Greater Toronto Area Iridium Flares and ISS Passes for the week of April 7th, 2019
Tumblr media
(Above: On Monday, April 8 from 8:56 to 9:02 pm EDT, the International Space Station will glide high over the GTA in a very bright pass, rising from the western horizon, passing under Sirius, and then entering Earth’s shadow over the southern horizon.)
The ISS (International Space Station) is visible gliding silently over the GTA this week. The best passes are listed below. (Note: The more negative the Mag. number, the brighter. The larger the Alt. number, the higher up it is!) Many passes are high and bright! (Data adapted from www.Heavens-above.com. If you enter your location in their website, you will get a list of them for wherever you might be.) All the times are in Eastern Time. Click the hyperlinks to see a star chart of the pass.
Date Start & End Times (EDT) Direction of Travel Max Alt. Mag. Sun, 7-Apr 9:48:08 pm to 9:50:28 pm moves W to SW 13° -1.3 !! Mon, 8-Apr 8:56:34 pm to 9:01:57 pm moves W to S 23° -1.8 !!
Tumblr media
(Above: On Sunday, April 14 at 5:12:53 am EDT, a very bright Iridium Satellite Flare is predicted over the GTA. Look above the WSE horizon, just above the bright star Arcturus. The time will vary by a few seconds across the region.)
Iridium flares are glints of sunlight off of the flat reflecting sides of one of the satellites that comprise the Iridium pager and sat-phone network. The flares occur before dawn and after dusk, when the satellite passing overhead is still illuminated by the Sun, which is below the horizon for observers on the ground. The duration and brightness depend on the angles between the observer, the satellite, and the Sun. For even more info about Iridium Flares and the space station, see an article that I wrote here. The Iridium Company expects to finish replacing these satellites later this year, ending the flares, so enjoy them while you can.
Here are this week’s best Iridium Flares for the GTA. Using an accurate clock, go outside a few minutes ahead and look in the direction indicated. You should first see the dim Iridium satellite moving quickly across the sky, and then it will rapidly brighten for 3 to 8 seconds, and fade out. Truly spectacular! The more negative the Magnitude number, the brighter. The larger the Alt. number, the higher up it is! (The horizon is 0°, and 90° is straight up, so 55° is a bit higher than halfway between the horizon and zenith.) These data are adapted from www.heavens-above.com. To get your own schedule, enter your location in their website. Click the hyperlinks to see a star chart of the pass.
Date and Time (EDT) Mag. Alt. Direction Notes Mon, 8-Apr at 5:12:53 am 0.1 57° 227° (SW) Thu, 11-Apr at 4:59:42 am -1.6 55° 236° (WSW) Bright! Sun, 14-Apr at 5:12:53 am -4.5 52° 245° (WSW) Very Bright!
Keep looking up, and enjoy the sky when you do. I love questions and requests - so, send me some!

Toronto singer Chloe Watkinson transcends genres, and writes about real-life issues and her life as a woman in her home town. She’s spent her entire life surrounded by the workings of “show biz,” as the daughter of Terry Watkinson – keyboard player of legendary Canadian rock band Max Webster but she’s carved out a name for herself, becoming known for her edgy, passionate vocal delivery.
Watkinson’s new single "Stonewalling" is a slow-burning cri de couer, (cry from the heart) that plays her fiery, sultry, haunting vocals against an '80s electro-pop background with whiplash electronic beats. Lyrically, it's an ultimatum for her beloved to break down their protective barrier to reveal the true heart beneath, or else forget about it, as she and her backing singers say, "I won't be played like that." Watkinson's powerful voice is the draw here, occasionally sliding into a captivating, gritty growl, especially in the second-verse breakdown. Her emotional resonance is palpable as she rides from a whisper to a scream and back again.
Watkinson has performed, recorded and toured with bands such as Amy Louie Scholarship winners Park Eddy, who held a 10-year residency at Grossman’s Tavern, and Toronto Independent Music Award winners The Distillery – whose music was featured on the Toronto Blues Society’s Fresh Baked Blues compilation. Watkinson's accomplishments include recording with Canadian Jazz icon Jill Barber (2014’s Fool's Gold, and a performance at Massey Hall) and Terry Watkinson (1995’s Teratology and 2016’s Ask), as well as performing at festivals such as Fireworks Over Central New York, CanAm Festival (NY), the Mont Tremblant International Blues Festival (QC), the TD Toronto Jazz Festival and many more.

