Dance in Burkina Faso (translated from : https://waxeho.com/culture-et-danses-traditionnelles-au-burkina-faso/)
Dances occupy a central place in Burkinabe culture. Traditional dances are very important and are performed on many occasions. Some dances are linked to specific ceremonies, such as the mask dance, which is associated with the celebration of the harvest.
The Burkinabés are also known for their contemporary dance. Indeed, the country is famous for having been one of the first in Africa to create contemporary dance companies.
Burkinabé dancers have created a unique style by mixing traditional movements with modern influences.

Traditions and Events: The Dragon Dance - China
The Dragon Dance (local name being 舞龍, or wǔ lóng) is a traditionnal and ancient performal dance practiced in Chinese culture, as the same way as the Lion Dance (more infos about it there), it is more often see during festivities, like the Lunar New Year. This dance is performed by a team of expert dancers, manipulating a giant dragon figure, the dance team simulates the imagined movements of this river spirit in a sinuous, undulating manner.
The dragon dance is, as said earlier, often performed during Chinese New Year. Chinese dragon is an important symbol of China's culture, and they are believed to bring good luck to people, therefore the longer the dragon is in the dance, the more luck it will bring to the community. The dragons are believed to possess qualities that include great power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and auspiciousness. The appearance of a dragon is both fearsome and bold but it has a benevolent disposition, and it was an emblem to represent imperial authority. The movements in a performance traditionally symbolize the power and dignity of the dragon.
Tumblr media
The origin of the Dragon Dance was most set during the Han Dynasty, were multiples texts described different form of dances, mostly associated with rain. According to a Han dynasty texts, these rituals was made to call two dragon deities: Yinglong and Shenlong, who each one bring rain and wind for the people.
There is also others form of dances involving these creatures, more as a popular and entertainment form. One of theses examples is the Baixi (百戲), when there are dancers called "mime people" dressed up as various creatures, including the dragon, and also a fish-dragon creature, mentionned in those dances. However, theses Ancient dances does not reflect the modern dragon Dance, stated in the illustration stones from the Han period.
Objects like dragon lanterns (龍燈) and figures are also disposed for the dance preparations, the lanterns are carried long the path the dance is mostly held.
Tumblr media
The dragon is a long serpentine body formed of a number of sections on poles, with a dragon head and a tail. It is assembled by joining the series of hoops on each section and attaching the ornamental head and tail pieces at the ends. Traditionally, dragons were constructed of wood, with bamboo hoops on the inside and covered with a rich fabric, however in the modern era lighter materials such as aluminium and plastics have replaced the wood and heavy material.
The normal length and size of the body recommended for the dragon is 34 metres (110 ft) and is divided into nine major sections. The distance of each minor (rib-like) section is 35 cm (14 in) apart; therefore, the body has 81 rings. Many may also be up to 15 sections long, and some dragons are as long as 46 sections. Occasionally, dragons with far more sections may be constructed in Chinese communities around the world to produce the longest dragon possible, since part of the myth of the dragon is that the longer the creature, the more luck it will bring.
Historically the dragon dance may be performed in a variety of ways with different types and colours of dragon. Green is sometimes selected as a main colour of the dragon, which symbolizes a great harvest. Other colours include: yellow, symbolizing the solemn empire; gold or silver, symbolizing prosperity; red, representing excitement. The dragon's scales and tail are mostly beautiful silvery and glittery to create a joyous atmosphere.
Tumblr media
The dragon dance is performed by a skilled team whose job is to bring the motionless puppet body to life. The correct combination and proper timing of the different parts of the dragon are very important to make a successful dance.
The patterns of the dragon dance are choreographed according to the skills and experiences acquired by the performers. Some of the patterns of the dragon dance are "Cloud Cave", "Whirlpool", tai chi pattern, "threading the money", "looking for pearl", and "dragon encircling the pillar". The movement "dragon chasing the pearl" shows that the dragon is continually in the pursuit of wisdom.
The Dragon Dance is one of the most popular practice in the world that competion performances have been organized, those events have stricts rules involving the dragon movements and the routine performance. It is also performed in others countries, mostly in Asia like Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia.

