A VERY DESCRIPTIVE PROFILE OF YOUR MUSE. Repost with the information of your muse, including headcanons, etc. if you fail to achieve some of the facts, add some other of your own!
Tumblr media
NAME: Arma Marie Isdera (chosen) / Vantage (original name) PLSR8020L7QV828472082 (serial number) / Esperanza (temporary alias)
NICKNAME: n/a
TITLE(S): n/a
AGE: 26
SPECIES: human, android
SEX: Female
NATIONALITY: born in the united states, made to resemble someone from southern Europe (i.e. southern regions of Italy)
INTERESTS: Arma writes to an obsessive degree, chronicling many of her thoughts with a fountain pen. Depending on verse, her writing is either eloquent journal entries, or unhinged scribbling that only makes sense to her. "Black Trees" is her noise music project; the mild-mannered Arma loves shrieking into a microphone.
PROFESSION: What Arma enjoys the most is her work at Serapis, an organization that hosts people to take trips to other dimensions. She is a Leif, a sort of tour guide, that helps people navigate through these experiences. In other words, Arma is a professional trip sitter. In reality, Serapis is a front for the government, who is using the visitors as test subjects for a Project MKUltra-esque experiment. Arma is, of course, oblivious to this; she likes that her position hires more androids than other places.
There have been other scenes in which Arma is a barista at the Khamsin Inn, a small coffee shop near the walls of Neo-LA. I kinda thought it would be a fun joke to have Arma appear doing the most random jobs imaginable, like working at the DMV or operating construction equipment.
BODY TYPE: Very svelte, like someone who does a lot of cardio and aerobics. Arma's beauty lies not in the size of her features, but in her proportions.
EYES: entirely black (this makes her sensitive to bright light)
HAIR: Jet black, almost looking blue or purple in some lights. Arma doesn't really put her hair up unless she's going for a specific style; the people who made her were able to patch "long hair can be annoying" out of her DNA. She has thick eyebrows.
SKIN: Pale, stone gray, owing to genetic reasons, and her having black blood. Arma has permanent black lip gloss that doesn't come off.
POSTURE: Arma's sense of balance is extremely good, owing to the slightly mechanical nature of her. She usually wears stilettos, and can run in them at almost full speed. All of her movements are very measured and precise, almost to a robotic degree. She can also spend a much longer time upside down than normal people, without becoming uncomfortable. Arma can't swim.
HEIGHT: 5’9”
VOICE: It's deep, raspy, and androgynous. It's like she's whispering, but instead of getting louder, she gets closer to your ear. This can be disconcerting, because she can be talking to you from across the room, but it will sound like she's whispering in your ear. Everything Arma says is slow, and deliberate.
SIGNATURE OUTFIT: She has a fake fur coat she always wears, it's gray, very soft, and is meant to resemble chinchilla. Under that she usually wears some kind of turtleneck, crop top, or a more plain blouse, and black leggings. Alternates would be a cocktail dress, or a short skirt with fishnets. Arma has very sensitive eyes, so basically any time outside is spent with very dark sunglasses on. These have gold frames, to match a thin bracelet on her wrist. Charlemagne made her a necklace consisting of a black metal star, which she wears every day to honor him. Her aesthetic is basically "vampire that loves Trader Joe's."
Her appearance is one of the few exceptions to her otherwise austere lifestyle. In short, Arma is always slaying, even if the occasion doesn't call for it. Tabby is your girl if you want messy buns and oversized hoodies.
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Arma is in a difficult spot emotionally. Her only relationship, both platonic and romantic, was with Charlemagne, her boyfriend who she escaped from New York with. In this timeline, she is just beginning to open up to new people after losing him on the journey to Neo Los Angeles.
COMPANIONS: Noelle, Pari, Spoons, and recently Kira. She drags Tabby out of the house, and relies on Limbo to help her with her car, and house repairs. Arma does not know that Limbo is a criminal.
ANTAGONISTS: Other than the police, and associated android hunters, Arma does not have any opps in the RPC. She is like a capybara, she survives by getting along with everyone. Arma likes, but is scared of Aura.
STRENGTHS: Resilience - Arma's body is unusually resilient, as she can shrug of things that would hospitalize a typical person. She is not completely impervious to everything, but, like, getting hit by a car would probably just stun her for a few seconds. She's very adaptive, and cunning - Arma is always open to learn knew things in order to both expand her frame of reference and to achieve what she desires. She can be a very out-of-the-box thinker. I've mentioned this before, but Arma is basically just a nice lady who wants to have a good time.
WEAKNESSES: As stated above, Arma's emotional state is not the greatest. She can be very emotionally dependent on her friends, and isn't the best with boundaries. Arma is a people pleaser, and puts the opinions of people she looks up to on a pedestal. Honestly, she's also kind of gullible, and too trusting of others.
FRUITS: Fruit? Fruit is a canvas, waiting to be painted (with chocolate.)
DRINKS: Arma is a true water enjoyer, preferring to chug it at room temperature. If not that, she loves hot drinks, especially hot chocolate and mocha lattes.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: espresso martinis, and the reddest of red wine. Arma will swirl it menacingly as she lounges on her couch.
SMOKES: Has indulged in a cigarette once or twice.
DRUGS: No.
DRIVER'S LICENSE: Yes. Arma's income isn't always the most steady, and she drives a very tired Geo Metro that's filled with Squishmallows.

Entering the Ethereum ETF Realm: Essentials for New Traders
Key Points
Spot Ethereum ETFs have been approved for trading in the US from 23rd July.
Despite Ethereum’s slow performance, investor sentiment remains optimistic.
Trading for Ethereum ETFs was approved on 23rd July, despite Ethereum’s slow performance.
The bullish momentum for Ethereum continues to persist.
SEC Approves Ethereum ETFs
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) gave the go-ahead for Ethereum ETFs.
Companies such as BlackRock, Fidelity, 21Shares, Bitwise, Franklin Templeton, VanEck, and Invesco Galaxy are among those who received approval.
This approval came after the SEC endorsed their S-1 registration statements on 22nd July.
This allowed these ETFs to begin trading on major stock exchanges, including the Nasdaq, New York Stock Exchange, and Chicago Board Options Exchange.
Interestingly, this approval came a day after President Joe Biden announced he would not be running for reelection.
Ethereum’s Reaction and Predictions
The news didn’t significantly impact Ethereum’s price.
Despite this, investor sentiment remains positive.
Crypto analyst RunnerXBT encouraged investors to stay strong, predicting that Ethereum ETF inflows will exceed expectations.
On the other hand, Crypto analytics firm Kaiko predicts that Ethereum’s price will rise by no more than 24% by the end of the year due to underwhelming demand for the spot Ethereum products.
The launch of Ethereum ETFs is expected to significantly impact the Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE) and its price dynamics.
Investors are likely to shift their funds from ETHE to the newly launched spot ETFs, potentially causing outflows from ETHE.
As ETHE transitions to a spot ETF, it will become more liquid, prompting many investors to sell.
This shift, along with the narrowing discount, suggests traders are ready to cash out at full NAV prices, realizing profits.
The technical analysis of Ethereum indicates that bullish momentum continues to outpace bearish pressure.

