are you tired of how many character tournaments just become a popularity contest?

how regardless of seeding, even high contenders can almost arbitrarily be knocked out early on, leaving you with nothing to root for?

if you're feeling that, and if you like any webcomics, you should participate in the webcomic character tournament!

the primary goals of this tournament are:

to celebrate the medium of webcomics as a whole

to find new webcomics to read, and to recommend your own favorites

to highlight indie creators and help them build a wider audience

to have fun rooting for and celebrating your favorite characters!

in order to accomplish these goals, instead of a single elimination bracket, i will be using a mcmahon system inspired tournament structure!

this means that no character will be eliminated, and you can participate in polls rooting for your favorite character throughout all the rounds. characters will also be roughly matched up based on a system that determines how well known their work is, so most rounds should be relatively evenly matched, allowing people to fight for their favorites on their own merits

more details about how the mcmahon tournament will work can be found under the cut!

no submission is specifically banned, but try to keep in mind the spirit of this tournament when deciding what to submit.

under the cut after my more detailed description of the tournament structure, i also ramble in a lot more detail about my philosophy regarding submission eligibility, but it's not necessary to read all that before submitting characters

mcmahon tournament details:

matchups will be decided based off of a survey sent out after submissions are over gauging participants' familiarity with all of the competing characters' source materials. each character will be assigned points based off of how known their source material is, and each character will go up against a character with a similar popularity score for the first round

characters will be awarded points based off of if they lose, win, or tie their match and have that added to their total score, and then they will again be paired against a character with a similar updated score

depending on how many characters are participating, this process can continue either until there is a definitive ranking of all characters, or until just a few top winners are clear

i haven't entirely decided on specifics such as whether points will be awarded by a simple 0 for a loss, 0.5 for a tie, 1 for a win or by percentage of the vote, and if initial popularity points will be counted in the final ranking, or if i will try to rank winners from within their initial popularity categories, but i hope that won't matter too much, because in my opinion the main fun of this isn't the final results, it's for people to have fun in the individual rounds seeing their favorite character's points go up!

submission guidelines:

if you are submitting characters from extremely popular webcomics, try to limit yourself to just characters that are among your top favorites of all time, and maybe try to submit stuff from lesser known works as well

similar goes for webcomics that are more widely known for adaptations into other media forms (one punch man, tower of god, heartstopper, etc.)

i'm not specifically banning any comic for having bigoted content or its creator being a bad person, there's a wide scale of stuff i could decide to include in that definition or not. in the goal of celebrating favorite characters, obviously a lot of people love characters despite flaws in the work they're from, but also keep in mind the goals of recommending works to other people, and helping uplift and promote creators you like, and try to find a reasonable balance from there

what counts as a webcomic:

physically published works that you can find pirated or scanlated online probably don't count

comics whose publication is centered around physical releases, who also have simultaneous online releases by their publishers (comics on manga plus or comixology, newspaper strips with online sites, etc.) probably don't count

comics published through traditional publishers that are exclusively online (such as shōnen jump+ comics) still probably don't count

comics published online through companies that exclusively publish online (such as lezhin) are still discouraged

stuff like line webtoon or tapas official comics are more acceptable, as there are a lot of free comics from independent creators around them and many of these comics started out that way themselves, so they exist within a culture of webcomics more so than the aforementioned comic categories

stuff that is paywalled beyond just having an early release system is discouraged

comics that are no longer online but accessible through archives are fine though, especially in the wake of sites like smackjeeves being deleted there's a lot of stuff in webcomic history that can only be found that way now!

webtoon style comics absolutely count as webcomics, they're an exciting way of fully making use of webcomics' digital format! simultaneously however, i feel like with the rise of mobile webtoon apps, there are many people who read webtoon style comics but who dont further engage with webcomics, so i'd definitely encourage submitting a variety of styles of webcomic!

none of these rules are set! feel free to submit whatever you want, i just list them so you can try to find a balance between the different goals of this tournament when submitting stuff.

anyone can submit as many characters as you want, but just maybe if you find that a lot of your submission ideas are from comics in some of the more discouraged categories, limit yourself in how many you submit from those categories and only submit characters if they're absolute favorites of yours you want the opportunity to celebrate, and maybe try to also submit a character from something that isn't in a discouraged category too!

theres no penalty for not going with this, but i think because choosing characters by number of nominees doesn't really align with my intentions for this, depending on how easy it is to sort submissions i might just go off of vibes, so you might just be less likely to have a character make it to the tournament if their comic is in more heavily discouraged categories is all

Damian:

I imagine that you two met back in the Teen Titans, right when Damian just entered. Back then you were just kids and Damian was a well-known prick. You barely conversed for the first long while, the stories you heard from both Rachel (Raven) and Jaime (Blue beetle) made you nervous to be in the same room as the green-eyed Robin.

