the setting and my Vision:

modern au, lucathy are probably mid-20s or early 30s im thinking??? maybe kinda like the ons/fwb au where athy's like. 28 and lucas is gonna be 30

so as the lines i've quoted state, lucas is gonna be a caring uncle whose brothers have shit show marriages. a train wreck and not gonna be healthy at all (oldest has a falling apart 15 year marriage and kids were their solution of slapping tape on the problems; youngest has a hateful wife and is a doormat probably; i need a reminder on whether or not lucas is the youngest but im gonna treat him as the middle bro atm cause its the Vibes).

and yeah, he wants Nothing^tm to do with his family, but his nieces and nephews deserve to see a healthy relationship to have as an example and damn does he hate his in-laws more than his actual family

so he asks athy to be his fake wife

(i feel like it'd be funny if they signed a marriage certificate just in case lucas deals with paranoid family (when really he's just paranoid and athy's an overthinker who HELPED him get paranoid at the thought), then they got drunk, and accidentally submitted the paperwork and just straight up forgot

it becomes an inside joke among their friends after the panic of it wears off because now they're pretty much committed to the bit for the sake of lucas' nieces and nephews so now there are jokes about "where's your wife/husband" and "" etc etc)

athy's gonna constantly overthink it (and desperately trying to avoid ever mentioning it to her parents because her mom would be so disappointed that there wasnt a wedding and claude might kill lucas if he makes athy cry)

plus she's 100% gonna be ready to fite lucas's shitty relatives if they say something bad about him

side note: diana 100% thinks that lucas is athy's long-time bf so she's always joking with claude that lucas is finally gonna drop down on one knee any day now and claude, being a super big grump, is just "at least its not that alpheus kid"

little do they know that lucas became a legit in-law (although they still invite him for family dinners, and when its mentioned that athy's parents treat him as family, lucas's parents and grandparents take that as a CHALLENGE)

athy being petty by having a sickeningly sweet relationship and talking about how wonderful lucas is as a husband and partner because of how much she just straight up hates one of the sister in-laws

i'm self-indulgent, so i'm gonna have the classic "my sister in-law tried to sleep with my husband" stories

also idk if its just me but when it comes to fake dating aus (which i'm a SUCKER for) i think its a++++++++ when one of them casually goes "yknow if we were actually doing this for realsies, we'd probably be making out in a closet rn" and the other person sweating cause that sounds infinitely better than what they're doing rn

GET OUT OF HERE!! Don’t actually because this is such a cute idea!!! Before I read this I always saw Crosshair as more of a CG but THEN this request had my brain short circuit with ideas!! I absolutely love a Little who doesn’t want to regress but is loved and accepted by those around them that they start to regress without realizing it! And that’s definitely Crosshair! I decided not just to write a general Headcannons for him but him as a Little throughout the first seasons to the current season. So we see Little Crosshair before the empire, during and after. This is LONG, I think I got a little carried away!😅😅

Little! Crosshair🎯Headcannons / Storyline 🤍 (SFW)

Tags/ TW - BAD BATCH SPOILERS, mentions of clone wars & bad batch typical violence (shooting/death), classification au, accidents, cuddles, self doubt/hatred

Background on the Republic and on Regressors in the Clone Wars era:

Just like every citizen, every clone of the republic must be tested for their Classification and have it on their file. They get it right after they’ve finished all their training and their ready to be shipped out into battle. As much as the Kaminoans would like for all of the clone to be Neutrals, they have no control over it. They just hide all notes about it and tell the republic all their clones are neutrals. But the clones know otherwise. Though most of the clones are Neutrals, there are the few exceptions. It’s rare to get a Caregiver Clone, but even rarer to find a Little Clone.

The Bad Batch have been and continue to be anything but normal. So when it comes for them to get classified, the results don’t come to much of a shock. Each one test right after the other, then waits in their shared room for everyone to come back and say their results.

Hunter is the first to test and his comes back as a Caregiver. Then Tech is up and is tested as a Caregiver as well. The two are shocked at first, never expecting their classification to come to any use. Then Wrecker test and his comes back as a Little with the age of a big kid (7-9). That…wasn’t much of a shock to the team. What is a bit shock to the team is Crosshair’s classification.

Little Crosshair before the Empire & Omega :

Crosshair is the last one to test mostly because he’s the youngest. He expects, no, he knows he’s a neutral. So when he’s told otherwise he loses it. He demands the droid test him again, then again, then again. But it’s the same result every time. He’s a Little with the age of a little kid (4-6).

He starts to panic. Before he sees his brother he takes time for himself to try and calm down but he can’t. He has this stern tough guy persona to himself. What if his brothers see him differently? What if they think he’s not as capable? What will happen when he regresses? No! No, he’s never going to regress. That is not happening.

After a moment of pulling himself together and cooling his emotions, he leaves and head back to his room with the rest of the squad. Wreck is eager to hear his classification but Crosshair just shrugs him off saying he’s a neutral. Tech and Hunter share a look but don’t say anything.

Crosshair can feel it bubbling inside, almost scratching at the back of his brain to regress but he fights it. Wrecker always regresses after a long mission. Something inside of Crosshair always yearns for him to do the same with him.

Crosshair keeps his classification well hidden. No one questions Crosshair on his Neutral classification and he doesn’t regress…that is before their latest mission goes south.

Crosshair gets hurt, badly hurts. A broken leg and possibly a concussion. He hits the ground HARD. His leg hurts and his head is pounding. Wrecker picks him up and carries him back to the ship with the others. Once they’re all safe in the Marauder, Hunter and Tech realize Crosshair regressed.

Wrecker doesn’t understand what’s happening and questions it. “Why’s he acting like that?” “Because he’s regressed” Tech explains plainly. “But he’s a neutral.” Wrecker adds, but Hunter shakes his head, “He never has been. Isn’t that right Crosshair?” Crosshair just looks away as tears start to fall from his eyes.

They start to take care of him while he’s injured and regressed. The more they do, the more Crosshair realizes his regression isn’t such a bad thing after all, So the crew of the Marauder start to learn a few new things about their newly regressed squad member.

For one, Hunter is Crosshair’s favorite person. When he isn’t around Crosshair he begins to panic and look for him. It’s an unspoken truth with the Batch that when Crosshair regresses he’s always hanging around Hunter. “Hunter?” “Over here little sniper.”

Hates cutsie nicknames. Really only accepts Little sniper, Cross, and very rarely little one.

He’s a very quiet Little as opposed to Wrecker who is a very loud energetic Little.

Though he is very quiet, he does have a voice when it comes to something he doesn’t like. He is extremely stubborn. (More below on this)

Wrecker loves to take the lead and guide Crosshair to play along with their crazy games. He’s an older headspace than him so he loves to be big brother.

Whenever Crosshair is upset, Wrecker will bring him Lula to make him. As much as he doesn’t want to admit it, it does make him better.

Crosshair is super cuddly when he’s regressed. But you can’t force him, he just walks over to either Hunter or Tech while they’re relaxing in their bunk, doesn’t say a word, and just snuggled up beside them.