     — ꣼ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑠𝑤𝑎𝑛.
chapter. 05. The Solstice Queen.
Tumblr media
The Swans of Misericorde is much more than an orphanage—it is the center of a human experiment masterminded by Mother Supreme Libitina. Under the pretense of religious devotion, therefore many festivities occur, for the swans to connect to their faith. One of the most expected, awaited festivity is the Solstice Festival, where the Solstice Queen is named, carried and adored by her sisters in an euphoric parade. There is one every year whose role is to become the personification of the sun of Juce. All the Swans dream of becoming Solstice Queen. Except maybe Kaeleena.
Tumblr media
The afternoon starts with a meal, all gathered around the family table in the gardens as Mother Surpeme launches the festivities by inviting all the swans to take a sip from their glass of Nectar. Then, they dance and dance around the austel in euphoria, in their traditionnal attire made of long white cotton dress and a flower crown. The flower crowns, they are all unique and different as the swans made them themselves and exchanged them right before the ceremony. Holding hands, chanting, united, together, they never stop dancing once the music started. The last swan standing is named the Solstice Queen and is carried through the gardens and the forest by her swan sisters who smile and chant and laugh, it's called the Parade.
Tumblr media
The solstice queen has big responsability, being the personification of the sun she must perform a very specific ritual, guided by Mother Supreme. The purpose of this ritual is to see how far the allegiance of the Solstice queen can go and how far the allegiance of her sisters can go, as well. They only remember the ritual as being the apogee of their faith as their memory the day aft'er seems completely gone. They don't remember the scars, they don't remember the blood, they don't remember the torture, they don't remember the sacrifice. Another glass of nectar is served and their smiles are back on their lips.

Honestly going mad over the bts content...
Every goddam extented scenes seem to be exactly like in the show, just uncut. All of them seem unimportant (nazi zombie browsing the magic shop for exemple, naked gabriel arrival).
Even the bloopers aren't really funny in the traditionnal "actors fucking up/laughing it up" (Crowley ordering Aziraphale's drink 8times).
Some of it seems... Pointed. Like the bit where david tennant is doing the sorry dance and michael sheen rate him a seven? When one of the first "fun fact"(anecdotes in french dont know the english name) is about the significance of the number 7?
Anyone else on the crazy i need to compare every bonus scene with the one in the show frame by frame??

Raking the GPF programs - junior pairs SP edition
6 - Sophia Baram/Daniel Tioumentsev - Bla bla bla cha cha cha, choreo by Cindy Stuart
Cute but I despise the song. Solid technically but imho not my thing.
5 - Chloe Panetta/Kieran Thrasher - If I Ain’t Got You, choreo by Julie Marcotte
The technical elements are a struggle which is a shame because in that field, Chloe and Kieran are definitely the most classy, for lack of a better word.
There’s a maturity to their skating, and certain abandon when they’re not struggling with the jumps, and throws, and the twist... Pretty much everything. Chloe was injured at the beginning of the season. And they’ve been skating what ? two seasons together, but ngl I’m not optimistic about their prospects.
4 - Haruna Murakami/Sumitada Moriguchi - Le Corsaire, choreo by Cathy Reed
Classical but nice. The jump requirement for the SP doesn’t allow them to showcase their ace which are stunninng SBS jumps, and puts their other pairs elements in the spotlight. It’s still a work-in-progress but they’re a very new pair.
Also best SBS spins of the field. So fast it’s a wonder.
3 -  Cayla Smith/Andy Deng - Summer of 42, choreo by Alena Lunin
Cayla and Andy have split just after the JGPF as Andy wanted to go to university.
While the tech content of that pair wasn’t the highest, they had some really nice skating skills and a decent musicality. Summer of 42 is starting to get overplayed imho, but it suited them well.
2 - Anastasia Golubeva/Hector Giotopoulos-Moore - Architects of the Mind, choreo by Galina Pachin and Jonathan Guerreiro
Music is whatever but I like the choreo, it’s all about coiling and snapping, enfurling like a snake, or like an accordeon. And kudos to them because the music is extremely fast paced and they are able to maintain that drive throughout the program. A really solid team and I cannot wait to see them next years among seniors.
1 - Violetta Sierova/Ivan Khobta - Vesna, choreo by Pylyp Zalevskyi
Hands down the best choreo for a short program of the season among the pairs, juniors AND seniors.
There’s just so much to love there, starting with the costumes, with Ivan in traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanka, and while the embroidered flowers on Violetta’s dress are in the colour of the national flag.
The music choice also is outstanding. We need more ethno rock/folk, and less Western pop music in figure skating. And that song genuinely slaps. Please if you can have a look at the lyrics, they are beautiful, and in the context of the war, became even more haunting.
And finally the choreo is chock full of little details, lovely transitions, all taken from traditionnal dances, the hops, and turns and the moves.
Violetta and Ivan do need more speed, attack and projection to make that short really sing, so I hope they’re going to keep it for the next season and refine it.