Damian was known for being wary of humans with powers above the natural, he had learned to not trust metahumans from his father, who had a well-known distaste for them. So, you considered it best to keep your distance from him lest he lashed out at you.

 Damian doesn’t notice or care much for you either in the beginning, but he does want to be a good superhero. To achieve that goal he has to at least know and, preferably, be able to work with all of his teammates, you included.

However, as Damian tries to approach you, he realises that his reputation precedes him. You leave the room as soon as he arrives, and any time he catches you alone, you’re quick to drag in Jaime or Koriand’r as a barrier between you two.

Damian doesn’t understand why you’re so adamant about not conversing with him and he gets angry at you for being unprofessional. He tries to look at your files through a copy of Koriand’r’s hard drive, (which he made as soon as he joined the Teen Titans), and he finds very little about you. You’re a meta human with ice abilities, nothing special there, your past is a bit murky, but ultimately nothing too out of the ordinary. He finds nothing that would pit the two of you as natural enemies. What is it that you dislike so much about him?

Damian doesn’t realise that his predisposition to be cautious of Meta humans and his aggressive personality has effectively scared you off.

It might take a few years of him slowly chipping away at your defences for the two of you to actually have a proper conversation, and when you finally do, I can imagine that it is after a harsh mission. 

Perhaps the mission was one of those where everyone’s lives hung by a thin thread, where one wrong move could mean the difference between life and death. You and Robin were the only ones with a chance of fighting back, the others were either held down or in such bad states that their survival afterwards wasn’t even guaranteed. You ran in with your ice powers, making slides, platforms and other useful props for Robin to use.

The two of you discover how well you actually work together. It’s not something anyone would have predicted, Damian’s aggressive attacks with his katana and your snow-themed meta abilities don’t seem like the perfect matchup. Like ketchup and ice cream, good individually but not together. Well, you were! You were a dream team, with you creating protective ice shields for Damian as he took the role of the more confrontational attacker, and together you managed to defeat the enemy which had taken down the entire rest of the team.

For the first time since getting to know each other, you both let down your guards. Damian practically runs to you after the fight, filled with so much adrenaline that he can barely contain himself as he wraps you up in a tight bone-crushing hug. You reciprocate it, so out of it and ecstatic you’ve saved your friends/second family that you don’t even remember why you were ever so apprehensive of Damian.

After the fight, the two of you slowly start to hang out around the Teen Titans tower, with and without the others. You gain a tradition of getting ice cream together every Saturday in one of the nearby parlours. Sometimes, Rachel and Jaime join you. When they do, you guys usually all go to your favourite restaurants and just relax, the four of you might be the least chaotic of the group… Although, but that's not saying a whole lot. However, it still creates an atmosphere of calmness, which ou all appreciate.

You would probably consider Damian your best friend after a while, and he feels the same way. You ironically end up becoming the person he trusts the very most on the team. Whenever there’s trouble, you two instinctively group together to solve it.

On a dark summer night, you and Damian open up to each other about your past. You pity his harsh upbringing and he makes you promise to never stop being his friend, you do, and he returns the promise. It feels nice to have someone who you can rely on, especially in a world so ever-changing as the vigilante circles.  

One day, on a holiday trip back to Gotham, Damian gets into a fight with his father. It’s over something stupid, but Bruce makes a big deal out of it since it’s his youngest son. Damian becomes so enraged that he rips off the Robin logo from his costume, throwing it in Bruce’s face, before vowing to return to his mother. His father doesn’t stop him, Dick tries to convince him to stay, but Damian is too filled with wrath to think clearly. He packs his stuff, takes Titus and leaves the Wayne manor full of negative emotions.

It isn’t until he has walked around half of Gotham, waiting for his mother, whom he knows is already aware of the fight, (the assassin she sent to spy on him wasn’t discreet enough to escape Damian’s peripheral gaze), that he realises he has no way to get back to the team after this. 

He calls you on a whim, he may not be able to bring the entire Teen Titans team, but maybe he’ll be able to bring you. 

You pick up his call immediately and Damian is relieved, even if you’re about to refuse the offer he’ll give, at least he gets to hear your voice one last time. The offer is, of course, to join him at the League of Assassins. He covers up the real reason behind his proposition with a bunch of excuses like, “Oh, the League could really use someone with Ice powers, it’s unbearably hot in Eth Alth'eban!” or “Yeah, you’re a great fighter and with your ice meta-ability, you could be a great asset to the league”.

