Notes
Dead dove means problematic themes such as non-con, taboo relationships, etc. Kindly DM me first so we can further discuss it
Fanfic commissions may take a long time to finish depending on how lengthy the story is!
Please DM me if you're interested in commissioning me or if you have queries about the commission
I mostly write reader inserts and Genshin Impact. I'm more well-versed in writing for Venti and Nameless Bard, but if I'm familiar with the media and/or characters, I'd be fine writing it.
You can check here what I write and won't write
You have the choice if you prefer to keep the commissioned fanfic for yourself or if it would be alright to post it on my other social platforms
What you see in my carrd is the whole types of fanfic I can do, however, not all of them are open. So if you're wondering why this fanfic commission is not open, it's because it will depend on my availability to ensure I am able to finish the commission

Macrauchenia
(temporal range: 7-0.01 mio. years ago)
[text from the Wikipedia article, see also link above]
Macrauchenia ("long llama", based on the now-invalid llama genus, Auchenia, from Greek "big neck") was a large, long-necked and long-limbed, three-toed native South American ungulate in the order Litopterna.[1] The genus gives its name to its family, the Macraucheniidae or "robust litopterns". Like other litopterns, it is most closely related to the odd-toed ungulates (Perissodactyla), from which litopterns diverged approximately 66 million years ago. The oldest fossils in the genus date to the late Miocene, around seven million years ago, and M. patachonica disappears from the fossil record during the late Pleistocene, around 20,000-10,000 years ago. M. patachonica is one of the last and best known member of the family and is known primarily from the Luján Formation in Argentina, but is known from localities across southern South America. Another genus of macraucheniid Xenorhinotherium was present in northeast Brazil and Venezuela during the Late Pleistocene. The type specimen was discovered by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. In life, Macrauchenia may have resembled a humpless camel, though the two taxa are not closely related.[2] It fed on plants in a variety of environments across what is now South America. Among the species described, M. patachonica and M. ullomensis are considered valid; M. boliviensis is considered a nomen dubium; and M. antiqua (or M. antiquus) has been moved to the genus Promacrauchenia.

In true Dork fashion, I got into an argument with one of my partners about the Universal Translator and xeno-gender. Rants under the cut.
I was explaining to him about the like, 0.01% of people who saw the excerpt from my writing where Kirk asks two six-dimensional creatures their pronouns, one that looks like an hourglass with no other visible features, and the other that looks like some kind of sea worm, and people online were like, "this is an anachronism!"
He replied, "yeah, honestly, having them ask pronouns makes no sense in Star Trek."
And I said to him, "in the context, knowing nothing about their culture, how would you know? How would you know if they have gender, or what the genders are? What social cues would you even look for?"
And he says to me, "the universal translator is the ultimate scripton. In TOS, they never said how it worked. In TNG, the pin they wear translates things directly from their brainwaves."
To which I replied:
Also, if it's brainwaves, why won't it translate French?
The UT comparing brainwaves assumes that other species have brains like ours. They could have hive minds like ants or bees, or they could be intelligent individuals who think with nearly their entire body. And are you telling me that the ship's computer is telepathic?
You do realize that a sentient species similar to an octopus isn't far fetched AT ALL, right? They have 9 'brains' which are spread throughout their body. Where they light up when thinking about sex may be wholly different that what lights up for a human.
Assuming similar brainwaves, you thinking about your concept of femaleness, and the UT shunting through the concept of "she" isn't going to protect you from stepping in it if the person is actually a "he."
Also, why would you assume that every culture has a he or she?
Ants have three genders: queen, worker, and drone. You might argue that works are female, but they cannot become a queen, nor can a queen become a worker, once they are fully developed. They are phenotypically distinct. And how are we to know, if we ran into such a species, how they would think of themselves? Would you automatically know in advance without talking to them? For all you know, their pronouns aren't based on gender at all, but rather upon what job they do in the colony. How would the UT and its hypothetical mind-reading abilities help you to know this without talking to them?
