ooh the hanbok!!!!! i love when kpop songs incorporate traditional korean elements, whether it's though clothing or traditional instruments. the song was cute and catchy as well, it's probably not something i'd listen to all the time but i'd definitely play it once in a blue moon when i want a cute, chill song to listen to! also was there lowkey a lesbian moment in the mv or do i just have yuri goggles on? either way loved the mv!
send me a kpop release from the last year and i'll listen to it if i haven't already and tell you what i think! (see rules)

This song was just randomly stuck in my head today. I thought Topp Dogg was so cool and unique when I first saw this video.

Hello! I was wondering if you had any favorite cheap kpop mvs? Ones like gr8u where they used an intresting trick or idea to make the mv stand out despite the lack of budget.
HI HELLO AGAIN THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE QUESTION THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
okay okay okay. so there's a bit of a scale i'm gonna operate on here, because there's some pretty large gaps in between what i would consider 'cheap' for specific groups vs like, actual monetary cost and access to resources and stuff like that. i've separated these out into a couple of categories, because i could and to make some more distinctions. i'm judging a lot of this based on expense in terms of set, because that's generally where you're going to sink the most cost. if you want custom sets of any kind you have to have 1) the space to put the sets (a studio/warehouse), 2) the people to design the sets, 3) the materials to make the sets, and 4) the people to build the sets, which all is going to cost you. i'm also likely forgetting ones here but there's a lot of kpop mvs in the world and my memory sucks.
ok to start off, some flops (complimentary):
hair short - wings : unironically this is one of my fave songs+mvs from this era, it has such a creative premise and it's so smart and i'm sad we never got anything else from them.
annie - toppdogg : toppdogg mvs were never particularly expensive, but this one is really restricted, literally. also they get bonus points for being the only group to ever find a way to integrate the members' names into the mv without it being obnoxious.
baby i'm sorry - myname : one of the best story mvs of all time. i don't think this one was actually that cheap because there's a lot of actors but it likely had very little physical production costs because it's all shot on location and it's probably only shot with a handheld camera. there is actually choreography and styling for this and it's very inexplicably 2013.
she - vromance : i'm pretty sure they shot this mv with 12 dollars and a piece of lint and technically i think star is a more interesting mv with better thought and planning but idk. there's something about she that i think is very charming and i forgive the low budget-ness of it just for the fact that it's so wholesomely cute.
"it's just a guy hanging out":
2 kids - taemin : i know taemin would rather forget that 2 kids exists but genuinely it's one of my favourite mvs of his and hot take it's one of his best. it is the epitome of low budget stealth filming with maximum impact; he filmed this and the think of me mv in the off time he was in paris while he was on tour with superm, and the exhaustion and bitterness and sadness and remorse in this really shine. it perfectly captures that watery feeling of being awake for the dawn during a bender. taemin actually does so well with these smaller scale atmospheric mvs but they tend to be underappreciated; see day and night.
after we ride - brave girls : 99% of this is shot on location in mostly public + outdoor areas but the mv really rides on the performances of the girls and the skills of the editor and cinematographer, who really knocked it out of the park in terms of establishing the atmosphere. this has some really really phenomenal colour grading that gives everything that high sheen 'neon lights reflecting on a wet street' look that really amps up the feeling.
-> sub-genre: pandemic bottle mvs
mayday - crush : maybe the most iconic pandemic mv, which also purposefully looks inexpensive due to the camera equipment and editing techniques.
lazy - woosung : really clean colour palette and i love the integration of the feature, as well as the styling change at the last chorus. i can't remember if this made it onto my best of 2021 list in the end but it was in my runners up for a while.
down - a.c.e : one of the best things about a.c.e is their creative directors and designers, who are frankly incredible at their jobs, because they can stretch a shoestring budget and make it look so good. it was kinda tough to pick just one mv from their catalogue but i settled on down because it's all shot in a single location in one day and really utilizes the vertical format in a way that i've seen few mvs do. runner up is changer, which was shot somehow somewhere during the promos for higher, which holy shit they were so busy last summer.
unusually small budget for a big 3:
view - shinee : view changed the kpop mv game. this isn't case of low budget because no budget, this is a case of concept that doesn't play out to be very expensive to produce. by shooting everything on location (including the dance sequences) min hee jin took the money that would have gone to set building and used to pay more for location (it's shot in malaysia) and for better and more unusual editing than kpop had really seen at the time.