Damian’s excuses are a waste of time, however. As soon as you hear Damian explain why he’s leaving, you’re on board. The Titans were getting a little boring anyway.

So, both of you leave for Eth Alth'eban. Talia is initially not too keen on Damian having brought his friend. She’s all too ready to throw you back to the Teen Titans. That is until Damian explains your ice powers to her. Then she relents, she’s still not appreciative of you, but she’ll let you stay, for her son’s sake.

You start to work for the League and Damian changes from Damian Wayne to Damian Al Ghul. It’s stressful for you in the beginning, it’s a new country, a new side of the fight and you’re so far removed from your friends at Teen Titans. You never regret your decision to join Damian, but sometimes you miss what once was. On top of that, you also come to realise that your ice powers have been weakened by the new climate, it takes you quite a while until you learn how to adapt. Once you do, though, you come to realise just how strong your powers have always been.

You and Damian don’t start to become anything romantic until you’ve both turned eighteen. At this point, Damian has become the new Demon’s head, and you’re right at his side… His right-hand man/woman/person.

It starts off as small romantic and cute gestures, which makes both of you feel butterflies eating your stomachs from the inside out. Damian picking a flower and tucking it behind your ear on a mission. You do all his paperwork for him one evening and tell him with a sticky note that you’ve drawn a heart. Him baking you Baklava on your birthday. They’re small gestures, but they’re invaluable to both of you. 

If any of the assassins or Talia gives you a hard time because of your powers, Damian will immediately back you up, verbally assault them and, (if they don’t back down), fight them on the spot. He doesn’t let anyone speak ill of you. If anyone ever voices discontent over your presence, Damian will take it as a personal insult.

When your romantic escapades have gone on for a while, Damian will start gifting you expensive gifts, (even if you don’t want them), it’s the Al Ghul way. 

Once Damian feels he has buttered you up well enough with gifts galore and all the sweet romantic gestures he can think of, he will finally ask you out. He doesn’t bother with dates and all that, you’ve known each other for years. For Damian, dates are for getting to know people, but you two already know each other in and out, so logically he’d skip that step, they’d just be a waste of time. 

Luckily for Damian, you like him too, so much so that you’re willing to skip all the steps one would usually take before calling someone their significant other.

It doesn’t take more than a year or two before Damian proposes to you. He’s afraid that you might regret a marriage with him, though, and he voices these concerns before letting you give him an answer. He looks a little pathetic as he sits on one knee on the sandy floors of the League’s barracks, ring in hand and listing all the reasons why it would be totally okay if you said no, but also attempting to convince you that he’ll do everything to not make that happen… You don’t doubt his words, you know Damian well enough to know that he’d never intentionally hurt you.

Your time spent engaged is short. Talia is horrified, at first, when she learns that you will be the one to carry the title of the Demon’s spouse, but she lets up once she starts to outweigh the pros and cons of other possible marriage candidates for her son. She will never think that you’re entirely good enough for her son, but given your strong meta-abilities, she’ll relent and even admit to you that you’re probably the best choice for her son. Don’t take her apprehension personally, it wouldn’t have mattered who you are, she simply doesn’t think anyone could ever be nearly good enough for her only son.

When you and Damian get married, you might invite your entire team to the wedding. I mean, just for one day you can bury the axe and forget that you and Damian are technically their enemies now, on what you once would’ve considered the bad side.

So, in conclusion. Damian and you would have a rocky start as a result of your powers, but you would slowly become inseparable. After your marriage, Damian would never be able to even consider a life without you.

Garfield Logan/Beast Boy:

I imagine that the two of you met while in Doom Patrol. Garfield had just lost his real parents and gotten adopted by Rita Farr (Elasti-girl) and Steve Dayton (Mento). He was in a rough place and with his meta-abilities growing at a fast pace, he was in desperate need of a friend his age. Well, you were the only one on Doom Patrol that wasn’t already an adult.

I can imagine that you had been picked up by the chief (the co-leader and advisor of the Doom Patrol) at an incredibly young age after you froze one of your family members to the point of near death. It was all an accident, of course. But your parent(s) realised that they couldn’t have you any longer after that. You were too powerful for them to handle.

You had been on Doom Patrol for a while when Garfield came along and you received him with open arms, happy to finally have someone your age to fight alongside. You two become fast friends, his chatty nature is hard to not be charmed by and he absolutely adored your personality. You helped him forget the tragedy that tore his birth parents from him, even if only for a moment and he is profoundly grateful for that.

When Mento goes insane as a result of prolonged exposure to his power helmet, joining the side of evil. Beast Boy is quick to pack his stuff, grab you and join the Teen Titans.