There would be untranslatable pronouns, and you'd have to learn them. Just like the UT doesn't spit out "sword" when a Klingon says the word "bat'leth," or "popcorn" when they're talking about gagh, even though "tasty-finger-food-snack" brainwaves occurs when humans think of popcorn and Klingons think about gagh.
What makes sense is that the U.T. works off of both algorithms and libraries, and that if you meet a new species, you may have to sit in orbit and let your computer absorb a lot of their transmissions before you can go down there and have a conversation.
What makes sense is that people have implants (like the Ferengi do in DS9), and that they somehow do noise cancelling.
Honestly 100% of those Prime Directive stories where humans get modified to blend in, and then use the UT, and no one notices a lip-syncing issue are absolute hogwash.
So yeah, UT is a scripton. A technology with no basis so that we don't have to deal with translation. Even so, I don't know how it would wave away the issue of how to politely address someone without first ascertaining how they think of themself.

Star Trek Episode IMDb Ratings 01/23
It's a new year, with new episodes and new data to play around with, as well as a convenient break in new episode releases. Therefore, my fellow nerds, let us gather 'round for more statistical analyses of Star Trek episode ratings.
I've done this twice before, in July of 2021 and April of 2022. You can look there for a more complete introduction. Basically, I used Python to scrape IMDb data on episode ratings for Star Trek, applied some stats, and am presenting the results.
On the broadest level, the average Star Trek episode is rated 7.36 (SD 0.82, IQR 0.9), continuing a downward trend from previous times. More details under the cut.
Analyzing series by series, Prodigy is keeping its throne as the highest rated series at 7.99, and The Animated Series its much less illustrious title of lowest rated series at 6.56. The greatest standard deviation is still The Next Generation at 0.94, and the lowest is The Animated Series at 0.46, although Prodigy is close behind at 0.48. The average for each series (with standard deviation in parentheses) is below:
TOS: 7.35 (0.80) TAS: 6.56 (0.46) TNG: 7.32 (0.94) DS9: 7.48 (0.78) VOY: 7.32 (0.73) ENT: 7.49 (0.69) DIS: 6.83 (0.86) PIC: 7.12 (0.84) LWD: 7.74 (0.56) PRO: 7.99 (0.48) SNW: 7.90 (0.78)
Compared to last time, the biggest changes are Discovery and Lower Decks each increasing by 0.06, Prodigy increasing by 0.11, and Picard decreasing by 0.25. Of those, only Discovery hasn't had new episodes released since last time, potentially indicating that more positive reviews come later on. Now, I'm not saying that Disco episodes have been the victim of negative review bombing shortly after release, but I'm not not saying it either.
Weighting the averages by number of votes doesn't do much, although Discovery and Picard both get notable increases. The difference between average and weighted average for each show is below:
TOS: +0.10 TAS: +0.03 TNG: +0.10 DS9: +0.06 VOY: +0.05 ENT: +0.01 DIS: +0.21 PIC: +0.17 LWD: -0.06 PRO: -0.12 SNW: -0.03
Breaking things down by season, the average Star Trek show has an average season rating progression of 7.34 - 7.17 - 7.31 - 7.23 - 7.55 - 7.52 - 7.42. The highest rated season is Prodigy's first season at 7.99, and the lowest is Discovery's fourth season at 5.63, an increase from its 5.52 rating last time. Season by season stats for all the shows are below:
TOS: 7.65 - 7.46 - 6.85 TAS: 6.59 - 6.48 TNG: 6.76 - 6.87 - 7.53 - 7.54 - 7.59 - 7.67 - 7.17 DS9: 6.96 - 7.33 - 7.42 - 7.66 - 7.62 - 7.60 - 7.63 VOY: 7.08 - 7.11 - 7.21 - 7.57 - 7.45 - 7.28 - 7.47 ENT: 7.24 - 7.37 - 7.67 - 7.74 DIS: 7.49 - 7.42 - 6.63 - 5.63 PIC: 7.59 - 6.64 LWD: 7.49 - 7.85 - 7.87 PRO: 7.99 SNW: 7.90