1of1 - shinee : again, this was all about style, and the main feature of this is absolutely the clothing. otherwise it's quite literally just filmed in a white box.
i want you - shinee : there were FOUR mvs shot for tsol and they all are absolutely fantastic. i wouldn't say any of them are cheap but i want you is shot primarly in a single studio space and on a greenscreen, so it's not the most expensive of the bunch. countless is also filmed on a single set, but i think i want you shows a much more effective use of style (even though i do love countless). i've talked about tsol before and as a full work it's one of the best kpop comebacks of all time.
blooming day - exo cbx : she's an icon. every minimalist colour pop kpop mv thinks it's blooming day and guess what? there's only one blooming day. in this case similarly to view, it isn't about a lack of budget and instead it's that the concept itself does not require a huge amount of expensive spectacle.
breath + last piece - got7 : i'm putting these together as a double feature because they were filmed back to back on the same sets and although they are not cheap by any means, since these are custom sets, but comparatively (to other jype mvs) both of these have very low production value and a high economy of shots. i remember watching these at release and actually going 'oh these are cheap....???'. however, despite being limited to these twoish locations these are very well filmed and there's a lot of very good editing here that makes them interesting.
call me baby - exo : maybe the least expensive exo mv but also one of the best. i know there's supercars but those are definitely rented and there's a grand total of three locations (and two of them are empty warehouse/studio spaces). i really like this mv because of that absolutely ripping intro with kai/baekhyun/xiumin/suho/sehun in the car, and it shows a really strong consistent creative direction that makes it look more expensive than it is.
not necessarily cheap but very good use of a gimmick:
goosebumps - onf : ENTIRELY greenscreened!!!!!!! we moved on TOO fast from this and we need to talk about it more!!! beautiful beautiful was predominently vfx but goosebumps took it to a new level. other than a few shots in a white box this mv is built entirely by a vfx team and that is neither that cheap or fast but it is a FEAT.
skinz - onlyoneof : i wrote a post about skinz here and i'm sticking to my guns about this being one of the most interesting mvs released this year so far.
gr8u - vixx : great gimmick, 10/10. honestly most vixx mvs are pretty low budget and i think this is in the middling bit but it still counts.
take over - do hanse : this is all shot in the same black box studio with a single projector screen. i'm not joking. the director of this mv is insanely smart and very good at getting bang for their buck, so i bet you that the most money went towards hiring the horse and neonmilk, probably.
rain to be - onewe : they sacrificed a whole bunch of equipment in order to film this and that's why it's not a particularly cheap mv, but it was quite literally shot all in a single session in a single location, which is more restricted than 90% of most kpop mvs. and yes i know onewe is a kband but i literally think about this mv like once a week.
fantasy - fei : another vfx heavy mv that is supremely effective. it's obviously got funding behind it but it's got quite a restricted scope that makes it feel as close quartered as it is.
face id - epik high : epik high are very good at high impact mvs with limited scales and their two from last year are both soooooo good. they were both on my best of 2021 list so i'm not gonna go into a lot of detail but face id in particular really works that gimmick good.
i'm tempted to put a couple of jackson's solo mvs here, because his mvs are very very good for being limited in funds (as he's paying for them himself) and he's really good at capturing specific styles and feels (lmly and pretty please with that 80s/90s hong kong cinema feel) but they're not technically kpop so i'll settle for just mentioning them here at the end.

