The number of graduates in full-time paid employment has reached a new high but female salaries have fallen behind their male counterparts, a survey has found.
There were over 60 per cent of graduates in paid employment from the academic year of 2020-21, a four percentage point increase from last year and the most since 2017. However, despite achieving the same level of qualifications, first-class female graduates had a median salary of £25,000, £2,000 lower compared with men.
The figures came from the annual Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) survey where graduates are asked about their employment status roughly 15 months after they have finished their university course. More than 355,000 graduates responded, marking a response rate of 43 per cent.
Kate Nightingale, the director of communications, campaigns and research at Young Women’s Trust, an organisation campaigning for equal pay, said that women were unfairly paid as soon as they entered employment. She said: “Pay inequality is there right from the start of working life and only grows over time. Women are putting in the effort to study but not getting the payoff at the end.”
She added: “Young women earn significantly less than young men — on average, around a fifth less per year despite tending to be more highly educated. There are a whole range of reasons for this, including young women going into lower paid jobs and sectors and not progressing as quickly. Discriminatory attitudes are still alive and well.”
The results showed that there was a higher proportion of men earning the top graduate salaries. About 10 per cent of male graduates had a salary of £51,000 or above, double compared with female graduates in full-time paid employment.
Alesha De-Freitas, the head of policy at the Fawcett Society, which pushes for women’s rights, says that employers must do a better job attracting female staff and warned of the economical impact of having a gender pay gap.
She said: “Employers must do more to ensure their hiring and pay policies do not disadvantage women and we urgently need to see more employers publishing action plans. We have a stubborn gender pay gap in the UK, which harms women and harms our economy.”
“It is particularly concerning that this data reveals men begin their careers earning more than women, even when having the same level of qualification.”
The HESA data also revealed that 10 per cent of graduates were either in further study or part-time employment, matching the figure in the previous survey.
Graduates who studied medicine and dentistry had the highest salary when they started full-time work. Of those who achieved a first, their median salary was £35,000, closely followed by veterinary science students at £32,000.
Former design, and creative and performing arts students entering full-time employment had a median salary of £22,500, the lowest among all subjects in the survey. Media, journalism and communications graduates earn just £500 more annually which was the second-lowest.
The Department for Education did not comment on the graduate pay gap but said that opportunities for women in the workplace have increased. A spokesman said: “Over the last decade the gender pay gap has fallen from 20 per cent to 15 per cent, with the percentage of women in employment rising from 67 per cent to 72 per cent. We strongly urge all organisations to take steps to address the gender imbalance in pay.
“To help close the gap even further, we have announced a childcare revolution with 30 hours free childcare for children over the age of nine months, and earlier this year we launched recruitment for our programme to get STEM returners back into the workplace.”

The Duchess of Sussex was subject to multiple “disgusting” threats against her life, a senior police officer has revealed, adding they were “very real” and led to prosecutions.
Neil Basu, the outgoing assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan police, told Channel 4 News the threats were deemed credible, adding that the material would have left her feeling “under threat all of the time”.
The remarks throw new light on Prince Harry’s attempt to get automatic police protection for his family when they are in the UK.
In his final interview before leaving Scotland Yard, Basu, the country’s most senior officer of colour, criticised Suella Braverman’s talk of dreaming of sending migrants to Rwanda as “inexplicable” and suggested his outspoken views on racism may have cost him promotion to the top job in policing.
But it was his comments on the threats to Meghan’s life that appear to reveal why Prince Harry told the high court earlier this year that he would not feel safe when visiting his family under existing security arrangements. The Duke of Sussex subsequently won the right to challenge a Home Office decision not to grant him automatic police protection when he is in the UK – despite offering to pay for it himself.
When asked if there had been many credible threats against Meghan’s life, Basu answered: “Absolutely, and if you’d seen the stuff that was written and you were receiving it … the kind of rhetoric that’s online, if you don’t know what I know, you would feel under threat all of the time.”
He added: “We had teams investigating it. People have been prosecuted for those threats.”
The Sussexes have been approached for comment.
Basu became an officer at the Met in 1992, rising through the ranks to be appointed as the assistant commissioner for specialist operations in 2018. He has attracted criticism among Conservative MPs for his outspoken views about race and policing, such as criticising elements of Prevent, the government anti-terrorism programme which has targeted Muslim extremism.
He was tipped as a future Met commissioner, but did not apply to succeed Cressida Dick earlier this year, with government sources saying they were opposed to his candidacy.
Basu later applied to be head of the National Crime Agency, but was turned down for the job by the Home Office without any explanation.
He told Channel 4 News: “I do know that No 10 has previously interfered in me being appointed to positions. And the reason for that, I have not been told.
“I would surmise – and people who know me surmise – that it is because I’ve been outspoken about issues that do not fit with the current political administration. They are wrong. Diversity and inclusion are two of the most important things for policing.”
A Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement: “A new director general was appointed to the National Crime Agency earlier this year by the then home secretary [Priti Patel], following a fair and open recruitment campaign.”
The Home Office said in a statement: “The home secretary expects forces to take a zero-tolerance approach to racism within their workplace.
“But she is also very clear about the need to manage our borders effectively and have an asylum system that works for those in genuine need, as are the British people.”
Asked whether he regretted being seen as “woke”, Basu responded: “Are you alert to issues of racial and social justice? Yes I am. And if that is the definition of woke, I’ll wear it as a bumper sticker every day of the week.”