The breakdown of his adoptive father’s mental health is yet another blow to Garfield. First, both of his real parents died and now his adoptive father is insane and ready to kill him at any given moment. Still, in true Beast Boy fashion, he refuses to let anyone see him hurting, instead covering it up with an even more jovial attitude.

Sometimes though, late at night, he’ll knock on the door to your room. When you answer and let him in, closing the door behind you, he’ll break down and cry into your shoulder for hours. He feels like you and his adoptive mother are the only two people he has left. That is one of the reasons why he treasures you deeply. 

While on the Teen Titans, your ice-wielding abilities develop massively. Starfire is your natural sparring partner, after all, she can shoot out flames, powered by the sun itself. You’ll develop a great friendship with Koriand’r, which Garfield won’t admit that he’s a little jealous of. But he quickly gets over himself when he realises that what you and he have is unlike anything you could ever gain with the other Titans. 

You two know each other so well that you always order for each other in restaurants, with Garfield always throwing in a quick jab at whatever food you like. Still, he’ll both order and pay for you. As a matter of fact, I can see the two of you just sharing whatever money Rita sends Garfield and Chief sends you. The closest thing to a shared bank account for teens. 

Since Garfield’s adoptive mother, Rita, was an actress back before she joined Doom Patrol, the green boy has actually picked up on her skills pretty well, being a rather good actor himself. He’ll act out the scenes of your favourite movies, expecting you to recreate some of the props in ice so that he can truly reenact the scene. The other Titans find him a little odd for doing so, but you find it delightful, that’s just how Garfield is and you’ve always enjoyed his company.

Sometimes, Garfield might ask you to make an ice rink outside, in front of the Titans tower, especially around winter time. Then, he’ll tentatively drag you out on the ice. If you can’t ice skate, he’ll teach you patiently. If you do know how, he’ll start to race you from one side to another, for hours.

The thing about Garfield is that he has endless energy, especially back when you’re both still teens. He’s used to people finding it off-putting. However, you’ve grown up with him, and you can’t imagine a world where he’s any different. Garfield is so grateful that he can simply be himself around you without worrying about scaring you away. It's one of the things that bring you guys so close together. The fact that you’re both meta-humans just adds to this sense of comfort and solidarity he feels around you as well. The other Titans sometimes envy your relationship, the way you two always have each others’ back and the way that you will sometimes just make eye contact and, as if one of you told a silent joke, burst into loud laughter that breaks up any tension that might’ve been previously.

If you have any favourite animals, he’ll constantly turn into them, just to see you smile. There’s nothing he loves more than to make his best friends, you and cyborg, laugh and smile. It makes him feel accomplished... like he isn’t totally useless or a bad omen. On rainy days he loves to turn into a soft cat, a cute rabbit or any other fluffy animal, and then curl up on your lap, relaxing as the sound of rain pelts the many windows of the Titans Tower.

As you two grow up and become adults, Garfield slowly starts to feel magnetised by you. You’re not the first one he felt like this with, there was Terra and other brief crushes, but this one is the most intense he has had yet.  

Still, he is afraid of your reaction. What if you don’t like him like that? What if you go back to Doom Patrol just to get away from the awkwardness that would arrive if you don’t reciprocate his feelings? No! Garfield can’t risk losing you! You mean too much to him, you’re the only one who understands everything he feels! Losing you would be to lose his other half! … There’s also the slight fear that you might shoot icicles after him if he manages to offend you with his confession… He believes that if anyone would be able to do that, it would be him.

To cover up for his passionate crush on you, he’ll start acting goofier, and you’ll be none the wiser, (as explained before, he’s a great actor). He’ll also start to take up weirdly domestic habits like cooking for you, cleaning up both of your rooms and … sewing your suit back together after a fight? How in the world he learned that, you have no idea. It is these habits which tune you into the fact that something is off with him. You at first believe it to be a sort of coping mechanism. In reality, though, he’s trying to prove to you that he’d be a good boyfriend.

If you confront him about it, he might crack a little and admit that he simply likes you a lot and wants to help you in any way he can. I imagine that this is when you slowly start to see your old friend in a different light… Was he always that adorable? That good-looking? You never really noticed before.

Garfield will definitely be the one confessing his feelings first. It’ll be during the wind-down period after a particularly harsh mission. You and Beast Boy will be relaxing in your room, both playing video games. When you manage to beat Garfield, he pretends to accuse you of cheating. Even though you both know it’s just for fun, you still shoot a weak ice ray at his feet, in retaliation, causing him to stumble to the ground, dragging you down with him. 