What was/has been your kpop journey?? What was the first grouo you followed/song you listened to and loved? When was it? When did you find your ult group(s)? I'm always curious how people got into kpop 🥰
omg omg i love this questions and you!! you are literally too good to me always, thank you for always interacting with me bby~
so my kpop journey started in 2009! i was 9 years old and watching boys over flowers (the greatest kdrama of all time lmao) and i heard this little diddy called Stand By Me by a wonderful group called SHINee. that is where it all began. at the time i literally thought SHINee was only Jonghyun, I also thought that he made all of the songs in the show so all the other OSTs (some of which were by ukiss and others) i thought was just Jjong... i really had 0 concept of what kpop was, i just thought the music sounded phenomenal and i was always humming it and singing it.
insert 2011 when exo debuted. i was in love with kyungsoo the second i laid eyes on him. i followed exo as a whole really loosely, but i was infatuated with D.O. this is when the spiraling began, i went from exo to bigbang and i was convinced by the age of 13 that i was going to marry Taeyang, that is ofc until bts debuted in 2013 and i saw Namjoon. in all of this time i learned that SHINee was 5HINee and Minho for maybe a year became my bias, Jinki bias wrecker, i learned what a bias wrecker was lmao, fell in love with Hyuna in the bubble pop MV, watched team B become iKON on the survival show WIN: Who Is Next, played G-Dragon’s Crayon MV for my entire class in like 4th grade on our smart board, fought for mint namjoon supremacy, got death threats from ARMY on twitter for the first time, etc etc. sprinkled between SuJu and 2pm and 24K and ToppDogg, the list never ends. i even twirled baton to Monster by EXO.
i loosely like girl groups, definitely more now than I used to, but my favs are Orange Caramel, AOA, SISTAR, and EXID, so you can kinda grasp how old my taste is lmaoooo. nowadays i like twice, dreamcatcher, purplekiss, weeekly, fromis_9, and purplebeck (i also enjoy some problematic people’s music, but we won’t talk about that....)
my ult groups have kind of fallen in to place over time. SHINee happened first so ofc they’re my ult group, they started it all for me and brought/bring me so so much happiness. from there Day6 came along whom i found mid 2016, and absolutely fell in love with. Day6 is synonymous with comfort for me. they saved me in my worst times and i don’t know what i’d do without their music. my third ult group has actually changed as it gone from exo to bts to nct, to finally, DKB! they bring me so so so much happiness and taking the time to get to know them was the best decision i’ve made in a while!
nowadays i stan/like over 100 groups and i’m very poor because of it haha sjfalkdhflakdsjf
my bias ults are Jjong, Sungjin, Mark Lee, Junseo, half of Seventeen S.Coups,
*** please note that mOrk is only 3rd ult because Jjong and Sungjin have quite literally saved my life

I went into your askbox ready to talk abt an underrated group but it turned into a weird, sad rambling mess and then I deleted it anyways pls share your group recs
anon that’s such a mood you have no idea how many times i start writing a post and the same thing happens so i end up deleting it or saving it to my drafts dkfjhg but if you do get your thoughts together id love to hear them!
first of all disclaimer that aside from toppdogg/xeno-t i don’t consider myself a stan of any of these groups meaning i know little to nothing about the members or the group’s history. also some of these groups i know their whole discography and others i literally only know one song, but i’ll try to make that clear for each group!
secondly most of these are gonna be boy groups. i did and do listen to girl groups but when it comes to underrated groups i mostly know about boy groups OTL
thirdly this is gonna be a long post because a lot of these songs/groups were a huge part of my introduction to kpop and im very nostalgic about them but i don’t really get the chance to talk about them a lot! that being said i’m going to put the actual recs below the cut but for your convenience i’ve also put together:
youtube and spotify* playlists of my recs!
