Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Fifteen
Events:
The Emperor tells Xia Dong and Xia Chun to look into the eunuch murder. They conclude the culprit was an elite jianghu swordmaster, and Xia Dong suspects Xie Yu is behind it.
Banruo advises Prince Yu to curry favour with Meng Zhi by begging leniency from the Emperor on his behalf. MCS, and Xie Yu, point out that this is a bad idea because the Emperor will not welcome an alliance between Prince Yu and Meng Zhi. Banruo is pissed.
A pigeon comes from Lin Chen to say he's succeeded in Southern Chu.
Jingrui catches his Zhuo brother out late at night and is suspicious.
Shen Zhui visits Jingyan, who tells him to be careful of his personal safety; at the same time, Xie Yu is telling the Zhuo to target Shen Zhui.
A fire is set in the Palace; the Empress gets told off for carelessness and later has a bunch of servants flogged to death for minor offences.
Gong Yu tries to visit MCS again.
Jingrui shows off his sword moves to MCS and Yujin. MCS gets a birthday party invitation.
Names and titles:
MCS and Li Gang discuss Lin Chen referring to him as Lin-da-gongzi.
Consort Yue is a guifei again.
Jingrui and brother Zhuo both refer to Liyang as muqin.
Characters:
Banruo has enough status in Prince Yu's household to receive guests.
MCS ignores Banruo deliberately to put her back up.
When Xia Dong and Xia Chun are summoned before the Emperor, Xia Chun does the talking.
Meng Zhi is not stoic about injuries.
Xie Yu lies to the Zhuo to make Shen Zhui look like a legitimate target.
Shisan-xiansheng is a musician.
FL watches Jingrui's sword practice and isn't impressed, though he was memorising the moves.
Yujin's birthday is the Double Seven festival.
Gong Yu is supposed to be clever but she makes a completely fool of herself. Are we supposed to find her sentiment admirable, or is she just pathetic?
Costumes:
In bed, Meng Zhi's topknot is wound with a leather thong; the Emperor's with gold string.
When got up in the middle of the night, the court ladies dress in splendid robes but very simple hairstyles.
For his sword practice Jingrui takes off his sleeveless overrobe.
Time and place:
The Empress was married when she was 16.
It's less than ten days travel to Fenzuo where the Zhuo live. Usually they stay in the capital from New Year to mid-4th month. This year they're staying longer because Xie Qi is due to give birth in the 5th month.
Jingrui's birthday is the 12th day of the 4th month, and he will turn 25. That makes him about 5 or 6 years younger than MCS.

Animal of the Day!
Topknot Pigeon (Lopholaimus antarcticus)

Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Australia
Size (Weight/Length)- 46 cm
Diet- Fruits
Cool Facts- The topknot pigeon is named for its red plumage on the back of its head, resembling a topknot style of hair. Living in small flocks, topknot pigeons are sometimes called flying pigs for their guttural and squealing call. These pigeons eat exclusively fruits and stay far away from human settlements. They help to spread seeds across miles of rainforest, helping the fight against habitat destruction. During the summer, topknot pigeons build large nests out of eucalyptus branches while laying only a single egg. Both male and female pigeons help in incubating the egg and rearing the chick.
Rating- 12/10 (Will hang upside down to eat fruit, beating their wings frantically.)

Kind of a snobby rich kid--Pokemon trainers in the anime are typically modeled after their partner Pokemon (Satoshi/Ash's little thunderbolt-shaped marks, noticably on his cheeks, but also his hairline, especially in the older art style, are to match Pikachu!), Trip's partner is Serperior. Serperior is the Regal Pokemon and Trip's team largely has a royal or noble theme (Frillish with its crown and frilled collar is obvious, Tranquill is a mix of pigeon and pheasant [pheasants are imperial symbols], Conkelderr's Japanese name is Robushin, which sounds like old warlord, and the odd protrusion on its head therefore resembles a topknot/chonmage, a topknot hairstyle that samurai favoured because it made wearing helmets easier, but also later became a status symbol and was even later made illegal, etc.--Vanillite is an outlier, but might be an allusion to game Alder having a Vanilluxe ^^), and his design (the stereotypical princely haircut in anime, that pageboy haircut he has + his design featuring orange and purple, which were traditionally forbidden to commoners--moreover, purple is also used for a LOT of PokeAni rivals as it's associated with superiority and arrogance.)
He looks down on Satoshi/Ash quite a bit at the start for being from "way out in the countryside" (tooi no inaka)--AKA "the boonies" in the dub--which isn't too inaccurate. Green calls his hometown that too. Satoshi (Ash), especially if you hear and compare how he speaks compared to Shootie, clearly has a rougher, more acceptable in the countryside manner of speech. Shootie's speech is more polite and formal by comparison... even if he's a jerk to his peers if he looks down on them. ^o^;; (Quite polite around adults, though! Addresses Adeku/Alder as "Adeku-san" [Alder sir] and does the same with Dent [Cilan] as he sees him as his elder in the original.)
Satoshi's manner of speaking could be considered rude for children to use, especially around adults, but rougher speech like that is more acceptable depending on the environment... Shootie uses the more polite "boku" to refer to himself, but he does also use "kimi" (decidedly setting Satoshi and others as beneath him ^^;;;)...
"å ļ¼kimiļ¼: used by men toward people of lower status. Typically not rude (not inherently formal/informal, but makes the status hierarchy explicit, and is therefore better suited to formal situations)."
Shootie believes himself to be and carries himself as an adult. He gets upset if anyone suggests he isn't (see: Iris calling him a kid to rope him into battling Satoshi/Ash--she does this twice and he falls for it every time!)... his fixation on being seen as very grown-up is, in itself, quite childish, but he doesn't realize it.
He's also quite cynical and bitter, with a rather grim worldview, so he sees Satoshi's insistence on peaceful resolutions to conflict as naivete and ascribes that to his background too (saying those means might work in "some hick town like Kanto where you came from"...), basically calling Satoshi a naive country bumpkin. ^^;;; BUT he does learn eventually..

