Sometimes its common that some films comes out without my knowledge, particularly non-Hollywood English language films. This British film was about a wealthy couple from the New York, especially the husband who tries his best to fulfill his seriously ill wife’s dream to be an opera singer. The problem is she’s not any good. Not just him, but everybody who is close to them and once laughed at her, try to understand them and give their support. But not all the occasion seems to remain the same. So on one such a big event, the disaster strikes and how it affects the couple is the rest of the tale to disclose. A very surprising film. I thought it was just a comedy like it brings small smiles on our face, but I laughed out loud on many occasions. This is definitely a right time, because I felt like it was a music and cinematic version of the American presidential candidate Don Trump. Yep, there not much difference, but still this ...

DUKE JORDAN, PIONNIER DU BEBOP

Né le 1er avril 1922 à New York, Irving Sidney "Duke" Jordan a été élevé à Brooklyn et a fréquenté le Boys High School. Jordan a commencé à étudier le piano classique à l’âge de huit ans. Huit ans plus tard, Jordan avait joué dans un groupe scolaire au Brooklyn Automotive High. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme d’études secondaires en 1939, Jordan s’était joint au septet du joueur de trombone Steve Pulliam. Durant l‘été, le groupe avait remporté un prix dans le cadre d’un concours d’amateurs à l’Exposition mondiale de New York, ce qui avait attiré l’attention du productreur John Hammond qui avait été particulièrement impressionné par le talent de Jordan. Le groupe avait poursuivi ses activités durant un an ou deux. À ce moment-là, Jordan était entré dans la phase la plus productive de son apprentissage.

En 1941, le jazz traversait une période de renaissance. À l’époque où Jordan avait commencé à travailler dans un club de Harlem, le bebop était en pleine effervescence dans plusieurs clubs du haut de la ville. Le groupe de Jordan était officiellement dirigé par Clark Monroe, un vétéran des clubs de nuit qui était également impliqué dans l’opération de plusieurs autres boîtes, dont la Uptown House où Charlie Parker avait fait ses débuts à New York. Avant de se tourner vers le bebop, Jordan avait aussi joué dans des groupes de swing.

Jordan, qui s’était familiarisé avec le jazz en écoutant les disques de Teddy Wilson et d’Art Tatum, avait été rapidement mis en contact avec la musique de Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie et Charlie Parker. Avec Powell, Monk, Al Haig, Billy Taylor et George Wallington, Jordan avait été un des premiers pianistes à jouer du bebop. Durant un certain temps, Jordan s’était produit avec Coleman Hawkins au Kelly's Stable. Par la suite, Jordan avait travaillé durant un an avec un groupe appelé les Savoy Sultans. Le groupe était appelé ainsi parce qu’il avait été engagé comme orchestre-résident du célèbre Savoy Ballroom.

Impressionné par le talent et jeu imaginatif de Jordan, Charlie Parker avai décidé de l’engager avec son quintet. Les autres membres du groupe étaient Miles Davis à la trompette, Tommy Potter à la trompette et Max Roach à la batterie. De 1946 à 1948, Jordan avait travaillé avec le quintet de Parker de façon intermittente. Plusieurs enregistrements de Jordan réalisés avec le groupe de Parker de 1947 à 1948 pour les disques Dial et Savoy sont devenus des classiques du jazz, dont  “Embraceable You”, “Crazeology”, "Dewey Square", "Bongo Bop", "Bird of Paradise" et “Scrapple From the Apple.”

Après avoir quitté le groupe de Parker à l’automne 1948, Jordan avait joué avec les saxophonistes Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Stan Getz et Coleman Hawkins. Jordan, qui avait aussi formé son propre quartet, a également composé une partie de la bande sonore du film ‘’Les Liaisons Dangereuses’’ de Roger Vadim en 1959.

À partir du milieu des années 1950, Jordan avait également poursuivi une carrière sous son propre nom. Arrivant à peine à rejoindre les deux bouts avec sa carrière de musicien, Jordan avait dû cependant gagner sa vie comme chauffeur de taxi à New York au milieu des années 1960. Au cours de cette période, Jordan avait surtout joué et enregistré en trio. La plus célèbre composition de Jordan, intitulée  "Jordu", était devenue un standard du jazz lorsque le trompettiste Clifford Jordan l’avait incluse dans son répertoire.

En 1952, à une époque où les mariages interraciaux étaient plutôt rares, Jordan avait épousé la chanteuse de jazz Sheila Jordan. Finalement, la dépendance de Jordan envers les narcotiques avait eu raison de son mariage. Le couple, qui avait divorcé en 1962, avait eu une fille, Tracey J. Jordan. La chanteuse avait déclaré plus tard qu’un de ses plus grands regrets était que son mari n’avait jamais vraiment connu sa fille. Sheila avait expliqué:

‘’Duke was never there for us. I was legally married, but he was a junkie, and he needed to be anywhere he could get his fix. I kept thinking he was going to get better, but he didn’t. He would babysit for me, and one day I came back and Tracey was alone. He’d gone out to get his fix. I realized this guy had been going out all the time and leaving this baby alone! Finally, he just disappeared, and that was it. {...} It’s too bad, because Tracey called him and she finally got in touch with him just before he died, and they sort of had like a little relationship going. But yeah, it was sad that he didn’t get to know Tracey, because I think he would have been very proud of her.’’

La dépendance de Jordan envers l’héroïne remontait au milieu des années 1960. Après être venu à bout de sa dépendance, Jordan s’est installé à Copenhague en 1975. Jordan ayant enregistré une série d’albums pour la compagnie danoise Steeplechase en 1973, cela expliquait sans doute son intérêt pour le Danemark. En 1978, Jordan s’est installé à Valby, en banlieue de Copenhague. C’est là qu’il est mort le 8 août 2006. Il avait seulement quarante-quatre ans.

Duke Jordan est toujours demeuré fidèle au bebop et ne semble pas avoir modifié son style jusqu’à sa mort.

Selling Yarns 3: Weaving the nation's story was a four-day event that presented a conference, a market day, workshops, an exhibition and associated activities program, and launched the inaugural Indigenous Art Film program. As the premier national forum for Indigenous textile and fibre in the country it was supported by the Centenary of Canberra, drawing people to the nation's capital from across the country.

Thirty Indigenous communities and art centres and 134 artists from every state and territory in Australia converged in Canberra to participate in Selling Yarns 3: Weaving the nation's story. Indigenous artists and elders, and art administrators, came together and participated as speakers, workshop facilitators and market stall holders to share their stories, exchange their knowledge and skills, and to trade. They opened their hearts to each other and to other conference delegates and visitors. As Tim Growcott so eloquently stated post conference:

"An authentic spirit of reconciliation coursed strongly throughout the four days, with so many stories and examples of practical collaborations and life- changing projects. The conference was a recognition of the important and sensitive work being accomplished by like-minded creators, forging links with the living past and forming models for healing into the future."

The project was a huge success, inspiring artists and creating strategic alliances between Indigenous communities across Australia. There has been significant cross cultural engagement and inspiration with international Indigenous artists and culture which paves the way for lasting relationships with opportunities to develop further collaborations and joint projects. Establishing dialogue and sharing cross-cultural exchanges with international artists, curators and researchers has placed Australian Indigenous textile practice within the broader international arena.