You’ll end up colliding with his chest and Garfield will have turned into a big and squishy animal to soften your fall, perhaps a brown bear? … Well, a green bear. When he turns back into himself, you both realise how close your faces are. When you don’t pull away, Garfield will confess on accident. Something like him whispering “You’re so beautiful, you know?” Of course, you’ll end up a blushing mess with the way he simply doubles down and keeps complimenting you. You have no flaws in Garfield’s eyes, you were simply created to be the perfect example of a person.

At the end of his rant about how wonderful you are, Garfield will finally confess, asking if you would perhaps… just maybe…if it wouldn’t be too much of an inconvenience… go out with him? He’ll rant about how he knows that his green skin might be a turn-off for you, how he knows he can be too energetic sometimes, and how he understands that he isn’t necessarily the most stable of people… But he’ll do his best to improve, he promises!

You cut his rant short, crashing your lips into his with a passion you weren’t even aware that you possessed. Garfield is so stunned that it takes him a good while to reciprocate, but when he does? Oh wow… You never realised how good of a kisser your best friend was… So good, in fact, that you totally forget to defrost his feet until he has to ask you to please do so before he gets major frostbites. You both laugh at that, but you concede to his request. After all, it’s probably not a good beginning to a romantic relationship to freeze off your boyfriend’s feet…

That’s how the two of you start going out with each other. Those in the team who have known you guys for years are not surprised in the least that you ended up together… They’re more astonished that it took so long.  

You two stay together as partners for years. When you turn too old to stay in the Teen Titans, you decide to venture out as heroes on your own… perhaps you’ll rejoin Rita and the others in the Doom Patrol, or perhaps you’ll do something entirely on your own, as long as you’re together, it doesn’t matter. But on your last day with the Titans, you notice how Garfield isn’t acting like he normally does. It makes you nervous for him, you know that you two are about to experience big changes in your lives, but you’ll do them together, so you thought he would be okay with it… 

Well, it turns out that your worries were unfounded because as you are about to raise a toast with your former teammates, Garfield drops down to one knee. At first, you’re unsure of what is happening, and your powers kick into gear, making the room freezingly cold, despite the warm weather outside. Then, Garfield pulls out a ring, asking you to marry him. The room’s temperature returns to normal, and without any thought given to your answer, you exclaim a loud “Yes!” quickly covering your mouth with both hands as you realise that you practically screamed it out.

Everyone is happy for the two of you, none more than Garfield’s adoptive mother, Rita Farr. When the green boy tells her the news, she cries uncontrollably from pure joy. She’ll hug you both close and congratulate you over and over, to the point where it’s almost a tad embarrassing.

Your wedding will be attended by all of your old teammates, the remaining members of the Doom Patrol and any other friends the two of you may have. It’s beautiful, and you both decided to do it during the winter, just as a quiet reference to your powers. It was Garfield’s idea. You thought it was a bit too mushy when he first suggested the idea, but it slowly grew on you, as you decorated the venue yourself with ice crystals and snowflake-inspired decorations galore. Rita helps hang everything up, she is after all Elasti-girl.

It’s a beautiful event and the two of you become a powerhouse within the vigilante circles, you’ll rarely see one without the other, and if any of your allies ever need help, they know they can count on the two of you.

Stormlight characters have previously encountered Mistborn characters from both Era 1 and Era 2. But in honor of my finally rereading Warbreaker, let’s see what that matchup might be like!

1. Adolin & Siri

Adolin: THREE new elaborate dresses? Every morning?!

Siri: Yes!! And they always had some more in the back too, just in case!

Adolin: And they just...destroyed the ones you didn’t wear?

Siri: I think so! They NEVER repeated options and I know they burned the ones I did wear!

Adolin: Who was designing & crafting half a dozen royal gowns every single day??

Siri: I don’t know! But they must have been AMAZING at their jobs--and very okay with their beautiful work being destroyed.

Denth: You literally tell people that you’re just in it for the money. That you’re not a good person.

Sadeas: And then when I took advantage of his honor and left him to die, he was like...surprised Pikachu face.

Gale is a big softy but wants to be Alpha Male so bad.

He will happily allow you to hold on to his arm, and he will try to act all big and tough when he is a schoolgirl inside.

When he first met you, he thought you were too timid to be the leader of the group. However, your quick thinking proved him wrong.

He loves spending lazy days between battles with you in the fields, teaching you about magic and how he learned it.

Gale always keeps a hand on your lower back when out in public, or he will intertwine your fingers.

Mans is jealous; he will be a big baby if you cling to anyone but him on your outings.

Will literally throw a fit by yanking you into his presence.

He loves watching you commune with nature and the world and is interested in your magical abilities.

Will bend over backward for you. It is gotten for you in a heartbeat if you want or need anything.