Tech loves to read to him, it always seems to relax him and sometimes it makes him fall asleep with all the knowledge.

Crosshair throws tantrums often. He is a fussy Little. When something doesn’t go his way, he doesn’t want to do something, or something wasn’t what he wanted he will throw a huge tantrum.

He also fights most if not all of Hunter & Tech’s rules. They’re getting a bit tired of his constant rebellion to their rules but nonetheless their as patient as they can be with him, knowing he’s probably lashing out because he needs some attention and is too shy to ask for it.

In and out of his regression his brothers love and respect him. They don’t look down at him for being a Regressor and they certainly don’t underestimate him.

No toothpicks when Crosshair is regressed, as it’s too dangerous. Instead the Batch find him an alternative in the way of chewable necklaces and teethers. Pacifiers are labeled too babyish by Crosshair so the alternatives make him feel a lot better.

When Echo joins the team, Crosshair doesn’t regress for a while around him. Nervous of the new Caregiver on the ship, though he’d never admit it.

When he does eventually regress, Echo is extremely kind to Crosshair. Whenever he get fussy or is on the verge of a tantrum, Echo seems to have the magic touch or the magic saying that starts to settle him down. “Why don’t we go look at the stars outside?” “I don’t want to!” “Oh, well I guess I’ll just go out by myself and look at the starts. *sigh* I’ll just be so lonely.” He leaves the ship to look at the stars and find Crosshair beside him a minute later.

After their mission with the Jedi during order 66, they meet Omega. And at the same time as meeting Omega, Crosshair begins to have terrible headaches. Usually when he has a headache it turns into him regressing but this one is doing the opposite. Plus now with Omega, he can’t help but feel a slight twinge of jealousy for her.

They learn that Omega is a part of their squad. But not only that, she’s also a Little same headspace as Wrecker.

Crosshair fights with the team against being on the opposite side of the Empire. Deep down he just wants things to be the same as they were before.

When they are captured again, Crosshair hold his head in pain. Whatever was going on, Omega seemed to sense it. She takes a seat by him and takes his hand in his. “I know this isn’t your fault.” Maybe this isn’t his fault. Before he’s decided whether he was going to ask her about it or just roll his eyes, the Empire goes to take him away.

“Ct-9904 you’re coming with us.” Hunter is the first to stand up and block them from taking Crosshair but he is punched in the stomach. Crosshair is dragged out of his cell, casting one last worrying look to his squad.

Little Crosshair during the Empire (Season 1)

The Empire begins experimenting on him to keep him as their “good soldier.” In doing so his regression starts to fade away for him for the time being. He doesn’t feel the usual pull to regress like he did before.

His brothers leaving him behind doesn’t hit him at first. But when the realization and loneliness hit him, it’s like a train. Late at night in their old barracks, Crosshair lays awake in his bed. He longs for Hunter, Tech or even Echo to come and comfort him. But now as the Empire’s perfect soldier, he forced himself to push it down.

(The Reunion s1 ep 8) When he gets injured by the cruiser engine and is medically evaluated off the planet he involuntarily regresses for the first time since joining the empire. Something happens with him getting burns to the side of his head. It makes his chip or his motives to stay with the Empire wavier.

His injuries brings him back to when he first regressed with his squad. Except now he was surrounded by medical droids. He freaks out but is only restrained more by the droids until they finish the proper treatment to the burns on the side of his head. He has an accident while they treat him, something that has only happen on extremely few occasions. The embarrassment eats away at him.

Once treated he is sent to his barracks to heal. This time everything feels different. He cries as he sit in his bed all alone. He longs for Hunter, or Tech, or Echo, or even Wrecker to make him feel better.

(War-Mantle s1 ep14 & Return to Kamino s1 ep15) When Hunter is captured by the empire, Crosshair makes it a point to be in charge of his arrest. While he acts sassy on the outside, Hunter sees right through it all. When Crosshair confronts Hunter in his cell Hunter asks him about it, “Crosshair…when was the last time you-.” “I DON’T! Not anymore.”

(Kamino Lost s1 ep16) Capturing Hunter was the biggest part of his plan. Why? So the rest of the squad could come and get him. With everyone back together he offers them to join the empire once more. But again, they refuse. Crosshair lashes out. Hunter and Crosshair fight which results in Hunter taking down Crosshair.

During their escape out of Kamino, Omega and Crosshair have a chance to chat. She really just wants to connect and be an older sister to him, being a Little herself. But he scoffs her off, choosing to self isolate himself rather than make friends with Omega. There’s also something inside of him that feels a bit of jealousy when he sees Omega around the others, especially Hunter.

Crosshair save Omega from drowning. He looks around at the guns surrounding him. He wasn’t going to shoot Omega, he was saving her life! But he’s done too much damage and that shows in the way Wrecker, Tech and Echo look at him.

They offer him a choice to join them again, no questions asked. There’s something deep down inside of Crosshair that’s screaming at him to join his squad again. But his stubborn need to be a good solider wins over and once again his squad leaves him. As they fly away he can’t help but let a few tears fall.

Little Crosshair during the Empire (Season 2)

The Empire left him on that platform in the ruins of Kamino for thirty two rotations, left to starve.

By this time back with Empire he is starting to notice more and more clone question the Empire’s intentions. The first of whom that really gets Crosshairs attention is Commander Cody.

It’s like a breath of fresh air to work with Cody. But even he could see that a good soldier like Cody is even questioning the Empire’s intentions. This starts to have Crosshair thinking about the Empire’s intentions for him.

After Cody disappears, Crosshair continues to work for the Empire but his treatment gets worse and worse. The stormtroopers disrespect his abilities, he eats alone and is isolated from everything expect work.

At night Crosshair stays awake, curled in a ball crying. His regression is becoming a big issue for him. He can’t stop feeling the pull to fully regress but with how the Empire is treating clones he scared he’ll be disregarded if he did.

(The Outpost s2 ep 12) Everything changes when he’s assigned to the Outpost. There he meet another clone named Mayday who reminds him so much of Hunter. It brings that Little feeling deep down inside. It doesn’t help that Mayday is also a Caregiver and can sense that Crosshair isn’t the neutral he says he is.

When they go out to retrieve the items stolen by raiders they come to find that all their hard work has led them to just retrieve new armor for the stormtroopers that plan on replacing them.

During the battle to get the supplies back, Mayday pushes Crosshair out of the way, saving his life but injuring himself. Though he insists on Crosshair leaving him, Crosshair doesn’t abandon him there. Instead he helps him go back to the Outpost.

There were moments spent huddled next to one another as the snow blew back and forth. As injured as Mayday was, he always tried to comfort Crosshair who regressed on and off because of his worrying about Mayday. “It’s okay Crosshair, we’ll make it. Just stay close to me. I’ve got you.”

Crosshair takes his arm and wrap his around his shoulders for support. Both to support Mayday as he walks and for the comfort of keeping him close.