Greater Toronto Area Iridium Flares and ISS Passes for the week of January 20th, 2019
Tumblr media
(Above: On Saturday, January 26 from 5:50 to 5:57 pm EST, the International Space Station will glide high over the GTA in an extremely bright pass, rising from the SW horizon and then entering Earth’s shadow just above the ENE horizon.)
The ISS (International Space Station) will be visible gliding silently over the GTA this week. The best passes are listed below. (Note: The more negative the Mag. number, the brighter. The larger the Alt. number, the higher up it is!) Many passes will be high and bright! (Data adapted from www.Heavens-above.com. If you enter your location in their website, you will get a list of them for wherever you might be.) All the times are in Eastern Time. Click the hyperlinks to see a star chart of the pass.

Tumblr media
(Above: On Sunday, January 20 at 7:09:05 pm EST, a bright Iridium Satellite Flare is predicted over the GTA. Look above the NNE horizon, between the Big Dipper and the bright star Capella.
Click the hyperlinks to see a star chart of the flare.

Looking for a cheap car to insure for a teenager?
"Looking for a cheap car to insure for a teenager?
I am 16, and have had my license for a few months. Right now I am driving one of my dads cars, a Honda Element, and it is relatively cheap to insure. This in mind, I need a car of my own because he doesn't want me putting too many miles on it. I am wanting to buy a used car, relatively cheap (Max. price of $10,000 but I would like to keep it below $8,000 preferably) with low rates of insurance. I really like a 00-01 Jeep Cherokee, but am flexible. I just want a list of some cars with low insurance rates. Also, don't respond with nothing is cheap for a 16 year old because I know that. I am looking for something cheaper than most.

I tried getting insurance for a 1.0L Lupo and it was 7500 on my own name (tried it a few times using thrid party only, thrid party fire & theft and fully comp but kept getting the same) I tried adding my father as the main & named driver (20+ years no claims) and reduced it to about 5000 which is still very very high and im not even using comparison sites (mainly sites aimed at 17 year olds) :@ I am quite angry becuase my friend when he passed last year got his insurance for 1600 on his own name at the age of 17! Any ideas on insurance compainies or how to reduce my insurance??""

Homeowner's and Auto Insurance?
We've been with Allstate for home and auto insurance for over 30 years, and they have recently starting screwing with us about renewing out Homeowner's insurance. We're pretty sure they are nitpicking about things because they are not writing new policies for Californians, but are keeping existing customers for now. Anyway, I went to the Auto Club this morning and got quotes from them for Home and Auto Insurance and their prices are much better than Allstate's. What I want to know is anyone's experience with AAA insurance. Are they a good company to insure with, any problems, etc? Thank you for any information you can provide.""

I drive my moms car a lot should she put me on her insurance ?
well I talked to a police officer and he said that as long as my mom has insurance and as long as i have my license I can legally drive her car anytime but should she put me on her insurance policy what would be the point of this ? how much more money would she have to spend im 18 and she only has to pay like 400 bucks a year for insurance plus full coverage because she has a good driving record also the only reason i think she should put my on her insurance is if i hit a car or get in an accident her insurance will pay for it if im on the policy correct what about if someone hits me while im driving and im not on my moms insurance policy it wouldnt matter correct ?
If I wreck my car while DUI does the insurance company still Fully cover it?

Why are car insurance companies trying to make me go bankrupt?
Okay, this is extremely frustrating. I'm a 19 year old student, who works part time. I have all-state insurance full coverage, and I drive a 2001 toyota tacoma, which is paid off. And guess how much Allstate charges me every 6 months? $750!!!!!!!!!!!! That is absolutely ridiculous. These son of a bitches are totally ridiculous charging me that. I've never had a ticket, never been in an accident. And I don't care if i'm 19 that price is absolutely absurd for that car. I'm almost at the point where I just wanna go illegal and drive without insurance. I'm looking sleep every night over this I mean seriously do they think a 19 year old college student is made of money. And the funny thing is it's under my parents policy and its this much!!!""