The highest and lowest rated episodes of the franchise haven't changed, with "Shades of Gray" at the bottom (3.3, down from 3.4 last time) and "The Inner Light" and "In the Pale Moonlight" sharing the top spot at 9.4. The lowest and highest rated episodes for each series are:
TOS: "And the Children Shall Lead" (5.2), "The City on the Edge of Forever" (9.2) TAS: "The Magicks of Megas-Tu" (5.9), "Yesteryear" (8.0) TNG: "Shades of Gray" (3.3), "The Inner Light" (9.4) DS9: "Let He Who is Without Sin…" (5.5), "In the Pale Moonlight" (9.4) VOY: "The Fight" (5.0), "Blink of an Eye" (9.0) ENT: "These Are the Voyages…" (5.3), "Twilight" (8.6) DIS: "All is Possible" (5.1), "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2" and "If Memory Serves" (8.2) PIC: "Monsters" (5.4), "Nepenthe" (8.3) LWD: "Second Contact" (6.8), "No Small Parts" and "wej Duj" and "First First Contact" and "Hear All, Trust Nothing" (8.7) PRO: "Starstruck" (7.2), "Supernova, Part 1" (8.9) SNW: "The Elysian Kingdom" (6.1), "A Quality of Mercy" (9.1)
Shout out to Lower Decks for having four episodes tie for highest rated.
For each series, relative opinions haven't changed for TOS, TAS, TNG, Voyager, Enterprise, or Picard. DS9's "Meridian" is no longer tied for lowest rated, "If Memory Serves" joins "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2" for the highest rated episodes of Discovery, "No Small Parts" and "Hear All, Trust Nothing" join the highest rated episodes of Lower Decks, and "Supernova, Part 1" takes over from "A Moral Star, Part 2" as the highest rated episode of Prodigy.
The average Star Trek episode receives 2342 votes (SD 1123, IQR 1392). For each series, the average number of votes (standard deviation in parentheses) is:
TOS: 3495 (802) TAS: 678 (103) TNG: 3207 (793) DS9: 1950 (376) VOY: 1772 (277) ENT: 1578 (360) DIS: 3677 (1328) PIC: 3754 (1201) LWD: 941 (34) PRO: 289 (147) SNW: 3475 (638)
The highest is Picard at 3754, and Discovery has the greatest standard deviation at 1328. The lowest is Prodigy at 289, and Lower Decks has the lowest standard deviation at 34.
I think the biggest conclusion here is that more of y'all should be watching Prodigy! It's the least popular based on votes, yet the highest rated series.

Here's some information that might help you as you decide how to support creators, whether it's Twitch streamers, YouTubers, podcasters, bloggers, etc.
Twitch subscriptions and YouTube Memberships take a huge cut of the money given. Twitch takes 50% and YouTube takes 30%.
Twitch streamers get 100% of the money from bits at a rate of $0.01 per bit. This is why 100 bits cost $1.30, Amazon is charging you $0.30 to give a streamer a buck.
YouTube takes a 30% cut of all Superchat donations during live streams.
Patreon takes a 5% cut plus payment processing fees (which ends up around 8-10% total). Creators can opt to pay more to get additional features, but that's on them if they do so.
Donations made through Streamlabs, Stream Elements, and similar platforms only take a tiny percentage of the donation equal to the card transaction fee (this is the same as any other online transaction and is typically around 3-5%).
If you're paying in a different currency than the creator uses (for example, donating in Euros when the creator is American), there is no exchange rate charge with Twitch Subscriptions or Bits or with YouTube Memberships or Superchats, but other donations like Streamlabs, Stream Elements, PayPal, Ko-Fi, etc. charges an additional 2-3% fee for currency exchange on top of other fees.
Don't feel weird if you can only donate a small amount. Sure, some creators may have Patreon levels up to $50/mo or more and some get donations of $100 or more regularly, but I promise you that even your $1/mo Patreon support or $5 donation helps because that can add up fast.
