oh my god this is why in Man in Glass Nureyev asked Juno to "call me what you used to" instead of saying his own name and relaxed when Juno could say it unprompted...

Just saying, this revelation of Nureyev's guilt says a lot about how he offers to leave Mars with Juno.

I've never read his offer as an intentional ultimatum. To me, it never read like "You have to come with me or you will never see me again"- to me, it has always sounded more like "I know this is my fault. I'm so sorry. I'd like it if you left with me, but if you blame me (as I think you should, because this was my idea, my plan that failed, my inability to save you) for what's happened, I will not force myself into your life. You deserve distance from me if it's what you want."

Especially because this is not the first time he percieves a lover's permanent injury and life-altering change as being his fault.

The fucking. Gut punch. That was that last journal entry. Nureyev lived a Whole Life with Slip that just… never existed. And since he woke up, his life has been focused entirely on just stealing enough to stave off the debts he acquired trying to keep Slip alive

And! He!! Fell!! In love!!! With Juno!!!! He is in love with Juno. His life for two decades was focused only on the possibility of saving the life of the man he loved and lost, and then he met Juno Steel, and he handed him power over everything. Not just his own freedom, but the ability to keep paying off the debt that was keeping his first love alive.

Relistened to What Lies Beyond (part 1) today and had a terrible thought during the wedding vows...

Knowing what we know now about Slip and the Executives and what they did to Nureyev, what do you think was going through his mind when Buddy said this:

When Buddy describes feeling as though she's in a dream? I can imagine the panic, the kick of his flight response. That's the last thing he really hears from them before he disappears. It's almost a confirmation that he can't stay, he doesn't belong here.

And he probably shares Buddy's fear, that he'll wake up one day and find out that he's been tricked again, that Juno and the rest of the Family were all just another dream. A pretty lie, a fabrication of his mind.

maybe it's a little meta joke about all the listeners making from of the kissing noises in season 1

nureyev: here is the story of what happened to me after i was forced to kill my father, how i was on the run for months and lost my will to live, how my life was saved by a childhood friend who i loved but found myself unable to trust because of my trauma, how i allowed myself to be put in an induced coma in order to escape my home planet, and each painful detail of my past that has led me to be the man i am today–all of which i am almost definitely explaining so as to set the scene for why i’m currently in debt and why i had to steal from the family and vanish, aka the question that you clearly want an answer to

After Final Resting Place, a lot of fic writers grappled with whether Nureyev intended his invitation to sound like an ultimatum (run away with me now or I'll leave forever) and usually they fell on the side of him not meaning it quite that way.

Following the Next Page I propose that is WAS an ultimatum, just not for Juno, for Nureyev.

He couldn't stay, he couldn't stop, but he loved Juno. His only hope was that Juno willing to get on that ride. It was selfish, but it was his only chance. Now Nureyev is asking the opposite of Juno for the exact same reasons. He loves him.

I think it's particularly interesting when you see Juno as the main thing that's changed.

S2 starts with Juno recovering from an injury, isolated, a job gone wrong and missing Nureyev. S4 starts pretty much the same way except that Nureyev was the one who left not Juno.

Ramses/Jack says in S2 that Juno fails at being a hero because the way he throws himself into danger is more about self-destruction than it is self-sacrifice and it's one of the few times that he's completely right.

S4 Juno is still putting himself in danger, but not without weighing the options. The first thing S4 Juno does is reach out to someone for help, even though he isn't sure who he can trust. He goes to Puck and then to Mick instead of trying to punish himself by doing it alone.

S2 Juno escapes a prison by putting what might be a gun to his own head and pulling the trigger. S4 Juno escapes a prison after refusing to give up.

When confronting Dark Matters and Sasha, Juno was willing to sacrifice himself for the crew, but sacrificing himself wasn't the point. It was so much easier to save other people when he wasn't spending as much energy trying to kill himself.

There's this line in Greywarren by Maggie Stiefvater like "self-hatred is an expensive hobby paid for by other people" and Juno's character is a thesis on that hypothesis.

Now that the TPP finale is officially out, can we talk about how many people Juno has saved this season? It's kind of the reverse of season 2 in a way, where death and disaster followed him everywhere.

Derek Mathers, Mick (kinda), Rita, Puck, Buddy, Vespa, Jet, the Ruby 7, and even after everything she'd put him through, Sasha Wire. Oh, and everyone across the galaxy with radiation sickness. No big deal.

And all of it was building up to him deciding to save one person in particular...

I love this season.

Hello hello I'm back again thinking about when Nureyev asked Juno to take a peak at his memories in Angel of Brahma. Of all the things he could've witnessed, he stumbles into the ordeal with MAG and the Guardian Angel System. But he had the potential to see literally any point of Peter's entire LIFETIME spent with Slip. And just imagine... that could've changed the whole story, oh my gosh.

look look, you're not wrong and it was funny

but if I can offer a tiny defense of poor Juno (who'd had a tough month) one time he swallowed a rock and spontaneously developed mind-reading, another time a soup obsessed old lady grew tentacles and tried to kill him, and another time he drove out of town for like 72 hours and came back to his whole home neighbourhood having been demolished and rebuilt and everyone was running on mind control chips. That's without talking about the shapeshifting robot.

But how the hell did you not realize Peter was describing a bad trip? Listening to him get all pouty about the impossibilities was great, but come on my guy. We're working with the same amount of info here, and I sussed that out back when Peter walked out into an empty town.

Used up all his brain sticking it to Dark Matters, nothing left to use on his boyfriend.
