Follow Up To My Previous Post Regarding The Deplorable Treatment I received At The Toronto Western Hospital
As you can read in my blog, “The Deplorable Way I Was Treated By Toronto’s The University Health Network“, which I published on November 22, 2023, I was in my opinion treated very unprofessional and cruel by all the staff in the ER of Toronto Western. I am not one who will just run away with my tail between my legs and let matters of concern left undealt with. This is the response I received…

On December 27th 1904 J M Barrie's play "Peter Pan" premiered at the Duke of York Theatre, London.
J.M. Barrie created his character based on his older brother, David, who died in an ice-skating accident the day before his 14th birthday. His mother and brother thought of him as forever a boy. The "boy who wouldn't grow up"
The story of free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood having adventures on the mythical island of Neverland as the leader of the Lost Boys, interacting with fairies, pirates, mermaids, Native Americans, and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside Neverland.
Peter Pan has become a cultural icon symbolizing youthful innocence and escapism. In addition to two distinct works by Barrie, the character has been featured in a variety of media and merchandise, both adapting and expanding on Barrie's works. These include a 1953 animated film, a 2003 dramatic/live-action film, a television series and many other works.
J. M. Barrie first used Peter Pan 2 years before, as a character in a section of The Little White Bird, an adult novel where he appears as a seven-day-old baby in the chapter entitled Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Following the success of the 1904 play, Barrie's publishers, Hodder and Stoughton, extracted chapters 13–18 of The Little White Bird and republished them in 1906 under the title Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with the addition of illustrations by Arthur Rackham.
Barrie never described Peter's appearance in detail, even in his novel, leaving it to the imagination of the reader and the interpretation of anyone adapting the character. In the play, Peter's outfit is made of autumn leaves and cobwebs. His name and playing the flute or pipes suggest the mythological character Pan. Barrie mentions in Peter and Wendy that Peter Pan still had all his "first teeth".He describes him as a beautiful boy with a beautiful smile, "clad in skeleton leaves and the juices that flow from trees"
Traditionally, the character has been played on stage by a petite adult woman. In the original productions in the UK, Peter Pan's costume was a reddish tunic and dark green tights, such as that worn by Nina Boucicault in 1904. This costume is exhibited in Barrie's Birthplace museum at Kirriemuir.
In the Disney films, Peter wears an outfit that consists of a short-sleeved green tunic and tights apparently made of cloth, and a cap with a red feather in it. He has pointed elf-like ears, brown eyes and his hair is red. In Hook , the character is played as an adult by Robin Williams, with blue eyes and dark brown hair; in flashbacks to him in his youth, his hair is light brown. In this film his ears appear pointed only when he is Peter Pan, not as Peter Banning. His Pan attire resembles the Disney outfit (minus the cap). In the live-action 2003 Peter Pan film, he is portrayed by Jeremy Sumpter, who has blond hair and blue-green eyes. His outfit is made of leaves and vines.
Barrie commissioned a statue of Peter Pan by sculptor George Frampton which was erected overnight in Kensington Gardens on 30 April 1912 as a May Day surprise to the children of London. Seven statues have been cast from the original mould, they are in, Egmont Park, Brussels, Belgium, Bowring Park, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, Bowring Park, Johnson Park, Camden, New Jersey, USA, Queens Gardens, Perth, Western Australia, Sefton Park, Liverpool, and Glenn Gould Park, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Various other statues have appeared around the world, including three in Scotland, the first is at Mearnskirk Hospital for children in Glasgow, the first superintendent of the hospital, Dr John A Wilson, was a school friend of Barrie, the other one in Scotland is of course in Kirriemuir, one in the main town square and the other in the Peter Pan Garden by Barrie's Birthplace, now owned by the National Trust of Scotland.
The most famous of the other statues is at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, who JM Barrie gifted the rights to the play in 1929, the copyright first expired in the UK (and the rest of Europe) in 1987, 50 years after Barrie’s death, but the government of the day made an amendment to the copyright act giving Great Ormond Street Hospital the unique right to royalties from stage performances of Peter Pan (and any adaptation of the play) as well as from publications, audio books, ebooks, radio broadcasts and films of the story of Peter Pan, in perpetuity.

The new agreement will soon be enshrined into BC law, naming the Haida as the rightful owners of all 200-plus islands of Haida Gwaii, which they have been stewarding for millennia. After a two-year transition period, the Haida Nation will manage the 98 percent of its archipelago that was formerly considered Crown land, including protected areas and other forested lands. Having more of a say over the logging industry—which has clear-cut over two-thirds of the islands’ old-growth forest since 1950—has been a focus of the Haida’s title fight since the very beginning. The agreement won’t affect private property or municipal and provincial services, from highways to hospitals, which will continue to be regulated by the province. “The idea that each legal system is recognizing the other one is a turning point,” Borrows [a member of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation and an expert in Indigenous law at the University of Toronto] says. “It’s also radically democratic and participatory.” This marks a new kind of relationship, which can draw on the best of Haida and Western influences, he adds. And unlike a treaty or court decision, which are more set in stone, this approach requires ongoing negotiation that can adapt and evolve with the times. “It can keep people at the table, learning and working together with one another and trying to find that path to mutuality,” Borrows says.

