Please share everything you know about MLMs I love learning things

Thank you for asking! I’ll start with a TL:DR for everyone: Never join an MLM. Over 99% of participants LOSE money (and time! And friends!). 

A Multi-Level Marketing Company (MLM), also sometimes called Direct Selling, is essentially a barely-legal pyramid scheme. Sales reps can either make money by selling a product or by recruitment of new sales reps.

MLMs make money off of people joining the MLM, even if those sales reps never sell anything, because the sales reps have to buy the product from the company before they can re-sell it. Therefore, they focus a LOT on recruitment (pyramid scheme). 

Some famous MLMs you may have heard of:  Amway, Mary Kay, Herbalife, Avon

We can prove the 99% Lose Money number pretty easily. If you are to only learn one fact to teach others, then look up Amway (the biggest MLM)’s Income Disclosure statement, which they publish themselves, on their own website. Screencap below:

This is PRE-business expenses that sales reps pay out of pocket, and still the average annual GROSS income made by the TOP 10% of the company is LESS than minimum wage. After expenses, you can see yourself how almost everybody loses money. (The money people lose goes to the ppl at the VERY top of the company; it’s not like when a normal small business fails.)

Below the cut is a lot more info, although not close to all I have collected.

Half of the TOP 1% made less than 55K pre-expense; studies show even they generally LOST money, or made very very little after expense (the top 0.5% actually makes any money, and the 0.05% make a LOT of money)

The TOP 10% earns, on average, LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE ($15K), with less than half of the TOP 10% making over $4.6K PRE-EXPENSES

Less than half of the TOP 50% makes more than $631 A YEAR. PRE-EXPENSE.

(Also, they cut the bottom 1/3 out entirely, so the 50% referenced is 50% OF the top 2/3. I’m actually OK with this, as long as it’s acknowledged, for better reporting. The bottom 1/3 were “inactive” and possibly not trying to participate in sales. The top 2/3 still sucks.)

Another example is the Mary Kay public income disclosure [for Canada] (another very popular MLM). 

Again, pre-expense, though also pre-retail sales (more in paragraph below)

The top 0.05%(!) makes average commissions of $124K

The level below that, Independent Sales Director, only 1.7% of the company, makes less than Canadian Minimum wage in commissions

98% of the company, very clearly, makes anywhere from $0 per year, to at most an average of $206 DOLLARS A YEAR (pre-expense, pre-sale)

Mary Kay works a little differently than Amway, where once you purchase a product, MK truly does not know or care what happens to it at all. If all of these people actually sold all the products they bought, it’s possible they made supplemental income, but data shows that most LOSE money on actual sales.

Let’s focus on Mary Kay for a moment, because their structure means the ONLY money the company ever receives was given to them BY their sales reps. So they’re easy to follow.

Why do sales reps lose money on sales?

The market is oversaturated. They have 3.5 MILLION reps trying to sell the same product* - meaning they either can’t sell, or they have to greatly discount the product

Many MLM products are more expensive than the same product elsewhere

They constantly refresh their line of products, so the inventory reps already have is now worth less and harder to sell

Sales reps must buy a minimum amount of new product each month to keep certain perks, even if they haven’t yet sold their old product (min $225, with much higher amounts sometimes necessary to keep status)

*What makes MLMs legal (thanks to lobbying, mostly) is that they HAVE a product, which sales reps buy from the company. I’m careful not to call these people employees, as they are technically independent consultants, and thus don’t receive employee benefits... like a guaranteed income, or healthcare, or anything. If you google “Mary Kay employees”, you will find data on their ACTUAL employees, who do actually make money. This is clearly not the case for their sales reps (table above). Mary Kay has about 5K ACTUAL employees, and 3.5 MILLION sales reps.

So how do sales reps make ANY commissions?

If you convince people to join Mary Kay, MK will give you a cut (commission) of what they spend at the company on product

Since this is the main way to make money, reps are incentivized to recruit as much as possible

They are also incentivized to LIE about how much money they’re making, so people will stay with the company. I’ve read stories of reps renting a fancy car from time to time to convince the people below them that they’re making money

Clearly, thanks to the income disclosure, we can see that they aren't making much money on commissions, either

How are sales reps buying more product if they lose money being in an MLM?

