meljay is great but like....."you called us investments" vs. "you were very wise investments". there was affection, there was love, but a large part of why they met, why they grew closer, and why they remained so intertwined was because of their individual goals

mel saw jayce as a good investment. a good friend and a good partner, yes, but in the beginning and until the end, he was an investment and her Man of Progress.

their relationship ended because jayce and mel needed different things, and jayce himself expressed that he couldn't be her investment anymore. that she herself was powerful and prestigious enough to not need him. to find her own destiny, one that didn't involve manipulating his.

I love both dearly and I'm definitely not all like "give me jayvik or give me death" but they were intertwined due to business, and once their goals changed, they drifted apart.

Jayce and Mel falling apart because they both realized that they only wanted to be together to further their goals and that their goals and roles had changed. because when it came down to it, Jayce always focused on Viktor's disappearance, Viktor's presence, Viktor's work, Viktor's feelings. and Mel finally acknowledged that she had her own battles and her own ways to go, free from other people's expectations.

vs. Viktor telling Sky he'll miss her company and Sky saying "no, you won't," because Sky was only ever a warm person in a cold lab who probably tended to it more than Jayce was able to. just a figure to offer affection while Jayce was away. never a lab partner that Viktor had chemistry or care for, always a little distant, like their flashback scene.

and Jayce and Viktor meeting each other again at the end of it all, and Viktor asking why he bothers holding on for him, but Jayce always saw the beauty in him. he didn't need him to be perfect, to be better, to be brighter. he didnt care about a higher power or greater good. he just wanted him to live beside him.

my Sky Young hyperfixation has unfortunately led me down a deeper rabbit hole than I would have hoped. I have now begun to scour the LoL website for Zaun lore, redesign all four of the SkyMelJayVik quad, and rewrite an AU where all four of them are some level of romantically/queerplatonically involved

I now know what Zaun's Entresol level is and I really don't know what to do with this information besides just letting the fact that I've memorized League of Legends lore rot in my brain until I break down like an unoiled machine. I probably won't actually start a fic. or maybe I will. someone send help

I don't know if it's just me, but a lot of meljay and skyvik are veeery homophobic and biphobic towards jayvik shippers, at least on Twitter. Like, its okay to not like a ship, but saying things like that they CAN'T be gay or bi is so weird

I apologize for continuing 'the Vitya discourse', but unlike the previous anon (I'm happy for them, it's a nice name), I personally know way too many people named 'Vitya', the most prominent example of those being a guy who goes by 'the Bald Vitya' (he's bald). So you can imagine the visuals my brain draws every time I see these diminutives in fics lol.

Also, I’m new to the fandom, so I could be missing something in canon (maybe it’s the game Viktor thing?), but what makes people think he’s an east slavic coded? I know that Viktor has a Czech accent in Arcane.

LOL i have heard similar complaints from people who associate the nickname with the Most Middle Aged Guys Ever... the diversity of the human experience.

as a quick TLDR for the uninitiated: Viktor league of legends, from the moment of his release into the game 12ish years ago, was a red scare evil russian communism robot guy. His entire shtick is the general caricature of communism where you 'surrender your free will and become a cold unfeeling machine in the name of the greater system' because Thats How American Capitalists Think About Communism. His classic voicelines were also imbued with that classic movie villain russian accent, and its not for nothing that the one champion made to be his rival was Jayce, the literal stand-in for the american piltovan dream and brilliant golden progress by assimilating into capitalism and letting it consume you. I obviously have opinions on why riot's takes are dogshit and you can tell I dislike their centrism here.

then Harry Lloyd (arcane VA) gave him a different accent based on a Czech character he played and a lot of people started making their own hc's after that, but if you thought the commune/sudden evil heelturn in the show came out of nowhere its because the root of his character has always been the red scare Russian caricature and from there we build everything else. I tend to keep to his origins but make him less of a boogeyman.

PERSONALLY I prefer to apply a far more leftist lens on the whole ordeal league jayce/viktor have. You can literally see the roots of a way more interesting conversation if you try: luddites vs the hubris of industrialism and an automated future. Jayce is even wielding a giant hammer. its like the thing tells itself.
