An Afrofuturist Architect Builds for a Better Future | WIRED
Kéré combines traditions of African architecture with influences from pre-industrial Europe to create buildings that value natural elements, from a kindergarten in Munich and Kensington Gardens in London to houses of parliament in West Africa and towers inspired by baobab trees at Coachella in California. Last year, he became the first person of African descent to win the prestigious Pritzker Architecture prize.
Kéré is part of an architecture movement that tries to build in partnership with communities, using local resources and more sustainable alternatives to concrete. But he insists that buildings designed for a future shaped by climate change don’t have to be ugly, and that everyone deserves spaces of beauty and light. The conversation has been edited for brevity and clarity.

President of Burkina Faso Ibrahim Traore said that there will be no more mining allowed for the West.
Our so-called friends have been extracting our wealth for too long.
We are going to revoke mining licenses and they will no longer be able to exploit our resources.

American Spy
"We all have to make concessions for the greater good."
A mother writing to her sons to tell them the truth about her life, how it came to be so dangerous. American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson is fiction rolled up in facts. It was not the page-turner I was expecting it to be, but it was good, nonetheless. A slow-moving book, it captures the reader with the feelings of Marie (the mother) while she lays her life out in a journal. It makes you wonder about the life during the Cold War and its aftereffects. This book particularly focuses on the eradication of communism from Burkina Faso with Marie placed on an assignment to eliminate the President of the country- Thomas Sankara. With a bit of twists and turns, "American Spy" captures the essence of human dilemma, complex feelings and doing what you feel is right. In my opinion it could have been a bit more elaborate on the missions of the main character and focused more on its effects on her life. Even then, the story of Burkina Faso captured my attention, and I would recommend it for readers interested in modern history with a twist. An overall 7/10.

Dance in Burkina Faso (translated from : https://waxeho.com/culture-et-danses-traditionnelles-au-burkina-faso/)
Dances occupy a central place in Burkinabe culture. Traditional dances are very important and are performed on many occasions. Some dances are linked to specific ceremonies, such as the mask dance, which is associated with the celebration of the harvest.
The Burkinabés are also known for their contemporary dance. Indeed, the country is famous for having been one of the first in Africa to create contemporary dance companies.
Burkinabé dancers have created a unique style by mixing traditional movements with modern influences.

The Life, Politics and Legacies of Thomas Sankara
The Life, Politics and Legacies of Thomas Sankara
Celebrating and critiquing the life of one of Africa’s most important anti-imperialist leaders
Thomas Sankara was one of Africa's most important anti-imperialist leaders of the late 20th Century. His declaration that fundamental socio-political change would require a 'certain amount of madness' drove the Burkinabe Revolution and resurfaced in the country's popular uprising in 2014.
This book looks at Sankara's political philosophies and legacies and their relevance today. Analyses of his synthesis of Pan-Africanism and humanist Marxist politics, as well as his approach to gender, development, ecology and decolonisation offer new insights to Sankarist political philosophies. Critical evaluations of the limitations of the revolution examine his relationship with labour unions and other aspects of his leadership style. His legacy is revealed by looking at contemporary activists, artists and politicians who draw inspiration from Sankarist thought in social movement struggles today, from South Africa to Burkina Faso.
In the 30th anniversary of his assassination, this book illustrates how Sankara's political praxis continues to provide lessons and hope for decolonisation struggles today.
Amber Murrey is Postdoctoral Fellow in Sociology at The American University in Cairo, Egypt. Her award-winning research considers contemporary Pan-Africanism, resistance to neo-colonial violence, resource extraction and decolonisation. She has been published in a variety of academic journals, including Third World Quarterly, Political Geography, The Journal of Black Studies, The Postcolonialist and Capital and Class. She is the editor of A Certain Amount of Madness (Pluto, 2018).
Endorsements: 'The legendary Thomas Sankara - hero, revolutionary leader, anti-imperialist - receives deserving analytical treatment from the most prominent radical voices here assembled for one the greatest sons of Africa. The book enhances our understanding of the pragmatism of politics, the rhetoric of revolutionary actions, and the resurgence of reactionary forces. A must read' - Toyin Falola, Honorary Professor, University of Cape Town, University Distinguished Professor and Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities, The University of Texas at Austin
'This book by a wide range of committed scholars, including, crucially, a significant number of African scholars, is a necessary and illuminating intervention. The Sankara that emerges here is more than 'Africa's Che Guevara', a man whose ideas and politics are 'rich with a thousand nuances' that distinguish them from other forms of Marxism and Pan-Africanism. Sankara comes alive in all his complexity' - Sean Jacobs, Associate Professor of International Affairs at The New School and Founder and Editor, Africa is a Country

The moment Leopold Sedar Senghor heard that Thomas Sankara had changed the name of his country from Haute Volta to Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 , and the people who live there will be called Burkinabes, he sent a letter to him saying Mr President, this appellation does not correspond to French therefore I will suggest that you call the population Burkineux and Burkineuse. But Thomas Sankara replied to him:
"We are not french people and we don't want to speak French better than you. We are Africans and this appellation shall remain like this. "
In only 4 yrs in power (1983-87), Thomas Sankara
Built 350 schools, roads, railways without foreign aid.
No loan
Increased literacy rate by 60%
Banned forced marriages
Gave poor people land
Vaccinated 2.5 million kids
Planted 10 million trees
Appointed females to high governmental positions, encouraged them to work, recruited them into the military, and granted pregnancy leave during
sold off the government fleet of Mercedes cars and made the Renault 5 (the cheapest car sold in Burkina Faso at that time) the official service car of the ministers.
He reduced the salaries of all public servants, including his own, and forbade the use of government chauffeurs and 1st class airline tickets.
As President, he lowered his salary to $450 a month and limited his possessions to a car, four bikes, three guitars, a fridge and a broken freezer.
He opposed foreign aid, saying that “he who feeds you, controls you.”
Drove out French imperialism & withdrew Burkina Faso from IMF
A very productive life that was brutally cut short. He was assassinated at the age of 38 by France 🇫🇷 and its ally through Friend. Rest on son of the soil.
A king in making who inspires millions of people today in the World. #Africa