Having recently spent a few weeks in Poland and Estonia, I formed the impression that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has transformed neighbouring countries in ways that US and western governments completely fail to grasp. Two years of war have radically reshaped expectations.
From the Estonian colleague who calmly told me there will be a Russia-Nato war in the next few years in which Estonia will be partially or completely destroyed, to the Polish mother who no -longer wants her son to pursue a military career--people are drawing conclusions.
They are concluding that Nato is feckless and cannot or will not deter Russia. They are questioning whether their own institutions, and allies, are up to the challenges confronting them. And they are factoring likelihood of war into their own life plans in ways that shocked me.
I mention this because the US and Nato seem to assume that as long as the invasion of Ukraine is contained to Ukraine, and Russia is not actively invading other regional countries, whatever happens in Ukraine (such as the destruction of a children's hospital) stays in Ukraine.
Washington, Brussels, and Berlin have all the time in the world to manage the invasion. If it is eventually resolved to their satisfaction, what happened in the interim--the death and destruction, the blighted lives and hopes--won't matter to much to anyone except Ukraine. They are sadly mistaken. Yes, Ukraine and its people are bearing the brunt of Russia's invasion of Europe. But even if the invasion should end tomorrow, the reputational damage to Nato (and I daresay the EU) has been huge. They have been exposed as inept and compromised. Do Biden, Scholz, et al. think that allowing Russia to ravage Ukraine with impunity will work out well for the Euro-Atlantic institutions that undergird their own power and prestige? People in CEE countries see their supposed allies allowing neighbour Ukraine to be annihilated. People in CEE countries are not fools or passive victims. They see what is being allowed to happen to their neighbour and update their own views accordingly. This is one reason (among many) why the delay in achieving Ukrainian victory is so damaging to the collective West. It's already too late for honour or conscience, but self-interest alone should lead us in the West to help Ukraine expel Russia from its territory sooner rather than later. The credibility of our alliances is ebbing away. Ukraine must win soon to salvage what's left of it.

can you explain what "oh let's humanize them", the comment in the twitter screenshot you shared, about sexual violence in Ukraine, means? I don't qute understand the context
That comment was left by a Ukrainian twitter user and I think it's a reference to the new "documentary" film Russians at War, which is made by a Russian-Canadian director with the purpose of portraying Russia as the victim and the Russian army as justified in its invasion of Ukraine. The movie was paid by North American organizations that justify Russia's imperialism and military occupation of Ukraine as well as by Canadian tax money. It received 340,000 Canadian dollars from the Government of Canada and is being shown as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. It also premiered in the Venice Biennale festival. (Who said that Western Europe has cut cultural relations with Russia?)
The Russian army is committing multiple war crimes against the Ukrainian population in a war fuelled by Russian imperialism. The Russian occupation destroys homes, villages, schools, hospitals, civilian infrastructure, it kills in bombings and in extrajudicial killings, they rape and torture and execute in the most humiliating ways they find. Everything is documented, yet it seems like the world wants to look in a different direction and pretend nothing is happening there.
The director of the Russians at War movie, who filmed it by living with the army for 7 months (including entering Ukrainian territory with the army, which is an international crime and goes against Ukrainian sovereignty), said that the Russian army does not commit war crimes and that it's a Western media invention, and that the soldiers they met are "absolutely ordinary guys" and that the purpose of the movie is to show the "human side" of the war (only the Russian side is included in that sentence, though).

"FRESH AIR, WORK AND PLAY USHERS HEALTH BACK FOR CONVALESCING SOLDIERS," Toronto Star. September 29, 1943. Page 8. ---- ON THEIR 22-ACRE FARM, convalescing soldiers at the Oakville Casualty retraining centre grow much of their own fruit and vegetables, as well as provide produce for Chorley Park hospital at Toronto and the military hospital at Hamilten. Pte. Bill Rad ford. Hamilton, displaying a branch of juicy grapes here, says the vineyard is a favorite wurking spot for him and his chuma,
IT'S HARVEST TIME NOW on the casualty retraining centre's hospital farm. Major LG Brayley, OC states that the farm work is one of the finest forms of exercise for the convalescing soldiers and is enjoyed by the youths, Sapper Alf Dormer, lslington, left, and Pte. Ran Pyle. Dunnville, admire some of the squash which they have tended since summer
"OFFICIAL" TEAMSTER for the centre's farm is Private Gordon Bell, Orillia, who fell heir to the teamster's job because he has spent most of his life on a farm in western Canada. Two horses, as well as plows, disks, harrows and other implements are a part of the centre's equipment. Private Bell is disking down the mid after his fellow convalescents had harvested a bumper crop of potatoes.
WORK, PLAY, EXERCISE all stop when the time comes for mail parade. And when the sergeant repeats those fateful words: "That's all this morning boys," the soldiers move off reluctantly. The Oakville Casualty Retraining Centre for soldiers past the need of hospital care is the fist of its type in Canada. Fresh air, sunshine and good food restore the health to youths recovering from operations and illness.

