Battle Arena Toshinden Series - 1996/2009 ⚔️💥👊🕹️🗡️🤺
Battle Arena Toshinden is a 1995 fighting game developed by Tamsoft and published by Takara for the PlayStation. It was one of the first fighting games to feature polygonal characters in a 3D environment and introduced a sidestep manoeuvre that helped define 3D fighting games. Originally developed as a PlayStation exclusive, it was later ported to Sega Saturn (Battle Arena Toshinden Remix), Game Boy, MS-DOS and Windows.
Following the release of spin off title Battle Arena NiToshinden in 1996 the stand alone Sega Saturn title Battle Arena Toshinden Ultimate Revenge Attack would follow. This would be the final entry in the series to appear on the Saturn with Battle Arena Toshinden 3 and Toshinden 4 being exclusive to the PlayStation.
As would be the two spin off titles that were released in 1997 and 1998 with Puzzle Arena Toshinden and Toshinden Card Quest. Toshinden 4 or Toshinden Subaru would be the final entry in the Toshinden series when it released in 1999.
That would be until 2008 when the original developer and publisher now Takara Tomy along with developer Dream Factory announced a new entry in the series. The following year in 2009 Toshinden would be released for the Wii, this new entry however was not related to the original series story as well as doing away with the originals weapon based fighting. #toshinden #playstation #youtubeshorts #shortsvideo #segasaturn #gameboy

Shoutout to Toshinden 4 because I can^^
I just realized that I've fallen victim to a type of confirmation bias with regards to video game graphics where I've come to valorize the limitations of older generations of video games because of some games that found the best possible ways to work around those limitations
Like, let's be fair: games like Spyro, Resident Evil 2, and Silent Hill all did amazing things on the PS1, specifically in terms of how they found ways to work around the console's limited ability to render large quantities of textured polygons at steady frame rates, but most games of that era didn't utilize those workarounds and ended up looking like shit. (I mean there is a certain amount of charm to that raw PS1 aesthetic without any technical wizardry but it does look a hell of a lot more dated than the aforementioned games)
We end up remembering the Spyros of each console generation even though it's probably the Battle Arena Toshindens and Tobals and Bubsy 3Ds that were most representative of those console generations by and large.
And like, there surely still are limitations on modern hardware and even though I personally vibe more with distinctive aesthetics over raw fidelity I am 100% sure that right now some artist working on current limitations is using some absolutely amazingly creative workarounds that will be remembered in coming years as peak 2023 graphics in terms of how it worked around the limitations of our time.