We don't know what happened or why he ended up this way, especially as we see his younger self in flashbacks twice and he's a much more cheerful (if still very timid and shy), openly-expressive child, but between then and now, he's become a more cynical and closed-off individual... "just a little too grown-up" as head animator Iwane put it. Maybe he took Adeku's "grow up quickly" advice too close to heart...?

He's always in a rush! He wants to get to the league as fast as possible, get to the next gym as fast as possible, he hardly enjoys his journey, doesn't make friends, and hardly even is shown communicating with his own Pokemon (exception: the doted-on Vanillite, who we do see him talking to and getting mad at Iris for potentially offending)... until the end, anyway.
[Spoilers beyond this point! I tried to keep them vague, but I wound up spoiling episode 22's conflict with the Venipede quite a bit, there's also the first reunion with Adeku...]
Shootie has a rather ends-justifies-the-means approach to things and is utterly unbothered by being told what he's doing is unjust or even being warned that what he's doing could lead to "great losses on both sides" even by a Gym Leader. He doesn't care if he dirties his hands. He knows and understands humans might have wronged the Pokemon first, but regardless of their reasons, he thinks it's only natural for humans to side with humans--right or wrong. Was he only doing it to save other people? Well... he also stalked to steal intel and then sabotaged peace efforts purely for the challenge of fighting the strongest Pokemon there, so... no, not entirely noble goals there.
Honestly, even when he does help people, he does it in the most insulting and high-handed manner possible, pfft.

Much like Cheren, he's considered a child prodigy (he's introduced as such in both of Don George's tournaments!), so, that explains the ego... as well as the fact that he's primarily booksmart. It's Satoshi/Ash and Bell/Bianca's more off-the-wall strategies that completely throw Shootie/Trip off-track and mess him up. He doesn't know how to combat them, he's only used to doing things by the book! He's not spontaneous and he lacks experience. Being a child prodigy also explains how badly he takes his losses and how quick he is to blame these losses on him lacking something or doing something wrong, rather than chalking it up to a simple difference in experience.
He is still learning and open to it, so he mimics Satoshi's battling style to try and learn from it (it doesn't fit him at all...) and, although he's resistant to it at first, he does realize peaceful means could work and this makes him question his earlier understanding of strength being all about winning Pokemon battles... so, Satoshi/Ash did help him question what he got out of Champion Adeku/Alder's advice, that meant so much to him...
He went and even questioned Adeku about it, but, when he was grossly disappointed by Adeku falling short of the idealized image Shootie had of him from childhood and being disappointed by being forgotten... he hated the gentler, more relaxed (but also, womanizing and forgetful and distracted and...!) Adeku, that he doubled back on a power-hungry path he had started to question on his own. Oof. He stormed off without seeing what Satoshi and friends saw, the Champion still being strong and capable, perceptive and kind, in times of danger...
[Spoiler for the end of the Junior Cup too and this basically puts everything before it into perspective!!]
And, as he reveals in the Junior Cup (where he's still noticably very, very angry and upset...), he does get questioned by Adeku as to what he's battling for... the answer quite easily gives away why he's been so singularly focused on Adeku the whole time and longed to battle him, it isn't just about becoming Champion or about being strong, but specifically... to prove himself to Adeku. He was seeking acknowledgment by his childhood hero. This entire journey was motivated by his desire to prove himself to his childhood hero.