Reps are encouraged to dip into their savings, with the promise of a greater payout later. If they don’t have any, they can open Mary Kay CHASE VISA card, and charge all the products they will never re-sell to it

Many people end up in heavy debt

Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t track what they’re spending vs earning until it’s far too late

What else do reps lose?

Time: Selling is actually a very small part of the business. A lot of time is spent FINDING people to sell to, organizing classes, restocking inventory, recruiting new members, traveling, going to conferences, and more. 

Mary Kay’s motto is, “God First, Family Second, Job Third”, to imply that this is something you can pick up part-time, but that’s simply not true

Relationships: Most people try to sell to and/or recruit their friends and family first, which can put a strain on relationships. Additionally, due to debt and/or need to borrow money to buy more products, many have damaged relationships with those close to them, including their spouses, who share the debt.

How else does Mary Kay make money?Don’t worry, it’s not all from sales reps buying their products! (Sarcasm. Please worry.)

Website + ability to process credit cards: This is essentially an annual membership fee - to access the MK website to buy their products (to re-sell), or to take credit cards as payment, you pay an annual amount to Mary Kay

Business Cards: More petty costs

Conferences: Sales reps are greatly encouraged to pay to attend sales conferences to learn more about how to be a great salesperson. (BONUS: you will encounter many cult-like tactics here, to keep you IN the MLM)

Jackets: Congrats! You’ve been promoted and you are now permitted to wear the Red Jacket! It costs $100. If you get promoted to NSD(?), you get to wear a fancy suit that changes every year and costs $1,000 each year!

How else does Amway make money? Bonus because they are egregious

Sales Reps replacing everything they own: Amway sells a LOT of different things. How can you sell anything if you haven’t tried it? If you really want to succeed at Amway, get rid of EVERYTHING you own that Amway also sells. Make sure everything you own is sold by Amway (people do actually follow these instructions! Cult-like tactics are used)

Training Materials: They make a lot of money off of selling training materials to their sales reps. Aren’t making money? It’s because you don’t WANT to succeed, clearly, if you aren’t buying all the training materials you can get your hands on

Return of the Living Dead (1985) Just fantastic. I don’t understand why there aren’t more horror comedies these days as I think the scary stuff hits harder when paired with some levity (as compared to the strictly serious/grim stuff). It almost feels like a parody of the 80s and I really respect that ending. Gosh movies sure are different now, aren’t they?

The Bachelorette (Episode 18.01 to 18.02) A great start to the season. Lots of fun guys and Michelle is an excellent lead. I really hope they keep Tayshia and Kaitlyn as the Bachelorette hosts forever.

Bachelor in Paradise Canada (Episode 1.01 to 1.03) I was skeptical about this and while the cast is a little smaller, I’m digging the change of location (plus the theme song is just the best choice).

The White Lotus (Episode 1.01 to 1.06) I’m...not sure I liked this. I mean it was gripping television and a really stellar cast/plot/location, but it wasn’t fun? Maybe it’s just the ending that really left a pit in my stomach. Ooof.

LuLaRich (Episode 1.01 to 1.04) We actually watched this at the end of September but somehow I forgot this amazing docuseries! It’s such an interesting study of MLMs, pyramid schemes, and how folks suddenly find themselves knee-deep in them!  Also the duo at the top of this particular pyramid are...just wild.

Only Murders in the Building (Episode 1.01 to 1.10) Fun and silly and surprisingly good chemistry between the three leads. I wonder if it’ll hold up with a rewatch as I found the mystery elements to click better than the comedic ones.

Ted Lasso (Episode 2.11 to 2.12) Really excellent. Just...really really great. I look forward to rewatching the season without the add on eps (Christmas and Beard’s solo outing) to see how the entire season’s plot ties together. But gosh what a charming and sincere series of television.

Bachelor in Paradise (Episode 7.11) I mean how can you complain with an ending like that? Freeze-frame updates on all the couples and prominent cast members? Yes please.

Marvel’s What If… (Episode 1.09) This series started off being a really novel concept with stellar animation. After the last two episodes, I’d say it ended simply being a feature of fantastic animation. Well written but a very similar structure to Phase 1 or 2 of the movies.

Who Censored Roger Rabbit? by Gary Wolf (Complete) Different enough from the film (in a lot of ways!) that it felt like a wholly unique experience. I’m not sure i liked it as well, but it was really interesting to see the source material for one of my favourite movies. Your mileage will vary.