Eventually they do make it back to the base. Crosshair lays Mayday down for a minute as the Lieutenant comes over to the two. He begs him to get a medic for Mayday, tears falling down his face. But the Lieutenant mocks Crosshair, saying how weak and expendable the clones are and how angry he is that they came back empty handed. When Crosshair looks to Mayday, he’s passed away.

Crosshair losses it. Everything he felt about the Empire fades away. He realizes the mistake his made and more than anything wants to be back with his squad. But he’s stuck here, with the Empire. He begin to cry, holding onto Mayday hand as the Lieutenant turns away.

There’s only one way out and that’s the option he goes for. He takes his gun and shoot the man. There’s a sense of relief that washes over him. But that relief immediately turns to exhaustion. He crumbles to the ground as storm troopers run over and passes out.

When Crosshair awakes he’s taken prisoner by Hemlock and Emerie. They inform him that they’re going to use him to capture Omega. It’s with this knowledge Crosshair sets out to do one last good deed to redeem a bit of his old self.

He breaks out and goes to the communications board where he sends out an encrypted message to the Bad Batch, “Plan 88. You have to hide. They’re after…..”

The last part of the message doesn’t go through. Gas fills the room and Crosshair collapses. Hemlock walks through the gas as it doesn’t affect him. He tells Crosshair of the mistake he’s made and how he’ll pay for it. A single tear falls from Crosshair’s eye before he passes out.

His punishment is being thrown into a cell, forced to be subject to different test both of his defective qualities and his Little classification.

When Omega is captured, she find Crosshair strapped to a table unconscious. At least the two Littles of the Batch are reunited.

Little Crosshair is back with the Batch (Season 3)

Crosshair has lost hope of ever escaping Tantiss. He has his usual schedule of trying to train him to be some brain washed assassin (doesn’t work on him), then he’s experimented on and then thrown into his cell. Most nights he’s alone, left to cry. But soon, Omega starts to visit him.

At first he tries to steer her away from him. Saying mean things so she’ll leave him alone and escape herself. He feels in some twisted way he deserve this punishment. But unlike everyone who he’s felt abandoned him, Omega never gives up on him. She visits him every night.

Some nights he’s regressed, others he’s not. Omega stays with him through and throughout. She loves his little side, though it’s mostly just him crying and holding her hand through the cell door. The small comfort is needed.

They break out! Omega takes the lead getting them out of the prison while Crosshair mans the guns. He feels comfortable not making the decisions and instead letting his sister do it for them. Though nowadays his shooting isn’t as good as it used to be thanks to all the experiments to him.

Once free they crash land, steal a ship and travel to meet Hunter and Wrecker. The whole adventure brings Crosshair very close to Omega who looks after him like Wrecker used to. He now protects her at all cost.

When they land, Omega is first to run and hug Hunter and Wrecker. The happy reunion is ruined by Crosshair as he also steps down off the ship. Too much betrayal has caused their relationship to splinter. It makes his heart sink

(The Return Season 3 ep 5) Back with the Batch and back to somewhat safe place. Crosshair tries to find his place back in the group again. But he knows Wrecker and Hunter don’t trust him at all. So he isolated himself from the group, looking to instead fix his shaking hand. The only one who’s close to him is still Omega. She urges him to talk to Hunter who has given him the cold shoulder.

When Echo arrives they realize they need to go to an imperial base to help unlock a datapad from Tantiss and free the clones. The only issue, this isn’t just any imperial base, this is The Outpost.

Wrecker is kind enough to give him his old armor back. He steps inside the Marauder and changes. Looking in the mirror he sees a hint of his old self again. The hope makes his heart stop for a second.

Walking outside brings back all the memories of Mayday, something that wrenches his heart.

He lashes out at Hunter throughout their entire time at the Outpost. It brings back old memories of when Crosshair would deny regressing, throw a tantrum, eventually break down and regress with Hunter.

The only thing is, Hunter is not being as kind as he used to be. Crosshair hasn’t exactly been kind to him and the rest of the Batch. So it’s all expected.

There’s small insults thrown here and there between Hunter and Crosshair. All with Omega and Echo trying to get the two to talk to one another, knowing that’s how it would fix everything between them.

When they enter the Outpost, the team works on the datapad while Crosshair slips away, looking through the outpost, remembering the last time he was there.

Out of the corner of his eye he spot a group of clone helmets and in the middle sits Mayday’s helmet. He immediately goes over and fixes the helmets, putting Maydays in the middle to honor him. A stray tear falls from his eye as he stares at the helmet. He quickly wipes it away, unaware Hunter had been watching him.

But slowly but surely Crosshair and Hunter get on each other nerves to the point of having an all out argument with one another. Hunter questions Crosshair’s loyalty to the squad and Crosshair just lashes out, saying things only to hurt Hunter.

Their argument is interrupted by a giant monster! (Of course) During the mission to get rid of this giant monster, Crosshair and Hunter work together for the first time in forever. Crosshair saves Hunter’s life by merely getting eaten himself.

After that they just sit in the snow, breathing heavy next to one another. They look over and silently there’s a difference in the air. All the anger all the heartache is gone. What’s left is what they were before, brothers, Caregiver and Little.

They walk back to the squad. Wrecker runs over and hugs the two together in a group hug like he used to do. Echo smiles at Omega saying “See? They always work it out. And this time Hunter’s not bleeding from one of Crosshair’s tantrums. I’d say it’s a win win.”

Once they start packing up to leave, Hunter and Crosshair get a moment to talk to one another. “Hunter, I…I thought I knew what I was getting into with the Empire. I thought I was being a good soldier.” Tears threaten to spill from his eyes. It’s all too much. Now that he’s in Hunter and the squad’s good side. He feels the need to regress once more.

Hunter steps up, walking over to Crosshair, “Nobody really understood what was happening back then.”

“I’ve done thing, I’ve made mistakes.” The tears that threatened to spill start falling as soon as he turns and looks at Hunter.

Hunter decides to clear the space between them. He brings Crosshair close and wrap him in a hug, something he hasn’t had in forever, “I have regrets too, Crosshair. All we can do is keep trying to be better. And who knows? There just might be hope for us yet. It’s okay my little sniper. You’re home now.”

Crosshair just cries and cries into Hunter’s shoulder. So much being built up over time that just finally being let out. After a moment Crosshair lifts his head and Hunter wipes the remaining tears away. “I already told the squad, tonight you and I are going to spend some quality time together. Sound good?” Crosshair nods, taking his hand and being led onto the ship.

The night feels like a dream to Crosshair. He’s finally able to fully regress and feel safe doing so. He cuddles close to Hunter and never leaves his side. With him, his old chewable necklace that getting pretty worn out.

(Infiltration s3 ep 6) Things remain pretty peaceful until a call from Rex comes through. The Batch are brought to give anymore information about Tantiss to Rex.

Crosshair meets Howzer again, who rightly so, doesn’t like him. Hunter sticking up for him brings a sense of warmth and happiness to him. His brothers truly accept him again.

But seeing the Assassin clone has Crosshair’s heart stop all together. This is bad, really bad. He fears not only for his own safety but mostly for his sister safety who the Empire desperately wants. After everything the two have been through together Crosshair couldn’t be without his big sister.