Can you share with us incultes some of that trad/folk Québec music knowledge
this is the best anon i have ever recieved!!! i could write a whole essay (in fact many) but ill try to make it short laksdlksdfh
So basically my father is a trad french-canadian step-dancer from Montreal and i’ve grown up in the trad/folk music community. I am myself a singer in that style and my brother is a fiddler. The traditionnal music here takes its roots in both british-celtic and french trad cultures and is influenced by (and as influenced) american, canadian and metis cultures. Oral traditions are basically just a big ol’ melting pot where each individual culture puts its own spin on it. For an untrained ear an irish jig can sound the same as a québec one, but for us there is a clear difference: its not the same color, the same way of playing, the sames steps, even if the ressemblance is evident. Same thing goes for songs: the lyrics/stories might be the same than in France but the melody/slang varies. My father dances a type of steps called “british clogging” because a guy made him clogs once and it turns out this dance as almost dissapeared from England. One time an Italian guy played a tune from his country that is really well known here but under another name, another rythm. Each region of a same country has its own way of doing it: people dont jig the same in Cape-Breton than in Manitoba, for exemple.
The beauty of oral trad/folk cultures is that everything is linked. Stories and melodies played here can be found in Germany or even Sweden. It travelled trough space and time, from mouth to mouth, ear to ear. It traces not only the history of your people but History itself. The never ending exchanges between humans, since the dawn of time. It tells you both the mythical adventures and the everyday struggles and ugliness of life. It shows you that there is no such thing as a “pure untouched culture” and every neo-fascist scumbags who try to say otherwise dont know a single thing about these cultures. At the root of our “traditional arts” is the simple and yet incredibly rich poetry of the people. Under its magic, a lady turns into a dove to escape her molester, the devil is beaten up by a local farmer, flowers can grow on the grave of the innocent and the drunk man makes a ballad out of his misery, an ode to life.

NECROMANCY. Hector hardly ever danced in his life and he's very akward when he comes to that, but he spent so much time watching people celebrate and he assimilated it to joy and bounding so long story short : after Dracula falls, who's teaching my son to dance ????

i will just bring up the fact that straight passing is not exactly something that someone "does" or "is". it's everyone else that decides if you are straight or not. you can help things by choosing specific clothes, specific ways to refer to your partner, etc, but ultimately, in terms of body language, appearance, etc. ...and sometimes, no matter what you do, the queer shines through.
Hi, I’m the one who commented about Callum not being masculine in the traditional sense. Just wanting to make clear that I in no way think Ben and Callum’s experience growing up as gay men wasn’t different. It was. I know that. But I just wanted to point out that I don’t think he was traditionally masculine, regardless of whether people picked up on clues or not. Come to think of it, there are at least 2 people who picked up on some clues: 1/ Jonno for sure (can’t tell me he didn’t actually know/sense this about his son, even still when Callum was about to marry Whitney I think Jonno knew, based on some of the stuff we heard him say to Callum) and 2/ Chris. Chris definitely did and I don’t think it’s because Callum overtly flirted with Chris! And who knows, 3/ maybe even Callum’s mother did and that’s why (or it’s one of the reasons) she left? But yes, Callum was straight passing to most people and he didn’t suffer as much as Ben did. I’m not saying the contrary with my original comment.
2 people seeing that he was queer doesn't erase his straight passing privilege though.
Also, Jonno thought Callum was soft, but the abuse was the same as he gave Stuart. It was never specifically homophobic in nature (to our knowledge)
And Chris, like Ben, could see through it cos he recognised it. Yet neither of them exposed him to homophobic abuse either.
Until Callum came out, he'd never experienced homophobia towards himself.
Anyway I worked out I didn't mean traditionally masculine I meant straight passing, thanks again @brokenboysfrombrokenhomes so /