DO NOT GET CUTE WITH THE MEMO LINE. If you pay a creator via PayPal, Ko-Fi, Streamlabs, Stream Elements, Venmo, or any other online transaction service, do NOT put anything in the memo line. These are monitored by algorithms set to detect violations of the Terms of Service and if you decide to get cheeky and put something that even HINTS that the creator is a sex worker, selling marijuana or accessories for marijuana, or anything else that violates ToS, there is a good chance their account will be closed, they will lose any money they haven't withdrawn yet, and there is no appeals process.
Many creators have affiliate accounts. If you're looking for a service like meal delivery, VPN, audio books, etc. you already know about "Use my code for a discount". Also, if you're going to buy a product from Amazon, DriveThruRPG, Itch.io, GOG, Epic, or other online stores, many of these also have affiliate programs and many creators use them. Check for links to anything on the About page, blog posts, etc. from those creators and click on them regardless of what the product is, then order whatever it is you want to order. The price is the same for you and the creator gets a small percentage of it ranging from 1% to 10% of the price. For example, I write a column on tabletop roleplaying games. If I link to the D&D Player's Handbook in my column and you click on it then go buy some cat food and a new USB thumb drive, I will still get a small percentage of what Amazon makes off the sale even if you didn't buy the D&D book. You have to have cookies enabled for this to work, and the cookie lasts typically from 24 to 72 hours depending on the site.
If you're broke and still want to support, the whole "like, comment, and subscribe" thing is CRITICAL. Algorithms suck and are getting worse every day, and engagement is one of the best ways to help a creator out. You don't need say anything witty or even interesting, just hit the like button and say something like "Loved this" or "Good job" or "Thanks this helped a lot" not only is nice to hear as a creator, but drives the video, podcast, blog post, etc. up in the algorithm rankings and makes it more likely to be seen by others.
If you listen to a podcast, give them a 5-star review on iTunes. This also helps with algorithm ranking and makes them easier to find in searches. Do NOT and I repeat do NOT give anything less than 5-stars (or whatever the top level of ranking is). A 4-star review is weighted the same as a 1-star review in the algorithm. Again, doesn't need to be a grand epic critique, just click 5 stars and say "Love the show", that's all you need to do. Try to use iTunes if you can (most podcatcher apps and other services just yoink the data off iTunes), but if you don't have an account, leave the review on whatever app or site you use.
For Twitch streams, make clips of funny or interesting moments. Clips help out the creator in making "sizzle reels" of their content, can be easily translated into videos for other social media platforms like TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube Shorts, etc. Clips also help with search results so more people can find the streamer on Twitch, but not quite as much as it did a few years ago.
Share links to people you think would like them. Don't go spamming them or violating the rules of any Discord servers or Facebook Groups or subreddits or anything, but if you can, post a link to whatever you're watching that you find interesting and think people in that community would also be interested in.
Basically, do anything you can within reason to send more people to view a creator's work. Audience attrition can be a real problem as The Algorithm™ changes and platforms decide to push different types of content, so it can be difficult to keep up with while still making the sort of content they want to make. Even creators with a large following may fall victim to this as fans eventually leave. Their interests change, they get burned out on a specific type of video/stream/podcast, they don't have as much free time anymore, and many other legitimate reasons audiences slowly evaporate. For creators, this can sometimes feel like sprinting on a treadmill - a whole lot of work and energy burned and you're exhausted only to end up precisely where you started. Spreading the word to others helps a lot.
Finally...leave a kind word. Tell the creator how much you enjoy what they do. We're all very, very tired and someone giving us a nice, simple "Good job" can mean a hell of a lot.
For the record, im pretty sure I speak for 90% of twitch streamlettes when I say: always use an ad blocker. No matter what.
Like, you’re not stealing from the creator if you do. Unless a streamer is Jerma Sized, ads will provide about five cents a month; twitch has routinely attempted to push ads with “incentive programs” that go nowhere and alienate audiences.
If you want to support a creator, find out where they can be supported- a single 5 dollar donation when you can afford it will literally do more for them than anything twitch or YouTube “provides” via ads ✅

Commissions are Open again!