Soul Music by Terry Pratchett  (Complete) Part of what I love about Pratchett is that the story’s structure will be so clear that you know where it’s going yet the fun is seeing how it gets there. Consistently funny and full of fun musical easter eggs. I wish there was more Death in it but his granddaughter, Susan, is a fun addition to the mythos.

Head Lopper, Volume 4: Head Lopper & the Quest for Mulgrid’s Stair by Andrew Maclean and Jordie Bellaire (Complete) The story seems to be heading towards one big culmination and there’s a lot of exposition in this one. I tend to prefer episodic adventures over serialized quests but that’s just me. And dang if the art isn’t some of the most fun I’ve seen lately! Oof so good.

The Dropout (Podcast) This podcast covers the Theranos scandal and season 2 is following Elizabeth Holmes’ court case. The whole thing stinks of hubris and a blatant disregard for humanity by the tech sector and it’s...just so infuriating. Totally worth the listen.

Metroid Dread (Nintendo) Gosh it’s good to be back in the world of side-scrolling Metroid. I’m still not sure i have a feel for the controls but the tone and atmosphere are just stellar. I wasn’t sure I’d get into the 3D graphics but I was quickly proven wrong.

Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Forthcoming, Andrews McMeel Publishing) So I’ve been playtesting my next TTRPG setting with my weekly group and it’s been a lot of fun! A better recap is over here on Reddit.

If we’re just counting AO3, then it’s just one. What We Do in the Shadows. I’ve only had this username for a year. Under different names in different places I have other fics for other fandoms. That would bring the grand total up to 5. I tend to have huge fic dry spells.

66 - Especially For You - Nandor/Guillermo. Gen - Gift fic for @jujubeas. Guillermo is injured (very minor) and Nandor cares for him by buying him food from Panera Bread.

44 - Tell Me Things Will Be Okay - Nandor/Guillermo. Gen - Gift fic for @riskylatte and a collaboration with @andyandnormski. Nandor tries to calm Guillermo’s frayed nerves after they arrive home from the theater massacre.

35 - The Protocols of Revenge - Nandor/Nadja that leads to Nandor/Nadja/Laszlo. NSFW - My first fic for the fandom. Laszlo makes Nadja made, so Nandor proposes revenge. Nadja eventual relents but on the condition that Laszlo watch.

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I get so few comments on my fics these days, so I reply to them all. I understand why people don’t comment on fics, especially NSFW ones, but I love hearing from readers, even if the comment is super short. I love getting replies back from authors when I comment, so I try to do the same for anyone who comments on my fics. I like engaging with the readers.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Rooftop Reflections. Nandor/Nadja. She’s been missing Laszlo since he want on the run and tries to escape by sitting on the roof. Nandor joins her and then leaves her be. She is really bummed out at the end after Nandor leaves and has to be alone with her thoughts about Laszlo.

Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I have not yet, but I’m not against.

I’ve been wanting do a weird one with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/What We Do in the Shadows. They’re both in NYC, and they both have to keep to the shadows, so it makes sense that they’d run into each other. Leonardo vs. Nandor as leaders, lol. Donatello and Colin Robinson getting into technical details about topics. Raphael and Nadja being just the rudest. Micaelangelo and Laszlo straight up chillin’. And Master Splinter and Guillermo shaking their head at their charges acting like such fools.

I’ve also thought about them running away to Canada and meeting the crew from Letterkenny.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

When I was writing HP, yes. It was mainly about how I was ending my chapters, and to be fair, the endings were not great for what I was trying to achieve (setting up some context - kind of omncient). I’m pretty sure I’ve deleted all of those from existence now.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Most definitely. I’ve written mainly mlw and wlw with reference to mlm. I’ve also written OT3 situations with mmw.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I’m aware of. How does that even happen?

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I have not.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes.

I mentioned Tell Me Things will be okay earlier. Andy and I were very equal partners on that one and it was fun take their lead and then run with it and then see what they came up with next.

Nandor the Relentless: Conqueror of Courting. Nandor/Guillermo. A round robin fic where ideas were thrown out and shaped as a team. Nandor tries to court Guillermo in one-sided fake dating scenarios to protect him. I contributed to the last chapter of this gem of a fic series. I’m really proud that Nandor’s lament of the Windsor name was kept in.

