I actually love the shin and lihua scene because here are two women who are angry in different ways, and neither is narratively undermined.

Shin is angry in a way that is considered morally reprehensible. Her anger is rooted in envy and pride, and her actions are vindictive - all of which are traits that are traditionally seen as the natural wedge in female relationships; she wishes to strip lihua's place in the world and does so in a calculated way, even though she is described by Maomao to be influenced purely by emotions.

Lihua, on the other hand, is shown to be a fair, just and logical woman who isn't swayed by her emotions. Her anger is righteous due to the nature of Shin's actions towards her, yet her way of showing it is impulsive. She slaps Shin, and is immediately ready to clock her. It's (societally) unwomanly, unlike how Shin expresses anger, as scheming is usually seen as the way a woman gets back at another - scheming is, Maomao also mentions quite a few times, the way of the rear court.

Shin is made entirely perfectly to thrive in the rear court and yet her cousin is the Consort. It makes you feel the true futility of efforts in the face of luck in this series because ultimately, the Emperor is also just a person who prefers voluptuous women. But he is the man who weilds the power even just through his whims. (Which, tangent, they highlight by showing us this is exactly why Jinshi cannot entertain his whims)

I enjoy this duality in their characters, and that the narrative does not shame Shin, but almost places it equal to Lihua. This makes the equality they had while growing up even more meaningful, and validates their experiences as women in a world where their status is so tied up in their child-bearing and traditionally feminine traits, yet they can lose to the whims of a man.