Hello everyone! That hiatus ended up being much longer than I thought, but finally my hand is out of a splint and I can continue writing! I've updated both my Rules/TOS and my pricing, so please take a look at those if you're interested. I've also added and removed fandoms from the list of what I work with, so double check that as well!
I'm running a return sale for the next two weeks (9/7-9/21)!! During this time, pricing will be $0.01 USD per word, so it's a great time to put in a request! I ended up racking up quite a few hospital bills trying to get my hand fixed, so these comms will go towards helping me pay those off.
As always, message me for more details if interested!

Opening Up Writing Commissions! Including Lair Reviews!
Here's the thread on FR
Commission details from the thread:
Like everyone else, I am in dire need of some copies of the new koi gene, so I'm going to open up writing commissions! I am a published poet and an avid story writer, and I even write essays or maybe even colorful lair reviews! I'll write about basically anything within FR's TOS, and it doesn't even have to be about dragons or FR! Examples: You can find examples of my work here: Short Stories: - Two - Boots of Lakeview Intersection - Skin Under Stone Poetry: - Train Yard Tale - God Saw Hell in Me - Tenacity of Evergreens You can also take a look at my lair for examples of my writing! Not all of the dragons have lore written, but some do! The first dragon of each tab has lore right now. If you want an example of lore writing I've done for others, look here! If you want examples of published work, either ping me or dm me! It's a little scattered, but here's a link to an online publication of mine! For lair reviews, I'll be posting those on my FR tumblr! Pricing: I'll take either gems or treasure at a 1g:1000t exchange, though gems are preferred. I will accept koi genes as payment, too! worth 1200g of writing! Additionally, I will accept payment in usd at the rate of 1g:$0.01. I'll DM you my paypal info if you choose to do that. Short Stories/Lore Writing: - 1g/1kt per word - 50g/50kt minimum, but I'll write less than 50 words if you want - Orders totaling up to 200g/200kt will be paid upfront, anything over that I will ask for half upfront Poetry: - 20g/20kt per line - 60g/60kt minimum, but I'll write less than 3 lines if you want - Orders totaling up to 200g/200kt will be paid upfront, anything over that I will ask for half upfront Lair Reviews: - Simple Reviews: 10g/10kt per dragon. I'll tell you what I love about your dragons! And I love dragons so much. These will generally be about a paragraph or so. - Fancy Reviews: 25g+/25kt+ per dragon. I'll go into great detail about your dragon! The more you pay, the more I'll say! I may even wax poetical, who knows! At base, these will probably be 2 or 3 times longer than simple reviews, and I'll write them in a special style if you want! If there's any other writing you want that you don't see here, just lemme know and we'll see what I can work out. At the end of the day, I reserve the right to refuse any request at my discretion. Right now, I'm opening two slots for each stories/lore, poetry, and lair reviews, at a maximum of 5000 words for short stories, 50 lines for poetry, or 25 dragons per slot. The next post will show open slots. If I happen to fill up, I'll be happy to add you to a ping list for my next opening!

Hey guys! Spirk fan here. I've been trying to look for this specific fic and I was wondering if anyone could help me out!
From what I remember:
-It's Valentine's Day
-Scotty had created some kind of matchmaking system
-Sent the results to everybody on their PADDs
-There was a marginalized error of 0.01% (I think)
-Kirk and Spock were the top couple of the Enterprise with like 99.99% compatibility and Spock wants to date Kirk
-"Are you telling me you want to date me because.. The math adds up?"
-The two then become a legit couple
-Additional couples that were in the results: Chekov x Sulu, Kirk x McCoy, Scotty x Uhura? And a few others
And two results that were anamolies: Scotty x Enterprise, (AOS) Kirk x (TOS) Kirk (I'm pretty sure that was one of the results, lol)
-Also, Scotty asks Spock if he can date Uhura and Spock says something like "I don't own Uhura and she is free to date whoever she chooses."
That's about as much as I can remember. It was posted on LiveJournal, I believe. It's been awhile since I've read it, but it's something I hope I can find again with anyone's help!

You didnt ask but re: fanfic commissions-
The market for them is more limited than fanart for sure. And if you do them, they have to be done more quietly than fanart.
