Some of you may have heard about Monarch butterflies being added to the Threatened species list in the US and be planning to immediately rush out in spring and buy all the milkweed you can manage to do your part and help the species.
And that's fantastic!! Starting a pollinator garden and/or encouraging people and businesses around you to do the same is an excellent way to help not just Monarchs but many other threatened and at-risk pollinator species!
However.
Please please PLEASE do not obtain Tropical Milkweed for this purpose!
Tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica)--also commonly known as bloodflower, Mexican butterflyweed, and scarlet milkweed--will likely be the first species of milkweed you find for sale at most nurseries. It'll be fairly cheap, too, and it grows and propagates so easily you'll just want to grab it! But do not do that!
Tropical milkweed can cause a host of issues that can ultimately harm the butterflies you're trying to help, such as--
Harboring a protozoan parasite called OE (which has been linked to lower migration success, reductions in body mass, lifespan, mating success, and flight ability) for long periods of time
Remaining alive for longer periods, encouraging breeding during migration time/overwintering time as well as keeping monarchs in an area until a hard freeze wherein which they die
Actually becoming toxic to monarch caterpillars when exposed to warmer temperatures associated with climate change
However--do not be discouraged!! There are over 100 species of milkweed native to the United States, and plenty of resources on which are native to your state specifically! From there, you can find the nurseries dedicated to selling native milkweeds, or buy/trade for/collect seeds to grow them yourself!!
The world of native milkweeds is vast and enchanting, and I'm sure you'll soon find a favorite species native to your area that suits your growing space! There's tons of amazing options--whether you choose the beautiful pink vanilla-smelling swamp milkweed, the sophisticated redring milkweed, the elusive purple milkweed, the alluring green antelopehorn milkweed, or the charming heartleaf milkweed, or even something I didn't list!
And there's tons of resources and lots of people willing to help you on your native milkweed journey! Like me! Feel free to shoot me an ask if you have any questions!
Just. PLEASE. Leave the tropical milkweed alone. Stay away.
TLDR: Start a pollinator garden to help the monarchs! Just don't plant tropical milkweed. There's hundreds of other milkweeds to grow instead!

Two things. The first is that huh, I guess you kinda coppice cinnamon, which makes a lot of sense now I think about it. The second is that we eat almonds and cassava, both of which are, in their wild state, hilariously toxic.
Both contain copious amounts of cyanide, or more accurately, compounds that release cyanide when you eat them. And yet? Cassava became a staple for people in the Amazon and beyond, because despite the fact that eating improperly prepared wild cassava will straight up kill you, people worked out that if you grind it up into a wet paste and leave it covered for several hours to offgas its cyanide. Though some domesticated varieties can be detoxified just through proper boiling and discarding of the water, a lot of domestic strains still require this whole involved process to not fatally poison you.
Meanwhile almonds, wild almonds, are also deadly poisonous. It takes about 50 to kill and adult but as few as 5 bitter almonds can be fatal to a child. Thing is, wild almonds occasionally produce plants that aren't stuffed to the gills with cyanide. But still, it feels insane to me that people who lived off the land in the places where wild almonds grew found out that some of these plants wouldn't kill you, because idk I feel like my instinct there would be to not even try And yet? Almonds are a thing. (almonds were a very early domesticated fruit tree and there's some features of almond propagation that make this even more insane)
If something is potentially edible, and I really do mean capital-P-Potentially here, someone, somewhere figured out how to eat it, even if figuring that out involved a truly ludicrous string of steps and/or luck to not just fucking die from it.

"An environmental toxicologist in California is cleaning up areas contaminated with heavy metals or other pollutants using fungi and native plants in a win-win for nature.
Where once toxic soils in industrial lots sat bare or weed-ridden, there are now flowering meadows of plants and mushrooms, frequented by birds and pollinators: and it’s thanks to Danielle Stevenson.
Founder of DIY Fungi, the 37-year-old ecologist from UC Riverside recently spoke with Yale Press about her ongoing work restoring ‘brownfields,’ a term that describes a contaminated environment, abandoned by industrial, extraction, or transportation operations.
A brownfield could be an old railway yard or the grounds of an abandoned oil refinery, but the uniting factor is the presence of a toxic containment, whether that’s a petrochemical, heavy metal, or something else.
Noting that she had read studies about mushrooms growing around the Chernobyl nuclear plant, she came to understand further, through her work, that fungi are an extraordinarily resilient species of life that consume carbon, and even though petroleum products are toxic to plants, to mushrooms they are essentially a kind of carbon.
In fact, mushrooms break down several categories of toxic waste with the same enzymes they use to consume a dead tree. They can also eat plastic and other things made out of oil, like agrochemicals.
At the Los Angeles railyard, as part of a pilot project, Stevenson and colleagues planted a variety of native grass and flower species alongside dead wood that would incubate specific fungi species called arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, which assists plants in extracting heavy metals like lead and arsenic from the soil.
Alongside traditional decomposer fungi, the mixture of life forms demonstrated tremendous results in this brownfield.
“In three months we saw a more than 50 percent reduction in all pollutants. By 12 months, they were pretty much not detectable,” Stevenson told Yale 360.
Decontaminating soil like this typically involves bringing in a bulldozer and digging it all up for transportation to a landfill. This method is not only hugely expensive, but also dangerous, as contaminated material can scatter on the winds and fall out of the backs of trucks carting it away.
By contrast, the plants that draw out the toxic metals can be harvested and incinerated down to a small pile of ash before cheap transportation to a hazardous waste facility.
The technique, which Stevenson says has some scaling issues and issues with approval from regulators, is known officially as bioremediation, and she’s even used it to safely break down bags of lubricant-soaked rags from bicycle repair shops.
“People who live in a place impacted by pollution need to have a say in how their neighborhood is being cleaned up. We need to empower them with the tools to do this,” she said."