Shoot Your Shot. Fendermo. Another round robin known by the writers as the Basketball AU. Nandor is a WNBA pro and Guillermo is her assistant. They’re even stupider in this story than in the show. It’s not complete, but one day we’ll finish it. I’m really proud of the text chain I wrote in the first chapter.

What’s your all time favorite ship?

I know nearly all the stories I’ve talked about are Nandermo, but that’s not my all time favorite ship. I don’t know if I can really pick a favorite. It’s just Nandor/Anyone really.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

A Chance Encounter. Nandor/Silvia de la Cruz (Guillermo’s mom). NSFW. I’m only afraid I won’t finish it because I’m stuck on the next part for how the story should flow now that the smut is out of the way.

What are your writing strengths?

I’ve been told that I’m good and smooth dialogue.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I think I use the same descriptive language too much. The same facial expressions and dialogue reactions. I also need to work on differentiating my imagery and adding more figurative language to my stories. I love seeing that in other people’s works, but suddenly forget to do it in my own.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I love to see it, or even incorporating English language learning sentence structures into fics for characters whose primary language is not English. When I write in another language, I have had a friend who can speak that language check my work and phrasing to make it sound realistic. There was a lot of that in A Chance Encounter and @theoceanismyinkwell was immensely helpful with the Spanish dialogue and the Spanish Speaker in speaking in English lines too.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

The first one I ever published on a fic site was Gundam Wing. I really hope that is not floating around still as I can’t even remember the site it was pubished on. It was peak cringe.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

It’s not complete, but Written in the Stars has consumed an epic amount of my time. The word count alone is two novels worth. It’s been fun to look into Nandor’s past, but also make him somewhat of a softie at that time too for a fic that could be otherwise very dark (there are defintely some mildly dark elements, but it’s generally just regular flavor NSFW). And it’s fun to take a semi-canon character who has one trait and flesh her out into a full person. At least I hope she comes across that way.

So something I've realised, a lot of schitt's creek blogs also happen to watch shameless? Is this a coincidence or are there many parallels between the two or is it just because of the m/m relationship aspects to it?

Good question. I can only speak for myself but for me, I started watching Shameless very early on, I started before s2 aired because when I found out about the show s1 had already started so if my memory serves me well I must have started midway thru s1 or I waited until it ended to watch it all before s2 started. So for me, I started Shameless first and only started Schitts Creek when s1-4 were on Netflix, I binged it all and remember watching the Xmas special live then watching s5-6 live as well.

For me, I got into SC because of Dan and Eugene Levy. My dad had been watching an episode and I was like hey I know him! (about Dan because I used to watch the hills recap show that he hosted on MTV Canada lol) but yeah so for me there was zero correlation between SC and Shameless.

It's possible a lot of people like both shows for the reason that there is a strong MLM couple in both shows. It could be because one show is very comforting and wholesome (SC) and the other is more dramatic but can have its soft moments too.

I'm not sure what the correlation is for everyone but I'm glad people love both because those are 2 of my top shows ever created :)

Favourite documentaries, fiction books, non fiction books and podcasts? :)) x

Hard to recall all of these so I may just say one per category! For a documentary, probably Paris is burning. I know there are elements of voyeurism in my enjoyment of it, but it’s portrayal of creativity and selfhood in the face of adversity is so beautiful. For nonfiction, I recently finished Seduction: sex, lies and stardom in Howard Hughes’ Hollywood by Karina Longworth and enjoyed it more than any book I’ve finished recently. What I loved about it is how it isn’t actually about Howard Hughes (who I don’t care much about) but instead about the lives of women in Hollywood in the early 20th century, including a bunch of early film actresses and screenwriters I’d never heard of. you may have heard of her podcast You Must Remember This, which is all about 20th century Hollywood and film analysis. She is a spectacular writer and her research is damning and exact. I listen to like 10 million podcasts, but here are my recent favorites: people’s history podcast, The Dream (season 1 is all about MLMs which I find super fascinating), Bundyville (HIGHLY recommend this one, it’s investigative journalism on the patriot movement/white fundamentalist domestic terrorism), Cold (if you like true crime, this is top tier; made out of deep respect for the victim and spanning years of deep investigation including audio journals made by the victim/probable killer), CBC Uncover (season 1 is about NXVIM which is so horrifying, a later season is about the disappearance of a preteen girl in Canada that will 1000% break your heart), and also radiolab, you must remember this, my favorite murder, 1619, Mogul, embedded, and throughline!