United Auto Workers Open Contract Talks in Detroit
Tumblr media
The three Detroit automakers and the United Auto Workers union have begun negotiating a new labor contract in what could become the most contentious talks between the two sides in perhaps half a century. The discussions, which formally started on Thursday, come as General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis have posted a long streak of strong profits in North America, and after the U.A.W. elected a president who has vowed to win back many of the wage and benefit concessions the union has ceded over the last two decades.Shawn Fain, an outsider candidate, prevailed in an upset election victory over the incumbent U.A.W. president this year largely by promising to take a more militant approach to contract negotiations than his recent predecessors. Since then, he has expressed a readiness to shut down factories to achieve the goals of the union, which represents 150,000 hourly workers employed by the three Detroit companies.“If the Big Three don’t give us our fair share, then they are choosing to strike themselves,” Mr. Fain, 54, said Wednesday as he greeted workers ending their shift at a G.M. electric vehicle plant in Detroit. “We are not afraid to take action. Our union is united. We can’t be afraid to stand up and fight.”A day later, Mr. Fain underscored his view by breaking with tradition and declining to take part in the usual ceremonial opening of negotiations, where in the past the U.A.W.’s president shook hands with the automakers’ chief executives as a gesture of harmony for photographers and television cameras before the two sides got down to bargaining.“I’m not shaking hands with any C.E.O.s until they do right by our members and we fix the broken status quo,” Mr. Fain said. The bargaining is taking place as the labor movement is showing renewed strength in the United States. A strike by Hollywood writers against movie and television producers just entered its third month. Hollywood actors went on strike on Friday. Graduate student teachers — some represented by the U.A.W. — have been on strike at universities across the country since April. Hotel workers in Los Angeles walked off the job for three days in June.In the last few years, more than 300 Starbucks stores as well as some Trader Joe’s stores, Chipotle restaurants and an Amazon warehouse in New York have unionized. The Teamsters union is threatening to strike against UPS in August if the two cannot agree on a new contract.“We are seeing in very diverse work places a new interest in unions and a willingness to strike,” said Harley Shaiken, a professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, who has followed the labor movement for more than three decades. “What we don’t know yet is how large this movement is going to become and how far it is going to go.”The negotiations coincide with the start of the 2024 presidential election campaign. The U.A.W. traditionally backs the Democratic candidate, but the union has withheld an endorsement of President Biden to push the White House to up its support of unions. In Detroit, the contract talks are playing out amid a momentous transition to electric vehicles. G.M., Ford and Stellantis have been investing billions of dollars in new technologies and battery plants, although so far, they have introduced only a handful of new E.V.s, sales of these vehicles are growing but low and none of the three automakers has yet made money off E.V.s.This transition presents a concern for the union because E.V.s have far fewer parts than conventional autos — they have no exhaust system, no transmission, no fuel system — and require fewer workers to produce them. G.M., Ford and Stellantis have started building battery plants with joint-venture partners, which are not automatically covered by the U.A.W.’s labor contract. The union has organized a G.M. battery plant in Ohio, but workers there must negotiate their wage rates and terms separately from the main U.A.W. agreement.“Electrification presents problems,” said Earl Fuller Jr., the G.M. chairman at Local 160 in Warren, Mich. “We see jobs going away and that needs to be addressed.”While investing heavily in E.V.s, the automakers are still generating substantial profits off sales of pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, helped by near-record prices of new vehicles. Over the last 10 years, G.M. and Ford have typically made a pretax profit of $7 billion to $11 billion a year in North America. Stellantis, the smallest of the three, has usually earned somewhat less, although its pretax results in the region topped $13 billion in 2021 and 2022.Mr. Shaiken said the union had considerable leverage in the negotiations. “The stakes are very high for the auto manufacturers with this E.V. transition taking place,” he said. “A strike could be very costly for the companies.”In his estimation, a strike is likely but not certain. The automakers maintain that they bear a disadvantage in labor costs. According to Ford, its hourly cost of U.A.W. labor is $64, and it estimates that is $9 more than the labor cost for foreign-owned automakers with nonunion plants in the United States, and $14 to $19 more than that of Tesla, which also uses nonunion workers. In the past, G.M., Ford and Stellantis have often lost money, or made little. Each needed concessions from the union to survive, and the union steadily agreed to many of the automakers’ demands in a series of contracts beginning in 2003.The cost of health care for U.A.W. retirees has been shifted from the automakers to a union trust fund. The union agreed to allow the manufacturers to start new hires at about half of the $32 hourly rate that veteran workers earn. New workers get 401(k) accounts for retirement instead of guaranteed pensions. While the manufacturers have been paying substantial profit-sharing bonuses — sometimes more than $10,000 for each worker — the U.A.W. has gone without cost-of-living adjustments that in the past protected workers from inflation. In contract talks four years ago, the union sought to regain ground on those issues. The automakers agreed to increases in hourly wages and profit-sharing, improved terms for temporary workers and modified wage tiers but stopped short of scrapping them for a single wage rate.Workers at G.M. also demanded that the company reverse a plan to close a factory in Lordstown, Ohio, and went on strike for 40 days but ended up ratifying a contract that allowed the shuttering of the plant. The 2019 contract did include provisions for G.M. to invest $3 billion in its plant in Detroit, which had also been designated for possible closing. The money was used to convert the site into G.M.’s flagship E.V. plant, now called Factory Zero, which produces an electric Cadillac S.U.V. as well as the electric GMC Hummer.Margaret Hudgins-Washington, 56, a battery operator at the plant, was one of several dozen who stopped to talk to Mr. Fain on Wednesday. She has worked there for about a year, makes about $16 an hour and wants to see an end to the two-tier wage structure.“Our workers have regressed with inflation,” she said. “So I think we need better pay.”She and many others uniformly endorsed Mr. Fain’s tougher approach.“I think he’s doing the right thing,” said Kevin Winston, an electrician and a father of five from Brownstown, Mich. “Now is the time. I’m ready to strike, 100 percent, and I haven’t heard any people say we shouldn’t strike.” Source link Read the full article