helping “The Environment” as an individual is such a nebulous and ever changing concept and seems to be very much in the Discourse™️ at the moment so I just want to take a minute to shout into the void with some reminders I gave my enviro students when they got to the “oh dear god we’re all gonna die” phase of the class:
“Individual choices don’t matter” is like. true(?) for climate change (unless you’re a kardashian or CEO or something) but that just means you can’t reusable tote bag your way out of a private jet society. NOT that you can’t have any impact through community initiatives and activism. Advocate for municipal composting and public transit!! Get involved locally!!!!! Write weekly to your representatives! Do whatever you can to get unstuck and scrape together some modicum of hope.
Also on individual choices. There are some that “matter” but be very wary of outsized benefits promised for seemingly small choices (e.g. the straw debacle). An app is not the thing to save us from a hundred years of industry. Going out and collecting litter DOES have an impact even if that impact is just “this area of the world no longer has trash in it.” It’s not solving the issue of microplastics or whatever but it is helping local birds. And it’s helping YOU feel more connected to your local environment and getting you involved with the world and your community.
Finally, the best thing you can be is well informed, persistent, and kind. Be willing and able to help if you bump into someone who is open to the idea of not letting Shell and SHEIN pour toxic sludge directly into every river. It’s more people than you think. But most people only know how to buy things that are “better.” (Electric cars, reusable bags, expensive neutral clothing made of flax). They want to do SOMETHING but we’re all just kind of vibrating balls of anxiety all the time. Know what sort of things are going on around you and invite them! My go to’s are composting initiatives, textile recycling programs, and pollinator friendly/grass free gardens.
Again, it would be great if we were all willing to drag the Shell and Nestle CEOs out to account for their crimes but being paralyzed by fear is not gonna help. Neither is another ethical clothing brand selling $400 linen underwear (probably). I’ve found time and time again that people who have any amount of tangible connection to the world outside have a much more visceral reaction to billionaire super yachts than defeatist suburbanites who drive EVs and have a kitchen full of dubious organic snacks.

The problem is it's extremely hard to make a highly specific pesticide. It's not impossible in some situations, but certainly not always possible to have something that kills X but not Y. Generally speaking, there's usually no way to make a chemical pesticide that say, kills caterpillars and/or aphids but not bees.
Fundamentally, the vast majority of compounds that are toxic to pest insects will be toxic to pollinators too, because they're just too metabolically similar. Hell, often enough the same species may be a pollinator as an adult and a pest as a larva (looking at you, Lepidoptera). Frankly, most insects are similar enough to humans at a chemical level that it's tricky to find effective pesticides that aren't extremely toxic to us as well. (this is why herbicides are generally much safer than insecticides: it's way easier to find metabolic pathways in plants to target that we do not share with them).
About the only way to target specific taxa is through biological means, rather than straight chemical. If you choose two random bugs in your garden, there's a fair chance there literally isn't a single readily synthesisable compound in existence that's effectively toxic to one but not the other. However, living organisms are often far more specific in what they'll target. Even then, most effective ones are going to be relatively broad in their approach and...there's always the risk of them jumping host if you keep throwing them around new environments.
That's why Bacillus thuringiensis strains are such a popular tool, as they cast a narrower net - different strains may only be able to produce proteins that bind to the gut lining of a few species groups for instance. There are also various places that sell parasitoids and micropredators that only use specific species for targeted control.
But as headspace-hotel has mentioned, the easiest way to do this at home is to provide habitats for naturally occurring predators and parasitoids of pest species.
Hot 4am take but I feel like if we want to get people more interested in making their yards a more habitable space for wildlife like insects, we have to acknowledge that ‘Don’t want bugs in your house’ is still a 100% fair and valid point of view. ‘Loves nature’ and ‘doesn’t want roaches spiders and mosquitoes in the house’ aren’t opposites.
And with that in mind, when we propose to people that spraying pesticides around houses is Not A Good Idea, Actually, I feel like we need to give an alternative asides from ‘deal with it.’