1) If you use AO3, do not mention anywhere on it that you're doing commissions. (This actually goes for if you post fanart or other fanworks to AO3 too.) Do not link to a payment site like Kofi or PayPal. It will probably go unnoticed if you do, but it opens the site up to legal liabilities and is therefore strictly against their ToS.
2) How open you are about advertising fanfic commissions is writer discretion. One way of talking around it is to say you do writing commissions or story commissions, inquire for more details, without ever explicitly mentioning fanfic.
3) A general opening price is $0.01 per word, or $1 every hundred words. Professionals definitely charge more than that, and it's completely at the writer's discretion. Because fanfic doesn't have as active of a market as fanart, there isn't much competition--but there also isn't much demand. Don't sell yourself short by going any lower than $0.01 per word.
Do you take fanfic requests or ideas?
YESS Id love to hear both Art and Fanfic requests as long as it is understood that I might not complete them since they are requests and not commissions✨😚

Adenil’s Writing Commissions!
Hi! Through a series of events including no work over summer, a late paycheck, and an unexpected $500 vet bill I’m super broke and worried about paying rent and buying food and all that fun stuff under #capitalism.
So, I’ve decided to open up writing commissions. I write fanfic for a number of fandoms, and also original fiction. You can check out some of my work on AO3 or under my adenil-writes tag here on tumblr.
I write for the following fandoms:
Star Trek TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9, and ENT. Sorry I can’t write for DISCO right now!
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Good Omens (please! I love these nerds and want to write more about them!!)
M*A*S*H
Original fiction on a theme of your choosing
I write science fiction and queer stuff, and I LOVE having prompts for my short story writing. I’m also happy to write gift fic for people. I will write any genre, including NSFW stories. I’m generally okay with any kinks and with dark fic, so feel free to ask and I’ll see what I can do.
Price points:
$0.01 per word, so about $10 for 1,000 words (for comparison, “professional” rates are usually 8 cents a word—so this a big savings to you)
I will give you an estimate on length based on your prompt
Pay half (of the estimate) up front
Other half upon delivery of the story
If you wish to purchase a private fic (e.g. something that will not be posted to my AO3) the price is $0.02 per word, so about $20 for 1,000 words
I have five commission spots open, and they are first come first serve! Send me an email at danmichaelfielding [at] gmail [dot] com.
If you’d like to help but don’t want to commission a story I also appreciate people buying me a tea on Ko-Fi.
If you can’t order a commission right now I’d still really appreciate it if you could reblog this post. Thanks and big hugs to you all!

16/30 Star Trek TOS S1
10% of the plots that occupies 90% of my brain energy here... can anything be gayer than THIS???!!! 🤯:
Kirk: ahhh...
Spock: what’s the matter, Captain? (maybe he’s just asking...just asking...
Kirk: backache
Spock does nothing, but the Yeoman helps.
Kirk: yeah...yes...push! Ah...push harder! Thanks, Mr. Spo...
Spock silently walks to the side of Captain’s seat.
Kirk notices Spock, realizing the situation. (and probably frantically deducing and trying to choose a next move within 0.01 second
Kirk: ......that should be enough, Yeoman. (he almost sounds like his mood was just being ruined??????????
Spock and Kirk silently (yet both not really silent in their minds) glance at each other simultaneously. (...wHAT aRE yOU fELLAS tHINKING??? like so subtle i m so toasted. can i suggest to the Yeoman lady that maybe she could try to smash their heads together im joking : ) but yeah, here is my shot: Kirk looks a bit embarrassed and unsatisfied but really cant say anything loud cuz it would be too much in that context and Spock seems know everything yet has no intention to answer/comply to what Kirk needs and he freaking feels nO rEGRET -- such a man! he’s too cool for school. im so done lol
My brain just cyber-linked to the explicit ver. AO3, wait no, actually, i don’t need it, it’s happening literally in the front of me. omg.

Star Trek Episode IMDb Ratings 04/22
Okay, nerds, come gather ‘round for some statistical analysis of Star Trek episode ratings - again.
