one thing i keep coming back to is the fight scene in the council room from s208 because it just tells us SO much about viktor. when he enters the room in his avatar he catwalks in. he moves with so much elegance and so much confidence. the way he pins jayce by the wrist and then slowly wraps his fingers around jayce’s hammer. the way he wraps his legs around jayce and cups his face and brushes his fingers over his lips. the way when he’s towering over jayce in the astral plane he calls him *his* partner for the first time.

we’re seeing who viktor is when he inhabits a body that he thinks is perfect

in the avatar of the glorious evolution, where viktor finally sees himself as powerful, as pure, as just like everybody else… he’s confident with jayce, even dominant, in a way he would never allow himself to be while he was alive in his original body.

and of course the kicker is that without his imperfections, without his entire self, he’s not viktor to jayce anymore. ‘my partner died in this room’

and it takes until the finale, until viktor can see himself through jayce’s eyes, for it to click that he could have been this way with jayce all along. that he has always been equal to jayce. that his confidence, his grace, his power - jayce saw it all along.

and i just found the end of the council room scene so devastating. the way that once viktor’s perfect evolved body is broken we immediately see him huddled and collapsed on the floor, making himself as small as possible

I can't believe they made Jayce have to crawl his way up to Piltover all on his own with a bad leg just like Viktor did and they made Viktor experience a life of loneliness without Jayce right there when he probably never thought Jayce would go first since he had his illness and was the one actively dying.

Really "take each other's woes" right there giving Jayce the understanding of why Viktor felt the way he felt about himself and Viktor understanding why Jayce broke his promise just to save his life.

don't get me wrong, I'm a tad bit sad that Jayvik didn't get a kiss, but can we appreciate that not only is touching foreheads a popular Zaunite signal,

and not only does Jayce know to do it,

but it's kind of a really pretty bit of symbolism that they're pressing their heads together? two partners, united by their ideas, their minds, their sparks. reduced to their consciousnesses. their minds are the closest together that they could be.

and while Jayce is gritting his teeth in that moment, struggling to hang on, Viktor is calm. his eyes and mouth are shut and relaxed. he wouldn't rather go out any other way than alongside Jayce. and Jayce only insists on staying because he would rather die with his partner than live without him.

jayce enduring a symbolic rendition of viktor's trauma is so painful and so, so clever.

being stricken down and immobilized through sheer accident or, in viktor's case, a cruelly random quirk that caused his disability.

then physically dragging himself from the lowest level of zaun to piltover, much like how viktor spent his youth reaching toward the promise piltover offered, but only if he could "pull himself up by the boot straps" and get there on his own. socioeconomic forces working against him be damned.

i appreciate arcane reminding us of viktor's origins - the reason he is so called to help people and, eventually, save himself - and putting jayce through the ringer - the contrast between he and viktor's lived experiences is front and center throughout season 1. the writers send jayce, and the audience, on a grueling journey to contemplate those experiences and how they've manifested in these intertwined characters.

fun fact: when Ekko's making the new Anomaly, he mentions that he's using Jayce's acceleration rune to power his invention, and he circles a rune on the whiteboard that looks exactly like the one on his armband:

and that's probably why the mage that saves young Jayce (which is Viktor iirc) is using it - he's turning winter to spring. accelerating time.

this is what happened right

Jayce and Mel falling apart because they both realized that they only wanted to be together to further their goals and that their goals and roles had changed. because when it came down to it, Jayce always focused on Viktor's disappearance, Viktor's presence, Viktor's work, Viktor's feelings. and Mel finally acknowledged that she had her own battles and her own ways to go, free from other people's expectations.

vs. Viktor telling Sky he'll miss her company and Sky saying "no, you won't," because Sky was only ever a warm person in a cold lab who probably tended to it more than Jayce was able to. just a figure to offer affection while Jayce was away. never a lab partner that Viktor had chemistry or care for, always a little distant, like their flashback scene.

and Jayce and Viktor meeting each other again at the end of it all, and Viktor asking why he bothers holding on for him, but Jayce always saw the beauty in him. he didn't need him to be perfect, to be better, to be brighter. he didnt care about a higher power or greater good. he just wanted him to live beside him.

I really wasn't happy with Arcane's ending for a while, but after letting it marinate, I think my frontal lobe just developed yall

no bc it's SO GOOD. every scene is INTENTIONAL. every side character is METHODICAL. jayce and viktor's storylines were done SO WELL. jinx and viktor both carrying that "why aren't you giving up on me" theme is PHENOMENAL. mel going from a support character for jayce's ambitions to a literal magical support is GENIUS. ekko using the anomaly to form his time travel device is IMMACULATE.

I'm actually in love with the end of this season I'm not gonna lie

anyone who watched that finale and tries to explain to me how jayce and viktor aren't gay need to donate their brain for me to dissect and study

this is the moment where Viktor realizes that it really is Jayce, doing what he's about to do, looking up at him like THAT.

he's looking up at him like that first day they met, utterly helpless, driven by his ambition, scared to lose it all. and Viktor does understand it. it's Jayce's love, his drive, his ambition, his selflessness, driving him to this point.

he's realizing that the two of them are always doomed to give their bodies and hearts and minds to progress, to change. they don't get to be them. they get to be the face of everything and everyone else. whether it's a cult, a nation, a council. they're both sides of the same coin, bound, tied to each other. this is their fate. and if Viktor needs to die at Jayce's hands, if it's really his Jayce that does it, then so be it.
