Naruhodō's Pedantry
Part 1
You may not have expected this topic, but if you notice, we've already touched on it a little when we talked about Naruhodō and his attitude to art. He openly criticized or admired what he noticed along the way. This is reflected in another aspect of his personality - an extremely pedantic attitude to his native language, in particular - speech and reading. From case to case, the Easter egg in the form of an argument about ladders and stepladders adds comedy and pleasantly dilutes the atmosphere (this is my favorite, I swear). However, have you noticed that there were many more of these "corrections"? Naruhodō literally has a trigger for misreading/pronouncing words, as well as for their incorrect use.
Let's start with something simple and familiar to everyone: ladders and stepladders
Tumblr media
あ、ハシゴだ。
Oh, a ladder.
Tumblr media
それはキャタツだよ。
That's a step-ladder.
Mayoi used the word:
ハシゴ [hashigo] , which means "ladder"
Naruhodō corrected her, saying that in front of them was:
キャタツ [kyatatsu] - stepladder
Everything is simple and logical, and was transferred to other languages without loss.
___________________________________________
Don Monkey
Next, in the same case 1-3, Naruhodō encounters another injustice - an incorrectly pronounced name.
Tumblr media
“サルマゲくん”のクビが道をふさいでいたのだから!
Because "Sarumage-kun's" neck was blocking the way!
Tumblr media
(ホントは“サルマゲどん” なんだけど・・・)
(Actually it's "Sarumage-don"...)
Tumblr media
(それにツッコミを入れる気にもなれないな・・・)
(I don't feel like commenting on that...)
There are a few things to note here.
First: Mitsurugi actually only used the honorific incorrectly, the name itself was pronounced correctly. Ironically, "don" is not an honorific in Japanese (it is a title in Spain, Italy, and some other countries, it comes from the Latin "dominus" - lord). It has a slightly different meaning:
どん [don]:
1. Sound - bam, bang, boom, thud, thump, crush
2. characteristics - dull, slow, stupid - 鈍 [don]
3. porcelain bowl - 丼 [don]
4. coveting/raga (buddhist - desire) - 貪 [tan/don]
If you think about it, all the options seem completely inappropriate. The only one that can be stretched like an owl on a globe is option 2. So, it is highly likely that a foreign suffix was taken to address this mascot as "Mister".
By the way, the name Sarumage consists of two words: サル [saru] - monkey
マゲ [magei] - bun (hairstyle), chignon, topknot
Remember what was on the head of the TV studio mascot. A man bun like a samurai.
Second: Naruhodo's internal monologue.
If you translate それにツッコミを入れる気にもなれないな・・・ literally, you get the following:
However, I shouldn't let the tsukkomi spirit out.
Who is tsukkomi? We've already met him here. (Minuki gets to the root of it)
That is, he literally understands that this spirit of pedantry and criticism lives in him. And he can restrain himself if the situation is really serious and tense.
The next point arises - it turns out that if Naruhodo is tsukkomi, then Mitsurugi is boke?
___________________________________________
Pigeons, doves, pigeons?
Tumblr media
ね。知ってる? ハトって、 平和のシンボルなんだよ!
Hey, did you know? Pigeons are a symbol of peace!
Tumblr media
そりゃ、白いハトだけだろ。
Well, it's only white pigeons. (Doves)
Tumblr media
かわいそうだね、この子たち。
Poor kids.
Tumblr media
色が白くないだけなのに・・・・ 平和になりそこねちゃって。
It's just not white... Peace has been lost.
Tumblr media
な、何もそこまで
しんみりしなくても・・・・
There's no need to be so sad about it...
はと (ハト) [hato] - pigeon, dove
Now the question arises: why was it necessary to correct Mayoi if she used exactly the same word? It's simple - she did not specify the color of the dove/pigeon, so the type of bird they are talking about must be guessed from the context (feral pigeons).