He wants you to feel worshiped and treasured. I mean, the only love he has ever had was with a god, so this is only right....right?

When you comfort and remind him he is enough without the lavishing gifts, he is overwhelmed but so happy.

He happily and willingly gives up Mystra for you, not caring about godhood or kingdom.

He loves being with you all the time, and when the illithids are handled, he makes you a permanent fixture in his tower in Waterdeep.

You and Gale were sat out in the open fields just before Baldurs Gate. The Iron Golems proving to be more of a hindrance than initially thought. The team decided to take a breather and devise a plan to get around this issue. However, working on magical skills with Gale was probably more of a distraction, especially with how cute his focusing face was. Sitting quietly watching him enchant a simple thorns spell was fascinating.

Once he had gotten the hang of the basics of a ring of thorns, you congratulated him and wrapped your arms around his midsection. Gale was taken aback, but a quick laugh and warm arms wrapped around you soon replaced every thought in either of your minds. You two had been like this since he saved you from an arrow to the back, so close yet so far. When Elminster told you he was to die, you lay in his arms, crying your eyes out, begging him not to go through with it.

Enjoying the warmth of the hug, you two soon moved to cuddle in the grass, pointing out odd-shaped clouds. You knew you should be planning how to get into Baldur Gate, but this was so nice. Gale was a new normal for you, and you hated to think it could go horribly wrong in any passing days; you wrapped your arms tighter around the man and kissed him on the cheek before burying your face into his neck. Gale had already made up his mind and would fight till his last breath to have a forever with you.

"Honestly, I really wish we'd had more advance notice," Zuki complains, brushing her Umbreon's fur. "We could have put together another performance like we did for you, Solaire."

"I am certain," Solaire says from the window, "that Lugia will not mind. She was always less for pomp and ceremony than I was."

"Oh..."

"I mean, we could still come up with something after all this is over," says Kuni, whose Vaporeon is draped over her arm in a deeply silly position. "I don't think Lugia would mind that! Also, Lugia is so cool—uh, no offense meant to current company."

"None taken." Solaire sounds amused. "It has been some time since last I spoke with him, and I do wish that we could speak more often without some sort of crisis imminent..."

Maria slowly raises a hand. "May I ask a question?"

"Sure!" Naoko giggles as she boops her Espeon's snoot. "Knock yourself out! ...Maybe don't actually do that, though, or at least don't do it on theater property."

"Why are you so insistent that Giovanni will be targeting Lugia?"

"Process of elimination, for one," Zuki says. "You said that Rocket went after Solaire's kids while you were in Kanto, so they're probably not going to try that again. Zapdos at least is in Kalos for some reason, and while both Moltres and Articuno are powerful on their own, neither of them are powerful in a way that would be a legitimate threat to Solaire here. Lugia is."

"Also, type matchups are still a thing for the gods!" Sayo says brightly. "Even if—really, especially if—you wouldn't think they are. They seem to be almost more pronounced in what myths we have? Except for when they aren't."

"Hm." Maria holds out a hand for Sayo's Jolteon to sniff. "I suppose that follows. Then Lugia is a Water-type?"

"See, you'd really think so," Kuni says, "but we're pretty sure she's actually a Psychic-type. She can totally breathe underwater though. So I'm not too worried about her being able to evade Team Rocket, assuming she knows about them."

"The issue," Miki says, looking far more nervous than her Flareon, "is that he probably doesn't know about them. Lugia keeps to himself even more than Ho-oh. We can still try summoning him! But there's no real guarantee he'll answer."

"She almost certainly will," Solaire says, "if the summoner was chosen by me. And if it is in the right place."

Naoko sighs. "This would be so much easier if his tower hadn't burned down!"

"Pardon me." Maria is looking increasingly out of her depth. "Lugia's tower was the one that burned down?"

Emphatic nods from the Kimono Girls. And the bird sticking their head in through the window.

"Lugia's part of the myth is usually seen as a lot more depressing and futile in comparison," Miki says. "But she did try to put the fire out. That is very much a thing that happened."

"And then he left," Solaire says softly, "and he hasn't been seen since. Not even by me."

"...I assume that attempting to summon her in the Burned Tower, then," Maria says, "would be a bad idea."

Nods all around.

"Perhaps not, but I would not attempt that first." Solaire hums thoughtfully, considering the situation. "He was born in the Whirl Islands, in a cave deep below sea level. That is what he told me. Should you summon him there..."

"The Whirl Islands," Maria repeats, looking a little pale. "Where are those, exactly?"

"Oh, they're between Olivine and Cinnabar," Zuki says easily. "You must have passed them on your gym challenge!"

"I suppose," Maria says uncomfortably, "that I did."