Short, Curly Haired! S/O
Request: If you don’t mind, could the reader have messy curly hair? ( like short messy curly hair? I totally don’t want to buzz in your work/ bother your creative process so if you dont want to do it it’s fine!! 💕 )
Characters: All! Separate, Non-Poly. (Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, April O’Neil.)
Content Warnings: None!
Word Count: 1021
Raphael
Short curly hair… he’s so in love. 2B to 4C, it’s all gorgeous to him!
If you’re okay with having your hair touched, he’s a king at detangling. His fingers work apart the little knots and tangles so gently, you hardly even realize he’s there. It’s relaxing.
Loves putting little spring beauties, virginia roses, and starflowers in your hair.
Curly hair & glasses pair so well together… if you ever include glasses into your aesthetic, he’s gonna MELT.
Entranced by the life and bounce of your hair.
Really impressed by the amount of time and care that goes into maintaining curly hair!!
He’s pretty good about packing umbrellas! New York rains all the time, which sucks if your hair frizzes in the rain. It’s nice to walk cuddled up to him, rain tapping rhythmically on the umbrella.
Literally the king of beanies. Do it, steal them. (He thinks it's the cutest thing ever, too. He can’t help but lean down to give you a kiss when he catches you.)
Leonardo
Curly hair is so pretty to him, and short hair has a very special spot in his heart, so short AND curly hair? He’s about to propose.
He’s actually pretty okay at detangling! He knows when he’s not gonna be able to get one and just leaves it alone. Great to fall asleep to, not so great if you actually want to go somewhere.
This man has the memory of a GOD. He knows your hair care routine forwards and backwards, and he likes to help :) He also likes to draw little cat ears on your products. It makes you giggle.
He likes to rest his head on yours doing movie night.
He loves to swim so much… godspeed with your hair, babe. He promises not to tease you if your hair gets frizzy.
He’ll carry an umbrella for you for the rain. New York is so rainy… rip frizzies.
We all know he’s jokes for everything. Any time, any place. It’s your choice on whether you have to beat him to death with a pillow.
“Hey, could you pass me the salt?” “What? Sorry, I couldn’t hear you over the…. volume of your hair.”
Humble him by smacking him with the nearest pillow <3
Donatello
God, you’re so pretty. Short, messy, naturally curly hair is literally his ideal type.
Also god FINALLY an excuse to buy silk satin pillowcases. He’s been wanting them for ages, he just hasn’t actually bought them. He’s 100% using this as an excuse. Even if you don’t use satin pillowcases yourself, he’s getting them damn it.
King of detangling. Need I say more?
Tech bo has a built-in umbrella! God is Real and she’s in New York tonight <3
He’s somewhat aware of the amount of love and care that goes into maintaining curly hair. He’s heard April talk about the trials of having coily hair - from maintenance to weird people who think it’s their right to touch other people (ew) - he’s heard it all. (She has around 3C-4A hair.) So while he doesn’t have the experience of having curly hair himself, he’s got a healthy respect and admiration for it. He memorizes the products and routines you do, and sees if there’s any way to automate your routine or make it easier.
He’s good at striking a balance in coloring curly hair! If you ever want help with coloring your hair, he’s the turtle to go to. Great at mixing chemicals to lighten your hair without damaging your hair. He’s also got a great eye for color.
He’s not one to put flowers in your hair himself, but he thinks they’re really pretty. And to be fair… it’s such a look. He’ll also short-circuit if you ever incorporate glasses into your aesthetic. (His biggest weakness </3)
Michelangelo
He’s in LOVE.
King of the flower crowns. If he was allowed inside Trader Joes, you know he’d be buying out their flower section so he could fashion them into crowns for you. But uh… we know about The Situation. And Dad said no more breaking into stores </3
So he likes to pick wild flowers instead!! (He’s most partial to Swamp Azalea, Goldenaster, Butterfly Weed, and Beachrod crowns! On road trips, he spends a lot of time picking flowers for you. He’s so cute.)
Always forgets his umbrella </3 He’ll give you his jacket though. Dork.
He’s pretty good at coloring curly hair! If you can figure out how to lighten it, he knows how to color it. He’s got a great idea of how the color will show up, and he knows how to pick the perfect shade.
King of butterfly clips and bobby pins.
In love with the way your hair bounces. He may or may not have a couple pages in his Commonplace Journal dedicated to poetry about you.
April O’Neil
CURLY HAIR SOLIDARITY
Depending on how coily your hair is, how dry it is, what the texture is, etc. She might have some styling tips! She loves how short your hair is, too.
Your guys’ bathroom is so stocked </3
Interested in knowing your routine! She’s down to share hers as well, if you ever want to try something new. She also wants to know about your history with your hair, if you’re fine with talking about it. Natural hair is something to be proud of, and growing up curly ain’t always easy.
She genuinely has no idea how to bleach & dye curly hair </3 If you ever want to try it though, she’d love to try it with you! (She REALLY wants neon green tips, or maybe an ombre…)
Local beanie thief! She’s gonna steal ‘em all. (But gladly welcomes you doing the same, lmao.)
Goddess at detangling! She’s gentle and fast as hell. It’s really easy to fall asleep in her arms like that.
The humidity of NY is AWFUL. Y’all can suffer together, though. Rain doesn’t bother her all too much, but she’s always gonna pack an umbrella for you.
Loves buying flower bouquets for you. When she walks in with them, she always has one smaller, cut flower to tuck behind your ear.
She has a strong love for poetry, and she often writes about you.
[ @whygz I hope this turned out okay!! :D]

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: brief mention of pneumonia and death in the first paragraph, excessive use of commas.
A/N: I’ve been suffering the worst writer’s block, but I think I’m starting to shake it off with this work, so finger’s crossed we get an update on one of my WIPs soon! Big thanks to @nacho-bucky and @captain-kelli for the extremely helpful advice that allowed me to produce a half-decent piece of writing after who-knows-how-long. It’s also hotter than Hell right now, and it was soothing to escape into a NYC winter while writing this, if you’re wondering where the inspiration came from.
Tumblr media
Bucky hates the cold. He detests the way it bites into his bones, abhors the reminders of the graves he used to help dig every time another person in the neighborhood died of pneumonia, loathes remembering how the rattle in Steve’s lungs made him worry that his would be the next. But you, unlike Steve and possibly Sam and Nat, don’t know that. The new cook hired when a spike in missions made it increasingly more difficult for the Avengers to prepare their own meals, you have been here for all of three weeks when you appear in the living room requesting assistance with grocery shopping.
Sam and Nat got back from a mission just yesterday and are still nursing their wounds splayed across multiple bean bags, Tony has Steve tied to the sofa by the latter’s promise to watch Star Wars, and while Wanda and Vision are available, Bucky stands at attention when you enter before you have even completed your sentence. Steve snickers, and Bucky would cuff him if he wasn’t two couches over and preoccupied with stifling a rising blush. As it is, he sends a discreet glare his best friend’s way, and volunteers to brave New York’s snow-clad streets with you instead, only because he’s a gentleman and definitely not to see the resounding smile in thanks that sends his heart racing.
“Let me go grab a jacket first,” he says, passing by you where you stand wearing a hand-knitted scarf under your jacket and a worn hat on your head, none of it able to suppress the scent of gingerbread on your person.
“I’ll wait by the car,” you call from behind him, and he grins to himself when he hears Tony say not the Audi! as the elevator doors close.
Five minutes later, you’re both in the garage, trying to determine which car to take if Tony’s precious Audi is unavailable, and since you’re going to be driving, he sees no reason to suggest otherwise when you head for the Tesla. Although Bucky is slowly catching up with the times, between frequent trips to the local library, the ever-so-helpful internet under F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s guidance, and the miracle of history documentaries, driving a car is one thing he still has not learnt.
However, you were born and raised in Arlington, Texas, a city with a negligible public transport system, and therefore know how to drive. How you’ll fare on frosty streets remains to be seen. Now, he realizes neither of you really thought this trip through much beyond the date and time of the event, but you’re an experienced driver, and he has faith that you’ll adapt just fine. Besides, it’s not like it’s your first time out.
The silence in the car is calm, warm, the gentle hum of the radiator only audible to Bucky beneath the still quieter murmur of the electric engine, and you nod your head to an invisible tune as the car speeds down country roads, towards the cluster of skyscrapers in the distance, made cloudy by winter haze.
He’s so focused on the city ahead that he nearly jumps out of his skin when you speak for the first time since you got in the car. “Is there anywhere you’d like to go besides the supermarket?” You ask, and he sees that you think you’ve bothered him, that you’ve dragged him out against his will, and he doesn’t want to let you believe that.
“I’m happy to go wherever you like,” is his answer, with a smile that he hopes is more placating than nervous, because who knows what it’s like to be the newest part of a well-oiled machine that you think doesn’t need you. While you aren’t with them in the field, you live with them and have, in this short time, endeared yourself to each Avenger in a unique way. Recalling watching Peter do his homework a couple of months back, he thinks of nuclei and electrons, and how you seem to be an example of the first particle. Not only because he is attracted to you, but also because of how you pull people into your circle. Bucky hopes he can be granted the same joy.
“Okay,” you say softly, as if only to yourself, but he catches it and nods reassuringly. “You know, when Sam came with me last week, he actually said that you’re a lot more fun while grocery shopping.”
Bucky’s eyes widen. “I’m more fun to be with while shopping than at home, or I’m more fun to go shopping with than Sam?” He asks, turning in his seat.
“The second one.”
“Did he say why?”
A thoughtful hum, and you bite the inside of your cheek while formulating an appropriate answer. “Something about your old-fashioned sensibilities being offended by the prices nowadays--”
“I am not old-fashioned--”
“-- and he warned me to keep you away from the snack aisle because you, and I quote, lose it at the sight of all those Doritos flavors,” you finish with a teasing smile, directed at the road. With no response to that, he resigns himself to sink back into his seat while crossing his arms and grumbling his displeasure, only to perk up with the sound of your laugh, just as you swing into the parking lot of Trader Joe’s.
One successful grocery round later, and Bucky’s closing the lid on a trunk full of grocery bags, one of which consists only of Doritos. He’s going to open the door for you when you stop him and gesture to the cafe across the street with a sheepish look on your face.
“Hot chocolate?” ¨
“Sure,” he answers, and you lock the door. The place is almost empty, what with it being a couple of hours before lunch on a workday, and you order to hot chocolates to go, explaining that you’re just a few minutes away from Central Park and you wanted to go for a brief walk, if that was okay with him, of course.
The hot chocolates arrive, both with every imaginable topping on them, and Bucky hurries to pull out his wallet despite your protests. “Let’s go,” he says, handing you your cup and praying that he can balance his without spilling over, and holding the door for you as you exit.
New York’s boisterous bustle is dulled by the quiet of winter, the pulsing life of the city hushed as snow starts falling, this November precipitation hopefully a good omen for a white Christmas. This part of town seems to fall silent, and he relishes the peace, the rustle of your jackets as shoulders brush when a rare stranger passes by.
Soon, the city falls away to the expanse of what used to be green but is now just a domesticated snowy tundra -- Central Park. A lone runner sprints across a pathway a hundred yards away, and you sit down on a bench.
“I love New York,” you say with a smile, and Bucky can see the enchantment of this city falling over you as you close your eyes. Less than a month, most of it spent outside the city lines, and you’re falling for the place he knows as home, and it makes him fall in love with it all over again. To see a familiar place through fresh and wondrous eyes is like getting to read a favorite book for the first time -- a privelege few are afforded, but he is fortunate to be amongst them. The way your eyes flit across the sky following a flock of pigeons, the way you inhale the scent of hot chocolate like no place else in the world can produce, and then how your gaze falls to the untouched, sacred blanket of snow in front of you. The ensuing gasp is one he cannot decipher, and so he asks.
“What is it?”
“I just realized I’ve never made snow angels,” you answer, trembling with childish epiphany, and he looks at you like you’ve grown another head. It’s been almost a century since he made his last one, too, at the age of 12, before he had to resist in order to avoid bringing Steve down with him lest the skinny rascal die from the cold.
“Do you,” he begins hesitantly, “do you want to, right now?” The expression on your face is one of barely controlled want and bashfulness at the desire.
“Yeah,” you say after a full minute’s consideration. That’s how Bucky finds himself, despite his issues with the cold, on the ground in a field of snow like a starfish against the ground and waving his arms and legs wildly. Your giggles float to him on a cloud of air, breathless, shaking, and he stops after a while to lay there next to you, the silver bond of a new friendship glowing in the gray daylight.
He’s the first to rise, carefully so as to not disturb the pattern, and he pulls you up after, watches the smile split your face into the fullest crescent moon, warming his insides more than the hot chocolate did. The cold is starting to soak through his clothes, but the pins and needles prickling at his skin soon start to sear with that white heat that comes after touching snow, and he’s warm all over. When you turn to look at him with a thank you on the tip of your tongue, his cheeks pink and eyes icy blue, he smiles back. Thinks he could learn to love the cold, if it comes with companionship like this.

NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of one of the Final Dress Rehearsals. Top notch production and thrilling performances from Alice, Keaton, and the whole cast! This is quite a unique capture since it was the first time the blood was dropped. Too many amazing things to point out here, don't miss this one!!! A+ Well filmed with a nice mix of close-ups and full stage shots and no obstructions. Based on the revised Off-Broadway version, and presented at the Balagan Theatre. Because this was recorded at the final run-through prior to opening night, there are a few “holds” as they worked out any kinks: * After “Evening Prayers” there is a hold to change all microphone batteries, resulting in most of the song being run a second time (the sound check was removed and put as a bonus at the end of act two). * During the scene where Carrie is getting ready for the prom a microphone made a "farting" noise and Alice grabbed her butt and said "sorry" which made the cast and tech crew laugh.

FORMAT:  MP4 (SD)
CAST: Julie Kleiner (Carrie White), Vivienne Cleary (Margaret White), Nina Sturtz (Miss Gardner), Kaily Smith (Chris), Erin Evers (Sue), Blair Late (Tommy)
NOTES: Another abridged version. Video suffers from gen loss but has cleaned up decently. Piano is the only instrument in the orchestra, and it drowns out some of the singers. This has been incorrectly labelled as an authorized production, which is incorrect - this was an unauthorized production (e.g., no rights were secured before the production), though Gore (and Cohen) were in the audience of this performance and chose not to sue Jeff Murphy and Stagedoor over copyright infringement, partly because Gore said he had always wanted to see the show done with actual teenagers (reported by Jeff Murphy, the director).
Carrie: The Musical - Stratford-Upon-Avon - February 16, 1988 (Preview) (Pro-Shot's master)
FORMAT:  MP4 (SD)
CAST: Linzi Hateley (Carrie White), Barbara Cook (Margaret White), Sally Ann Triplett (Sue Snell), Paul Gyngell (Tommy Ross), Charlotte d'Amboise (Chris Hargensen), Gene Anthony Ray (Billy Nolan), Darlene Love (Lynn Gardner)
NOTES: Filmed professionally for the RSC archives on the third night of the performance (February 16, 1988). Shot from first row mezzanine center with no obstructions with audio taken directly from the soundboard. Mostly a full stage shots without zooms. This is usually incorrectly labelled as "Opening Night (February 13, 1988)", which is incorrect, as on opening night, Barbara Cook was almost decapitated right after the set changes from "Don't Waste The Moon", which not seen in this video (also verified by the person who copied this from the archives).

NOTES: Great HD capture of this Judy Garland bio musical focusing on her early years, leading up to The Wizard of Oz, with a couple of fun tap numbers! Act One starts when Judy sings a version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow (same tune but with different lyrics). Act Two starts part way through the number right before they enter the MGM studio. The Cher Show - Broadway - April, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master)

NOTES: Beautiful HD close-ups but some long drop-outs and quite a few obstructed scenes. The rake in the mezzanine at the Neil Simon kinda stinks and I'm pretty sure the ushers were playing flashlight tag with each other the entire show. but I began to care a lot less as the night went on Video is very Cher-centric...choreography in "Dark Lady" is captured beautifully, but for the rest of the show I was mostly focused on getting those Stephanie, Teal, and Micaela zooms. We start at the scene before "Half Breed" and when Stephanie tells everyone to stand up for the finale it's all over for my filming ability.

The DVD has been enhanced with chapter stops for all of the musical numbers. This, along with the tapes of Crazy for You and Passion, is amongst the only three TOFT tapes that have been leaked.

FORMAT:  MP4 (HD)
CAST: Zoe Gertz (Beverley/Annette & others), Douglas Hansell (Kevin T./Garth & others), Richard Piper (Claude & others), Simon Maiden (Oz & others), Sarah Morrison (Janice & others), Nicholas Brown (Kevin J./Ali & others), Nathan Carter (Nick/Doug & others), Katrina Retallick (Diane & others), Sharriese Hamilton (Hannah & others), Emma Powell (Beulah & others), Kellie Rode (Bonnie & others), Kolby Kindle (Bob & others)
NOTES: HD capture of the Australian company of this fantastic musical. Includes a video of a post-show Q&A with the cast in honour of the 18th anniversary of September 12. Shot from the back row of the dress circle, so a head blocks the centre at times but it’s shot around where possible. Most noticeable in the group numbers where a lot of the action is downstage. The first 4 minutes or so is mostly wandering shots as I was setting up my camera and evading ushers. A lot of great close-ups - Zoe’s “Me and the Sky” is a highlight.

NOTES: As far as I know, the first ever video of the Toronto production! I had the entire show in VOB format ready to post but, unfortunately, I lost the USB it was on in the middle of an airport. Luckily I was able to salvage all but thirty minutes of the original footage, so all that's lost is part of the scene after "I Am Here" and a portion of "Somewhere In The Middle Of Nowhere". If you find a USB the size of a thumbnail around Pearson, it's a $5 reward! A flu passed around the cast that they were all just recovering from, and at one point you can see Bev take a tissue out of her pilot's jacket and blow her nose. It explains the large number of understudies on, particularly of interest is that of the role of Hannah being played by a Caucasian actress, which causes her absence for the bus scene and leads to a severely different dynamic I'd not seen the character played as before.

NOTES: The bottom left of the video is slightly obstructed by a lighting rail. The master accidentally stop recording during '38 Planes' but realized right away so it’s only missing a second or two. Some nice close-ups. Clive misses the cue for the first “Welcome to the Rock!”