(Extraction s3 ep7) Running away from the assassin is a daunting task. This clone is good and Crosshair’s shaking hand isn’t helping. He still is useful but not as good as he hoped to be.

Once outside Crosshair check up on Omega, “you good?” “Un-huh.” “Got your crossbow?” “Yup.” “Sure you can carry those supplies?” “Yes.” “Stay close. It’s easy to get lost in this terrain.” Omega smiles but rolls her eyes, “You’re as bad as Hunter.” “Oh, I’m much worse.”

As they journey through the forest to get to the pick up location with Echo, Crosshair can sense the clone assassin is close. He turns to go alone, hoping to draw the assassin away from Omega.

The assassin seems almost mad at Crosshair for not being one of the assassins like himself. As the fight goes on, Crosshair is starting to slip up. The assassin hold his underwater and he struggles to breathe. But thankfully the rest of the team gets there to save Crosshair before he drowns or worse, falls down the giant water fall like the assassin did.

Hunter and Omega rush over as Crosshair coughs up water. Both the Caregiver and the Little are worried about him.

Finally they are about to be picked up when an old clone commander Wolffe tries to stop them. But after Rex’s speech, he has a change of heart. Crosshair notices how more clones, like Cody are beginning to question the order like all of them.

Once saved by Echo and heading to Padu, Wrecker and Omega begin to regress and play around the ship. And despite it all, Crosshair joins them, letting the worries of the missions and what happen tonight.

(Bad Territory s3 ep8) Hunter and Omega worry about Crosshair’s shaking hand. He tried to hide it from all the Caregivers and even Omega but everyone begins to notice it.

So while away on a mission Hunter instruct Omega to have Crosshair check it out. Sadly though it isn’t a medical issue. It’s because of the severe anxiety and PTSD he has since Tantiss.

Despite being against it at first, Crosshair follows Omega along and listens to his older sister as she teaches him how to meditate. At first he thinks it stupid and is about to walk away but she takes his hand in his.

With a deep breath he closes his eyes and focuses. And without him noticing, his hand stops shaking.

(The Harbinger s3 ep 9) Crosshair and Hunter work as the ultimate Dad team duo against Ventress who the don’t trust or want Omega to be around.

They work extremely well together. Despite getting their butts handed to them by Ventress they both see that their main priority is to keep Omega safe. That to them is what matters most.

In the end, Ventress warns them about Padu, saying it’s not safe. While it shouldn’t bother Crosshair, it eats away at him all night. Maybe they should leave? Maybe they should hide? He wakes Hunter up and explains his worries. “No use in staying up all night worry Cross, here. I’ll protect you and Omega tonight.”

It seems Crosshair was beat to Hunter’s bed by Omega who’s cuddle against his side. Old Crosshair would’ve been jealous. But now? Now he feels happy to have both of them around. He snuggles with the two. Happy to be protected by Hunter and happy to protect Omega.

(Point of No Return, s3 ep11) While Crosshair hasn’t been on Padu for as long as the others, he feels a bit sad to see it go. He sticks with Hunter, helping to load supplies onto the ship before the take off.

Just as they’re making their last trip BOOM! The Marauder, their home, explodes. Hunter, Omega and Crosshair run to the docks to find an unconscious and injured Wrecker. Crosshairs heart stops seeing his brother so injured.

But they’ve got bigger issues. They look to the skies and see an Imperial cruiser entering the airspace. He subconsciously goes closer to Omega, knowing that they’re here for her.

The three take off, trying to figure out a plan. Hunter suggests Crosshair stay with Omega while he finds a ship for them. Crosshair happily agrees, afraid of being away from Omega. The two run away, hiding with Wrecker’s unconscious body as AZ works on him.

Crosshair can see it in Omega’s eyes and on her face. She’s guilty. The people of the planet are being hurt and she feels as though she is to blame for it all. Crosshair wishes he could say something to reassure her it’s not her fault but he doesn’t say anything.

They watch as Hunter’s plan fails. He falls into the ocean. Crosshair grabs a view finder frantically and searches the ocean. His heart doesn’t start pumping again until he sees Hunter’s head pop up from the water. “He’s okay.” He says both to Omega and to himself.

Back inside Omega stops Crosshair and tells him she’s going to surrender herself. Crosshair is immediately against it, insisting they stick to Hunter’s plan. But Omega has made up her mind. She doesn’t want to see another suffer because of her.

Her plan is simple, hide a tracker on her and have Crosshair shoot a tracker on the ship. That way they can track her to Tantiss and they’ll be able to save the other clones, Crosshair is not confident on the mission. He doesn’t agree with it but Omega made her mind up. She’s doing it.

So when Omega surrenders herself they find her tracker, leaving it up to Crosshair to be the one to put the tracker on the ship.

Storm troopers are everywhere. With only seconds to shoot the tracker he’s attacked by troopers. He stops them and then takes his position again, but this time the ship is taking off.

He shoots and…he misses. The tracker lands in the ocean and the ship takes off with Omega with no way of tracking her at all.

Crosshair just watches the ship leave, in shock and in anguish. Tears fall from his face under his helmet as the ship gets small and small before disappearing from view. He failed them, he failed her.

How will be ever face Hunter and Wrecker who don’t know? How will be able to live with himself?

HI!!! Welcome! I'm quite the nervous wreck sometimes, so I apologize ahead of time if your interactions with me are awkward. I got into MOTHER around July of 2019 when I was 15. It has brought out a lot of joy into me and has shaped the way that I am today! I've been creating content for MOTHER since August 2019, but most of it is private and archived. I have gone under multiple aliases, but Tanehineri is the one that has stuck and resonated the most, being the Japanese name for Tanetane island. The 'j' in my name is actually supposed to be pronounced the way you would a 'j' in Spanish, actually!

While MOTHER is no longer a main interest, I am not afraid to say it's my special interest! Whenever I am running out of things to think or create about, the series is there to give me something to occupy my time. I have multiple takes and headcanons, and I'm always open to hear and share my interpretations of these games with other people, so don't be afraid to ask me for my takes on certain aspects!

“Huh.”

“What?” Annabella asked as she turned to look at her brother.

“M’gann just messaged us asking if we’d like to join her and Wally to a camp out.” Dick said as he looked at his phone.

“Five bucks says he was trying to ask her out.” Annabella laughed then turned to her dad who was sitting by the batcomputer. “Can I go dad?”

Bruce turned to look at them.

“Who’s all going?”

“Looks like the whole team.” Said Dick as he looked through the message.

“Please papi?” Annabella asked giving him a hug.

“Make sure you pack what you need.”

“Yay! Come on Dick I’ll race you.”

Annabella had to make a mental note to get the surveillance photo of Wally’s face when he saw the whole group gathered there for the camp out. They set out and got the tents set up.

“Are you sure you should be setting up the fire?” M’gann asked.

“I got this.” Annabella said as she piled the wood. “My dad showed me how to make one. Besides the guys are busy with the tents.”