*unfortunately i couldn’t find acrush’s action on spotify ;-;
to all of my followers i encourage yall to listen to at least a few of my recs, especially if you’re not familiar with a lot of underrated groups. there are some hidden gems in there!
the groups i’m more familiar with are toward the top of the list but other than that they’re in no particular order! so without further ado...
1. ToppDogg/Xeno-T
As I’ve mentioned on my blog a few times before, toppdogg is the only group i’ve stanned aside from svt, and the group that got me into kpop. i could say a lot about them but i’m gonna focus on music recs! my favorite td song is without a doubt rainy day, which is the title track for their last* album first street, which is also my favorite album by them and the first kpop album i bought if memory serves. i especially recommend the b-side sunshine.
first street is pretty different than their other music so if you like it you may not necessarily like their other music but some of my other td recs include annie, arario, topdog, and open the door. if you like rap you might want to check out peekaboo!
*by “last album” i mean their last under the name toppdogg. after rainy day era td went from ot9 to ot5 and rebranded as xeno-t and released the japanese single together which i love
final note on td/xt: some of the members have worn black hairstyles in the past and in some of their MVs which is 😬 so i just wanted to give a heads up for anyone who wants to avoid that
2. IZ
I literally recommend IZ’s entire discography, especially if you’re a fan of rock or k-bands. a friend of mine introduced me to them when they debuted back in 2017 and I’ve been listening to their music on and off ever since. in the last few months I finally listened to their whole discography and im literally obsessed
but for a starting point i’ll suggest all you want, angel, eden, and hello
3. FANXY RED/ACRUSH
sapphics... stan fanxy red DKJFH the only reason i say i don’t stan them is i feel there’s not enough content to get to know the members super well. but they’re known for being a gender non-conforming/androgynous girl group and also...lesbians (ok idk/remember if the members have openly identified as lesbians but im also not just saying that bc of their fashion/concept watch this guide video if u want to know more about them)
songs to check out: T.O.P, holla, and action
im also IN LOVE with marco’s solo song all right
4. SNUPER
ok here’s where i start getting into groups i know less about dkfhg snuper’s song platonic love is basically a kpop version of take on me and it slaps! their song you=heaven is super cute it’s just one of those songs that makes me smile :’)
5. SPEED
ok i feel like if you know anything at all about underrated groups youve probably heard of speed, but i can’t not mention them. their choreos for what u and don’t tease me in particular are insane. if you want to see a choreo in heelys and Literal acrobatics check these out
6. VROMANCE
i cannot recommend she by vromance enough ive literally considered creating a youtube channel just so i can make a video talking about this song and mv. which might be hyping it up too much, in the grand scheme of things its not super unique or anything but it is still amazing and i love it a lot.
on the other hand their song im fine made me cry actual tears :)) this is fine. im fine
7. BOYFRIEND
ok, from my understanding boyfriend used to be more well known so on the whole they may not qualify as an underrated group, but i specifically want to recommend their song to my bestfriend which was released in 2016 and only has 1M views which is a shame bc its honestly such a good song its so cute
8. KNK
THEIR SONG RAIN IS LITERALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE KPOP SONGS EVER ITS SO GOOD OH MY GOD. PLUS UMBRELLA CHOREO??? HELLO??? AND THE MV IS SO PRETTY IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY FOR MORE REASON THAN ONE OK THANK U FOR YOUR TIME
9. 24K
i’m a big fan of their song only you, and super fly is also good! i believe they self produce/write at least some of their songs! also random but i always remember the member cory, who’s korean-american, saying his parents named him that bc when u call his name in korean fashion (cory-ah!) it sounds like korea which is dkfghj cute
10. HOTSHOT
i don’t have much to say about hotshot except that jelly is iconic
+bonus
i have a few other groups that come to mind when i think of underrated groups but i don’t have any song recs for, either bc i never actually listened to them or its been ages and i forgot DKJFH but if you’re really interested in underrated groups or are desperate for new groups or music you might try checking out UP10TION, cross gene, bulldok
i know there are loads more underrated groups i’ve at least heard of but for some reason these three popped into my head when i was looking for the other groups on my list and i figured i’d at least throw them out there!