NOTES: My first video ever. I couldn’t see what I was filming so the camera has a tendency to film upward toward the ceiling. You can hear me laugh pretty loudly since I was holding the camera close to my face.

I JUST REMEMBERED that I had a dream that was a cobra kai s 3 ep1 and aisha got assassinated to explain why she wouldn’t be in the rest of the season and I was so upset. then I was touring a neighborhood of weirdass houses with tahani from the good place and she was explaining how she didn’t really want to be an architect anymore. she went off to talk to micheal and suddenly I was in a MASSIVE trader joes that miguel’s mom ran?? and miguel’s back had already healed and he was hanging out with robby in the store. he would jump over the shelves dividing aisles like it was super easy and then robby would try to do it to but he kept getting stuck. then some random lady put us in her shopping cart and took us to the parking lot, as far away from the store as possible. we got out and sat down next to hawk and maybe aisha who was alive?? and some background cobra kai. and my friend irl cassie. I tried to run back into the store to tell miguel’s mom that we were being kidnapped but the random lady caught me and cassie and took us to a small house near a waterfall that was next to some giant city buildings. we had to stay in a room with some stuffed animal cats and some real cats, some of which I knew and some which were unfamiliar. I went to go to the bathroom but a random man told me I had to crawl if I moved outside of the room. so I crawled into the bathroom but the back wall was taken out and through it I could see a super pink and blue sky with stars, and against it, the waterfall and buildings. I asked the guy if I could have my phone back, not to call for help, but to take a picture because the view was awesome. he let me and watched me as I did. I crawled back to the room cassie and I were being kept in but before I could get there the lady dragged the man away because there was a mysterious van outside. I saw my phone was on the table and I hovered over it indecisively because I could be in major trouble if I was caught using it but I might be rescued if I did. before I could make a decision the lady came and put me back in the room, saying that they were under attack by the van people coming to rescue us. cassie and started gathering up all the cats in a small drawstring bag to take with us and then we ran for the van, which took us away. leshawna from total drama was driving it, and duncan, dj, and geoff were chilling in the back. leshawna said we needed to catch a bus back to los angeles, as we had been taken to new york. our van had morphed into a bus by then, and the boys leapt out the doors and into the doors of a bus that was driving alongside us, bound for la. I got nervous and asked leshawna if we had to go there too, but she steered our bus through the open back of a larger bus and said that we wouldn’t that this bus would take us to la. then the boys hopped in through the doors and were impressed with her driving. it’s funny, because the night before last, I had a dream where courtney from total drama was my dad’s ex girlfriend so she and geoff (her boyfriend) decided to kill off my family. they got the floor plans of our family house from my grandpa, and then they sniped at us through the windows. they shot my brother in the stomach but he just put a bandage on it and continued like it was no big deal. I was terrified and hiding under furniture that whole time, and my mom insisted that I wear a long necklace that had a small silver charm that rested right over my heart, supposedly to stop any bullets from hitting me there. at one point, I figured out that the sniper was on a hill overlooking the house, and I charged up there to scare him away, and suddenly the world looked like it was in minecraft. it’s funny because after I woke up from that dream, I assumed I wouldn't have a wildly absurd and stressful dream for a while, but because my brain is wackadoodle, that clearly wasn’t the case.

Single Dad Jared Headcanons
Tumblr media
1992-1999
- becoming a father was not something on jared’s to-do list, he was still 20 years old (she was born early in the year) but he thought everything would okay if he had the mother of the child on the parenthood journey with him
but everything wasn’t okay
the mother died shortly after delivery
he was heartbroken and now here he is, a 20 year old struggling actor, and now father to a newborn daughter
- plans of moving to new york are now shot as he has to take care of a baby
speaking of
instead he now travels between louisiana and california for auditions
relying on his mom and shannon to watch her while he’s away until he has enough money to rent an apartment so they could move there.
- jared gets work sometime in 1992 and he’s so happy he could cry. finally he has just enough money to get a babysitter and to fly shannon out to la
- he gets minor roles for about a year until my so called life
by now she’s two years old, and already in daycare
the cast and crew always ask about her (let’s give her a name and call her kaela)
which makes him to bring her to set sometimes
they all love her and fawn over her
during his break he reads to her and watches sesame street with her
- by 1995, jared’s career is on full steam and he’s getting roles left and right, eventually landing a movie role.
which means more money coming in and he can finally afford a house
he can take kaela to toys r us and buy her plenty of barbie dolls and other stuff
- he finally feels like he’s able to give his daughter the life she deserves
- maybe this dad thing isn’t so hard after all, he’s managed for three years with no accidents
- until he has to leave to prepare and film for prefontaine
shannon takes care of kaela while he’s away
which isn’t so bad. he’s like a second father to her
but kaela still misses her father and is too young to understand why jared is away all the time
constance visits also; she misses her grandbaby
constance may or not be pressuring shannon about having kids of his own after he sees him drawing in chalk in the driveway one day
- jared and kaela preparing for “big girl school”
she loves picking out her backpack and lunch box
he knows that kaela only needs the 24 pack of crayola crayons but 64 pack WITH THE SHARPENER IN THE BACK is on the shelf above, so he gets the 64 pack
who wouldn’t want to be friends with the kid who has the 64 pack?
- jared being emotional as he drops her off
he obviously sticks out like a sore thumb
every father is either dressed in khakis or in expensive suits with shiny black shoes and gold watches with gelled back hair or clean haircuts
and here’s jared with his longish hair, wearing the t-shirt he wore to bed last night and ripped jeans. he can already tell he won’t have anything in common with any of the parents here
maybe private school wasn’t such a good idea, but it was the school closest to the house
- jared gets bored while kaela’s at school and he doesn’t know what to do with himself
the house is way too quiet
grocery shopping isn’t all that fun without her
neither is cleaning the house
he can’t even get through the day without her, how is he supposed to get through 12 YEARS?
- he gets used to it though when he hears kaela talking about her new friends during dinner
- second grade is easier as he has stuff to do for thirty seconds to mars
they have a routine going
although jared can’t drop her off anymore and kaela now has to take the school bus
he’s a little uncomfortable because now people other than his bandmates and family and friends know where he lives
it also teaches kaela how to be a little more independent and also about time management, so a win-win.
2000-2010
- kaela’s growing up and she’s starting to form an identity outside of jared
she has her group of friends and interests
kaela is definitely a harry potter fan
jared takes her to see the movies
thirty seconds to mars is becoming more successful in the rock world
- kaela is literally growing up right in front of his eyes
she looks just like her mother
oh god, kaela needs a mother
is he ready to start dating again?
he can’t rely on his mom for everything
- kaela starts middle school and jared is FREAKING OUT
valentine’s day in middle school is his worst nightmare
why does she have so many cards from boys???
shannon, solon, and matt teasing him about it
him glaring at any boy who stares at her for too long
- at this point jared is dating cameron diaz
when jared introduces them, kaela doesn’t know what to do
she’s happy for him, and she likes cam a lot but she’s so used to it just being the two of them it feels... odd
they do get along though
kaela being there for jared when he and cameron breaks up
- jared now considers middle school as a cake walk compared to high school
he has to restrain himself from choking fans his daughter’s age when they comment about her
of course the media also notices how stunning the leto girl is becoming
even more valentine’s day cards from boys
yes, my daughter is very pretty now stop staring at her, boy in front of us in the trader joe’s checkout line
- just because jared’s easy going in his interviews doesn’t mean he’ll be easy going on the guy trying to take his daughter away from him
okay, maybe not take her away from him, more like date
he’s definitely a chaperone on dates
if jared’s not available then shannon goes
- kaela having her first boyfriend is very emotional for jared
he’s jared’s worst nightmare, the stereotypical l.a. rich kid. seriously kaela, wtf are you thinking?
he’s lowkey manipulative af (let’s call him brandon)
like that time kaela got asked to promote a clothing line. jared was happy for her, brandon, not so much
thankfully kaela dumped him before senior year
- speaking of senior year
kaela is busier than ever. she’s filling out college applications and going to college interviews every time he turns around
jared doesn’t have to pay schools to get kaela a spot in school unlike certain celeb parents. kaela works for everything she has, thank you very much
- when graduation is around the corner, he’s an emotional wreck
invitations have been sent
kaela already has a school picked out, louisiana state university to be exact
it’s also closer to constance if she needs to get away sometimes
and also closer to her mom’s side (jared knows about kaela contacting relatives from her mom’s side, and he’s happy that his daughter is getting to know them)
- jared and shannon almost fighting other parents to get the perfect shots of their kids
did i forget to mention that kaela’s valedictorian?
jared being so incredibly proud of his little girl who is not a little girl anymore
hearing his daughter’s full name and seeing her walk across the stage brings him to tears
her mom would be so proud
he knows that kaela’ s going to be successful no matter what she chooses to do in life
present
- kaela is absolutely stunning; she’s in her 20s now and the media always do those transformation things complete with slideshows
she chose a profession that she loves and is passionate about
jared, shannon, constance and everyone else are so proud of her
it requires her to travel A LOT so jared has a hard time keeping track but they talk/facetime every week
kaela being in the city of angels video and it also showed pictures and videos of her growing up
kaela being best friends with chloe since jared introduced them
-kaela is also instagram goals
she’s friends with plenty of celebs and has a good following on social media
kaela still has her own life and career that’s not in the entertainment industry
but damn does she know how to take a good selfie
- kaela helping her uncle with his coffee company
she works pop up shops around the country if she’s able to do it
kaela and shannon are partners in crime
they also drum together too
shannon being a Proud Uncle
is this really the same kid who he used to push on the swing sets and watch disney movies with?
- no matter how old kaela gets, she’s always gonna be jared’s little girl.