By the time the guys were done Annabella had the fire at a pretty decent size.

“This is fun.” She said as she roasted a marshmallow. “It’s been a long time since we’ve gone camping.”

“Is this all you guys do?” Superboy asked. “Sleep in flimsy things called tents and sit around the fire?”

“Yeah that’s pretty much about it. So if you feel like heading home I can sit out here with Ms. M… alone.” Wally said with a pout, Annabella elbowed him.

“You’re about as subtle as a train wreck, you know that?” Dick said making Annabella snicker.

“You’re not going to catch any fish unless you go fishing dude.” Wally retorded but turned back to look at Kaldur. “Sorry, no offense.”

“No.” Said Dick going back to what Superboy had asked. “Usually you sit around the campfire and tell stories.”

“Oh!” M’gann perked up. “I would love to hear your story Kaldur. Could you tell us how you became Aqualad?”

“I was thinking more of a ghost story type of thing but I guess whatever..” Dick muttered and Annabella elbowed him.

“Shh.” She scolded as she turned to look at Kaldur.

“Oh, I suppose I could do that if you do not think it will be too boring.” Kaldur smiled shyly.

“Not at all! I would love to hear it!”

“Me too.” Said Annabella giving her brother a warning look to not speak.

Kaldur nodded and began his story. Annabella’s eyes widened when he mentioned how he joined the arm at 12. She turned to look at her brother he was just 9 when he started becoming Robin. She herself was just 10 yet those two had already been through so much. Shaking her head she continued to listen smiling at the end.

“Huh you’re a bit reckless, aren't you.” She joked and caught just the faintest tint of blush on his cheek.

“Wow, So you wanted to be Aqualad?” M’gann asked.

“Yes, the opportunity arose. I could think of another path.”

“Yeah? If you think he wanted to be Aqualad so bad? Let me tell you about how I got started.”

“Ugh.” Annabella groaned. “Not this story again.”

“Shh.” Dick said mocking her.

As Wally began telling his story Annabella mouthed every word he said.

“Yeah. We’re all thrilled you’re so speed-capable.” Dick said as Wally finished his story.

“What’s the matter jealous?” Wally retorted.

“Yeah right! Jealous of you?”

Annabella pouted. “I wanna hear more stories now shut it.”

“Oh, can you tell us about how you got started, Robin?” M’gann asked.

“Ha!” Wally snorted. “Are you kidding me? Bats won’t even let him tell you his real name! I mean you’ll probably get a better origin story out of supey over here.”

“Wally if you don’t shut up I’m gonna stab you.” Annabella threatened him with her s’mores stick but turned to look at Superboy. “Do you really have no memories before they got you out?”

“I have some memories from the Gnomes.” Superboy began to explain how he only remembered the information they gave him. How he only began to think after he was out of his pod. How he only thought about destroying Superman.

“Robin did you hear what he said?” Wally asked.

“Huh what?” Her brother mumbled.

Annabella looked over at her brother frowning. You okay? She mouthed as she felt a familiar pain flutter away from him.

He nodded and they went back to conversation.

“He just said he wants to take down Superman!” Wally shouted.

“Are you serious? Superboy?” M’gann asked.

“It’s how I feel sometimes. What if that’s why I was created? What if that was the only reason I was created?” Superboy questioned.

“That’s not possible.” M’gann said.

“Yeah! Look at all the good stuff you’ve done so far!” Wally piped up.

“What would be the possible reasoning behind this thinking?” Kaldur asked.

“I just feel… I dont know what I feel. Sometimes… thoughts happen.” Superboy tried to explain.

“Those would be silly thoughts! You should put them out of your head.”

“He does have a valid point. We really dont know anything about what they did to him yet.”

“We know you were made to replace Superman but we never questioned how that would be. But you can always choose what to be.” Annabella said getting up and walking up to Superboy. “You may have been made for a reason. But your out now. You can take what your dreams mean however you want but you’re free to choose what to do.”

Superboy sighed. “Thanks.”

She led Superboy back to the fire and handed him a s’more.

“Hey! You haven’t told us about your story. What’s the dealio with you, M’gann?” Wally asked after a few moments of silence.

Annabella listened to M’ganns story but began to frown half way through it. Something about her story didn’t feel right, she was lying. Annabella wasn’t quite sure what she was lying about. Maybe she was just trying to make it seem more exciting than it really was. Annabella shook off the thought as M’gann finished her story.

“We’ll I don't know about you guys, but I think I’ve had one s’more too many. I’m going to hit the old sleeping bag.” Dick said getting up.

“”Yes! This has been such a wonderful evening but I am excited to sleep in a tent.” Said M’gann.

“I’m right behind you.” Wally said following M’gann but Annabella stood in front of him placing her hands on his chest.

“No you’re not.” She said as she pushed him towards a different tent.

“Hey, next time, you think we should go camping for real, like at a real camping place instead of just our own backyard?” Wally said slowly putting his weight on top of her.

“Wally I’ll punt you into the tent and you know I can.” Annabella mumbled almost lifting Wally off the ground.

“You don't strike me as the outdoorsy type. Tonight were sleeping about five feet from the cave entrance, maybe next time we can try down the hills bit.” Dick said chuckling a bit.

The three of them got into their tent and Annabella grabbed her clothes and burrowed into her sleeping bag.

“Why are you two so against M’gann and I becoming a thing?” Wally asked as he changed.

“You do realize she is not into you.” Annabella said from under her sleeping bag.

“I think she just doesn’t know Earth flirting techniques.” Wally shrugged.

“You keep thinking that.” Dick said.

“Coast clear?” Annabella asked.

“You’re good.” Said Wally and Annabella poked her head out. “Really? Justice league pjs?”

“Says the guy who owns a pair of Superman boxers.”

“When did you see his boxers?!?!” Dick nearly shrieked, Annabella looked at her brother.

“They were literally sticking out of his duffel bag how am I not supposed to see them.”

Dick turned and glared at Wally.

“Hey its not like she saw me in them.”

“First ew. Second not like there be much to see.”

“Rude.”

Annabella took her sunglasses off and grabbed her backpack shoving her clothes in and placing the glasses in their case.

“You think Bman is ever gonna let you come without the glasses?” Wally asked as he got into his sleeping bag.

“God I hope so. I can't believe you’ve made everyone call me Bells.” Annabella glared at Wally as she got back into her sleeping bag.

“Hey at least it was Bells and not…”

“Your utter that name out loud and I will summon a snake into your sleeping bag.” Annabella warned glaring at Wally.

“You two go to sleep.” Dick groaned as he snuggled into his sleeping bag.

“Baby.” Annabella muttered as she got comfortable and went to sleep.

Annabella groaned, she had forgotten why she hadn’t gone camping in a while. Rubbing her eyes she quietly got up. She had to fight back a laugh when she turned and saw her brother dropped across Wally both of them snoring their heads off. Taking a quick picture she got up and changed for the day.

Yawning she walked slowly out of the tent with her backpack. Kaldur or Superboy must’ve put out the fire last night so she got it back up so she could brew some water. As she waited for the pot to get hot she dug into her bag and took out a bag of seeds. Taking a handful she tossed it into the dirt.