Kangen Water: The Scam That Pays

In the last few years, I’ve come upon a very dubious business model, which has lured thousands upon thousands of people, mostly from the Philippine community, and … enriched a very few…

In a nutshell, the promoted “online business” has only one purpose: to get as many distributors for the equally dubious Kangen Water (the brand name for alkaline water owned by Enagic Corporation), which operates as a MLM/pyramid.

In Canada, according to Section 55.1 of the Competition Act, A PYRAMID BUSINESS is: a multi-level marketing plan that includes either compensation for recruitment, required purchases as a condition of participation, inventory loading, or the lack of a buy-back guarantee on reasonable commercial terms, constitutes a prohibited “scheme of pyramid selling”. Examples.

Kangen Water/Enagic Canada (Address: 7460 Edmonds St Suite 101, Burnaby, BC V3N 1B2) clearly falls into the category of a pyramid (scheme in disguise).

The big question is: WHY IS KANGEN WATER BEING ALLOWED TO OPERATE IN CANADA?What is actually Kangen Water?

Kangen water® is the brand name for alkaline water owned by Enagic Corporation (read BBB complains about the company here). It is sold through multi-level marketing. The multi-level marketing system used by Enagic® to sell its water ionizer has also been called a scam because it doubles the price of the kangen water® machine.

The way you buy a Kangen Water machine is through a distributor. Even on their website, they ask for a “sponsor’s ID, name, phone number and email address” (distributor) in order to buy a machine.

Every time a Kangen machine is sold, eight sales people — the Kangen Water pyramid — get paid a commission. Their sales commission doubles the cost of the Kangen machine. Replacement filters for the Kangen® machines are expensive too, because they are also sold through the MLM scheme. The same eight people get paid every time you buy a replacement filter for your machine. It’s an outrageous scam!

Every time a Kangen machine is sold, eight sales people — the Kangen Water pyramid — get paid a commission.

The top people (the so-called 6A2–8) in the pyramid get a $800,000 bonus, and a $80,000 Monthly For Life (which, you’re told, can be inherited by your next of kin when you die… not exactly true, but hey — fairy tales work when you’re selling the dream)!

Do you know any other business which does that?

We’re talking about SERIOUS MONEY that the scammers at the top will get monthly, guaranteed… if they continue to supply Enagic with distributors. Money, that they collect from sales of those OVERPRICED, NO-GOOD WATER MACHINES to other distributors.

No wonder they get so upset when they are exposed…

To recap: You can’t become a Kangen Water distributor without buying a Kangen Water machine. From another distributor.

The Kangen Water machines are hugely overpriced in order to pass down the line commissions from sales.

This creates the perfect opportunity for the perfect pyramid business scam.

I did my own “investigation” — I went to Enagic Canada main office in Burnaby, BC (7460 Edmonds St Suite 101, Burnaby, BC V3N 1B2) to inquire how I can become a distributor. I was told that the requirement is to purchase a Kangen machine from another distributor. “Just be sure it’s an honest one, there are a lot of dishonest people out there.”, said the guy behind the counter. “No sh*t!”, I thought to myself.

Purchasing a product is never a condition to become a distributor. In any other business, you apply to become a distributor, and only if/when you are approved, you can purchase an inventory.

Enagic sells their overpriced alkalized water machines that make “antioxidant-rich, health water for revitalized cells” (quote is from one of their sites), which will do miracles for your health, and “everyone will tell you so”… although the company “prohibits” their distributors from making such claims. Wink wink.

Some of the “claimed” health benefits from distributors (who mostly know nothing about any of this science) include:

Slows aging process

Boost immune system

More hydrating

Boost metabolism

Relieves heartburn

Cures cancer, diabetes, measles

and a ton of other stuff

In multi-level marketing scams, the parent company keeps a low profile and makes few claims that would attract the scrutiny of regulators such as the U.S. FTC. Instead, they recruit thousands of “independent agents” who are provided with sales literature containing false and misleading claims which they then transmit to their customers or put up on their own Web sites.