The greenhouse was beautiful, all kinds of flowers adding color, the lush green bushes making it look peaceful. Butterflies that flutter around, the bees that pollinate, the birds that chirp – so peaceful. The warm ray of the sun keeps your skin warm. The weather was perfect.
“You know… I just couldn’t see Dion with anyone. That boy shows no interest in anything – but I’m curious to see how this plays out. Although if you ask me, I think he should be grateful to get such a beautiful wife such as yourself!” Maria claps her hands as she praises you.
Yes. The weather was perfect. But being cornered and held hostage by Maria Agriche under the pretense of teatime was not. The blasted woman found you not even an hour after your bath – truly a morning person. The worst part was that it’s been two hours since she dragged you into her little game.
“Don’t you agree, Sierra?” The woman in question looks at Lant’s third wife timidly. Her deep blue eyes filled with both pity directed at you, and fear for her well-being glances at you. Her honey blond hair practically floats with the wind. She looks back at Maria.
“Yes, of course.” Then she looks back at you.
“Please don’t hesitate to ask us for help.” Hah. Funny, especially when her eyes are silently begging for it. But you’re in the same spot as she is – unable to escape. You’re just happy you don’t have a child. Yet.
You repress the cold shiver that attempts to crawl up your spine.
“Oh, thank you…” how should you address them as? Sierra wasn’t technically your mother-in-law… but Maria was. Sierra catches on before Maria does.
“Oh, you can call me Sierra. After all, it’s Maria that’s your mother-in-law, if we consider that Dion, is her biological son.” A forced smile tugs at her lips. The short haired brunette stares at her favorite person in awe.
“Oh my, Sierra!” she coos before turning her attention towards you. Unfortunately, her smile was genuine. Like she didn’t force both of you victims to have tea with her. You take a sip from your cup, hiding your frown. And then, you smile.
“Thank you, Sierra and mother-in-law.”
“Oh, don’t mention it. Anything for my precious, beautiful daughter-in-law!” she chirps. Her purple eyes shine brightly as she offers you more tea. You accept, watching as she personally pours it. Part of you do hope that’s it’s poisoned – maybe just enough to keep you bedridden with a stomachache for a day or two.
Which would mean that most likely, no one would be allowed near you. Well, maybe.
“Do tell me if Dion bothers you at all. He means well, but… he can be too much, at times. Oh! If you ever get lonely, feel free to find me – these kids get so busy.” She props her elbows on the table, resting her hands on the back of her hands. Like a curious child she observes you, gauging your reaction.
Your legs are begging you to run. You resist the urge to flip the table over and run for the hills; she would just kill you once she catches you.
Or turn you into a toy.
“Thank you again, mother-in-law. But I’m sure that we’ll get along fine.” You’re smiling on the outside but you’re screaming and crying mentally. You’re caught by surprise when her white gloved hands carefully reach across the small table to grab yours gently.
“You’re sweet… truly, I’m happy that Lant picked you to be our son’s wife.” Her beauty is breathtaking, pale skin and soft hair, her hat casting a shadow over her face. But it does little to hide that hint of sadistic pleasure in her eyes. You already knew she was a sadist and mental.
But you failed to realize that she would add you to her list of favorite targets until now. Mulling over it, you think that this could be helpful – maybe like with Sierra, she would guard you like a dog. However, that would also mean she would drag you around like a doll. And if she ever got bored of you…
“Oh, are you cold?” She feels how your hands tremble. Right. You shouldn’t think of such things right now. Not in front of her.
“Ah, sorry mother-in-law… I was just excited to meet you so quickly after the wedding. We didn’t get to talk much during the engagement party nor at the wedding ceremony.” You lie, and part of you knows that she’ll only take it as half-truth. Still, her smile twists into something warm yet sinister.
You’re her new prey.
“I’m happy about that too. But my, those events must have left you tired.” She ‘comforts’ you, squeezing your hands before releasing them. They tingle coldly.
“Yes… I never thought that they could be so busy and complicated.” From out of the corner of your eye you notice Sierra busying herself with a slice of cake. She mentally checked out. Oh, how you wish you could do the same.
“Mm, but it was exciting, wasn’t it?”
Exciting? How would she know? She didn’t even want to marry Lant in the first place – she only stayed for Sierra. If you’re remembering correctly from spoilers anyway. Fuck, you wished you finished the entire series.
“It was… different from how I imagined. From the novels I read and what I was told by some relatives, I thought it would have been a breeze. But it was exciting.” Just in a horrible way you mentally add. This woman probably knows your true thoughts so why state them.
Still, you should play the role of a ‘loving’ daughter-in-law.
“Dion,” she starts while pressing her lips against the rim of her teacup, “helped a bit with the preparations. Not much, just with the little things… specific things.”
“What?”
With the way she smiles, it’s clear that she’s enjoying how baffled you are. But forget that – Dion? Help? With wedding preparations?
All she does is grin before changing the subject.
Sierra exchanges a look with you but leaves it be.

Your legs give out the moment the bedroom door shuts behind you. Hana went to get you something once she escorted you back to your room. You forgot what though.
“Ah… I thought it’d never end…” you slump against the door, worn and torn. How long was that hostage situation? Three hours? Four?
You need to work on a plan to avoid Maria. Otherwise, her gossip and sadistic tendencies will be the death of you. You’ll die before Dion can even hold a sword against your throat.
“Husband, husband… mother-in-law, husband… which one is worse…” your thumb becomes victim to biting. “The mother-in-law…? She is the reason, well, one of them… I feel bad but I probably shouldn’t…” you mumble to yourself.
“But my husband is also…shit, I’m so fucked….” Is this how Roxana felt? Hopeless and weak? Unlike you, however, she was able to adapt quickly. And unlike her, you weren’t one to stay strong under pressure. Not to that degree. You’re not sure if you ever will be.
Thud, thud
Banging the back of your head against the door seems like a sane choice. Maybe you’ll wake up from this nightmare. Yeah, that’s it! This is just a nightmare. If you hit your head enough, you’ll wake up from it. You’ll wake up in your nice, fluffy bed. It’ll be your eighteen birthday and instead of being told about a fiancé you’ll be told that… you don’t know.
Think (Name), think. There must be something you could conjure up in your mind that could overwrite this nightmare. Something. Anything!
Creak
You fall backwards as the door opens, head landing against something warm and firm. You look up only to see crimson eyes that’s emptier than a void.
“Oh,” you blink up at your husband, “we-welcome���back?” You question rather than greet. He’s like a statue, only looking down at you. He doesn’t move, simply gazes at you. You can’t tell what he’s thinking. You’re not sure if you want to.
“Wife.”
At Dion’s words you suddenly remember where you were – his room.
You scramble to your feet, tripping once before dusting yourself off to make yourself presentable. Doing a curtsy, you greet him properly. Your head hangs for longer than necessary; you don’t want to see his face nor for him to see the look of fear in your eyes. Cold sweat forms on your temples and you hope he doesn’t notice.
Honestly, you’re surprised to see him. You thought he would avoid you, seeing it as unnecessary to interact with you.
Or maybe he didn’t expect to run into you here. Either way, as you look up at him, you can’t help but wish you would drop dead. To be woken up by your brother shaking you, like the little shit he is. To smell the coffee your mother would make for the dead tired servants.
“I heard you had tea with mother.” He walks past you, causing you to quickly face him. No brush of the shoulders. No questioning why you were sitting on the ground like a dog. Not even a glance is thrown your way.
“Y-yes,” you shouldn’t stutter. Probably. “It was…” nice? Horrible? Exciting or boring? “…a unique experience.” You answer, fiddling with your hair. That should be a neutral response. You decide to keep quiet about what Maria had told you – that he helped with some of the preparations.
Most likely, she lied about it to see your reaction.
Dion doesn’t say anything else. Just goes the closet and slip off his shirt to change into a new one. Your cheeks feel warm as you look away, bashful. Now was not the time to admire his muscles. Rather, now was the time to excuse yourself and come back once the coast was clear.
Now that you think about it… where would you even go? There were too many twists and turns, with insane, awful and bestial people. What if you ran into one of his many siblings? Or another wife that decided you were a weak little thing they could get their hands on?
Or worse yet, run into Lant? The realization of how alone and weak you are, has your fingers pulling at your hair. Are you safer here after all? With Dion Agriche? The most brutal of all siblings?
Well, you are his wife… but that doesn't mean he won’t dispose of you. More so if he really did take after his father as others said. He did in the series, you think, but everything was turned on it’s fucking head. You don’t know what to expect anymore.
“Mother enjoys playing with the weak,” Dion informs you as he walks past you, glancing at you over his shoulder. You can’t breathe. “So, I suggest you don’t show weakness.” He leaves you like that. You watch as he closes the door behind him, silent. It was all you could do.