FOOD! The birds shouted making Annabella wince.

A small flock covered the ground pecking at the seeds.

You’re welcome. Annabella mumbled tiredly.

She received a small chorus of thank you’s.

She threw some more seeds before getting a cup and pouring the water in along with instant coffee and creamer. Taking a sip she sighed as she looked up at the sky, seeing the orange and pinks bleed away from the blue.

Now that’s a cub I have not seen in years.

Annabella turned and saw a brown bear looking at her. Annabella squealed.

“Sasha!! Is that you?!” She shouted as she ran to the bear and jumped on top of the bear.

Oh little cub you have grown so much! Sasha replied ducking down so Annabella could climb properly on her. Oh, and who are these people?

Annabella looked up to find Superboy and Kaldur half dressed and in defense mode outside of their tent however they stared at her and the bear confused as if not sure what form of action to perform.

“Oh, the one with the tattoos is Kaldur and the one next to him is Superboy. Guys this is Sasha.” Annabella smiled patting the bears head.

“Are you okay?” Kaldur asked carefully eyeing the bear.

He does not trust me. Sasha pouted.

“I know, its okay.” Annabella said though the guys weren’t sure who she was talking to. “Sasha wont hurt me guys I’ve known her for a long time.”

“What’s going on?” M’gann yawned as she got out of her tent.

Wally and her brother walked out of their tent soon after and passed to look at the scene.

“You really can't last one day outdoors whiteout making a new friend can you?” Wally said laughing.

“For your information Sasha is an old friend.”

“Would someone please explain what's going on?” M’gann asked eyeing the bear Annabella was casually perched on.

“Everyone this is Sasha, Sasha they will be living in the cave form now on.”

Oh they are hero’s as well?

“Yes.”

No one has lived in the cave for such a long time, I thought it was not safe.

“It wasn’t, but no one knows of this team therefore they wont be discovered.” Annabella explained.

“Wait, are you talking to the bear?” Superboy asked making Annabella looked up the team and blush.

“Oh, yeah… surprise I can talk to animals.” Annabella said raising her hands up in a tada manner.

Superboy and Kaldur blinked before turning to look at M’gann.

“What are you staring at me for?” She asked.

“Well you are the mind reader.” Superboy shrugged.

“Yes but… animal minds are much more difficult. Your mind must be very special.” M’gann said.

“Thanks?”

“Yeah its all cool and stuff until you only hear half of the conversations because she fails to state what the animal is saying out loud.” Wally explained.

Little cub.

“Yes?”

Do you have any food?

“Oh of course.”

“Like that.” Wally said gesturing towards Annabella making her stick her young out at him.

“She’s hungry.” She simply said as she slid off the bear and went back to her bag and began digging around. “I know I packed some meat in here. Ah here it is.”

She took out a tightly wrapped package. And began unraveling it.

“You seriously brought packages meat with you?” Dick asked.

“I wasn’t sure which animals would be here so I came prepared for everything.” Annabella shrugged as she tossed a price of meat to Sasha.

Thank you, boys food.

Annabella gasped. “Oh my god you have cubs?”

Sure enough there little cubs came trotting out from the tree line towards the pice of meat.

Would you like to hold them?

“Yes, come on guys you wanna pet a baby bear?” Annabella asked as she got closer to pet one.

“Is it safe?” Kaldur asked.

“Yes they won’t attack.” Annabella said.

The team slowly gathered around and took turns petting the different bears. Sasha looked curiously at M’gann and sniffed her.

Is something wrong with this one? Sasha asked making Annabella laugh.

“No she’s just a Martian, she’s not from earth.” Annabella explained when Sasha cocked her head at the word Martian.

“Huh?” M’gann asked.

“Sasha just wanted to know why you look different, she thought you were sick.” Annabella explained before quickly grabbing one of the cubs. “Hey you do not bite people.”

But he smells like fishies. The cub pouted.

“I don't care if he smells like fish you don't bite.” Annabella scolded.

“I was unaware I had that scent.” Kaldur frowned.

“You don't, you smell more like ocean breeze. He probably just got a fainter smell of the fish from the sea.”

The cub resorted to licking Kaldurs arm.

“So how does it work?” M’gann asked petting the cub that was sitting on her lap.

“Um, not entirely sure. I can just sorta hear them talking in my head. But to me it just sounds like a normal conversation I would have with another person.”

“Can you speaks to all wildlife?” Kaldur asked petting the cub that was still licking him.

“Just about, cats, dogs, birds, snakes, lizards, monkeys, etc. Even marine life like fishes, sharks dolphins whales. If I try hard enough I can sorta talk to bugs but ugh those give me headaches.” Annabella explained as she poked the fire.

“How long have you had your powers?” Superboy asked.

“Awhile.” Annabella mumbled catching the look her brother was giving her.

“How did you get your powers?” M’gann asked.

“Ah, it's nothing interesting really. One day we went camping and I wandered into the woods, the next thing I knew I woke up hearing the entire forest in my head.”

“Why didn’t you mention this last night when we were telling stories?” M’gann asked Annabella could sense she was still intrigued.

“You never asked.” Annabella shrugged.

“Well to be honest I think it would make more sense for you to be  robin instead of your brother.” Said M’gann. “How come you are not a sidekick?”

“Overprotective dad.” Superboy guessed.

“That’s part of the reason, also being a sidekick just isn’t my thing. Ive grown up with superhero’s all my life I’ve seen what that life can lead to. I know the good it can do but at the same time its just not me… at least… not yet.”

“You think you’ll join us one day?” M’gann asked making Annabella glance at her brother.

“I don't know yet.” Annabella sighed. “All I know is that I do want to make a difference I just don't know what that is yet.”

Always the big dreamer, Sasha said licking Annabella’s face.

Annabella laughed and rubbed the slobber off her face. Suddenly Wally's stomach let out a loud grumble making everyone stare at him.

“What? I haven’t eaten since I’ve woken up.” He whined.

“We should probably head inside to get some breakfast.” Said M’gann.

“Good idea.” Said Kaldur.

“Okay, stay safe Sasha we’re gonna go inside now. I promise I’ll come out to visit you.” Annabella patted the bears head.

You take care too little cub, I’m glad you have some friends now.

Anabella smiled as she rubbed Sasha’s head and hugged the cubs goodbye.