It is common knowledge that the symbol of peace is a dove, which is called "Dove of Peace" (there is even an emoji for it 🕊)
But in some languages there is no special difference and no other name for white doves, so it is necessary to specify the color (in my language, the phrase "white pigeon" is also used, we do not have a special name for it).
Another funny detail: Mayoi calls pigeons
子たち [kotachi] - children
This word is a slang, an abbreviation from the Kansai dialect (Kansai-ben-abbreviation), while it belongs to the polite (teineigo) language. This is the most polite option among keigo (honorific speech). Derived from the word:
子供たち [kodomo tachi] - children
And now stop again: Mayoi speaks the Kansai dialect? Or knows the Kansai dialect and it sometimes slips into her speech. Considering that she grew up in a closed village, where she was raised in a matriarchal family, she could only have learned it from relatives. It is quite possible that this dialect is widespread within the village. And why is that? There was already a reason - The Edo period.
The Kansai dialect covers a group of related dialects of the Japanese language of the Kansai region. Among others, the Kansai dialects include the Kyoto dialect and the Osaka dialect, which is more melodic to speakers of literary Japanese, but harsh and sarcastic. Since Kyoto was the capital of Japan, until the middle of the Edo period, the old form of the Kansai dialect was the de facto pan-Japanese standard of the language.
We already saw the connection with the Edo period when we visited the Hazakura temple (here). This once again confirms that the Ayasato clan began somewhere in the Edo period and the Kansai region.
Since the Kansai dialect is the most common non-standard dialect of Japanese, it is often used by writers, anime and manga authors to show the speech of a character who is different from others.
So, we wanted to see how Naruhodō picks on words, but we dug up such treasures.
Let's continue in the next part.

Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Fifteen
Events:
The Emperor tells Xia Dong and Xia Chun to look into the eunuch murder. They conclude the culprit was an elite jianghu swordmaster, and Xia Dong suspects Xie Yu is behind it.
Banruo advises Prince Yu to curry favour with Meng Zhi by begging leniency from the Emperor on his behalf. MCS, and Xie Yu, point out that this is a bad idea because the Emperor will not welcome an alliance between Prince Yu and Meng Zhi. Banruo is pissed.
A pigeon comes from Lin Chen to say he's succeeded in Southern Chu.
Jingrui catches his Zhuo brother out late at night and is suspicious.
Shen Zhui visits Jingyan, who tells him to be careful of his personal safety; at the same time, Xie Yu is telling the Zhuo to target Shen Zhui.
A fire is set in the Palace; the Empress gets told off for carelessness and later has a bunch of servants flogged to death for minor offences.
Gong Yu tries to visit MCS again.
Jingrui shows off his sword moves to MCS and Yujin. MCS gets a birthday party invitation.
Names and titles:
MCS and Li Gang discuss Lin Chen referring to him as Lin-da-gongzi.
Consort Yue is a guifei again.
Jingrui and brother Zhuo both refer to Liyang as muqin.
Characters:
Banruo has enough status in Prince Yu's household to receive guests.
MCS ignores Banruo deliberately to put her back up.
When Xia Dong and Xia Chun are summoned before the Emperor, Xia Chun does the talking.
Meng Zhi is not stoic about injuries.
Xie Yu lies to the Zhuo to make Shen Zhui look like a legitimate target.
Shisan-xiansheng is a musician.
FL watches Jingrui's sword practice and isn't impressed, though he was memorising the moves.
Yujin's birthday is the Double Seven festival.
Gong Yu is supposed to be clever but she makes a completely fool of herself. Are we supposed to find her sentiment admirable, or is she just pathetic?
Costumes:
In bed, Meng Zhi's topknot is wound with a leather thong; the Emperor's with gold string.
When got up in the middle of the night, the court ladies dress in splendid robes but very simple hairstyles.
For his sword practice Jingrui takes off his sleeveless overrobe.
Time and place:
The Empress was married when she was 16.