Company Car - Insurance - Accident.?
Well, driving home last night from a club with my friends. Almost finished dropping my friends off we go through a puddle, me not knowing how high it really is so I assumed it was only little. Insurance company not willing to pay full value for car?
A couple of weeks ago a lady ran a red light and hit my car. Her insurance company took a week to get me a rental and two weeks later finally go look at my car and determined a total loss. The adjustor was pretty rude about the whole situation (yes I know that's their job) and started in on how my car has extensive hail damage which is not true. There were some dents from hail on the hood and trunk lid but every used car in Oklahoma has hail damage since we have had several storms over the past few years. He said that they would have paid $5900 for the car but because of the hail damage they will only pay $1250 which is ridiculous. I've done my research and the average cost of my car within 200 miles is $6000 and I have received one estimate on repairing all of the damage was $2000 yet he claims it will cost $7000. The dealership I bought the car from just sold a vehicle just like mine with hail damage for $5000. The engine and everything else on the car was perfect. When I told him all of my info he laughed at me and said oh by the way we are only paying for your rental till the 9th so you need to settle quickly, take it or leave it so I said I was calling a lawyer. I'm waiting on the lawyer to call me back but I just want to know, what should I look for to help me. I've already looked at the market in my area and have record of the prices for the same make and model. I can't take it to a body shop because the car is crushed. Any info appreciated.""

Have a car but no insurance?
This is an answer I got about owning a car with no insurance and if my license would be suspended even if I turn in the tag and registration. It makes no sense as a lot of people have licenses for ID only and do not have a car (because they aren't allowed or can't drive): By law if you have a driver's license you are supposed to carry insurance whether you own a vehicle or not. It's usually called non-owner's liability coverage. Because of this law they would be able to suspend your license if your company cannot provide proof that you have coverage. This answer makes no sense. I won't say who provided it/they don't allow me to answer them though.