On September 6th 1876, the Scottish physician and physiologist John James Macleod was born at Clunie near Dunkeld.
John James Rickard Macleod was the son of the local church minister, the Rev Robert Macleod. He studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen and graduated in 1898. He then spent a year at the University of Leipzig. In 1899 he became a demonstrator of physiology at the London Hospital Medical School, and three years later he was appointed a Lecturer in Biochemistry there. In 1903 he was appointed Professor of Physiology at the Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio. He spent some of 1916 as Professor of Physiology at McGill University in Montreal and then, in 1918, accepted the post of Professor of Physiology at the University of Toronto in Canada.
Macleod’s research focused on carbohydrate metabolism and resulted in the discovery that insulin could be used to treat diabetes. This led to his sharing the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1923. At the time there was controversy about whose work really led to the discovery of insulin, and there remains some suspicion that Macleod’s co-awardee tried to write him out of the history books by claiming his role was less than accepted at the time. The fact remains that Macleod was awarded a share in the prize.
In 1928 John Macleod accepted the post of Regius Professor of Physiology at the University of Aberdeen. He continued to hold the post, together with that of Consultant Physiologist to the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health, part of the University until his death in March 1935.

I learned recently (I'm a white Canadian in Toronto, almost 40 yo) that the likely death rate of residential schools reached something like fifty percent in the first several decades of their operation. FIFTY PERCENT.
The way I was taught about indigenous peoples in Canada were a few scattered history modules that not only massively simplified the complexities of the different groups, but presented them as historical curiosities. Basically, Inuit in grade three (hey they lived in the Arctic! Snow! Igloos! The French word for seal is phoque!), *All plains tribes* in grade 7 (long houses! Three sisters! Not even anything about the Iroquois Confederacy), I think we had a west coast Haida/Salish section in grade 8 (potlatch! Totem poles, a very quick summation of the Christian missions to destroy the potlatch system). That was literally it. Oh wait, we talked about Louis Riel and the MĂ©tis a tiny bit at one point, mostly just to point out he was "crazy"...
Nothing about residential schools, nothing about building Canada on the forced relocation, marginalization, assimilation, and outright genocide of the vibrant and varied groups that lived here before European invasion.
People like to say "get over it, it was so long ago"
They can't get over it, the last residential and day schools were closed in the 90s. THE FUCKING 90s. They are constantly being retraumatized, the racism they face daily, the ramifications of generations of kids being taken from their homes and made to learn English (or french in Quebec), kept far from their families, sold off to strangers in the 60s scoop, abused, beaten, used for scientific studies without their knowledge or consent, groups forced to relocate far away from the land they knew (since we wanted that for ourselves) to places we didn't think worthwhile. Forced to deal with companies wanting those lands for resource extraction once they determined something valuable was actually there. Made to live like us in places not built to support western-style housing (why are there regular fucking houses in the goddamn arctic ffs), given little to no access to things like electricity, internet, grocery stores, hospitals. If they're in any of the larger cities, they're seen as a problem to solve, since a lot of urban indigenous people experience unstable housing and of course we criminalize unhoused people cause fucking capitalism. We paint them with alcoholism stereotypes, ignoring that WE FUCKING INTRODUCED THEIR ANCESTORS TO ALCOHOL TO HELP CONTROL POPULATIONS AND FORCE THEIR HANDS TO SIGN TREATIES TO OUR FUCKING BENEFIT CREATING EPIGENETIC RAMIFICATIONS THAT LAST STILL TODAY
I am only barely scraping the surface of Canada's history with the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island.
We need to do better. We need to be better.
Hey remember when they found over 200 bodies of native children buried behind a residential school and the world cared for... what, a week?
They've counted about 6,000-7,000 now, for those of you who do still care

the fucking synagogue protests right now are because ANNEXED LAND IS BEING SOLD AT THEM TO WESTERNERS. Are you really only hearing the reactions to the protests and not actually hearing ANYTHING from the organizers? They are not opposed to synagogues. They are opposed to the sale of violently annexed settled land to the highest bidder. Either get out of your bubble or keep being just a timothee chalamet stan blog
Oh I’ve heard plenty from those protests, they are protesting not only at synagogues, but at hospitals with jewish heritage and in Jewish neighbourhoods. This has been happening for months, it didn’t start a couple days ago. But in the most recent ones I’ve seen people in Toronto asking Jewish people “to go back to Europe” people in Montreal calling for the death of the Jews. I’ve seen how rampant hate has become the currency to supposedly bring justice, and how it became a tradition to harass people of a very specific community. So no, I do not agree with them and I will keep saying that in my blog all the time.