Along with being the website where you go to check and see if you really did recognize that actor, IMDb has a rating system for individual episodes, often with reasonable numbers of individual reviews for each episode. While largely a popularity contest, they do provide some indication of overall fan opinion of episodes. With hundreds of episodes to look at, and generally at least a half dozen ratings per episode, there’s a good amount of data to look at and analyze.
Just note that these numbers are basically useless at telling whether or not any show, season, or episode is actually any good or not; the only thing they show is the opinions of people who spent the time and effort to push some buttons on IMDb. And even then, it’s only on an episode by episode basis, so any connections between episodes that help or hurt the story as a whole are not at all counted.
I wrote a Python script to scrape info, then ran some simple statistics and graphed the results. All is below the read more.
The average Star Trek episode had a rating of 7.4 (mean and median, SD 0.82, IQR 1.1). Compared to last time, there is a slight decrease in mean and median. Star Trek: Enterprise has been knocked from its throne of the highest rated show, with the title now going to Star Trek: Prodigy at 7.88. Star Trek: The Animated Show maintains its much less illustrious title of lowest rank show, at 6.59. The means for all of the series (standard deviation in parentheses) are as follows:
TOS: 7.36 (0.80)
TAS: 6.59 (0.45)
TNG: 7.33 (0.93)
DS9: 7.49 (0.77)
VOY: 7.34 (0.72)
ENT: 7.50 (0.69)
DIS: 6.77 (0.90)
PIC: 7.37 (0.66)
LWD: 7.68 (0.62)
PRO: 7.88 (0.50)
[Image description: A bar graph of the above numbers]
Some speak of the 'quality curve' of Star Trek shows, wherein they start at their worst early one, reach a peak mid to late seasons, and a slight decrease at the end. And based on IMDb ratings, it's a legit thing. The average means by season are 7.2 - 7.3 - 7.3 - 7.4 - 7.6 - 7.5 - 7.4. The highest rated season is the second of Star Trek: Lower Decks at 7.91 and the lowest is the fourth of Star Trek: Discovery at 5.52. Season by season stats for the shows are as follows:
TOS: 7.66, 7.47, 6.86
TAS: 6.61, 6.53
TNG: 6.76, 6.88, 7.54, 7.55, 7.60, 7.69, 7.20
DS9: 6.97, 7.33, 7.43, 7.68, 7.64, 7.60, 7.66
VOY: 7.09, 7.13, 7.23, 7.60, 7.45, 7.30, 7.48
ENT: 7.24, 7.37, 7.68, 7.75
DIS: 7.46, 7.39, 6.57, 5.52
PIC: 7.56, 7.39
LWD: 7.45, 7.91
PRO: 7.88
[Image description: A graph of the above numbers]
Using the scraper to collect the number of ratings allows allows for calculating weighted averages (episodes with more ratings count more towards the calculated average). They are as follows, with the difference between the weighted and standard average in parenthesis:
TOS: 7.45 (0.09)
TAS: 6.62 (0.03)
TNG: 7.43 (0.10)
DS9: 7.55 (0.06)
VOY: 7.39 (0.05)
ENT: 7.51 (0.01)
DIS: 7.02 (0.25)
PIC: 7.62 (0.25)
LWD: 7.60 (-0.08)
PRO: 7.81 (-0.07)
Graphing everything out, with a moving average regression, yields:
[Image description: The graph has a y-axis of 0 to 10, representing average rating, and an x-axis of episode number, with six vertical lines dividing different seasons. There are multicolored dots with different colors representing the different series, largely gathered around 7.5 on the y-axis. Faint lines follow the general trend of dots in the corresponding color, with a lot of small up and down movement. Several episodes located unusually high or low are highlighted.]