What have been your personal highlights during the past console generations, of you can remember?
I think I have a few games for damn near every console I’ve owned that were personal highlights for me.
Super Nintendo
Final Fight (My first ever actual official console video game that I ever played and owned. It’s what truly opened the flood gates when it comes to video games for me and not only will it always hold a special place in my heart for that but it’s just really fun to play.)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters/Turtles In Time (I can’t even begin to sum up how much I enjoyed these TMNT games. Tournament Fighters for me at that time was like the best fighting game ever; what the fuck is even Street Fighter II Turbo? Also, Turtles In Time was like that direct connection to the animated series and I absolutely loved that series so as a TMNT fan these games were so far up my alley.)
Wolverine: Adamantium Rage (That’s always going to be a highlight if for nothing else that lit-ass theme/beat alone)
The Pagemaster (It was the game I got along with Final Fight and while I never did beat that game I really enjoyed the hell out of it. Not to mention the movie is a fucking gem.)
PlayStation
Mega Man Legends (To me that’s always going to be one of the best Mega Man iterations right next to Battle Network. It’s also my first PSOne game. Lemme tell you the level of triggered I am at the fact that it’s on PSN for PS3 along with the sequel which I never got to play but nowhere to be found on PS4. That is an absolute crime and this Mega Man deserves a lot more respect and appreciation.)
Legend of Legaia (That game just caught my attention almost instantly when those commercials started dropping. I just needed it, I needed to play it and I got it and I played it and it felt just as good as I had hoped......but I never made it too far for 2 very specific reasons. 1. Did not have a memory card, could not find a memory card and 2. The damn disc got damaged so I never got to get past the very first chapter and I never got to meet that game’s Brock and Misty. I had such a connection for this game and I never got to truly play it and that shit’s gonna stick with me for fucking ever. Could never manage to find that game again and my PSOne got stolen but that part comes later.)
Battle Arena Toshniden (Now when I say I was addicted to that game best believe I was ADDICTED to that game. A lot of the characters and voice lines of that game is still imprinted in my brain to this day. I played that thing more than any other fighting game around at that time. The characters just looked so cool to me and I loved the whole different set of weapons they came with. I was obsessed.)
PlayStation 2
Max Payne (My first rated M game as well as my first PS2 game in general. There was a level of anxiety that came with playing this game because it felt so down to earth compared to everything else I’ve played before and it was so gritty that the danger was just exuding through the screen. It never occurred to me at the time that I was playing a game that would later be considered as something that revolutionized the genre as well as the industry but damn if it wasn’t making so many impressions on me.)
Grand Theft Auto III/Vice City/San Andreas (The most I can say is those games were just so much fun and felt so freeing to play. I never knew sandbox games could be such a thing and from that point on it was a whole new world. I appreciate that PS4 actually has the ports for them because I’m kinda feeling the urge to go back. GTA III was always my personal most favorite out of the 3.)
Def Jam Vendetta/Fight For NY (Rappers/actors and fighting games. Sounds like a combo that should be absolute trash but damn if they didn’t nail that shit. I would love for them to be on PSN because I need to go back.)
Marvel Nemesis: Rise Of The Imperfects (I absolutely loved the way this game played and I loved the set up to it. It is just sorely underrated in my eyes. It was dark but it was absolutely fun and I appreciated how every character felt to play. Also, those destructive arenas and how wide they’d span was my shit.)
XBOX 360
Basically everything Valve: Portal/Portal 2/Left 4 Dead/Left 4 Dead 2/Team Fortress 2/Half Life 2 (”Whats inside the Orange Box?”. I had absolutely no love for ANYTHING first person shooter related because I NEEDED to see my character on screen. If I couldn’t see my character there was no point BUT that all changed when I played Left 4 Dead. That game drew me in so hard and so fast and what made that even more impressive is I was never about horror games either but now they got me hooked. So I’m out here living my L4D life and then that just perfect commercial starts playing on television. “What’s inside the Orange Box?”. From style to presentation they just nailed the perfect vibe because it immediately caught my attention and then I’m finding out it’s a collection of games that were done by the people who made my one of my most favorite games so I gotta jump it. Needless to say I was not disappointed. I feel in love with everything. What I am disappointed in, however, is Valve feeling as if they’re too good to be on consoles now. I would like to go back to a lot of these worlds but you ain’t gonna catch me burning my PC for it.)
And now I think I will stop here before I end up going on forever which would be very easy for me to do on this subject. So yeah; there are quite a few highlights for me that are just about impossible to forget. I haven’t even gotten to touch on the handhelds. Okay; I’ll touch on 2 very quickly.
Pokemon Blue for GameBoy Color (My first Gameboy and Pokemon game and the circumstances at which I got it makes it a very special memory for me.)
Mega Man: Battle Network for GameBoy Advance (It took 2 of my biggest interests which was Mega Man and the internet and brought them together in what was in my opinion a flawless execution. I love the style, I loved the characters, I loved the story and I loved the music. If I were to ever play a GameBoy game on my television it would be for the Battle Network series.)

Toshinden URA Trivia:
Ron Ron was a brand new character introduced in Battle Arena Toshinden: Ultimate Revenge Attack, alongside Ripper, Replicant and Wolf. She was chief scientist for the “Toshinhei Project” which was being conducted by Interpol.
What is Toshinden? A game similar to Virtua Fighter and Tekken. Toshinden died out because they released the games in unison. Soon later to be overshadowed by Tekken and Soul Edge.
Sofia from Toshinden was once the short-lived mascot for PlayStation.
Toshinden URA is the sequel to Toshinden S.
She created Replicant, a warrior for peace enforcement and anti-terrorist use. When Ron Ron finished creating the prototype, it was stolen by her superior Wolf.
She is Chinese, in battle she throws bombs, uses a stun gun which also seems to be a wand and hammer. When using her weapon to spark fire while shouting out Biri Biri Wand! She is weak and slow in battle, but is also strong if used correctly. Her “Pin Ball” spinning attack is powerful. She’ll jump in the air and throw multiple bombs.
She alongside Ripper was a “Sega Saturn” exclusive and did not appear in the PlayStation sequels. The only PlayStation game she appeared in was Toshinden Card Quest.
In Toshinden URA she ratios the female playable characters. Ellis, Sofia, Tracy, making four.
The Toshinden series is defunct.
The best Toshinden game is the Sega Saturn release URA. Especially Ellis’ new model. Which was only created because the Sega Saturn could not handle her usual detailed costume. But the Sega Saturn costume suits her more, and also makes her match Sofia.
Toshinden is forgotten today. Nobody remembers it. New gamers have no idea what it is. There will probably never be a remake or remaster.
War Budokai a Toshinden remake with no connection to the original series was released for the Wii in 2009 and was a Japanese exclusive. The game was said to have flopped.
The original characters were “elderly” by Toshinden 4, and most of them retired from battle. The only character to appear in Toshinden 4 was Eiji Shinjo.