These agents, few of whom are well-enough educated to evaluate these claims or to realize that they violate the FTC rules on deceptive advertising, are as much victims as are their consumer customers.

“Snake oil” is a term used to describe deceptive marketing, health care fraud, or a scam. Which clearly Enagic is. Their water machines have no health benefits. They are overpriced only because of the MLM system for distribution of commissions.

So here is what we know about Kangen Water

It has NO PROVEN HEALTH benefits — and because Kangen water is sold through a network of distributors, the company can easily deny any wrongdoing when the individual distributors make such claims.

The Kangen Water cost thousands of dollars — between $2,980.00 and $5,980.00 for their most expensive model. The inflated price has one purpose — to provide large commissions to the few successful distributors.

Kangen Water is sold through multi-level marketing pyramid scheme. To become a Kangen distributor you HAVE TO PURCHASE A MACHINE FROM ANOTHER DISTRIBUTOR — a clear violation of Section 55.1 of the Competition Act.

The company has been sued for making spam calls to more than a million people in the US.

The Health Ministry in Malaysia has taken steps against the sale and promotion of Kangen water.

Finally, the very existence of Kangen Water/Enagic in Canada, allows for additional scams, like the one described below.

The Local Scam

Did you know that you can easily make a 6-figure passive income with virtually no experience, no skills and no education? You may also receive, guaranteed, a passive $5,000–$80,000 monthly “lifetime legacy bonus which can also be bequeathed or willed to your next of kin or your children.”

Sounds too good to be true?

This information is from Enagic’s own Earnings Disclosure statement (as a distributor, you start at 1A — the more sales you have, the more additional distributors you get in the pyramid structure, the higher you climb and the bigger the commissions get. Only 0.24% hold a rank of 6A2–3.):

We don’t know what rank do Darren and Mike hold right now, but it’s above 6A2–4.

The scamming duo, Kangen Water/Enagic Canada main office and the majority of the “Dream team” are all located in Vancouver, British Columbia. But there are more victims of the scam, from many other parts of the world.

The Dream Team Or The Nightmare Mike And Darren’s Business

is a first hand experience from someone who bought into the scam.

How does the scam work? Let me explain as easy as I can:

If you’re on Facebook (who isn’t?) you may come upon an ad or a post where you see ordinary people showing how much money they’re making from their “online business”. “Join our webinar, and you’ll learn how you can do it too!”, they say.

You go to their website, where you fill in your email and watch a pre recorded “webinar”. If you want to join, please pay $149 (US).

After you pay, you join the “Dream Team”, a hidden Facebook community group and you learn that the “business model” actually is to become a distributor of Enagic products.

Basically, this is an online scam designed to trick people into becoming Enagic distributors. Mike and Derren have been featured in an Enagic newsletter, where they talk about “building a community for distributors, which could help each other succeed and change lives.”

There are 3 different Enagic “investments” these platforms typically promote to people.

The first is buying a K8 for $4890, which is one of their most popular water ionizers.

The second is something people call the “Trifecta”, which consists of purchasing a K8, an Anespa mineral ion water spa system for $2890, and a 4 month supply of Ukon turmeric supplements for $760 which will autoship to you 3 times a year. The final and least common is the “Quad” or “Quadzilla” which is a trifecta + an extra K8, that most attach to a bathroom faucet or loan out to leads (people they want to sell to). This would of course be an investment of around $15,000.

AT THE MOMENT (20 Sept., 2021), Mike and Darren’s “Dream team” has more than 90,000 participants. A huge number of them are Filipinos expats, people who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and are trying to make ends meet.

I have to admit, it’s a clever scam as it double dips: first, you have to pay to join the system, which provides no real knowledge or training, but convinces you to invest and buy a Kangen Water machine, in order to become a distributor.

So, if numbers are right, if we have 90,000 individuals in the “Dream team”, all those people have paid US$149

90,000 X $149 = US$ 13,410,000

Not everyone has actually become a distributor at that point, but if we assume half are, that makes appr. 40,000 individuals who have purchased at least one Kangen Water machine at an average price of $4,000.

40,000 X $4,000 = $160,000,000

That’s a lot of profit for Enagic. And Darren and Mike.

Why is this a scam?