“My lady, I have brough you the indigestion medicine, as Lady Sierra had requested.” Her statement puzzles you before you feel some warmth spread throughout your chest. She’s sweet. Too sweet.
You feel horrible for her but even worse for her children.
You push the thought away.
You force yourself onto your feet.
“Come in.” you order, praying that Hana didn’t hear the crack in your voice. One breath, two breaths, your lungs work overtime to ensure you keep breathing. It hurts, like you’re being stabbed from the inside. You need to work through the pain.
Fuck, you need to work through the pain if you want a fighting chance to survive here. Maybe make it out if you’re lucky.
Hana comes into the room, holding a tray of water and a small white pouch of medicine. Doubt starts to swirl inside you. How could you be sure that Sierra was the one who sent this? What if it was Maria playing a ‘prank,’ to see your crying face?
Man, why did you zone out during the last ten minutes of that damn get-together.
She walks closer until she’s barely a foot away. You take the medicine with wariness, unable to reject it in front of the maid. Her eyes are glued to you. Expecting you to accept this so-called ‘medicine’ without hesitance. And so, you do.
You can feel the pills go down your throat, the water barely helping. When you place the near empty glass down onto the tray, Hana bows before taking her leave with your permission. Again, the door shuts. Only for her to come back immediately afterwards.
Great, just great.
“My lady, I forgot to tell you… I’ll be helping you get ready around six.”
“Oh? For what?”
“Dinner with Master Dion. I’ll come back here and there; forgive me for not staying near your side for the entire day. As for now, I am not your personal maid yet.” So, Hana is going to be your personal maid. But why isn’t she right now?
How strange.
Wait. Maybe this is a good thing – you’ll be alone for quite a bit. Away from preying eyes. Maybe you could conjure up a plan on how to survive this hellhole.
“It’s fine, Hana,” a sweet smile as you clasp your hands together, ‘understanding’ of her position. “I’m grateful and happy that you will be checking on me regardless of.” Hopefully you seem sweet enough. Genuine despite everything being faked.
She looks at you oddly. In the end she just bows her head before leaving.
“…I think I’m going to die from stress before anyone gets to me…” dragging your feet, you sluggishly fall face first onto the made bed. Your feet are begging to be released from the torture device that is your heels; so, you kick them off. Huffing, you proceed to climb further onto the bed till your feet also rest on the mattress.
It’s soft and smells nice.
It smells like your bed back at home, oddly enough.
‘Dion…helped a bit with the preparations. Not much, just with the little things… specific things.”
“…What did that witch mean by that…?” Maria’s words come to mind the longer the scent engraved itself into your nose and mind. “She must be joking,” you muse, letting your eyes flutter shut.
But… things are starting to get a bit creepy.
Your eyes open. The longer you think about it, the gears turn in your head.
First, the shampoo. Sure, it was a popular brand, but you doubt your husband wanted to go around smelling like lavender. His… victims would smell him instantly if he used the product. The smell was more subtle than strong, but it would be best not to take any chances. Now, the bed.
It smelt like fucking citrus. Bergamot oranges to be exact, the same smell your bed has.
 You shake your head. It was just a coincidence – cirtcus smells were known to keep the bedbugs away. And as for the shampoo… maybe Maria sent it. As a wedding gift, probably. That or she didn’t want you to smell like him.
Either or neither, it shouldn’t matter. You’re just overthinking this. The insanity that takes over this mansion is just stressing you out. It would only make sense that you overthink about common scents.
“…I wonder if I’ll be allowed to write to my family…”
With that, your eyes flutter close. Everything turns back and sound is no longer a thing.

