Pakistan Super League Severely Hit, Several Overseas Stars Pull Out Ahead Of New Season
Several high-profile international cricketers have pulled out of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to the overlapping of dates with other franchise-based tournaments and many cricket boards denying permission to their players to compete in domestic T20 competitions. The PSL begins in Lahore on February 17 and all the six franchises have been hit hard with several players opting for the Bangladesh Premier League, ILT20 and SA20 leagues.
PSL side Multan Sultans have lost several players they had initially signed up for the upcoming season, with England pace bowler Reece Topley being the latest to pull out due to an injury.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also said it had not issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) to Topley to play in the PSL.
Some other boards are also having second thoughts about giving no-objection certificates for PSL.
Multan will also be without Pakistan fast bowler Ehsanullah, who has failed to recover from an elbow surgery he suffered last year after the PSL.
Peshawar Zalmi have also lost a big name in Lungi Ngidi of South Africa, while Quetta Gladiators will be without Sri Lanka's Wanandu Hasaranga.
West Indies cricketers Shai Hope, Matthew Forde and Akeal Hosein, South Africa's Tabraiz Shamshi and Rassie van Der Dussen, England's James Vince and Afghanistan's Noor Ahmed and Naveen ul Haq, among others, will also skip the entire tournament.
A PSL franchise owner has asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to revisit the tournament window, as it is not possible to get big players when three leagues are happening on after the other.
"The SA20 ended recently and the ILT20 concludes on the day the PSL begins, so it is getting difficult to sign big players now," he said on condition of anonymity.
He also pointed out that January-February is a busy season for international cricket series. Sri Lanka are playing a series against Afghanistan, South Africa are in the middle of a two-Test series against New Zealand while West Indies are playing a series against Australia.
"There is an acute need to change the PSL window, else it will lose its charm if we don't get big overseas names," he added.

Curious squad announcements
England squad for ODI series against New Zealand: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.
I mean, it’s incredibly similar to the squad of four years ago that won and won dramatically, which is mainly good. I mean, they absolutely won on a wing and a prayer, but the same team will have the same wings and prayers, so. I’m curious if S Curran will be in the starting XI. Probably - hopefully - and it seems to me that he’s the one projected to take on the Ben Stokes, batting-six-and-there-at-the-end role, and he doesn’t seem ready for that now so I guess the inclusion of Stokes is good. Just, you know, it’s better if everyone arrives in India with the Captain able to move.
I’m a bit surprised by the inclusion of Jason Roy. He hasn’t done much for a while. I guess I’m pleased in the sense that I like loyalty to players, but I was expecting Jacks, Crawley and Foakes and they have all contributed more to recent matches (although admittedly in different formats). But I’m also pleased because I have loyalty to players and if J-Roy can find some form with Jonny, England will stand in incredible stead.
Leaving out Harry Brook though.
Chuffed for David Willey.
England squad for T20 series against New Zealand: Jos Buttler (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Josh Tongue, John Turner, Luke Wood.
Yay, Will Jacks! I think he might be the crucial test player of the future so it’s nice to see him beginning to be included. Also great to see more Rehan Ahmed.
I wondered about Crawley, but the red ball and white ball teams seem to be pulling away from each other to some degree, so I’m not that surprised.
No Dan Lawrence in either format, which is a shame.
I don’t recall Gus Atkinson when Surrey have played Middlesex but I guess he must be something. Surrey are certainly an extremely strong side - the white ball team isn’t a million miles from a Surrey 1st XI. Which brings me to…
Seriously. Has Foakes set fire to a pavilion? Murdered a groundskeeper? Chained himself to The Oval and refused to leave?

