List of Games Turning Thirty (30) Years Old in 2025
Battle Arena Toshinden (this was the very first 3D fighting game, and paved the way for games like Tekken and SoulCalibur).
Castlevania: Dracula X (a re-release of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood for the SNES).
Chrono Trigger (one of the best games ever made. with a dream team made up of Hironobu Sakaguchi [Final Fantasy], Yuji Horii [Dragon Quest], and Akira Toriyama [Dragon Ball]).
Comix Zone (a pretty fun side scrolling beat 'em up from Sega).
Command & Conquer (the first in the series).
Descent
Destruction Derby
The Dig (a really unique graphic adventure game from LucasArts).
Discworld (based on the setting made by Terry Pratchett).
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation (the last game in the Zenethian trilogy, and the last one to only release in Japan).
Fade to Black (a sequel to Flashback, which is a pioneer in the platformer genre).
Front Mission (the very first one. didn't release in the West until 2007).
Full Throttle (another LucasArts graphic adventure game centered around biker culture.)
Hexen: Beyond Heretic
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
Jagged Alliance (another pioneer in the RTS genre)
Jumping Flash! (one of the very first 3D platformers, pre-dating Super Mario 64).
The King of Fighters '95
Kirby's Dream Land 2
Light Crusader (a really unique and interesting action-adventure fantasy game from the Sega Genesis).
Mario's Picross (is it pronounced "Pie-Cross" or Pih-Cross"?)
Marathon 2: Durandal (one of Bungie's earliest games)
Mega Man 7
Mortal Kombat 3
Panzer Dragoon
Phantasmagoria (yet another LucasArts graphic adventure game, this one centered on a haunted house. It had some pretty gnarly and gruesome death scenes. Look up at your own risk).
The PlayStation (the first one)
Rayman (RIP, Rayman. Ubisoft sucks too much to give you the support you deserve).
Ristar
Romancing SaGa 3
The Sega Saturn (it was supposed to launch in early September on a Saturday, dubbed "Saturnday". However, the PS1 was launching the same week and was $100 cheaper than the Saturn. So... Sega surprised launched the system at the very first E3).
Space Quest 6: Roger Wilco in the Spinal Frontier (the last game in a pretty silly and humorous series of graphic adventure games from Sierra Entertainment).
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dream (also known as Street Fighter Zero. It was a prequel to Street Fighter II and featured younger versions of already existing characters).
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (do you consider this a Mario game or a Yoshi game)
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (the English version of this game wouldn't release until 1998. Three years after the original version).
Tales of Phantasia (the first game in the Tales of series from Namco).
Terranigma (an awesome RPG from Enix that never released in North America)
Twisted Metal
Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness

Annon-Guy: What's your stance on Demo's?
Like there was a demo for Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN (You can play Arcade and Versus, but you can only select Sol and Ky). Unless other Guilty Gear games had demos, that's the first and only time Guilty Gear had a demo, not counting StrIVe's Open Beta's.
In the old days, Demos came as a Disc of multiple mini games packaged with a Game Magazine, and the demos themselves were very arbitrary and random.
Often they were just promotional trailers mixed with a five minute game or an incomplete build with a time limit on it that would kick you back to the title screen once the timer ran out.
Later demos were more generous and were often included packed with a game from the same publisher or developer, like Metal Gear Solid 2 and Zone of the Enders.
As time went on, trailers became more common on YouTube and other Internet venues, and game magazines became whole news sites or just got phased out.
There are now strange hybrid games that are best described as “perpetual beta tests” and some of these games never actually reach a finished state.
Location Tests were usually Arcade Launch events, or just a full demonstration at an EXPO. Arcades are much less prevalent now, replaced by Free-to-Play business models, though even those are somewhat restricted.
Demos are often something of a relic or collection item, because it contains game code that is either no longer used or written differently than the standard patch build of the game, sometimes with more instability and glitches too, or simply having assets the current game no longer uses or needs. To say the least, they provide insight in to the history of a game’s development.
Some Demos even go so far as to act like a sort of Pre Order DLC, letting you transfer your game save from the demo in to the final game with bonuses for doing so.
Some Demos are very exclusive in that they contain a part of the game you can’t experience anywhere else. There are even demos that were never released in public and were exclusive to private software circles among the developers, for their eyes only, as the saying goes…
Most often, demos are hardly a perfect indicator of a game, but they can at least pitch the overall idea of the game to potential fans and newcomers.
Do I like them? Depends on the content, though some older demos are somewhat unforgettable, like Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Final Fantasy VIII, or the demos for Battle Arena Toshinden, Tekken 2, and Bloody Roar.

Sega Saturn - Toh Shin Den URA (Battle Arena Toshinden 2)
Title: Toh Shin Den URA / 闘神伝URA
Developer: Tamsoft / Nextech / Studio Cliche
Publisher: Takara
Release date: 27 September 1996
Catalogue No.: T-10305G
Genre: 3D Fighting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Nextech had re-programmed and released Takara's first Toshinden game for the Saturn, they thought they'd do one better by making a whole new Toshinden game on behalf of Takara for their Saturn fans. So along comes Toshinden URA (Ultimate Revenge Attack). Whilst Toshinden URA looks very nice with hi-rez graphics, big, detailed character models that can fill the screen, and even some transparencies, Nextech forgot one thing. Yes, it was gameplay.
Toshinden URA plays just like every other Toshinden game out there. So, what are the problems? Well, the feeling of contact when you hit someone isn't so good. The characters control as if they are underwater at times and the whole attack system seriously needs to be thought through. This is a real shame because this game has the visuals to impress and enough characters and secrets to keep any fighting fan happy. It's just a shame that Nextech didn't sort out the "underwater" feeling that the game has. It doesn't look like they ever will either. Their follow-up D-Xhird also suffers from the same fate.
So, is it worth buying this game? Well, only if you can find it cheaply. Toshinden URA can be had for buttons in Japan. The European version is not as cheap so you may want to import the Japanese version which should only cost about 100 to 300 yen for a used mint copy. Not too sure if this one was released in the States (someone please let me know).

Battle Arena Toshinden Series - 1995/1996 ⚔️💥👊🕹️🗡️🤺
Battle Arena Toshinden is a 1995 fighting game developed by Tamsoft and published by Takara for the PlayStation. It was one of the first fighting games to feature polygonal characters in a 3D environment and introduced a sidestep manoeuvre that helped define 3D fighting games. Originally developed as a PlayStation exclusive, it was later ported to Sega Saturn (Battle Arena Toshinden Remix), Game Boy,  MS-DOS and Windows.
The game features a large roster by the release of Toshinden 4 but had a group of core reoccurring character over the years with Eiji Shinjo, Kayin Amoh, Sofia, Rungo Iron, Fo Fai, Duke B. Rambert, and Gaia.
While debuting as a console exclusive on the PlayStation in 1995 the series would be ported to the Sega Saturn in 1996 under the title Battle Arena Toshinden Remix. The only other entry in the series to appear on the Sega Saturn would not be a port of the PS1 Battle Arena Toshinden 2 release but would rather be a stand alone release titled Battle Arena Toshinden Ultimate Revenge Attack.
The Toshinden series would see three more releases on the PS1 in 1996 with Battle Arena Toshinden 2, Battle Arena Toshinden 2 plus and spin off title Battle Arena NiToshinden. The series would also make the leap to hand held systems with a release of Battle Arena Toshinden for the Game Boy. #toshinden #playstation #youtubeshorts #shortsvideo #segasaturn #gameboy
