“Finally, one day when I was twelve or thirteen, found this National Enquirer wit anatide about Billy Tipton.
(Editor's note: Bily Tipton was an American jazz musician. Although he lived his adult life as a man, it was discovered after his death in 1989 that he was assigned female at birth.]
I hid this National Enquirer in our house like it was a Playboy magazine, so I could come home and look at it. And I stopped praying to God every day, because at least I then had a role model in Billy Tipton.
Billy died in poverty before his time because he didn't want to seek medical intervention to blow his cover. And still, just learning about him gave me a grounding to know that I wasn't crazy. There are people out there like me, that I can relate to, and I can figure out hopefully how to move forward.”

You’re a grown man with the trauma of a little girl. ... I don’t mean that trans men cannot speak about the misogyny they experienced; it’s just now, most people will look at me and not see the layers of patriarchal violence I experienced. The song “Sweet Cis Teen” asks: Am I a boy or am I just my trauma? But all of my experiences did not magically disappear the moment(s) I realized I am a man, nor were they left behind. It was traumatic being a Chinese woman. I was spat at, harassed, fetishized, assaulted, told that my worth depended on others, my experience and abilities invalidated. My bodymind holds these memories and shapes itself with them, and I do not want to trivialize these memories because they continue to inform who I am and my politics.
this entire essay is worth a read, but the quotations I pulled out are the ones that strike me deeply, being the most relatable to my own FtM experience.

I don’t like it whenever I try to vent about the stuff I face as a closeted trans man from the Middle East, well-meaning westerners tell me that I should leave everything behind and come over to their side like it’s that easy
The environment we were brought up in conditioned us to be loyal to family/roots/tribe, it’s not easy to let that go
I basically built my whole life here, my job is here, I was educated here- it’s harder to take that with you abroad where they don’t even recognize your college, it’s not easy to let that go
Like okay I get to the west, now what? How am I gonna afford HRT and my ADHD meds? How am I gonna provide for housing? Taxes? Bills? If the college educated non immigrant citizens are already struggling for jobs with their state college degrees, what about me?
I’m supposed to take a couple of fast food gigs where I get yelled at by white people over chicken nugget? Only to not make enough to afford rent????
Idk I’m sorry I’d rather transition during retirement where at least I have a financial safety net, gender dysphoria might be a bitch but I don’t wanna end up homeless in a country where I don’t know anyone
I had a IRL transmasc person who I thought was a friend basically call me a coward for this, he probably looked at me like I was his escape plan- like we’re gonna get outta here Thelma and Louis style
This is real life not a fcking movie, we don’t control the narrative here
Plus I have young nieces and were involved in their lives, idk what effects me disappearing like that would have on their development and I’m not taking any chances
Plus I can’t leave my cat behind
The world doesn’t just revolve around me

In 2010, after waiting for other and younger people to form some sort of intersection of people of color and trans people, I formed the Trans People of Color Coalition. I just kept seeing the lack of intersectionality. As I traveled and did my trans work, I would hear from every pocket, whether it was rural or whether it was metropolitan: “I don't feel anybody's doing any work for me. I feel isolated.” And I heard that from every trans person of color. So we formed. The Time magazine cover gets us visibility [Editor's note: In May 2014, Time magazine ran a cover article under the headline "The Transgender Tipping Point: America's next civil rights frontier"], but we still have to change hearts and minds and get those rights. A magazine cover is not a piece of legislation. It's not a court case. We need social change, not just visibility. Black Americans have been visible forever. It takes more than that.

Trans women can be butch, and trans men can be femme, without compromising their womanhood or manhood. Just as masculine cis women and feminine cis men exist, so do gender non-conforming trans people. If being a butch woman doesn’t negate cis womanhood, it doesn’t negate trans womanhood—and the same goes for femme men. Gender nonconformity isn’t exclusive to cisgender people; trans people deserve that freedom too.

Hi, beans and sprouts! My best friend Sammy, a Latine nonbinary transfem, could really use some help. They've been dealing with a lot of stressful and scary stuff, so I'd be so grateful if y'all could throw some spare cash their way, even if it's just some change or only $1. Here's what they said:
"Hey y’all. I’ve had multiple medical situations arise in the last few weeks, and now I’m short on rent by quite a bit. If you can help me at all, I’d be willing to exchange any help with an appropriate tarot reading."
Contact Sammy for a tarot reading here!
