just watched conclave and started examining its fan base and WOW yall. how in the world do people dismiss the ending as having “ruined the movie” when it proves the WHOLE POINT.

the ENTIRE MOVIE comments on church corruption and abuse of power. Lawrence (love him, but like,) utilizes his power as dean to ruin the reputation of his colleagues, even if it’s in good faith and defense of the church and his friends. Adeyemi, Tedesco, and Tremblay all exhibit sins and behaviors that bar them from papacy, whether they be simony, scandal, or fascist ideology.

and through all this, Benítez is INNOCENT. he meddles in nobody’s mess, he helps people fleeing crisis in war-torn countries, he votes for the cardinal whom he favors the ideals of most without considering bribery. and his only barring quality is his intersex identity, which became known to him after being raised as male AND becoming a priest. an identity that he accepted as natural, as god’s will, and prayed for guidance to accept. Benítez’s name selection and identity represent the fact that he cannot change how God made him. Lawrence said, “let Him grant us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and who carries on.”

if you really think that Benítez shouldn’t have been hope but that Tedesco or Adeyemi or even Lawrence should have…. you’re missing the point i fear