"Right!" Zuki claps her hands together, clearly not noticing Maria's increasing discomfort. "Girls, we're going on a field trip! And this time we can even travel together! Maria, are you alright with us meeting you there?"

"Yes, that's... that is fine..."

"Then there's no time to waste. Kimono Girls, let's go summon a god!"

The girls file out the door, accompanied by their Eeveelutions. Miki's the last to leave, and she looks back at Maria, concern in her eyes.

"Are you—sorry," Miki says quickly, and dashes out, Flareon hot on her heels.

Maria breathes in. Breathes out. And, slowly, hauls herself to her feet.

Solaire, head still looking in through the window, looks just as concerned as Miki if not more so.

"Will you be alright?" Solaire asks. "If it helps, I can personally assure you that Lugia is nothing like your... previous encounter..."

"That helps," Maria says briskly. "Please keep assuring me that Lugia is nothing like her. If you do so enough, I might eventually be able to believe you."

Hey! So I saw you were doing matchups and GODS I couldn’t help myself, I’ve always wanted to try one so… here’s a “few” things about myself:

I like to think of myself as a daughter of Hades or Hecate (yes, I’m a female this is NOT a typo), not sure which since I have traits that could branch from either one. I’m said to be loyal, HEAVILY sarcastic, rude yet kind, creative, playful, something about forgetful(?), and impulsive af. There’s just something about doing something first the moment it comes to your brain than thinking about it that just works. I mean, as Leo said, “thinking tends to disrupt the flow of thinking less.” (Wait, what do you mean that isn’t it? Well… close enough). I’ll always be out there making jabs and annoying my friends on the daily, but also showing my concern and affections if they’re not okay. No matter if they’re just sick or tired. I listen to them whenever there’s something going on, and always try to give advice if I could. Even if I’m not the best (horrible) at it.

Can you tell that I love my family- I mean friends? I’m not gonna lie, I’m willing to take a whole punch to the kidneys or bullet to the chest just for them. I’m not sure if I’m exaggerating or not, but, I don’t know, I just feel like I would take series of Ls just for them.

Is that weird? Yeah, it probably is…

Anyway! What else is there to say… oh!

I love swimming, learning about Greek mythology, listening to music (like musicals), and vibing all around. There’s nothing better than just chilling around (preferably in bed) after another tedious day of life and it’s… life. It just hits RIGHT. But I HATE insects, especially flies. If I see those stupid, fat, spindly-legged ass creatures then I’m running away with my tail between my legs. I don’t know why those scare me in particular, but they do. It’s weird.

You were armed with a flyswatter, in a fighting position, on top of your bunk and swatting aimlessly in the air. You were NOT going to back down this time. You forgot a few things occasionally, but you weren’t prepared for forgetting to shut your cabin door behind you before going to eat breakfast. You yelped out in fear as a ginormous mosquito flew inches away from your face. So this is how I die, you thought, annoyed at your previous forgetfulness. You spent a good 20 minutes up there fighting the urge to scream. You siblings were already out and about the camp and were nowhere near to help you. You had made a very handy fly repellent and bug spray but it was sitting on the potions-work table on the opposite side of the cabin. Stealth Mission Kill Flies: GO you decided to pull a mission impossible and jump your way over to the table before they closed in on you. You positioned yourself, ready to jump onto the other bunk a few feet away. 3…2….1..JUMP, you leapt up into the air and face planted onto the other top bunk. Thank the Gods. “YES” You yelled out, excited to finally be one step closer to your goal. You readied yourself for another leap of faith, only to hear a stifled laugh, before you looked over in horror At Leo Valdez, who had just witnessed that whole thing. “Oh…heyy Leo, I can explain-” you flushed with embarrassment. “No need, I think I know what’s going on.” Leo walked over to the bunk you were currently towering over. He looked up at you with an amused smirk across his face. You had a hard time trying to fake annoyance, rather than succumbing to the blush now covering your cheeks. As if on cue, a swarm of big ass mosquitos darted toward you swarming across your head and getting in your face. You yelled out swatting in every direction and didn’t notice how unbalanced you were. You got most of them, except for one, as you reached out to swat him you lost your balance on the edge of the bunk and fell off the top. You braced yourself, expecting to hit the hard wooden floors, when much to your surprise you felt two arms wrapped around you and your head leaning against a shoulder. Oh GODS, Leo had caught you from your fall. You sat there for a second before coming to your senses and jumping out of his grasp. “I’m so so sorry, Leo.” you began to apologize “I swear I’ll be more-” you covered your face with your hands, “No-No problem,”He shook his head, face red as a tomato “it’s all good, Just didn’t expect you to fall for me so early in the morning” He gave you a winning grin before walking over to the bug spray and warding off your unwanted intruders. “I just stopped by to see if you wanted to head down to the lake together to meet up with Piper and Jason?” he held out his hand to you. You rolled your eyes at his cheesy line before debating your plans for the day, “I guess as long as long as we don’t miss training later” You grabbed his hand, fingers interlocked and bit your lip to hide your growing smile. “Wouldn’t dream of it” he led the way out of the dark cabin and into the daylight outside. My hero, you thought. But you'd never tell him that....