kanthony thoughts: wrestling with love and death

The bee is such a perfect symbol for the love story of S2 - it symbolizes the duality of life. It is a symbol of fertility: bees are associated with spring, the act of pollination, and sex (e.g. "the birds and the bees"). But here it is also a symbol of death and trauma. It is what killed Papa Bridgerton, took Violet's true love, stole a father from the kids, and what (in this patriarchy) forced an 18 year old boy to become the "father" of the family, trapping him emotionally in time at that period of loss which Anthony never processed.
Through this duality, the bee embodies the themes and core struggle Kate and Anthony are confronted with. It is both Eros, sexual love and reproduction, and Thanatos, a representation of death. Both are interwoven throughout our lives. And we all end up in death's country eventually, some sooner than others. People like Kate and Anthony, who've met the heartbreak of the world very young, often see death and loss everywhere - because it is everywhere, but so too is life.
There is another fertility symbol that is also a death symbol: the pregnant Violet in flashbacks. The great love she and Edmund shared has brought beautiful children into the world - but the act of creating life can kill a mother. Violet herself has suicidal thoughts about wishing the act of giving life had killed her. It is an inescapable part, even with the best modern medicine, of procreation for someone who gives birth. Bringing life is also risking death.
This is the truth that Anthony and Kate both know and fear and have shaped themselves around. They fear living because they've both suffered losses young and known, from a young age, that death is always there. Uncertainty and loss are woven throughout all joy and love. Their solution to this problem has been simple: they will choose to not participate in living.
They both make statements to this effect. Anthony to Violet, saying he will be not happy but "content" without love.

And Kate shares her similar plans for a miserable "contentment" without love:

Anthony will make himself the image not even of his vibrant and loving father, but of something worse: an old man before his time. No joy, no pleasure, no love. Just duty and a rigid focus exclusively on the mind over the heart. Violet tells him - your father allowed himself to love. The truth is Anthony cannot be like him like this.

Kate has a similar scene - she has made herself exiled from life by choosing to be a spinster. As she explains, she wants to be like Lady Danbury, but in the same way Anthony cannot be like Edmund without letting himself live, Lady Danbury tells her: you will *never* be like me if you go on like this. I had a life! I lived and now I enjoy my social games very much because I am satisfied that I have lived.

These two young people, they're not even thirty yet, and both of them have buried themselves alive. They've done it in a futile effort to escape the pain, the loss, that comes along with the joy of living. We open ourselves to it when we open our hearts. And keeping our hearts shut is not an escape from death, it's giving our lives up to it before we've even had our measure of joy.

In case we missed the point, Kate and Anthony's little sisters come in to drive it home: you think we respect you for the things you do, emptying your life of anything but duty, Daphne tells Anthony, knowing that he longs to be the respected and great figure their father was. We don't. We pity you. OUCH. Harsh but so so necessary - when someone has created a toxic and false narrative in their mind and they're giving all their energy to it, sacrificing everything to this... broken coping mechanism, sometimes a jolt is required. Daphne is letting him know that the thing he consoles himself with, the idea he is respected by his family for his dutiful sacrifice, is a lie.
He cannot be the man he wants to be if he won't let himself live, like Edmund did. Edmund spent every moment of the short time he got on earth living and loving deeply. And when he died, it broke so many hearts. But, as Violet tells Anthony later: I'd do it all over again, I'd suffer the pain again, just to have the time we got together. The love Edmund and I shared was worth all the pain.

And Edwina, for her part, is brave enough to see the truth. She finally realizes that Kate has inadvertently been living vicariously through her - trying to give her little sister her own dreams, not realizing the problem with that. Edwina is a grown woman and she still doesn't actually know what she truly wants her life to be. Again, this is such an OUCH moment. Kate never would have intentionally done such a thing to her beloved little sister. But she needs to hear that she has!
The kind of repression Kate and Anthony engaged in - it comes from a place that makes sense, they even mean it lovingly, but it doesn't work. As Daphne said earlier: these kind of feelings will find a way out. Kate accidentally imposed her own dreams on her sister and thwarted Edwina's growth and choices.
Both younger sibs are courageous enough to demand more, for themselves, and for the elder siblings they love - even though they can be overbearing. Even though, in this moment, both of them need their younger sibs to give them some "tough love" to shock them out of the nonsense they've fallen into and dragged their families along with them.
The parallels are so gorgeous. And the power of these two fearful people, who have buried themselves alive, choosing risk and joy and love finally? Embracing life and all its pain for the joy it brings? Soaringly romantic and such a beautiful affirmation of life.

Obanai got into a fight with a siren guard when he was going to visit Giyu, they had a good relationship in the past, and it caused blindness in this AU and the bad connection between the two, Giyu still doesn’t know what happened.
A single feather from Mitsuri or anyone from her kingdom with either connect you to your soulmate (left) or give you the confidence to leave a toxic relationship (right).
Mitsuri accidentally gave Shinobu one of her left feathers and the butterfly has been in love with the dove since.
Shinobu and her kingdom help out with harvests and pollination, but Shinobu often helps doctors with medical drugs.
Giyuu is Vaporeon colors, he started to play Pokémon and vaporeon is his favorite as they share color schemes.
I genuinely couldn’t figure out how to draw the dove wings so I did trace them for the base but the outline is a tad different from the base.