I was tagged by @squishy-woozi to do this super interesting tag game ^3^
Rules: List your favorite rookie group since you got into kpop til current year. Only 1 group per year is allowed! (Watch me ignore this part in my very first year :’D)
2013 - ToppDogg & BTS
I really can not choose one of them, because I was with them both since shortly after their debut and they are very dear to my heart for that ^^” Can you even count ToppDoog anymore though as they go by Xeno-T now and are basically only... not even half of the members anymore? Anyways, these were my first groups that I saw debuting and seeing their very different paths until today is kinda… very sad ;; and just shows how different your journey in that industry can go depending on your company.
Honorable Mention: Boys Republic (who I only got to stan early 2014, but love VERY VERY MUCH TOO AND I’M STILL NOT OVER THEIR INOFFICIAL DISBANDMENT, DON’T TOUCH ME!), AlphaBAT (I saw them debut, but I have no clue anymore what they are up to now cause they had a similar faith as ToppDogg and it makes me very sad ;;)
2014 - GOT7
GOT/ suffered the same faith as B.A.P, Astro and so many groups I stan now: Angi showed them to me, I decided to not be interested somehow and then went back to stanning them a bit later :’D This is the thing I somehow often do. By now they’re one of my top faves and that new album title is scaring me cause if this is bad news then I don’t wanna hear it ;^; also fun facts nobody cares about: Ale visiting South Korea? Biggest GOT7 stan. I dunno what happens to me the moment I touch Korean ground, but that GOT7 stan switch turns on for the whole time I’m there x’D maybe cause the Hard Carry comeback happened when I visited South Korea for the first time and then Spinning Top happened the time I was there for a short trip ^^”
2015 - Monsta X
I only got into Monsta X a year after their debut :’D I actually checked out the Trespass MV when it came out, but 2015 was a wild year in every way and I simply didn’t have the time and energy to get into them properly. To then start stanning them in 2016 and since then they own a big part of my little heart ;;
Honorable Mention: Seventeen (who I wouldn’t be the slightest interested until 2019, because I always thought they were overhyped. I was wrong, okay xD”)
2016 - Astro
My story as an Astro stan is such a weird one as I did look into them when they debuted thx to Angi stanning them, but I refused to get into them cause most of them seemed so young to me and back in the day huge age gaps just felt weird.I did listen to their music ever since then though and then started to actively stan them in 2019 while I was in Japan and had some time to for once actually decide on a group to stan voluntarily :’D
2017 - Golden Child & ONF
No, I can’t decided once more cause I did start stanning both in 2017. I didn’t really have time to focus on either group though which was why I would casually listen to their songs until last year (ONF) and this year (Golden Child). I guess I missed out on a lot of great groups right when they debuted ^^”
2018 - Noir
The first group in a very long time that I’ve been with since their debut days. I love them so so much ;; they’re the cutest bubs and after meeting them in person last year I’m just very smitten with them ;; they work so hard and deserve so much more recognition. Airplane Mode has been released in 2018 and I’m still listening to it on repeat ever since. It’s 5ever a bop **
Honorable Mention: Stray Kids (who I only got into in January 2020 - as you might have realized: I’m slow in staning :’D)
2019 - Jus2
I told myself to not mention subunits, but I don’t have any other group to mention here. Tbh I casually listen to newer groups, but I don’t stan them. Maybe because I stan enough groups as it is and I don’t have the time to commit to others ^^”
2020 - I have none to mention here
*points at 2019* I really don’t have time to invest into any other groups anymore. I reached my limit ^^” considering that I work fulltime, stan all those other groups and have other hobbies ^^” Also 7 years is a long time... maybe I should start retiring :’D
This was super fun and interesting to do ^-^
I tag @goldenkookiebites @jjsungie (feel free to not do it if you don’t want to :3)
