The essay about the fairy tale influences on the Little House series goes into great detail about all the fairy tale elements of Little House in the Big Woods, and mentions how the series ends with Laura marrying her "Prince Charming", but I'm disappointed that it completely failed to mention:
Mr. Edwards is portrayed as almost a magical helper. His "wildcat from Tennessee" characterization draws from tall tale traditions like Davy Crockett--a distinctly American legendary figure come to help the frontier family. The fact that he's portrayed as literally meeting and collaborating with Santa Claus. The way he shows up several books later as a deus ex machina to help Pa get his homestead--almost like the fairy tale trope of the magical creature getting help from the hero early on and then coming back to help the hero.
The moment with the wolves on Silver Lake that's portrayed like a mystical encounter with some grand and tragic fairy king.
The moment in the fairy ring at the end of Silver Lake, and how these two moments create a fairy tale theme about the tension between the magical and the mundane as the prairie is settled.
Cap Garland having an almost magical sense of direction that helps him to reach the town and get help when the schoolteacher is leading the rest of the students the wrong way.
Almanzo and Cap going on a fairy tale quest to find the potentially-mythical supplies that could save the whole town.
#little house#laura ingalls wilder#little house on the prairie#on the shores of silver lake#the long winter#the fairy tale essay is by far the best part of 'pioneer girl perspectives' so far#because it treats the stories as stories!#it mentions how they change facts and gloss over uncomfortable history to make something not-real#but recognizes that they're not trying to be real#they exist within a storytelling tradition that goes back much further than the 1800s#(the essay even quotes chesteron! accurately!)#(and gives the fairy-king 'heart over the wall' story from laura's columns)#and anyway it treats the series as art with a specific storytelling lens#instead of nitpicking it to death for failing to account for every gritty real-life detail#it's not perfect but also it's exactly what i've been wanting to find ever since i started researching this series

A second Beast of Basalt, taking inspiration from columnar basalt like before, but also the phenomenon of flood basalt. The tail is composed of a'a lava, and makes that clinkery, glassy sound when it gets swung! I painted this with acrylic inks.

I'm bored and in heavy procrastination mode rn, so ima try something new!
Do you remember those old newspaper advice columns? People would write in with questions, usually about relationships, and receive advice? I thought it'd be pretty neat to try that with one of my own characters answering questions from your characters! And so, here's your chance to...
💕Ask Elsind!💫
Worried you might be misjudging your vampire boyfriend's level of commitment? Magic powers getting in the way of making out? Cursed to remain as a hideous bird monster until your true love gives up on you? Ask Elsind! Questions don't have to be romantic in nature, but that is this changeling's specialty. Pop a question into my inbox addressed to them (or any of my other characters, if you'd like their opinion), and I'll give the answer they would come up with.
(All I ask is nothing overly nsfw. Flex those euphemism muscles if you must. I believe in you!)
But yeah! Does your character have a problem? Elsind has (maybe) a solution! Stop on by and see what their advice is :)
(And, of course, have a bitchin day)

#in advice column tradition asks can be formatted like a letter written by your character but frankly you do you#was this all inspired by me finally having come up with a plan for Elsind's epilog as a bookshop owner and writer at a local newspaper?#perhaps >:)#writblr#my ocs#oc advice column#writing#writerscommunity#writing ask game

Figuring out the concept of being Familiar, which is just an excuse to do creature design again.
Script is Chahvinik by @thecrazyneographist.
Persons who become involved with a God to any significant degree have started the process of becoming Familiar with it. To be Familiar is to possess some quality(s) similar to that of the God in question.
The concept of being Familiar gets its name from witnesses to these people describing them most often as “different, but familiar”.
In its mildest forms, being Familiar entails a slight change in mannerisms, such as different vocabulary, or slight visual changes, such as hair or eyes shining oddly in the right light.
More noticeably and famously, those intimately Familiar with a God may attain an animalistic or inhuman form that resembles some aspect(s) of the God in question. In some cases, a person will become stuck in this Familiar form, but with practice and guidance from others Familiar, they can learn to shift between their human shape and their Familiar one.
Being Familiar gives a person a great advantage in supernatural dealings, and as such, organizations who work intimately with the supernatural actively seek out Familiars for recruitment.
Above are the Familiar forms of various members of the Chatter & Melody Society, which generally favors those with links to Gods that are anchored in reality, in line with the Society’s stated goal of maintaining balance and using the supernatural for the betterment of all.
#worldbuilding#layered earth#sketch#traditional art#look at my brain coming up with all this worldbuilding on the spot#just started with ‘hey why are they called familiars?’ and went off#im proud of that squishy ball of cells in my head cavity#ive always had a soft spot for robyn’s design (top left) but i also quite like alan (center column third down)#roark is neat too (right column third down). big ole bloody bandages zebra

Today I learned I should not simply decide the characters I don't know on a menu listing are irrelevant and ignore them, because it turns out the 洋甘 in 洋甘菊花茶 yánggān júhuāchá means it's actually chamomile, and not merely a kind of 菊花茶 (chrysanthemum tea). Although to be fair they're in the same plant family, and I was thinking of something else entirely when I ordered it so I would have been surprised at the result either way...

i'm against the nuclear family dynamic and strictly believe that the current tradwife movement is deeply disturbing and the entire concept of a dependant housewife disgusts me, but! the way i would turn that fucker into a wife. a pretty little wife with a cute little apron, with nothing but keeping the house clean and me fed on his mind. he'll be pushing out babies for me and be happy about it.
#it's okay if it's a kink thing because it falls under the parody column. it's a bastardization of traditional values or something#idk we're a post socialist country we never had this shit#anyways#i need to learn how to draw sentinel...