Noctis looked to his Shield as if for the first time since hearing Insomnia fall. The usual hard set features on his face were almost crestfallen as the other looked out the window. He had his book on his lap but it laid closed. It Gladio would often read on long trips. It was almost like he was holding it only to fidget with something. Ignis turned off the radio, keeping his eyes on the road but his eyes flickered in the mirror at the older male. “Would you prefer a different station?” Gladio needed time. “It’s. . . whatever Noct and Prompto want. I just don’t wanna listen to that anymore.” The rest of the drive to the haven was silent. No one knew what to say and for the first time, Gladio didn’t blame them. He knew the moment when he read that newspaper. He sounded harsh to the others, not taking time to mourn. Gladio was on high alert, going numb to make it through until they were safe. Call it training, protecting himself--- whatever it was, it just happened. He had to be strong for all of them. Especially for Noctis who was a wreck about his father. It wasn’t until they settled down for the night, did he finally call Iris back. The conversation was quiet for the most of it but--- “---- We can’t even go back and bring his. ..” Body. Iris wants to say body. “He deserves to be with mom.” “I know.” “I feel so stupid. I’m scared.” And for the first time, it comes out soft, almost as if he didn’t mean for it too. He’s scared. He wants to go back home and see his dad. See his home as beautiful as he left it. He wants it. He needs it. “Gladdy.. . me too.” “Stay safe.” “You, too. I’m here if you need me.” And with that, Gladio hung up, dropping the phone beside him. And he covered his face, as if someone would see and cried. He wanted to get angry, scream and fight back and there was nothing to do now. It was over. It was out of his hands. So he cried--- sitting on the ground like some kid just kicked dust in his eyes. And Gladio felt arms around his shoulders, squeezing him tight. “Hey, big guy. I got you.” And Gladio wanted to fight it, not give in to the affection. Prompto’s voice was so calming, and it would be so easy to fade into it. And as much as he wanted to fight against it---- he didn’t. He just continued to break, curling up in a tight ball. Prompto moved with him, clinging to him. He never once let go. He laid his face against his shoulder and whispered calming words. It was so ironic that the one that he hadn’t known since childhood was the one that was comforting him. Gladio didn’t know whether that was ironic or a sign but---- whether it was. . . it was needed. He’d have to thank Prompto sometime. And that thank you happened to be something Prompto had seen in a store while they were traveling. Gladio left it on the blond’s side of the tent when he left to go for a jog that morning. They never talked about it but Prompto never left that stupid chocobo plush anywhere. They shared looks sometimes, but then Prompto would always change the subject. He was a good guy. Gladio was thankful. They tended to give each other gifts, as if to one up each other. It became a contest. It was childish but it was always worth it to see the look on the other’s face. Gladio was quite impressed that Prompto went to the next level, and even once brought a hundred cup noodles to stack in a small bed in the tent. Ignis was not pleased with how wreckless the gil was spent but it did give them something instead of burnt toast to eat when things got bad. So it was only made sense when Iris got a letter with a familiar weight that she knew all too well from being a hunter. The panic on her face as she opened the envelope and see the words “Gladio would want you to have these” scribbled in terrible handwriting, signed with Prompto’s usual signature and flare. A shaking hand pulled out what she knew was there. The dog tags clicked together and sparkled almost in the sunrise. “He wanted you to have these before they set off. Told me to give you these at dawn.” Dustin spoke as Iris began to break down in the rays of sun.

Newt flips the newspaper to the next page with a flick of his wrist, mind wandering from the headlines about marketplace prices and soaring numbers of vehicle purchases, gaze drifting to the wall awash in warm streams of flickering golds and ambers. The fireplace next to him hisses and pops, warming his right side, filling the room with the comforting smell of burning wood as normal New York murmurs dance up and in through the open window nearby.

An ache develops in his hip, the consequence of sitting in the same position for two hours, so Newt shifts, eliciting a soft groan from the worn armchair he’s chosen as a nest for the night. His eyes droop shut, but he forces them back open, glancing at the front door again, waiting for it to creak open, waiting for it to allow you in. When the door remains firmly closed, Newt lets out a soft sigh and folds the newspaper in half, setting it on his lap and settling himself in to wait for you. There’s no point in bothering to read news he has no interest in.

A half hour later, long after the moon finished her slow crawl into the sky, you stumble through the door, huge smile spilling across your features, wrinkling the skin around your eyes and crinkling your nose and for a moment, Newt’s heart melts. Merlin, he loves that grin.

But when you spot him, it fades, and Newt’s own chest drops. “Hey, Newt, what are you doing up?” You reach down casually to pluck off a shoe. “You didn’t need to stay up for me.”

Newt watches you, examines you, eyes running down the side of your neck, searching for any marks as he murmurs. “It’s quite all right, love. I wouldn’t want you to be in any trouble without me.”

You pull off your other shoe and toss it aside. “I’m not nearly as fragile as you think I am.”

It’s teasing, Newt knows, but he also knows you’re not fragile because even when you’re out at the bar, you have Peter at your side. “Of course you aren’t.” His smile’s thin and he knows it.

You notice the tension, the way his gaze doesn’t quite manage to meet yours. “Something wrong?” You ask as you pad across the thick carpeting to him.

There’s so much he wants to say, but he stuffs it under the dam of his tongue. It’s late, and neither of you need the stress of a fight when you’re traveling in the morning.

He reaches forward, grabbing your thighs gently when you approach. “Just glad you made it home safe, love. I missed you.”

You lean down and peck his forehead. “I missed you too, sweetheart. Ready for bed?”

Newt swallows his guilt as a wave of cologne washes over him, emanating from your shoulder. So you had been near Peter. “If you don’t mind, I’m going to stay up a little later.”

Your confusion messes up your features, but then you shrug. “Suit yourself. I’ll see you in the morning?”

“In the morning.” He nods, allowing you to kiss his cheek again before you disappear into the bedroom and shut the door with a soft click.

Newt shuts his eyes and leans his head onto the back of the seat. So it’s true, his suspicions. You smelled of Peter’s cologne, and your grin had been big enough to fill the room. The fire continues to crackle at his side as he runs the past week through his head like a movie reel.

Three nights you’d been out with Peter until long past when any sensible person is, and you’d positively glowed when he’d asked about the man’s personality. Newt’s stomach turns as he allows what he knows to be the truth settle over his thoughts, blanket his heart, seep into his mind and poison two years of this relationship: you’re in love with Peter, and there’s nothing Newt can do to stop you from leaving him, not when you’re already spending time closer to Peter than you should.

Newt cusses quietly to himself, a sound that’s lost to the violence of the fire burning and the crack of his heart shattering. How he’ll get through this, he doesn’t know. He clenches his jaw and lets the exhaustion plaguing him for the past two hours wash over him and tug him into a sleep filled with nightmares that are far more pleasant than his new reality.

Newt wakes to the grumble of his name and a touch on his arm.

“Newt, honey, what are you doing out here?” You’re clad in your favorite nightgown, the one that normally drives Newt crazy, and your hair’s a wreck from sleep. Beautiful.

Newt catches himself smiling before the night’s revelation wiggles its way back into his conscious mind, and the words he’d been about to say flee behind the excruciating pain of the new knowledge.

You rub your eyes and yawn. “Come on, sweetheart,” you mumble, tugging on his sleeve, “let’s get some breakfast before I need to catch my train.”

But he remains in the arm chair, eyes drifting from your messy hair to the embers in the fireplace, still burning from the night. He’s lucky the fire didn’t spread, he knows, but a part of him wishes it had, wishes he’d had some other crisis to address than the one of your cheating.

Oh Merlin, you’re leaving him.

You tug on his sleeve again, frowning. “Is everything all right?”