[ad_1] Mumbai Indians will have 23-player squad for the next season. (PC: X.com) The Mumbai Indians (MI) had done most of their heavy lifting before the auction, using up Rs 75 crore of their total purse on retaining five players. Rohit Sharma, former captain, Hardik Pandya, the current leader, Suryakumar Yadav – India’s T20 captain – Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma all stayed, meaning that the auction focus was very much on the foreign contingent and finding bowlers to supplement Bumrah’s sublime skills. “We had four of our top 7 in place already, just needed to fill a couple of slots with the right complimentary players,” said Akash Ambani, the team owner, after the two days in Jeddah. “We focused a lot in this auction on getting our bowling combination right and I think we have achieved that at the end of two days of auction.” HITS Though he’s 35, bringing back Trent Boult could be an inspired move. Back in 2020, he enjoyed his best IPL season in MI colours, taking 25 wickets from 15 games at an economy rate under 8. With Deepak Chahar, once MS Dhoni’s go-to new-ball bowler, also drafted in, MI potentially have a new-ball attack that could hoop it around corners in most conditions, leaving Bumrah to do his damage in the second half of the innings. Chahar has played just 18 games in the last three years though, and keeping him fit will be of paramount importance. MI have also taken a punt on Afghanistan’s Allah Ghazanfar, who could be the next mystery spinner to keep an eye on. MISSES There was a time when Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard were cornerstones of MI’s title-winning sides. The present overseas contingent lacks that quality. Ghazanfar, South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton and New Zealand’s Bevan-John Jacobs have not played in the IPL before, while Will Jacks, Reece Topley and Lizaad Williams have barely made a dent in the competition. Boult has vast experience, and so does Mitchell Santner, but the rest have plenty to prove. They may not need to go spin-heavy at the Wankhede, but at other venues, the slow-bowling back-up for Santner and Ghazanfar doesn’t inspire much confidence either. Overall Rating: 7/10 Mumbai were always going to be hamstrung at the auction on account of having spent nearly two-thirds of their budget to retain their stars. But they’ve still managed to bring in a new-ball pairing who could be lethal on their home turf, and a young spinner who could potentially make the sort of impact that Rashid Khan did nearly a decade ago. Jacobs is only 22, but his big-hitting prowess has already caught the eye in New Zealand, while Jacks struck at over 175 in the eight games he played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Pandya will surely have a more impactful season this time, with the captaincy furore having died down, and Bumrah appears to be better than ever. If Rohit can play as freely as he did in the two white-ball World Cups, MI certainly have the weapons to make a play-off push. To go further and claim that elusive sixth title, however, will need some serious contributions from that untested foreign pack. Squad Batters: Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Bevan-John Jacobs. All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Naman Dhir, Will Jacks, Raj Angad Bawa, Karn Sharma, Mitchell Santner, Vignesh Puthur. Pace bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Lizaad Williams, Reece Topley, Ashwani Kumar, Satyanarayana Raju, Arjun Tendulkar. Wicketkeepers: Robin Minz, Ryan Rickelton, Shrijith Krishnan. Spinners: Allah Ghazanfar. Phil Salt to lead after injured Jos Buttler ruled out of T20I series
England will be without their captain Jos Buttler for their T20I series against Australia after he was diagnosed with a recurrence of a calf injury that has kept him out of action in the English summer. England are set to play 3 T20Is against a visiting Australian side from September 11 to 15. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said opening batter Phil Salt will stand in as captain for the T20i series.
Jos Buttler is also doubtful for a 5-match ODI series between England and Australia, scheduled to be played from September 19 to 29. England have not played white-ball cricket since their disappointing semi-final defeat to India in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Jos Buttler was backed by the selectors and management to keep his job despite the below-par campaigns in ODI and T20 World Cups in 2023 and 2024, respectively. However, his return to action has been delayed due to the recurrence of the injury. The England skipper has not played competitive cricket since the T20 World Cup semi-final on June 27.
"Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton has been called up as a replacement in the T20 squad. The three-match IT20 series is set to begin next week at the Utilita Bowl, Southampton, on 11 September 2024. Additionally, Essex batter Jordan Cox has been added to the ODI squad as cover," the ECB said in a statement. Harry Brook is expected to lead the ODI team if Jos Buttler fails to recover from the injury, according to The Guardian.
England Men's IT20 Squad: Phil Salt, Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley, John Turner.
England Men's ODI Squad: Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, John Turner.

The boundary size is in the range of 70 metres and the favourable batting conditions make it very easy for batsmen to score runs, adding that bowlers can hit hard if they are disciplined. The wicket does not remain the same throughout the game and hence batting first is a good option.