It's less than ten days travel to Fenzuo where the Zhuo live. Usually they stay in the capital from New Year to mid-4th month. This year they're staying longer because Xie Qi is due to give birth in the 5th month.
Jingrui's birthday is the 12th day of the 4th month, and he will turn 25. That makes him about 5 or 6 years younger than MCS.

Animal of the Day!
Topknot Pigeon (Lopholaimus antarcticus)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Australia
Size (Weight/Length)- 46 cm
Diet- Fruits
Cool Facts- The topknot pigeon is named for its red plumage on the back of its head, resembling a topknot style of hair. Living in small flocks, topknot pigeons are sometimes called flying pigs for their guttural and squealing call. These pigeons eat exclusively fruits and stay far away from human settlements. They help to spread seeds across miles of rainforest, helping the fight against habitat destruction. During the summer, topknot pigeons build large nests out of eucalyptus branches while laying only a single egg. Both male and female pigeons help in incubating the egg and rearing the chick.
Rating- 12/10 (Will hang upside down to eat fruit, beating their wings frantically.)

Status: Extant, Least Concern
Time and Place: Within the last 10,000 years; in the Holocene epoch of the Quaternary period
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Topknot Pigeon, Lopholaimus, is known almost entirely from the eastern coast of Australia
Tumblr media
Physical Description: The Topknot Pigeon is a large bird, about 45 centimeters long, about a foot longer than the common Rock Pigeon. This is mainly due to an extremely long tail; in general, this is a very display-focused pigeon, with a distinctive crown of red feathers extending from the back of the head down towards the neck, in addition to a ring of red around the eyes, a red beak, and a stripe across the tail feathers. In general it is grey and black in color. It also has puffy feathers along the neck, though this is fairly common as far as pigeons go. Interestingly enough, the feathers themselves have pale fringes, rather than dark ones, which gives the Topknot Pigeon a deceptively scaly appearance. Both of the sexes are alike.
Diet: The Topknot Pigeon mainly eats on fruit, especially berries and smaller fruits that aren’t longer than about an inch. It especially enjoys fruits from palms, laurels, mulberries and figs, citruses, and myrtles. They feed mainly in the tree canopy, though they do extend into the understory and brush; they climb among branches and even hang upside-down to reach fruit.
Behavior: These birds form large feeding flocks, which are easily located due to their loud flapping and the sound of fruit falling from the trees. Despite this, they aren’t actually very loud, though they will make low, short croaks much like a dog’s barking. This species is nomadic, moving across large areas to find food - they’ll form flocks mainly of convenience, with large groups gathering together in reaction to fruiting flocks. These flocks become somewhat less cohesive during the breeding season, when they fly back and forth between roosting and feeding areas.
The Topknot Pigeon mainly breeds in the spring and early summer over a long period, with eggs visible in nests anywhere from June to December. They nest very high in trees, as much as 9 stories high, though they do sometimes nest lower to the ground. THey make large nests, with one white egg at a time. The chicks are altricial - meaning, entirely dependant on the parents for help until old enough to care for itself. Both parents aid in incubation, though their breeding behavior is poorly known and rarely observed.
Ecosystem: The Topknot Pigeon mainly lives in rainforests and other wet forests, as well as open forests. They can be found in coastal forest and agricultural areas. They mainly roost in canopy trees and other high spots.
Other: This bird is currently not threatened with extinction, with a population known of over 70,000 birds.

bird of the day: the topknot pigeon
Tumblr media
the topknot pigeon is a large pigeon native to australia. they are distinct from other species by their unusual curled crest.
male and female topknot pigeons are almost identical. however, the ‘topknot’ on females is less pronounced.
Tumblr media
topknot pigeons feed off of fruits, berries, seeds, and occasionally insects. their population numbers declined for a time, but have bounced back with the spread of a ‘weed’ fruit tree throughout australia.