Lepidopterans, the insect clade including butterflies and moths, were among the invertebrate species seeded onto the planet's biome, in order to act as pollinators that allowed the numerous introduced plants to survive. While most of them adhered to this lifestyle and ecological niche, as ravenous leaf-eaters that metamorphosed into flying pollinators, a few began to experiment with more unconventional lifestyles.
Some of the stranger kinds included the caterpedes: a group of neotenic species that matured simply as larger larvae and skip metamorphosis altogether: filling niches as forest floor detritivores, folivores or occasionally even predators of other insects. And perhaps more unusual are the clade known as the Hemimetamorpha, or "half-changed", which do pupate and emerge as adults with proboscises: yet retain their silk glands ejecting silk through a spinneret located directly below the proboscis and between the labial palps, allowing them to construct nests or wrap their eggs in silk sacs for protection.
Many of the Hemimetamorpha do not develop wings, and instead, thanks to their piercing and sucking mouthparts, fill the niches of true bugs on Earth: as sap-suckers akin to aphids, leafhoppers or cicadas, predators of small arthropods, or even as as flea-like parasites on larger animals. And in the case of one clade, the spooders, they use their retained silk glands to spin webs to catch their prey, in a manner akin to their arachnid namesake.
The red-spotted skeeter (Arachnopapilo rubrum) is one widespread Middle Temperocene species, ranging well across the tropics and temperate zones of Gestaltia and Arcuterra. Despite appearances, it sports two ocelli, one next to each compound eye, large feathery antennae possessing olfactory receptors, and a proboscis, albeit a short, sharp one rather than the long, coiled ones of nectar-feeders, all of which mark its lepidopteran ancestry despite the otherwise lack of resemblance to them.
Female red-spotted skeeters spin webs among grasses and branches, waiting to ensnare flying insects that they then immobilize with digestive enzymes in their saliva, while males are smaller and nomadic, instead hunting by pouncing on their prey and traveling across larger areas of territory compared to the more sedentary females who prefer to stay in their webs. They are also more brightly colored, in order to entice a mate, as the larger female is not above preying upon a suitor she does not like, though occasionally, a male may resort to restraining a female with his own silk, immobilizing her long enough to successfully mate and fleeing before she escapes.
Once mated, the female wraps her eggs into a silk pouch, searches out a safe place with plenty of food, and leaves the egg sac there to develop with no further intervention. The young hatch out as fairly typical caterpillars, yet are carnivores like the adults, tracking down and ambushing other small insects, in particular ants due to their foraging trails being a reliable source of food that comes to them as they lie in wait, as well as their toxic compounds being sequestered by the larva for its own defense. With a nutritious protein-rich diet, the larva matures faster than a leaf-eating caterpillar, and is ready to pupate within a week or two, producing a camouflaged chrysalis that is attached to branches and stems and further disguised by bands of silk. After another 5-7 days it emerges as an adult, and is immediately ready to hunt for a meal within minutes, being wingless and thus bypassing the long vulnerable phase of waiting of their wings to unfold. Within the span of a month, another generation is fully-fledged and ready to breed: a rapid turnover vital for a species with high mortality rates and many enemies-- including members of its own species in both their larval and adult forms.

The polar region
!This is quite big world building post of pure hyper fixation and murdered English be warned!
General geography
The polar region is located on the south of the globe, on one of the only two continents. Due to the axis of the planet it is covered in almost eternal night, which consequently causes there to be extremely cold and dark. However, the life conditions are surprisingly welcoming(not great or anything but enough to live) thanks to the high seismicity and volcanic activity of the area, which provides both of light and warmth essential for sustaining life. The region is the land of contrasts -snow, freezing cold water and boiling hot lava basically stands side by side. The continent, caressingly called Scylla or Jörmung, is made of two elements separated by inner sea. First part is the barrier reef made of basalts and volcanic glass. In walls of the barrier are located still active volcanoes keeping the area warm and snow free. It is believed that underneath the first few layers of the ring there is still living and breathing lava waiting to break free from the tough and stiff shell. The reef has only one passage through often referred as the throat. That's the only safe way to the inner part of the continent, unless you can sail well enough. The importance of this sea route is hard to even express, but it's enough to create in its name a special holiday known as "Iconmas". During the celebration locals hammer nails into the walls of the throat and hang the leather portraits of lost in the sea and their fautors as a memorial and sacrifice. The second element is the continent itself. It's covered almost entirety with glacier, only occasionally by the sea side you may experience the black rocky or sandy beaches. In the middle of the land there are few small mountain ranges made of sleeping volcanoes. These giants are the key elements of survival in these land as they are riverheads of the continent. It's activity both melts the ice creating warm rivers with fresh water and creates lava rivers which prevent from renewed freezing and provide light. This combination allows life to sprout in the harsh conditions of southern pole giving the beginning to small forests near rivers. The sea(it's technically a lagoon) separates both landmasses. It's might not be the deepest, the saltiest or the most tempestuous sea of the planet but still quite challenging to navigate on. The waters of the lagoon are quite warm around 10°C(for the place with no sunlight it's warm) and freezes only during coldest months of winter. The sea bottom is full of hydrothermal vents, rocky spikes of volcanic origin, icebergs and reefs which brings great danger to unprepared sailors.
Flora
The flora of the polar region is not very diverse but is made of exclusively endemic species. Climate, access to light and running water is highly limited which forced plants to lose many typical characteristics and develop brand new modifications. Everything to survive and thrive in it's own unique way. Common traits of local plants are small size, yellowish needles(etioplasts), and overall similar to the gymnospermea's wood and liber structure

Most of the them are delicate herbs with long vernalization period, perennial plants and cryptogamic plants with wood like structures. Their needles and petals are usually covered in fuzz/pubescence and are quite searing in touch. These plants rearly blooms. The tiny weather window allowing plants to be pollinated and form fruits lasts only few weeks when sunlight reaches peaks of mountains. The fruits of these plants are usually eatable for witches, demons and titans and are rear source of vitamins and anthocyanins