Adeku also plainly asks him if he loves him (the dub skirts around this with the phrasing "Do you have any admiration for a man such as myself?"), which Shootie doesn't answer...
When Shootie blames himself for his loss, Adeku finally does answer the questions Shootie had about strength and suggests it's something he has to figure out for himself alongside his Pokemon and also redirects him from being so fixated on that to the fact his Jalorda/Serperior loves him and that Adeku could sense it clearly throughout their battle. He reiterates that loyalty and trust are more important than things like strength, winning or losing, etc.
After that, Shootie is much more relaxed and less in a rush to complete his journey. We see him talk with Satoshi more politely and tease him in a more playful manner ("Don't get defeated before facing me") and, in the Te wo Tsunagou ending animation, we see him walking around with Serperior out, not to battle, just taking pictures... and when he sees the viewer (implied to be Satoshi/Ash and friends as they leave Isshu/Unova by the map and last photograph), rather than dodge and avoid them like he used to, he smiles and takes a picture.
... overall, Pokemon Best Wishes! is a story about childhood and growing up. The importance of enjoying the time you've got right now, even if we also have to accept that the past is something we can never return to.

A Gothiruselle/Gothitelle who mourns a ferry made obsolete by the completion of the bridge, who dwells in a world of memories long gone is the reverse of a child always focused on the future in a hurry to grow up to the point he fails to enjoy the journey along the way...
Whether it's the past or future, being solely focused on that, you fail to appreciate the preciousness of the present moment, one you'll never have again.
Im trying to understand Tripās personality but I have no clue so if someone tell me about that would be helpfulš
#I did my best!#I also put some pictures to liven things up because I know the giant blocks of text I write about Trip are daunting#Shootie#Trip#Pokemon#Best Wishes!#Adeku#Alder#Sally#Robert#Gothiruselle#Gothitelle

Lopholaimus antarcticus
By Tony Castro, CC BY-SA 4.0
Etymology: Tuft Throat
First Described By: Gould, 1841
Classification: Dinosauromorpha, Dinosauriformes, Dracohors, Dinosauria, Saurischia, Eusaurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides, Avetheropoda, Coelurosauria, Tyrannoraptora, Maniraptoromorpha, Maniraptoriformes, Maniraptora, Pennaraptora, Paraves, Eumaniraptora, Averaptora, Avialae, Euavialae, Avebrevicauda, Pygostaylia, Ornithothoraces, Euornithes, Ornithuromorpha, Ornithurae, Neornithes, Neognathae, Neoaves, Columbaves, Columbimorphae, Columbiformes, Columbidae, Raphinae, Ptilinopini
Status: Extant, Least Concern
Time and Place: Within the last 10,000 years; in the Holocene epoch of the Quaternary periodĀ

The Topknot Pigeon, Lopholaimus, is known almost entirely from the eastern coast of AustraliaĀ
Physical Description: The Topknot Pigeon is a large bird, about 45 centimeters long, about a foot longer than the common Rock Pigeon. This is mainly due to an extremely long tail; in general, this is a very display-focused pigeon, with a distinctive crown of red feathers extending from the back of the head down towards the neck, in addition to a ring of red around the eyes, a red beak, and a stripe across the tail feathers. In general it is grey and black in color. It also has puffy feathers along the neck, though this is fairly common as far as pigeons go. Interestingly enough, the feathers themselves have pale fringes, rather than dark ones, which gives the Topknot Pigeon a deceptively scaly appearance. Both of the sexes are alike.
Diet: The Topknot Pigeon mainly eats on fruit, especially berries and smaller fruits that arenāt longer than about an inch. It especially enjoys fruits from palms, laurels, mulberries and figs, citruses, and myrtles. They feed mainly in the tree canopy, though they do extend into the understory and brush; they climb among branches and even hang upside-down to reach fruit.
Behavior: These birds form large feeding flocks, which are easily located due to their loud flapping and the sound of fruit falling from the trees. Despite this, they arenāt actually very loud, though they will make low, short croaks much like a dogās barking. This species is nomadic, moving across large areas to find food - theyāll form flocks mainly of convenience, with large groups gathering together in reaction to fruiting flocks. These flocks become somewhat less cohesive during the breeding season, when they fly back and forth between roosting and feeding areas.
The Topknot Pigeon mainly breeds in the spring and early summer over a long period, with eggs visible in nests anywhere from June to December. They nest very high in trees, as much as 9 stories high, though they do sometimes nest lower to the ground. THey make large nests, with one white egg at a time. The chicks are altricial - meaning, entirely dependant on the parents for help until old enough to care for itself. Both parents aid in incubation, though their breeding behavior is poorly known and rarely observed.
Ecosystem: The Topknot Pigeon mainly lives in rainforests and other wet forests, as well as open forests. They can be found in coastal forest and agricultural areas. They mainly roost in canopy trees and other high spots.
Other: This bird is currently not threatened with extinction, with a population known of over 70,000 birds.