"Shades of Gray" retains its title as by far the lowest rated episode at 3.4. "The Inner Light" and "In the Pale Moonlight" are still tied for the highest rated episode, at 9.4. The lowest and highest rated episodes for each series are:
TOS: "And the Children Shall Lead" (5.2), "City on the Edge of Forever" (9.2)
TAS: "The Magicks of Megas-Tu" (5.9), "Yesteryear" (8.0)
TNG: "Shades of Gray" (3.4), "The Inner Light" (9.4)
DS9: "Meridian" and "Let He Who Is Without Sin..." (5.6), "In the Pale Moonlight" (9.4)
VOY: "The Fight" (5.0), "Blink of an Eye" (9.0)
ENT: "These Are the Voyages..." (5.3), "Twilight" (8.7)
DIS: "All Is Possible" (4.9), "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2" (8.2)
PIC: "Monsters" (5.3), "Nepenthe" (8.3)
LWD: "Second Contact" (6.7), "wej Duj" and "First First Contact" (8.8)
PRO: "Starstruck" (7.2), "A Moral Star, Part 2" (8.7)
I also graphed rating by number of reviews. I was expecting episodes with a greater number of reviews to have either very high or very low ratings (people with strong opinions, good or bad, are more likely to give reviews). Turns out, greater number of reviews are actually related simply to high ratings, although the association isn't very strong.
[Image description: A scatter chart with a linear regression. The data points are mostly random, with some clumps.]
It can also be split by show, where to me the more interesting thing is the clumps for each show:
[Image description: The same scatter chart as above, but color coded by show. The Animated Series, Lower Decks, and Prodigy are clumped at the left end with low numbers of ratings, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise clumped together a bit to the right of that, and The Original Series, The Next Generation, Discovery, and Picard being scattered further right than that.]
I'll just copy my commentary from last time, since it still stands:
Moving from the factual numerical data into some opinion, I find the decrease in average ratings for Discovery odd as from the little that I’ve seen, people seem to think that Discovery is only getting better. I think that some of the average ratings definitely got things right, and others most definitely did not. I expect most people will have a similar opinion, although which episodes they think fall into which category will almost certainly differ. These data also show TAS and PIC as being the most consistent shows and TNG as the most variable in terms of quality, which seems fairly accurate. TNG gives us the highest standard deviation, the lowest rated episode, and the highest rated episode - the definition of high highs and low lows.
The newest season of Discovery's ratings are absolutely criminal though, at least in my opinion. On a different note, I find the giant dip in Enterprise's ratings average at the end highly amusing, since it's all because of "These Are the Voyages..."
If anyone's curious about the scraping program or raw data, contact me.
#Star Trek#Trekking across the universe#statistics#analysis#Later I might look into whether the first or second half of two-part episodes is rated higher on average#since I'm noticing a lot of 'part 2's on the highest rated episodes list#Tricorder log

I'm literally not disputing it being a tool in my response? Nor am I suggesting that banning it altogether is the solution. AI is here and turning our backs on it out of fear will not help us. That doesn't mean I don't get to be decidedly skeptical of its current use.
Just like with gun-control, regulation is part of the solution, but unfortunately we're already kinda beyond that being anything but a bandaid slapped onto a gaping wound. The biggest visual datasets have already been trained on our art. The internet has already been scraped and continues to be scraped as we speak, because certain social medias are expanding their TOS to include AI content use.
I'm not blaming the tool. I am blaming corporate greed and shortsightedness. But I'm also not excited or positively inclined towards a tool that is currently being developed using illegal practices. Using it can be done ethically if you modify its source material, but 9 times out of 10 that is not what is happening. If a tool is doing 99.9% harm and 0.01% good, you might consider if that tool was a good idea to begin with.
I'm sorry, but telling artists to somehow look beyond the unregulated use of their copyrighted material and the usurping of their labor because "it's just a tool! if we just regulate it, it can be a major help!" strikes me as naive at best and disrespectful at worst. And that might not be your opinion at heart, but that's all I hear when people use that argument.
I'm gonna assume that tumblr is no longer enforcing the nudity ban considering how much straight up full frontal coochie is in the search for 'ai art' now. I wanted to see discussions on the topic and instead I got flashed by art thieving hoes. thanks.
#I was hesitant to even touch on the whole gun control issue here#bc yikes that is.#that sure is a comparison#ai art#long post#ai