In the polar region there are only three types of trees. All grow in close distance from the rivers and eachother creating thick rotting system. Development of tough bark covered in wax and thermal pith allows them to survive the winter season while protecting from toxic fumes released by lava. These plants are not reliant on skylight or temperature and their blooming and fruition periods are regulated by phytohormones. The fruits resemble fruits of yew-tree. These plants are main source of plant base materials used by locals
Architecture
The architecture of the continent is highly influenced by the climate. The buildings are made to protect owners from cold, wind and snow. The structures are minimalistic, simple, often tall with strong fundaments, thick walls similar to fortresses and with little to none ornaments. Locals prefer the practicality and safety over the esthetic values when it comes to their homes and public buildings, especially since delicate decorations could quickly be destroyed by weather. Due to the constant darkness good lighting inside and outside the homes is crucial part of every structure. There is nothing more valuable in the land of the night than a tiny star guiding you through snow and halls

Titan's architecture is pure definition of the polar architecture style. Fortress , medieval like castles strong enough to withstand blizzards and storms. Tall and simple building towering over any other constructions nearby. They are located on remote island, hillsides of volcanoes or the barrier. The top storeys often has small stained windows as an only decorative element of the construction. The main entrance in comparison to usual open arch commonly found in architecture of other titans are replaced by heavy wooden gateway. Polar titans have very sensitive eyesight, adapted to the night vision, which results in very specific type of lighting inside their homes. All chandeliers, lamps and fireplaces emits reddish light, which is less irritating for their eyes. The effect is attained thanks to usage of special type of glass mixed with gold compounds and ambers imported from other isles. The most striking characteristic of the titan architecture is the main material they use. White fortress generated from their magic resembles in the composition titan bones. It's hard to not notice them from the afar. The contrast between black basalts, dark waters of ocean, slowly spilling lava and opal tower is impossible to miss. Unlikely demons and witches who need to collect materials, prepare and construct their homes. Process of building the titan's towers takes little to no time and effort, while achieving results beyond capabilities of any other species. After all it's hard to complete with a magic that could sprout out any life the titan could imagine

The witches architecture is much less impressive than titan's architecture. While titans style are monumental, making their buildings leaving passerbyes in awe, witches building are brutalist simple and raw. Made of the dark wood, stones, ceiling covered with the thick layer of moss and tiny windows facing alleys and paths. Heavy snow fall forces the construction to be placed higher in order to be capable of getting in or out. It resulted in creating "huts on hen's legs". These houses are very tight. Usually there are only 4 rooms connected with a big fireplace that heat, light and was used to cook food. Beds are usually built in special wardrobes that preserved warmth better. In harsh conditions where they happened to live individual villages without titans protection didn't exist or lasted longer than few years. The only choice are large towns usually located near ocean or river mouths. In order to fit the population on that limited area all architecture was forced to go up instead around. The huts of the cities were built in the way that creates layers of very tight located buildings connected with hanging wooden pavements and ladders. The status of a witch often is expressed by their house location and size: wealthier the witch taller their house is and nearer the main alleys it's built. The worst location to live were flood zones and areas near the forest wall

Polar titans are in many ways extremely similar to polar bears. Their fur works almost identical, has similar structure, colour, qualities, only skin instead of black is blue. Their eyes are adapted to the minimal amount of light it can catch, a few cones, plenty of rods. They're simply colourblind but with excellent night vision. Polars possess some marine animals features which are carry-over from the times when they were still nomads and usually travel by seas. Similar to our bears situation polar titans are statistical the biggest of all races. To be safe, warm, active and happy. Also the height difference between titans, witches and demons are the biggest in polar region as all three groups fit in very similar niche and extremely limited resources. Witches got a lot smaller and develop brown fat to keep existing, while titans become significantly bigger and fluffier