My SSBU Roster DLC Wish List
Decided to update my list of most wanted Smash Bros. fighters. And of course since Min Min was added to the roster, that means spirits officially do not deconfirm possible roster candidates! So this time, NO HOLDS BARRED! Also, I don't care how unlikely one of my selections is, this is my list, I do whuh I wan'! PLAUSIBILITY BE DAMNED!
I'll also be listing these in ascending order, building up to my #1 most wanted fighter!
Here we go!
=====================
#10:

PORKY MINCH
I think we could use another Earthbound/Mother rep, and who better than this lil bastard? He served as a major antagonist in both Earthbound/Mother 2 and Mother 3, and was also a boss in Brawl, so it seems like he'd be a pretty good choice for a future fighter!
=====================
#9:

GENO
Yeah, tons of people want Geno in the game, and I'm definitely among them! SMRPG is a fondly remembered classic, and I think Geno has good potential as a playable fighter! Hopefully we'll get to see this guy in action!
=====================
#8:

SCORPION
HEAR ME OUT! Yeah, Mortal Kombat is DEFINITELY NOT family friendly, but then again neither is Bayonetta. And I don't think it'd be difficult to incorporate Scorpion's familiar moveset without the gore. And come on, you know you want that kickass Mortal Kombat theme in the game! lol
.
youtube
=====================
#7:

CAPTAIN SYRUP
Wario Land desperately needs more love, and I think Captain Syrup would be the perfect character to represent that series! And if they utilize callbacks well enough, then she could have a very fun and interesting moveset!
=====================
#6:

SORA
Definitely a long shot considering Kingdom Hearts is a Disney franchise, but I'd personally love to see Sora rubbing elbows with some of gaming's most iconic characters!
=====================
#5:

RAYMAN
I'm pretty damn fond of the Rayman series, and I think this guy has what it takes to be an awesome addition to the roster! Especially if they take full advantage of all the powerups throughout the series!
=====================
#4:

SHANTAE
I'm also a big fan of the Shantae series of games! And considering all of Shantae's magical abilities and many transformations, I know she could be a fun and unique addition to the roster!
=====================
#3:

EARTHWORM JIM
Yeah, this entry is pretty much just my inner child screaming out for one of my earliest video game obsessions. lol
But I really do think Jim would be an excellent addition to the roster with a fun and bizarre moveset and wacky animations! And this wouldn't even be Jim's first appearance as a guest character in a fighting game (having already appeared in Clayfighter 63 1/3 and Battle Arena Toshinden).
=====================
#2:

DR. EGGMAN
The way I see it, if other third party series (such as Street Fighter and Castlevania) can have multiple reps, why not Sonic? And I personally wouldn't have anyone other than the nefarious Doctor himself filling that spot! And they could put him in a small mech to fight in (a la Sonic The Fighters)! Seriously though, I would freak the f*** out from sheer geeky joy if Eggman ever got added to the roster! :D
=====================
AND MY #1 MOST WANTED DLC FIGHTER IS....
.........
.........
.........
.
.
.
.

CRASH BANDICOOT!
Seriously, Crash would be so frikkin PERFECT in Smash Bros.! He's a fun and unique character with great moveset potential, his game franchise is both celebrated and long lived (with a pretty strong resurgence in recent years), and the Crash Bandicoot series has had some good history of collaborating with Nintendo! Not to mention that Crash started out as a rival mascot to both Nintendo and Sega, so seeing him go toe-to-toe with Mario and Sonic would be pretty damn epic! :D
=====================
So yeah, there's my list. lol
I can only hope at least one of these characters will make it onto the roster! *crosses fingers*

A little butterfly told me Nobutoshi Canna will be replacing Toru Igarashi as the voice of Anji Mito (apparently he’s retired/declined the role).
Sad to see Igarashi go, but let's look on the bright side of things:
Canna voices Knuckles the Echidna in many of the Sonic games, Camus Aquarius in Saint Seiya, Jann Lee in DoA6 (Dead or Alive 5/6), Yamazaki Susumu in Yakuza Online, Electro in Spiderman 2018, Achilles/Cao Pi in Warriors Orochi 4, Caster in Fate/Grand Order Arcade, and Lancer in Fate/Extella Link, Kabuto Yakushi in the Naruto/Boruto games, he also voices Basara Nekki in Super Robot Wars Z3/, he voices Thouzer/Souther in Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 1+2, Sleipnir in Shining Blade, Axel Almer in Super Robot Wars OG, Harry Flynn in Uncharted 2, Kai in Phantasy Star Zero, Takaya Sakaki in Persona 3, Maxi in Soul Calibur I-III, Roland in Shin Megami Tensei: DDS2, Spider in Megaman X Command Mission, Nooj in Final Fantasy X-2, Yugo Ogami in Bloody Roar, Abel/Veil in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, Hayato Kanzaki in Star Gladiator, Bob/Michael in Policenauts... and last but NOT least:
GUTS from Berserk in TWO games: Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage (Dreamcast) Berserk Millenium Falcon Arc, Chapter of the Holy Demon War (PS2)
Again, I hate to see Igarashi leave the scene... but I'm glad Nobutoshi Canna will replace him~!