Home For the Holidays: 5 Questions With Air Canada’s Andy Shibata
It’s been a landmark year for Canadian pride, and not just because of the nation’s 150th anniversary. As many Canadians and admirers celebrate their homeland, whether they live there or abroad, Canada’s largest domestic and international airline is celebrating, too.
Air Canada’s new campaign strikes a balance between ‘home’ in the universal sense and also ‘home’ in the sense of carrying Canada in their hearts, wherever they travel. Serving more than 200 airports on six continents, Canada’s flag carrier is among the 20 largest airlines in the world and in 2016 served close to 45 million customers, with its performance earning it the title of Best Airline in North America by Skytrax World Airline Awards at the Paris Air Show in June.
With the holidays upon us and many Canadians traveling to visit loved ones—and people traveling to Canada to visit their loved ones—the airline is celebrating with a new ad narrated by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds.
youtube
Called “Our Home,” the ad captures the emotion Canadians associate with home—a place they carry with them wherever they go—while celebrating diverse and universal values.
The video is part of a larger holiday campaign that last week saw the carrier hosting heartwarming welcome home celebrations at Canadian airports, with pop-up boutiques giving away cards, teddy bears, flowers and even free airfare to some lucky family and friends waiting on their loved ones.
youtube
“I felt a connection to this script because I know what it’s like to carry that feeling of home with me wherever I go,” said Reynolds. “Being a Canadian who travels all over the world, I understand how my home made me who I am and the special regard people everywhere have for Canada. But what’s even more exciting to me is that Air Canada, through the Air Canada Foundation, has been involved with Canadian charities like SickKids, an organization I’ve also been fortunate to work with.”
It’s part of a larger campaign Air Canada launched in November to celebrate home. Canadians were asked on social media to share a story about who they most wished to spend the holidays with. Eight entries, from the most fun to the most meaningful, were awarded a pair of tickets from anywhere Air Canada flies to bring those special people home.
The festive season is here and Canada's airports are full of happy folks welcoming loved ones home for the holidays. This year, we’re making airport reunions even more memorable with our Welcome Home crew at #YUL, #YVR, and #YYZ. #FlyTheFlag http://pic.twitter.com/4X7NsNzv0i
— Air Canada (@AirCanada) December 14, 2017
Air Canada also hosted in-airport celebrations to make the reunions even more memorable when passengers arrived and saw their loved ones waiting for them at the airport. Among the inspiring stories were brothers who hadn’t seen each other in more than five years and grandparents from Boston who longed to be reunited with their grandson in Regina.
“The stories we heard were all unique and really touching,” said Andy Shibata, Managing Director, Brand at Air Canada (right). “It’s very gratifying to experience these moments because our customers are always at the centre of everything we do.” We spoke with him for more insights into the campaign.
Andy, how is this fostering Canadian pride beyond this benchmark year for the nation while making an emotional connection with the Air Canada brand?
We are very proud to be Canada’s airline. “Fly the Flag” refers to the pride we take in bringing Canada to the world, wherever we fly. It is a core behavior that defines how we focus on elevating customer experience.
Our recent ad celebrates Canada’s core values of diversity and inclusion, one of our defining strengths. Our hope is that the ad resonates with Canadians, as well as people around the world who share these shame values. We can all relate to the idea of home, but it means something different to everyone—this is especially true over the holidays, and we wanted to tell those stories.
#FlytheFlag – Home for the Holidays: Congrats Tatiana! We're excited to fly your mother-in-law Marisa from Sao Paolo, Brazil to Toronto for your first holiday season in Canada. Enjoy your first snowy Christmas together! ❄️ Thanks to all our participants and happy holidays! http://pic.twitter.com/ZTQ9m9xv5x
— Air Canada (@AirCanada) December 3, 2017
How is this rolling out and will it continue into 2018?
The ad itself will run on television, online and in cinemas throughout the holidays and is part of a larger campaign that we launched in November to celebrate home. Canadians were asked on social media to share a story about who they were most missing for the holidays. Eight were chosen and awarded a pair of tickets from anywhere Air Canada flies to bring those special people home.
Airports coast to coast are alive with excitement this festive season as friends and family welcome loved ones home for the holidays. This year, we're helping you make these joyful reunions even more memorable. #FlyTheFlag http://pic.twitter.com/61ewHwsMoy
— Air Canada (@AirCanada) December 16, 2017
We also had some fun in arrival areas in airports across Canada with celebrations to make homecomings and reunions even more memorable. We offered gifts, including giant teddy bears, balloons, and flowers. Some lucky travelers were even surprised with free airfare to help shorten the time between visits with their family and friends.
And we’re not ending it with the holiday season. The current holiday marketing activity is part of a larger campaign to come and will be shared during key milestones throughout the year.
#FlyTheFlag – Home for the Holidays: Congratulations Kevin Cox! 6 years is a long time to not visit home, so we're flying you and your new family in Australia back to Vancouver for the festive season (and turkey dinner!) For more info and to enter, visit https://t.co/xZgY8LwsRz http://pic.twitter.com/EvsRoClHTY
— Air Canada (@AirCanada) December 1, 2017
Looking forward, how do you plan to build on the momentum of this year as you continue to grow and evolve the Air Canada brand internationally?
We plan on reaching our goal of becoming a top 10 global airline in everything we do by focusing on elevating customer experience. From the introduction of our new narrow-body 737 MAX fleet to our renewed partnership with the COC and CPC and recent work with Ryan Reynolds, we’re aiming to take our brand higher than ever before.
The press release mentions this being the start of an ongoing partnership with Reynolds; anything more you can share?
Ryan is a Canadian who travels all over the globe, and knows what it feels like to be a Canadian away from home for long periods of time. This makes him the ideal partner for Air Canada as we celebrate the Canadian spirit, and the deeply personal connections we have to home through this campaign. Ryan will continue to work with Air Canada in 2018 with new projects already on the horizon, including work with the Air Canada Foundation and SickKids hospital.
Congratulations to the newest members of @TeamCanada who have officially booked their ticket to @pyeongchang2018 #FlyTheFlag @HC_Women http://pic.twitter.com/LTfJSu1h9I
— Air Canada (@AirCanada) December 23, 2017
The Winter Olympics are coming up in February. Anything we can look forward to around celebrating Canada’s athletes and national pride around the Games?
Definitely. We’ve recently announced a continuation of our partnership with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Teams, and we’re excited to be working with them again to help bring Canadian athletes—and their spirit and drive—to the world stage.
We’ll be backing Team Canada by providing support for their competition at the 2018 games in Pyeongchang and the 2020 games in Tokyo. This includes the air transportation logistics behind flying the athletes, coaches, support staff and equipment to and from the host countries, as well as offering our Altitude Podium Program to enhance the travel experience of the athletes, so they can focus on their training and performance.
Air Canada will also provide every Team Canada athlete with what we call the Care and Share Package. Inside are amenities to make their flights as comfortable as possible, but also gifts for the athletes to give to special people they meet in South Korea, to share a little piece of Canada.

#FlyTheFlag pic.twitter.com/4X7NsNzv0i
— Air Canada (@AirCanada) December 14, 2017
❄️ Thanks to all our participants and happy holidays! pic.twitter.com/ZTQ9m9xv5x
#FlyTheFlag pic.twitter.com/61ewHwsMoy
6 years is a long time to not visit home, so we're flying you and your new family in Australia back to Vancouver for the festive season (and turkey dinner!) For more info and to enter, visit https://t.co/xZgY8LwsRz pic.twitter.com/EvsRoClHTY
Congratulations to the newest members of @TeamCanada who have officially booked their ticket to @pyeongchang2018 #FlyTheFlag @HC_Women pic.twitter.com/LTfJSu1h9I
— Air Canada (@AirCanada) December 23, 2017