     By    Patrick Martin
       3 December 2018
Former President George H. W. Bush died late Friday at the age of 94. Born into a ruling class family of wealth and privilege, he lived a life a world away from the struggles and sufferings of the working class.
In his decades as a political representative of American imperialism, the most murderous and reactionary force on the planet, Bush helped insure that millions of people around the world did not have a chance to live the full and comfortable life he led. Instead, they were shot to death, bombed or otherwise annihilated by the armed forces of the United States, or starved, jailed or tortured by governments backed by the CIA and doing the bidding of Washington.
Few people in recent American history have had so long a record of “service” to the US ruling elite and its state machine. Few have participated in the crimes of American imperialism in so many ways: legislator, diplomat, CIA director, commander-in-chief. As a member of Congress for four years, 1967-71, Bush voted repeatedly to fund the war in Vietnam. As US ambassador to the United Nations, 1971-72, he was the public voice of the United States government, defending its crimes in Southeast Asia before a world audience. As US envoy to China in 1974-75, he carried out the Kissinger policy of wooing Chinese Stalinism as a counterweight to the USSR. As CIA director in 1975-76, he oversaw Operation Condor, the joint venture in the assassination of leftists conducted by the CIA and the US-backed military regimes in Chile, Argentina, Brazil and other Latin American countries.
While vice president in the Reagan administration (1981-1989), he was complicit in the terrorist “contra” war against Nicaragua and the death squad operations in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, in which hundreds of thousands died, as well as the dispatch of US troops to Lebanon, the invasion of Grenada and the bombing of Libya. In the first year of his presidency he ordered the invasion of Panama and in the final year the occupation of Somalia. In between came the greatest crime of all, the waging of the first Persian Gulf War, deliberately instigated by the Bush administration, in which hundreds of thousands of Iraqi conscripts were incinerated by US bombs and missiles.
Bush’s political record at home was less openly murderous but equally reactionary. He was a consummate political cynic. While his father Prescott Bush, a Wall Street banker and Republican senator from Connecticut, had been a social moderate, George H. W. Bush tailored his political positions to the reactionary climate of Texas in the period before the dismantling of Jim Crow segregation. In his first campaign for office, as the Republican candidate for US Senate in Texas in 1964, Bush ran as a Goldwaterite, opposing the 1964 Civil Rights Act as an infringement on freedom (to discriminate) and condemning the impending establishment of Medicare as “socialistic.” He later denounced “the militant Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”
As chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1973-74, Bush defended Richard Nixon throughout the Watergate crisis. After memorably branding the supply-side policies advanced by Ronald Reagan as “voodoo economics,” during the contest for the 1980 Republican presidential nomination, Bush worked assiduously to become Reagan’s running mate. As vice president, he supported all the right-wing domestic measures of the Reagan administration, from the firing of the PATCO air traffic controllers in 1981 to the deregulation of business, cuts in social programs and tax reductions for the wealthy and big business.
In the 1988 presidential campaign, Bush pledged a “kindler, gentler” America, implicitly acknowledging the brutality of the Reagan administration’s onslaught on the poor and the working class. But his campaign unleashed the Willie Horton ad against his Democratic opponent Michael Dukakis, which used the image of a black convict who had committed rape and armed burglary during a weekend furlough from a Massachusetts prison to paint Dukakis as soft on crime. This brazen appeal to racism was part a deliberate effort to cement the gains of the Nixon-Reagan “southern strategy,” which recruited racist elements in that region, formerly dominated by the Democrats, and made it the stronghold of the Republican Party.
The Bush presidency carried forward right-wing policies in both foreign and domestic areas. Bush bailed out the savings & loan industry at taxpayer expense—his son Neil was a prominent executive of a failed S&L—while seeking to slash spending for domestic social programs. He suffered a political embarrassment when he inadvertently revealed his distance from the daily experiences of ordinary Americans by expressing surprise at the use of barcode readers in a supermarket.
In 1991, he nominated the ultra-rightist Clarence Thomas to the US Supreme Court to replace the retiring Thurgood Marshall. As he left office in January 1993, Bush issued pardons for Caspar Weinberger, Reagan’s secretary of defense, and five other officials who had been indicted or convicted for their roles in the Iran-Contra scandal.
But it was in foreign policy that his administration made its mark and established its “legacy” in the eyes of the American ruling elite. The Bush presidency coincided with the collapse of Stalinism, beginning in Eastern Europe in 1989 and culminating in the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. Weekend obituaries hailed Bush for adroit management of the crisis, although in truth he had little to do beyond accepting the surrender of Soviet Stalinist leader Mikhail Gorbachev. His one distinctive contribution was the decision to back the reunification of Germany in 1990 over the objections of British Prime Minister Thatcher and French President Mitterrand, both of whom feared the consequences of the reemergence of Germany as a world power in the center of the continent.
The implications of the dissolution of the Soviet Union for world politics were laid bare in the crisis that erupted after Iraq’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait in August 1990. The Reagan administration had backed Saddam Hussein during the bloody Iran-Iraq War of 1980-88, and Bush continued this policy, even hinting in July 1990, through a US envoy, that the US was neutral on Saddam’s border clash with Kuwait, which was siphoning oil from Iraq’s Rumailah oilfield. Saddam seized Kuwait, but soon found himself caught in a trap, as hundreds of thousands of US and allied soldiers were mobilized to the Arabian Peninsula along with hundreds of warplanes and warships armed with cruise missiles.
When the war began in January 1991, it was a one-sided slaughter of the soldiers of a Third World country by the most powerful military force on the planet. But Bush decided not to expand the war by marching on Baghdad, in part because Saddam Hussein was still viewed as a counterweight against Iran, but even more because he was allied to the Soviet Union, whose existence provided a check on US military options that no longer existed by the time Bush’s son entered the White House ten years later.
The atmosphere in the George H. W. Bush White House during this time was one of imperialist triumphalism, summed up in Bush’s pledge to create a “New World Order.” Bush’s former defense secretary Richard Cheney, who was vice president under George W. Bush, gave a glimpse of this mood during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” program on Sunday. Cheney recalled fondly the budget process of the George H. W. Bush administration when the president and his top aides set spending levels. “When it was time to put the budget together,” he said, “defense came first. We’d decide what the top line was going to be for defense, and I was free to go spend that. Then everybody else got what was left. That’s a great way to operate, if you’re secretary of defense.”
There was little truth about this record of reaction and militarism in the obituary published by the New York Times, which ran to 10,000 words, or the similar 6,000-word tribute in the Washington Post. The two leading US newspapers set the tone for the reverential media coverage, which will continue at full blast on cable television through Wednesday’s national day of mourning. This will be a day off for bankers, stock traders and capitalist politicians, but not for most workers, a class difference that is peculiarly appropriate for this particular dead president.
All sections of the US political establishment joined hands to sing the praises of George H. W. Bush. The Trump White House, whose occupant has made no secret of his hatred of the Bush family, released a statement hailing Bush’s leadership during the “peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War,” adding, “ As president, he set the stage for the decades of prosperity that have followed.” Enrichment for Wall Street, of course, not the working class.
The Democrats were even more fervent in their declarations, in part seeking to contrast Bush with the current president, even as they seek “common ground” with Trump’s fascistic rants.
Former President Obama said that America “has lost a patriot and humble servant,” calling Bush’s life “a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling.”
Former President Bill Clinton said in a statement that he considered Bush’s friendship “one of my life’s greatest gifts.” In an op-ed piece in the Washington Post, Clinton gushed: “He was an honorable, gracious and decent man who believed in the United States, our Constitution, our institutions and our shared future. And he believed in his duty to defend and strengthen them, in victory and defeat.”
Other Democrats chimed in: “He set the standard for decency,” said Thomas A. Daschle, the former Senate majority leader. Former Vice President Joe Biden described Bush as “decent, kind and welcoming.”
Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who entered Congress shortly before Bush became president, called him “a gentleman of the highest integrity and deepest patriotism,” and said it was a privilege to work with him. She added that Bush demonstrated “great humility, unwavering compassion, deep faith, and extraordinary kindness in and out of the political arena.”

