Throwback Thursday: John "Jack" W. Topley was hired as Princeton's proctor--i.e., the head of campus security--in 1892, taking over following the retirement of Matthew Goldie. In 1907, he resigned to open a saloon directly across the street from Nassau Hall. Students were delighted; the Dean, not so much. He sold the saloon in 1913. He is shown here ca. 1910s.