Scam: a dishonest scheme; a fraud

FALSE ADVERTISING/DISHONESTY: You’re tricked into thinking you’re joining an online training/business system. In reality, you’re charged $149 US to be convinced you need to become an Enagic distributor and buy an overpriced water machine.

SECRECY: By not identifying the business with a defined public brand, they go unnoticed and it is more difficult to find information about them on the Internet. When you join they ask you not to share information outside the group, neither the name of the private group nor the name of the company and basically nothing. The Facebook groups are secret by design. The less people know, the better.

SOCIAL NETWORKS ABUSE: Facebook forbids “ads promoting business models offering quick compensation for little investment, including multilevel marketing opportunities.”

PREDATORY SCHEME: The scam targets people with minimal computer literacy, experiencing hardships with promises for easy money. A typical “get-rich-quick” scheme. If you can’t afford tp pay the $4,000 for the machine, they encourage you to take a LOAN or a new CREDIT CARD.

SELLING ‘THE LIFESTYLE’: The whole marketing pitch these two do is based on the ‘financial freedom dream’. Which, let’s be fair, only about one to two percent of all independent consultants working for MLM companies can achieve, by making the huge salaries that you hear about in the testimonials.

The websites are built on Landingi landing pages and Clickfunnels. Payments are processed through Stripe. Domains are purchased from GoDaddy. Ads are posted on Facebook and YouTube.

Why are the authorities closing their eyes at thousands of people being scammed into purchasing overpriced, useless machines?

Why are unethical business systems like Mike and Derren’s being allowed to exist?

Additional Information: BBB opened an investigation into betterlife.buzz (AKA Darren and Mike also AKA WorkShopReplay)(note: after BBB’s investigation, the betterlife.buzz homepage seems to have been disabled. However, training.betterlife.buzz is active) due to public inquiries. During the course of the investigation, BBB found that betterlife.buzz operated affiliate marketing webinars and sold an affiliate marketing program. The stated purpose of these webinars was to introduce & explain the basics of the affiliate marketing program offered by betterlife.buzz. The webinars are 60–90 minutes in length. The content of the webinar is aspirational and motivational rather than informative.

BBB has found many other websites offering the same marketing program. The other websites use an identical format, but different urls that link to the same privacy policy and terms and conditions pages.

The webinar has two sections, the first is the founder or host talking about why viewers should become affiliate marketers, what the earnings potential is and how little work is involved. The second half is current users of the program talking about their introduction and experience with the program. The webinar does not provide any specific details about the affiliate marketing program.

The few mentions of the program do not include sufficient details for a viewer to understand how the program operates or what their involvement will be. The webinar host claims that the program “does 90% of the work for you”. According to the webinar, the software they give you access to is worth $21 000.00. They mention access to mentors, high commission products and sales funnel, but do not get into any detail about what the viewer is expected to do in order to earn 6 to 7 figures a year. The webinar also does not mention why they are offering this program to others.

On August 16, 2019 BBB asked betterlife.buzz to provide the following information: Please provide the average, median and range of earnings for people using your program. Do your community members market the program? If so, do they make any commission on sales of the program? Do community members earn income based on the income of their recruits? How many of your users are marketing betterlife.buzz? How many of your users were brought on via affiliate marketers, rather than by seeking betterlife.buzz out themselves? The webinar also mentions a “proven sales funnel”. Can you provide some information to explain how the sales funnel has been proven?

As of August 26, 2019 BBB has not received a response.

You have to pay to learn more, where again you are manipulated by a coach who will dance around the bush, rather than get straight to the point. Business owners end up having to invest thousands into Kangen water, which is a totally separate business. However, they have masterminded how to manipulate the commision schedule for profit. Once you are a business owner, they teach you how to manipulate people to join, and how to manipulate Facebook, and other social media platforms to allow your ads…. that are not allowed as this is an MLM. After that you will delete all negative comments to manipulate people into thinking the business is great. You will also share who these negative Nancy’s are to the dream team so they can ban and block them from their business page. They will tell you to follow the law of attraction, and buy crystals…. because if you believe in the business you will achieve? Yet most people don’t believe it because people are hardly making a penny, let alone what they invested. They manipulate these people and use them as pawns. The people at the tops make hundreds of thousands, but 80% invest their last bit of savings or credit, to not make a penny and end up broke.” Leila R