Fact and Fiction in Trading Places
Note:  This is the first of what I hope are many postings about movies that are based on the financial world.  As a long time industry professional I’ve noticed there are always things in movies about the financial world that get things right and others that are pure fiction. The idea here is to separate the two, but also spark civilized discussion about how the industry I love is depicted in movies.
Overview
Trading Places debuted in 1983 and is a story about a homeless con man and director of a commodity brokerage firm having their circumstances changed based on a social experiment conducted by the owners of a commodity brokerage firm.  They take Eddie Murphy’s character (con man) and put him in charge of their firm while ruining Dan Aykroyd’s (managing director) life to see if success is based on breeding (their words) or circumstances.
Pork Bellies
Yes, Pork Bellies are a real thing.  I was actually in Los Angeles around Christmas time a few years ago.  Andy Milder (Weeds, Austin & Ally) and a young guy were sitting at table next to me at dinner.  The young guy with Milder was actually ripping on this movie and one statement was, “it’s bullshit, they don’t really trade things like pork bellies or orange juice”.  It was all I could do not to lean over and get into the conversation, in fact overhearing that conversation was a catalyst behind staring this blog.  Both did trade at that time, however Pork Bellies were delisted by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) in 2011 due to lack of interest. Orange Juice Futures continue to trade at the IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), but at the time of the movie traded at the New York Board of Trade which was physically attached to the World Trade Center buildings.
So, early in the movie starts with a focus on the Pork Bellies market.   The quote, “Pork Bellies, I knew it” from Louis Winthorpe (Dan Aykroyd) has been repeated millions of times by traders around the world. However, the movie takes a turn, out of nowhere, to focus on the Orange Juice market.  The long term rumor in Chicago is that the CME changed their mind about allowing access to their floor for trading, possibly after seeing the nature of the movie script, so something that traded at a different exchange was substituted for Pork Bellies.   Maybe if CME had allowed access to the Pork Bellies pit that market would still be trading today.
Crop Reports
The price of anything is based on supply and demand.  In the case of agricultural crops, the supply side is based on growing season.  The US Department of Agricultural Statistics Service Florida Field Office periodically releases an update on the progress of the growing seasons for oranges.  Info on this report can be found at  USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service Florida Field Office Citrus Production Forecast.  This is the report that moves the market in the climactic scene at the end of the movie.
The Bet
Randolph (Ralph Bellamy) and Mortimer Duke (Don Ameche) run a commodity brokerage firm and they make a bet on whether success is based on breeding (again, their words) or circumstances. Lots has been written on the inspiration for the actual bet.  Around the same time as the movie two well known traders in Chicago, Richard Dennis and Bill Eckhardt, conducted an experiment to see if trading could be taught.  They hired individuals through a Wall Street Journal ad and trained them to be traders. Dennis felt anyone could be taught to successfully trader while Eckhardt felt successful traders have a special knack for trading that can’t be taught.  Michael Covel does a wonderful job covering this in his book The Complete Turtle Trader also the rules they taught the traders can be found here Original Turtles Fighting Scams, Frauds, and Charlatans.
 Some Perspective on Numbers
Since the movie was made in 1983, some of the numbers don’t sound all that impressive.  To give some perspective I’ve adjusted numbers to 2018 dollars based on inflation.  Early on the Dukes make about $347,000 extra by being patient on a Pork Bellies trade which is about $878,000 in 2018 dollars.   Later, the Dukes give Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) a salary of $80,000 a year, that’s about $200,000 in 2018 after being adjusted for inflation.   Ophelia note she’s got $42,000 in T-Bills earning interest, today’s interest rates are very low, but in 1983 3-month T-Bill rates were in the 8% to 9% range. Finally at the end of the movie the $394 million margin call the Dukes are expected to pay would be about $985 million in 2018.
Behavioral Finance
At one point in the movie Pork Bellies contract prices are dropping and the Dukes decide to try to buy on the lower pricing.  Billy Ray intervenes with a discussion of how traders are panicking.  He states that traders are losing money and won’t be able to buy the GI Joe with a Kung Fu Grip for their kid for Christmas along with another illustration of why they are panicking.  There’s a lot of truth to what he’s saying about the behavior of traders and anyone that was on a trading floor back in the day can attest to this. His insights were cutting edge at the time as behavioral finance had not really caught on in the mainstream as it has today.
 Frank Oz
Not financial, but something I like to share.  The police officer that interrogates Winthrop and plants drugs on him is played by Frank Oz who is the voice of many of the muppets including Miss Piggy.  Since the movie was originally going to focus on the Pork Bellies market I find a little irony in this.
Trading Floor
Tumblr media
This is where those that use to be on a trading floor pay particular attention.  In 1983 trading was still an open outcry endeavor so the floor was packed with people in various trading pits.   The movie does a good job of capturing the electricity of the trading floor when Winthorp and Valentine first walk on the floor.  The scenes before their pit scene are from real trading activity.  Also, the variety of physical activity based on the stress of being a floor trader is shown, but I believe downplayed for sensitive viewers when they are in the bathroom before the trading day.
Several movies that depict floor trading have had individuals just show up and trade.  There’s an approval process to become a member of an exchange and the process takes some time.  It is doubtful they could get trading access in the short period of time covered in the movie.  Also, the legal trouble and financial status of both would probably exclude them from actually ever being able to trade on an exchange floor.
The trader for the Dukes is doing a good job replicating the hand signals despite being an actor (Richard Hunt – who is also the voice of several of the muppets).  Also, when a floor trader notices the Dukes watching the price action their response is pretty accurate as well.  Back in floor trading days successful traders activity would be noted by other traders.  Also, if a well know industry figure is lurking around it would be noticed.
The falsified crop report given to the Dukes indicates that weather is having a negative impact on the growing season.  Therefore they have instructed their trader to buy as less supply of oranges will drive the price higher.  The actual report is that weather hasn’t impacted the crop and the result is a quick drop in prices.  This is why our heroes are selling, but also why they wait to sell as the Duke’s broker and presence pushes the price up.
When the report is delivered in real life it would be a headline from a press release.  The scene with the Secretary of Agriculture on TV is for dramatic effect.  When different government agencies release statistics it is normally done through a press release which appears on the news feed on various quote services.
Trading Places does a pretty good job depicting the reality of how the markets function, especially the commodity markets.  In the early 1980’s floor trading dominated the commodity markets and the movie’s depiction of the floor is spot on.

