soon as she sees his face then lowers her eyes, her face takes a sharp turn.
“Oh goodness… Put him on the bed,” she reacts as her thumb points to the inside, “I’ll see what’s wrong.”
He executes her orders and, soon enough, they’re both in the room, looking over the third person in the bed. After taking off the red helmet, he lets her examine his boss, more anxious than he’s been in ages, as she silently works on him.
“What does he have, doctor?” Tim asks.
“It seems like exhaustion and overwork has caught to him,” she replies in a much calmer voice. “He should be all right as long as he rests for a few days.”
“But…”
“Before you say it,” Dr Joy replies in a sadder tone, “I know Mr Roark has a very busy life and probably can’t afford many break days, especially since the summer rush is about to start. However, I can’t let him work when he overworked himself to illness like this.”
“Then, what can we do?”
“We’ll have to see that as soon as possible. I’ll have to call the substitute foreman by myself to justify his suddenly needed presence… Please go take your break, Timothy. Just tell the other miners about the situation, will you?”
“Sure thing. See ya later, Dr Joy.”
“See you.”
Tim can’t shake the situation off his head as he walks to his friends and workmates, lost in thoughts, hoping someone finds a solution real fast unless they all want to get in some serious troubles. The less they see the director of Fuego Inc, the better, especially when Roark isn’t here to discuss the matter with his own boss.
He sits next to Mark and unpacks his lunch as he summarizes the situation, a work already started by Luke. The summery air of early June around them all feels heavy, all of a sudden.