He added: “I was born in 1968. [Enoch Powell’s] ‘rivers of blood’ speech happened on the constituency next to where my parents lived and made their life hell. A mixed-race couple walking through the streets in the 1960s.”
He added: “I speak about race because I know something about race because I’m a 54-year-old mixed race man.”

Our enemies are related.
The modern internet is the hateful den of misinformation and escapism because of the coordinated efforts of a new (iteration of the) global far right.
GamerGate was a test run for the alt-right, spearheaded by white supremacist Steve Bannon (among others, such as former US and UK military and intelligence officers) after studying WoW culture for social exploits. The alt-right itself is modern fascism of the social media age-- gamers, media lovers, TERFs, the middle-class white, rallied by memes designed with pyschological war in mind.
Through the likes of (and including) Cambridge Analytica and AggregateIQ, the global far-right coordinated with Russian oligarchs and Rupert Murdoch to add to their force, now bringing their tactics to Facebook. This was before 2016.
Brexit was planned as a test run for Trump. (The exact same people managed the digital arms of both campaigns. This is not hidden knowledge.)
For the latter half of the 10s, the global far-right have been using their power to consolidate forces across the rest of the world. Their tactics evolved, now taking influence from internet horror, ARGs, and social justice. QAnon absorbed all of our conspiracy theorists, and with QAnon's dissolution those old conspiracies have taken top billing again: anti-vax, "save the children," "democracy is rigged."
The UK has been one large think-tank for the TERF arm of this empire, in turn reinforcing and justifying the efforts elsewhere. (That Greg Abott bill in Texas the other day? It literally cited a TERF-adored British court case, even though that court case was overturned long ago.)
America dealt a substantial and legitimate blow to this empire by electing Joe Biden. I know some of you don't want to hear that, or would prefer if I conditioned that statement somehow. But I will not. America is in a better position now than it *very easily was going to be*.
Covid threw the far-right off their heels for about a month. It threw all of us off. But a population isolated and exposed to social media quickly became one they could take advantage of. And so anti-vax became "bafflingly" popular.
The sudden rise of NFTs was the symptom of another arm of war. It is fuelled by grifters, yes. But. You will notice that cryptocurrency is most popular in its least regulated form, and that this surge in popularity came quite "bafflingly" only after Biden came into power. The US has an interest in pursuing financial crimes and has recently emboldened its federal agencies to investigate and seize crypto assets. You may also have noticed a talking point amongst cryptobros, not as widespread as most of their points yet still "bafflingly" consistent, that "fiat currency will be gone by the end of this decade." What I'm trying to say here: the crypto scam is only the lure for a more sinister plan. Attract desperate middle-class white dudes, make them invest their money in crypto, leave them to get systematically punished by the FBI, what are you left with? A fresh wave of recruits for the far-right in their war to destabilize a democratic power. Ripe for new programming, "join our trucker convoys and anti-vaxxers and election rioters, we all hate this illegitimate government and its enforcement of fiat currency, its only role is to bring us down!"
Putin's advanced war against Ukraine is the next stage of this global power grab. They began the invasion in 2014 by taking Crimea. You may notice that the timeline of events just about converges there. GamerGate came afterwards. Cambridge Analytica began its social media operations in 2014.
Putin wants Ukraine. Putin wants to reassemble the Soviet Union. To consolidate even more power, to dismantle the European Union, to break democracy's knees. And Putin has considered this a war against democracy ever since 2014, a modern war with a digital battleground in addition to its physical one.
What does a digital war look like? Like culture war. Like the last decade. An escalation of physical war means the Hell of the internet will, too, escalate. This is not "human nature." This is manufactured and curated, funded by billions upon billions of units of dark money, crypto or otherwise. This is man-made Hell, the only thing white power knows how to produce.
Tumblr, you have never been immune. You were left to the dogs. Escapism was offered to you as a refuge, as those of you not under attack are being asked to walk away. I will not judge you if you do so. Just.. *listen, comprehend.*
Voices around you have faded. Some are long gone. The sex-positive crowd were among the first. Travelers and foreign trans folk are next. You know what I am saying, as it is a pattern. The voices will disappear in order to condition you to get used to a culture without them, a world without them.
This is not about Russia, nor is it about America. This is about a particular band of Russians who joined forces, years ago, with a particular band of Americans, Brits, Germans, French, Hungarians, Polish, Australians, Turks (and many more of nationalities I cannot list, out of ignorance). This is about far-right money and power who are threatened by the potential for democracies to consolidate and *vote them out*. This is about people who are afraid of being cancelled, because they don't know any other way to gain power and would sooner double down than learn a new way. This is about people who have decided that this world is not for them, so they would rather forge a new world out of fire and ice, then rule over the new humans who thrive under those conditions.
We have been at war for nearly a decade. War is now escalating.
Understand, they are here. And they like your jokes.
They will be defeated, as they required nearly a decade of conscious effort and money to even get this far. We do not require the same effort. All we require is conviction. That is literally why so much of their digital efforts were focused on *breaking* our conviction, making us doubt ourselves.
Your belief is power. They seek it. You *have it*. Hone it, tend to it, learn to wield it.
And, seriously, don't stop engaging in the media you like simply because of feeling guilty and nothing else; just find the ways to engage in media that are *training* rather than escapism. (Which also isn't to say "only engage in media!" If there are opportunities for you to support the fight directly, those are vital!)
Take deep breaths. Accept that it's gonna get uglier. You don't have to like it. But even if we dislike life, what else can we do besides *live?* That is the only actual human nature.