Talea Beer Co. Is Redefining Craft Beer With a Gender-Neutral Approach
Tumblr media
This article is a part of our inaugural Next Wave Awards. For the full list of 2021 winners, check out the whole series here.
Talea Beer Co. co-founders Tara Hankinson (“Ta”) and LeAnn Darland (“Lea”) are small brewery owners with big plans. Formerly colleagues at Hopsy, a beer growler delivery startup, the two discovered that from disparate paths — Hankinson most recently from The New York Times, following marketing consulting roles for Brooklyn Winery and Wolffer Estate Vineyards; and Darland from Google and earlier in her career, the U.S. Navy — they found themselves staring down the same dream: to create a beer brand that felt welcoming to them as women in a male-dominated industry.
Armed with MBAs, beer experience, and homebrewing skills, they established Talea Beer Co.’s LLC in 2018. In 2019, Talea launched its contract-brewed beer brand and quickly had relationships at local retailers — and shelf space at Whole Foods.
In that first year, Talea established itself as New York City’s first wholly female-founded, female-focused beer brand. They did this by offering “easy-to-love” beer styles — the trendy yet approachable flagship Sun Up Hazy IPA soon listed among VinePair’s best summer beers 2019, along with a suite of fruited sour ales, from the approachable Raspberry Crush Gose to the mouth-puckering, cocktail-inspired Tart Deco tropical IPA series, all with bright and colorful cans designed by I Want Design.
In March 2021, Talea unveiled its first brick-and-mortar brewery and taproom in Brooklyn, N.Y. Spread across a highly trafficked corner of residential Williamsburg, Talea’s space is a 9,000-square-foot accomplishment in airy architecture and stunning interior design (both by Sarah Carpenter of Carpenter and Mason).
Colors splash across the spacious taproom from the tables to the tiled walls. Concealed in the back is a 6,000-square-foot brewery that is now churning out all Talea beer (formerly contract-brewed at Torch and Crown in the Bronx, all Talea beer is now produced in-house, according to the co-founders).
The space is an intentionally “bright, airy respite from the city,” Hankinson says, to welcome women as well as men, with equal attention paid to the Instagramming Saturday brunch set and bona fide beer nerds.
In August, Talea partnered with Union Beer Distributors and more than tripled its distribution footprint, adding to chain retailers including Trader Joe’s, and a current trial with Costco.
Now seven months in, “I feel like we’re hitting our groove,” Hankinson says. The brewery is producing about 1,500 barrels of a 4,000-barrel capacity this year, “so there’s room to grow,” Darland says. Grow, it will: The brewery projects producing closer to 3,000 barrels next year, and plans to add enough tanks to increase capacity to between 8,000 and 10,000 barrels per year.
Beyond the brewhouse, Talea plans to open a second taproom on Bergen Street (bordering the Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill neighborhoods in Brooklyn) next year — and its plans don’t stop there. Leveraging the Farm Brewer license privileges, which allow New York brewers up to five locations in the state, they’re “looking at locations” in Manhattan and in the Hamptons to expand to in the next two to three years, Darland says.
What is truly innovative about Talea Beer Co. is far more than meets the eye, or even the lips: Darland and Hankinson take a 360-degree approach to making the brewery accessible for its customers, as well as its 30-plus employees, including physically.
“No one is expected to lift a half-barrel keg on their own. We bought equipment to do that,” Darland says. “We’ve also come up with ways for short or smaller people in general to lift 50-pound grain bags. It doesn’t take too much creativity to do this.” At a recent forklift training for six employees, “the forklift trainer said he’d never had an all-female group before,” Darland says. (She quotes a common refrain too many female forklift operators hear from distributors: “Go get the forklift guy.”)
“Everyone is cross-trained in at least three to four front-of-house roles,” Hankinson says. “It’s a lot more training and hand holding and coaching,” she admits, but it’s one of the many ways Talea “breaks down the barrier between front of house and back of house.”
Currently, two front-of-house employees are transitioning to back-of-house roles in the brewery. And additional opportunities for employees include a monthly “brewery 101” and beer tastings.
The point of all of this is “making sure everyone can do every role here,” Darland says. In doing this, the company is proving that the way to free the “pipeline” that prevents female involvement in the industry is as simple as investing in the tools that make it possible.

Shared love of trains brings Johnson and Biden together
Shared love of trains brings Johnson and Biden together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boris Johnson paid tribute to Joe Biden’s well-attested love of the railways by choosing a sleek silver Amtrak train to travel between New York and Washington for his first White House visit as prime minister.
The mode of travel was not only a hat-tip to Mr Biden’s decades of rail commuting as senator and vice-president between his Delaware home and the capital, but also a physical reminder of the main purpose of Johnson’s US trip – to drum up support for carbon emission reductions and polluting car use.
He was rewarded for his gesture with a rambling anecdote from the president as the two of them sat down together in the Oval Office.
In comments which bore the hallmark of having been rehearsed many, many times over the years, the president told Mr Johnson how an Amtrak conductor had approached him to say that he and his colleagues had calculated that over the years, he’d covered more than 2 million miles on the route.
As panicky reporters shuddered at the thought that their precious few minutes with the two leaders were about to be swallowed up in their entirety by the older man’s reminiscences, the PM stepped in to steer the conversation back onto matters of policy, telling the president how much he shared his “belief in transport infrastructure”.
The three-hour, 225-mile journey from New York to Washington, snaking through the stunning countryside of coastal Maryland with stops in Philadelphia and Baltimore, was a rare break from the conference room and debating chamber for the prime minister in a three-day trip which has been totally dominated by climate change.
Unlike on previous trips, the deadly serious purpose of his visit prevented Mr Johnson from indulging in the usual photo-opportunities which have seen him don hard hats, try his hand at various sports or dance with local beauties in the hope of a bit of positive publicity.

Instead, his attendance at the United Nations General Assembly has involved an endless sequence of 30-minute bilateral meetings with countries ranging from Ukraine to Colombia, along with a roundtable discussion with countries threatened by the impact of rising temperatures and topped off by a keynote speech on Wednesday in which he will plead with fellow leaders to come up with the emission-cutting pledges he needs to make his COP26 summit in Glasgow a success.
There was palpable relief in the UK contingent when Biden doubled his $5.6bn climate finance and the Chinese promised not to build any more polluting coal-fired power stations abroad (though notably not halting the construction of a plant a week at home). Normally poker-faced COP26 president Alok Sharma could barely suppress a smirk as the news of the American offer seeped out.
Johnson himself has been in ebullient mood, visibly relieved to be freed of the bounds of Covid restrictions and allowed back into the hurly-burly of in-person political life on which he thrives.
Though both he and the president wore black face-masks for their 90-minute chat in the Oval Office, Johnson’s first major international trip since the Biarritz summit of 2019 was characterised by a level of mingling and face-to-face interaction which feels unusual after the era of the Zoom conference.
The fact that in his public comments, Biden effectively sounded the death-knell for Johnson’s long-cherished dream of a UK/US free trade deal, as well as admonishing the PM once more for allowing Brexit to put stability in Ireland at risk, did not appear to have soured the prime minister’s trip.
He presented the president with a signed copy of astronaut Tim Peake’s plea for the protection of the planet Hello, Is This Planet Earth, while Mr Biden gave him a framed photo of their earlier meeting in Cornwall in June and a White House-branded watch
As he departed the White House for dinner with Australian counterpart Scott Morrison, the mood in Johnson’s camp was that he was delighted to be back on the world stage and to have been given reason to hope that his next major appearance – as chair of the Cop gathering – will end in success.