You and Leo are chaotic energy X 2 honestly X10. Like non stop banter at Camp, on the Argo II, everywhere you guys go it’s like a contest to see who gets the final say. There 100% is a chalkboard somewhere on board with a tally of arguments/ conversations won (you’re in the lead with about 27, Leo has 22). 

While you’re both funny people to be around, you are able to find this sensitivity with certain topics and especially with Leo and his trauma surrounding his mom’s death, you always try your hardest to comfort him, even if you don’t know exactly what to say. He appreciates every moment of it, and you kinda just hold him in your arms as he vents to you.

Lake dates are totally a thing, whether it’s just you two, or  with the whole prophecy of 7 in tow you guys make it a habit to go on swims and walks along the shore of the lake every night to take a break from the tiring life of a demigod child of prophecy. 

Leo admires the fire you have within you, to stand up for others, and to speak your mind, he knows you to be the most loyal person at camp. You’re like the big sister for all the little kids, I imagine you especially doting on the demigod kids who are children of minor gods and that end up getting overlooked at times. You’re their advocate and Leo is just HEART EYES. 

After coming back from that final battle with Gaia, you needed a few days to process everything and to be alone, away from other people. Leo was more than happy to calm down your normal schedules and spend a few days on your bunk talking, reading, or just napping in peace and quiet.

because i have far too much time on my hands, i thought it would be fun to make a poll for gorillaz songs, pitting them against each other in a fight to the death until the one true best gorillaz song emerges victorious.

Hi!! Congrats on 400!! For your matchup and headcanons event, I would like Bungou Stray Dogs from either the ADA or the Port Mafia and Tower of God any male character from season 1 - 2!

I am ISTP and a Gemini. I am a straight female, so I would want my matchups to be male. My fave colors would be teal, orange, and purple. My fave aesthetic would be pastel/cutesy goth. My fave food is sushi. My friends/ family would describe me as quiet, reserved, dirty minded, petty, and caring. I would describe myself as very introverted, the kind of person who may seem cold on the outside, but once I get comfortable, I let loose more. My hobbies are arts and crafts, mostly painting, listening to music, and going on walks. My biggest flaw I think, is my anxiety. My fave thing to do when going out is going to a park that is near my place with ducks and geese and feeding them! My love language is quality time. Off. like he doesnt Walk Correctly obviously, but he also doesnt seem to understand blinking very well (too used to being able to deploy an invisible third eyelid to keep the water out of his eyes), and hes not much better at breathing without gills either. extreme uncanny valley. itd be fucked up if this really Did go the little mermaid poor reader doesnt quite recognize humanzai as the monster that almost killed them and has been actively stalking them ever since. like, now that he isnt covered in scales and theres no long, razor sharp teeth in his mouth and no ten foot long tail behind him at all times he seems like a different guy. god knows hed take advantage of THAT misunderstanding. also, chuuya and fyodor is a yandere match-up ive never considered before but holy FUCK is it terrifying. like, between chuuya's brute strength and fyodor's... fyodor-ness, theres really no exit in sight, huh? yeesh. - dazai anon (im on computer now so now bandage emoji 4 me :( )

well apart from the fact that he's still getting used to the legs and the eyes and the significantly weaker fingers and toes and all that, dazai is just not used to the whole human experience. he's tall, towering over most people he meets and coupled with the staring and blank expression, he's a little frightening. the good thing about all this, however, is that you don't recognise him without his claws and fangs and scales and what not. the legs, for one, convince you that he's definitely not the creature that's been haunting you, even though the hair and those eyes look all too familiar.

and maybe the way he grabs you and smiles, the way his grip tightens on you when someone else walks past, the way he whines into your shoulder about not knowing anyone here reminds you way too much of dazai. but this is just a newcomer to the town, someone unfamiliar with his surroundings and dependent on your help, not yet integrated into society and too shy to talk to anyone else.

get ready, because dazai is going to take advantage of this disguise to become your new best (and only) friend! now that he can do what these other humans can, you won't ask anyone else to walk with you by the beach or hang out together, right? once he finds a more permanent solution that lets him switch between human and monster, he'll never have to leave you alone !