The society of the continent is quite hierarchical. Not only it's separated on the gods(titans) and their votary(witches and demons) but also statues (titan > demon > witches) witch can be traced back to magic predisposition. Similarly to all isles during that era. The species social structures have also their own hierarchy, professions and titles.
Titans all are on top-level in society, as gods creators of life and lords of sea there wasn't even discussion why. Usually they wear coats made of yellow needles of trees, "skirt" made of fine selkidomus's leather and as the typical element of titan's fashion embroidered ribbons engrained with red ink. Inside this group are separated smaller ones including:
Sherpas - tiny group of titans living on hillsides of the barrier reefs away from cities. They are guides of caravans when the throat is clogged or frozen and watchers of the sea. It is believed that they prevents great floods from hitting the capital and other towns. Sherpas also keep the flame of the lighthouse
Njörðr - traders who operates on the continental sea and around the continent(difference between quennian and them are the area they travel). Out of all groups the distance between them and votary is the smallest
Joms - skilled warriors who follows similar moral code as vikings used to. They believe that the highest honour is to die in the battle, which leads to their quite big percentage in mercenaries. In eyes of the local witches they would be treated like heros of epos and myths who fought monsters and new gods(unless they are not the one who invades)
Jarls- the true highest gods of the continent. They are the core of the city, the first and grand patrons of the towns. Their supervision allowed votary to gather and built everything from homes to harbours. All other groups of titans also falls under their protection and rule. Whole social, cultural, religious and political life is more or less tied with the jarl of the land. Often their birthday or death dates are celebrated like religious holidays
Grylian - members of the "knight" order, not much is known about them except they live in the most isolated island in the continent, chop their horns down and tie their muzzles. Sometimes witches reports seeing unknown boats, nothing like any local ones, stalking them while fishing. Local authorities usually does nothing with it. They know whose these boats are. If they are harmless and don't want any greater contact why to bother.The rumours spread around titans points that they might be form of a cult who believes in the old myth of witches predicting the end of the world
The witches of the continent have the the lowest status in the social hierarchy. Being generally quite delicate and often defensless with their tiny bilesacks in the world were strength and magic is to be or not to be is difficult. In exchange for the protection they offered their labour and fruits it. Witches of polar region are chubby-cheeked, fuzzy eraed and have greater night vision than others witches for different regions. They usually wear warm ushanka, long selkieskin vest , and few inner layers of robes. They always carry with themselves lanterns to safely navigate through woods, seas and city.
Seamster - a sewers are highly valued craftsmen. It's not uncommon to see these artisans being treated with the greatest honours, even better than many officials. Their bright colourful aprons are symbols of their profession and years of mastering the craft. Old diaries, from the times when gods wander around the world, says that witches supposedly gained the favours of titans by giving them sewer's masterworks. That could explain why out of all professions seamsters are adored so much
Courtier - small group of witches who live and serve titans in their homes. Scope of duties is quite wide but offers great benefits and better future for kids. You can always tell if the witch is a courtier or not by their hair - all of them have bleached hair. There is no rule to do so, but they at some point of history members of this group started to do so. Allegedly to resemble more gods their serve. Common fashion choices are also branches in hair and needle coat exactly the same titans wear on their daily routines
Priest - caretakers of temples. They organise all celebrations, plead blessings, prepare sacrifices, keep the shrines clean. Similarly to couriers they wear branches attached to their hats. Also priests wear coats made out of their gods fur, which are collected after ceremonial fur-cutting. Priests are prohibited from ever living the temple, to keep them inside they don't have shoes, gloves or real winter coats. But somone heard them..." this would be the description of titan trapper made by a titan. It was the beginning of the horror, too early to understand or know anything. But the smile is just directed symbol of new gods, in pure darkness you can see only eyes and smile staring at you

Localizing A Magical Journal

When I was starting out, every book I read on the subject of witchcraft seemed to contain a long list of crystals and imported herbs. Many of these were not easily accessible and didn't fit into my personal practice. Magic came easier to me and became significantly more meaningful after I started localizing my practice.
It has also made writing my magical journal that much easier. Even after over a decade of practice, I still found the task of writing a grimoire to be a daunting one. Adding more local and personal elements to my practice has helped me to organize my journal, making the act of actually writing in it much less strenuous.
If you're looking to localize your grimoire and don't know how to get started, here are a few ideas:
Sections for Native and Invasive Plants
This section can include folklore, culinary uses, medicinal uses, cultivation, a planting calendar, which animals/insects they attract, and a personal correspondence list. I would write one chapter for invasive plants and another for native ones. Additionally, you could add a section for garden crops if desired. I would also add notes on toxicity to humans and pets.
Why work with invasive plants? Because they're abundant! Foraging them helps reduce their population and we get the benefit of a new plant to use in our practice. In fact, mugwort, a popular herb among the occult community, is an invasive plant where I live.
Local Animal Symbolism Section
I organize my animal symbolism section by mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and fish. These chapters can include folklore, physical characteristics, behavior, habitat, diet, and correspondences/symbolism.
Entries can be made more personal by observing animals and recording experiences (just no hand feeding or interacting). I also like to include different forms of veneration. This can be spiritual in nature, like leaving offerings, or mundane, like installing a nesting box for birds.
A chapter on bugs and insects is also a good idea. This could be helpful if you keep an outdoor garden and want to record information on common pests and pollinators.
Local Stones and Crystals
One of the least ethical occult practices, in my opinion, is the use of crystals. The rising popularity of crystals is the cause of a lot of suffering. Does that rose quartz really promote love when it was sourced through child labor? It's important to know where your crystals come from and how they are harvested.
One way to localize your stone and crystal collection is to research which are specific to your area and where to find them. For example, there are certain rivers in my area that contain agate, jasper, and quartz. If you can't go out and search for them yourself, finding an ethical distributor to purchase from is more than sufficient.
Entries can include their composition, how they are formed, what they are used for, and personal correspondences.
Family Recipies and Local Edible Plants
I imagine that having a recipe section would be very important to a practitioner who performs most of their workings in the kitchen. I love to cook, but it rarely makes its way into my practice unless I'm preparing an offering of some sort. Either way, I think that having even a small section of culinary recipes can be beneficial, because it adds a personal element to a grimoire.
I would include your favorite recipes, family recipes, and even dishes that can be made from locally foraged plants. Correspondences can also be noted for each dish and recipes can be specific to certain deities, holidays, or workings.
Urban Legends and Local Superstitions
Urban legends and local ghost stories can be a fun addition to any personal grimoire. You can research the origins of these stories, read the personal experiences of others, and record them in your journal. You can also visit places associated with urban legends (only if it's safe and legal to do so) and record your own experiences.
Another way of localizing your grimoire is to research common superstitions in your area and where they come from, or record your own family superstitions.
Local Spirits and Places of Importance
For spirit workers, research local spirits and entities, their associations, appearance, and origins. In addition to this, write individual entries on spirits that you work with personally. I would include their assumed appearance, location, personality, how to call them, preferred offerings, and areas of strength/weakness. You can also add a section on thoughtforms, if you use them in your practice.
It's also important to think about which local areas are significant to you personally. Is it a river? A clearing in the woods? A hiking trail? Your own backyard? Make a list of areas that inspire you. How can you get there? What grows there? What kind of animals live there? Are there spirits? Would you perform specific workings in these areas?