Newt can’t smell the cologne anymore, just soap and your shampoo, but a wave of pain the same as only hours earlier crashes into him, and he answers before he can consider his words. “No.”

You cock your head, dropping his sleeve so you can perch on the creaky arm of the chair. “What’s wrong?”

Merlin, why did he say that? He catches his bottom lip between his teeth, tearing off a chunk of it, letting blood fill his mouth to earn him a moment of time to think.

You frown and say something, bending forward to look at the new cut, but Newt can’t understand what it is you’re trying to say. It’s as though you’re speaking through a wall, through a thick barrier that garbles your words and renders your meaning indecipherable. Newt blinks, but that makes everything worse. The walls shrink, and the legs of the chair across the room elongate and warp and the other furniture sways and turns and brightens in color until Newt can hardly see. He squeezes his eyes shut, doing his best to knock the muffs away from his ears, to right the world, to push away the numbness threatening to overtake his emotions and suffocate him. Merlin, he doesn’t want this. Why couldn’t you just love him? Why can’t he ever just be enough?

Newt stares straight into the embers, unable to meet your eyes, to watch how you react to his accusation. “You could just break up with me, if you’d like.”

You recoil from him, brows furrowed in a mix of confusion and worry. “Sorry?”

Newt wants to stop, wants to avoid this conversation, but something else has taken hold of his tongue, and he lets himself continue. “You and Peter… if you’d like to be with him, you could just say something.” He looks up at you, forcing a smile to his face. “I know I’m a bit much.”

Your hand lands softly on his back, a gesture meant to comfort, but all it does is agitate him. How do you dare touch him when just hours ago you touched another man? “Newt, that’s ridiculous. Peter is –“

“Just a friend, I know. You’ve mentioned that.” Newt’s eyes dart to your face, to the stunned look crossing your features. He’d never caused such a look, had never wished to, but now he longs to force the same pain on to you, to make you feel the burning ache he is. “Unfortunately, actions speak louder than words.” He hesitates, about to call you love, but he lets his pet name for you die on his tongue. You’re no longer his love, can’t be.

It’s take a moment for you to fully comprehend what he’s accusing, to even let yourself accept it because there’s no way Newt would honestly say that. “Are you accusing me of cheating?” You say, voice calm and low and very, very dangerous.

Newt knows exactly what he’s accusing you of, and the initial anger burning in his chest flares into high flames. “I’m simply stating what I know; never put a label on it.”

You pop onto your feet, backing away from him. “How dare you?”

“How dare I?” Newt glares up at you. “How dare you? You’re the one falling in love with someone else.”

“I already told you he’s just a friend.” Your voice cracks as you shout at Newt, stumbling backwards and into the kitchen.

“Tell me,” Newt asks, face flat as he watches your eyes water, “do you come home smelling like all your friends’ colognes and perfumes?”

“What?”

Newt takes a breath but doesn’t try to calm himself. He needs this anger, this fury, if he’s to make it through this situation intact. “I smelled him on you. Peter.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Newt? He helped me home. I drank a bit too much, and he held me up as we walked to the street.” You swipe at your cheeks, at the tears making their way down to your neck, and with a snarl of your lip, you take a jab at him that’s a punch to the gut. “Is that okay? Or do I need to ask permission to even look at another guy? Is this a whole Tina situation?”

Newt riles at the sentence, straightening instantly. “Tina’s not a part of this.”

You smirk at his reaction. “I thought so. We live with her, Newt, and I was supposed to be okay with that because you said you were over your little crush. I trusted you, but you can’t trust me?”

“I trusted you.” Newt had, whole-heartedly, even when you first started meeting Peter on a weekly basis. But then once a week turned into twice, and then three times, and soon all your stories involved you and Peter and you wore a necklace the man gave to you and it’s all too much.

You stand your ground. “But you don’t anymore?”

Newt pauses, unsure what to say, knowing that his answer could save or destroy the work of the past two years. The sound of a normal New York day, shouts and laughs and bargaining, wafts into the room, and Newt imagines being on the street with you right now, his hand in yours, pointing out shops and nooks where creatures would live and buying you a pastry from a bakery, but here in the apartment, where you’d had breakfasts together and spent nights together and discussed a shared future, you stand still, staring at him with wide eyes and trembling hands, and Newt knows that all of those plans can never be anything more than worthless daydream material now.

“How can I?”

You suck in a breath. “I can’t believe you right now.”

Newt swallows, fighting to keep his back straight, to avoid sinking in toward himself. “You shouldn’t have fallen in love with someone else.”

You bend in half, laughing in astonishment and anger and Newt doesn’t know what else, he just knows it’s not in amusement. “Are you kidding me? You’re pinning this on me? Newt, I didn’t do a thing with Peter but get some drinks.” Rubbing your temple, you shake your head. “I can’t do this. I can’t keep having this discussion. You either believe me, or you don’t.” You take a deep breath, and the shakiness nearly destroys Newt. “So, Newt, I guess what I need to know is…” you look up at him with a vulnerability that would knock his knees out from under him if he were standing, “do you love me?”

“More than anything.” He answers automatically, a knee jerk reaction. Of course he loves you. You’re you. Everyone would love you if they knew you. It’s a miracle he’s been with you for so long, that someone hasn’t already torn you away from his side.

Your expression softens. “Then why are you trying to push me away?”

He knows why, knows exactly why. He doesn’t deserve this: happiness, comfort, you. He’s annoying, a burden to the people that stick by him, and you, well you deserve so much more than trying to carry his dead weight through this life.

So he opens his mouth and without missing a beat, answers. “I don’t think we belong together anymore.”

The words knock the breath out of the both of you, and it seems in that second, that everything pauses. New York stops running. The apartment stops moving. You both stop breathing.

“Are you… are you breaking up with me?” Your voice trembles and Newt wonders if he’s going to be sick. Oh Merlin, why? Why can’t he just be enough for once?

“I don’t want to.” But Newt knows he is, and he knows that he should be furious with you, thinking about your hands, your lips, on another man, but all he can find as he sifts further into the expanding cavern in his chest, pas the initial anger, is a deep sadness. “Love,” he flinches at the use of the word but continues on, “I think it’d be best if you go. When you get back from your trip, I’ll be gone.” He meets your eyes for the final time. “I promise.”

You stand there, a monument to the biggest loss in Newt’s life, before finally shaking your head over and over and slinking into the bedroom to change.

Newt stands slowly, letting the knots ingrained in his muscles after so long unwind. His knees pop, his back cracks, and his ruffled clothes rustle as he digs in his pocket for his wand and draws it out.

Facing the fire, Newt stares into the crackling embers. He can nearly feel the heavy bags hanging under his eyes and the way his shoulders have already turned in. Running a hand through his hair, Newt embraces the guilt and regret pounding in his head. The things he said, the way he reacted... but it’s too late; it’s too late to take it all back, to convince you he loves you still.

With a heavy heart and exhaustion he doesn’t believe will ever leave his side now, Newt extinguishes the final embers in the fireplace and apparates away.
