The number of graduates in full-time paid employment has reached a new high but female salaries have fallen behind their male counterparts, a survey has found.
There were over 60 per cent of graduates in paid employment from the academic year of 2020-21, a four percentage point increase from last year and the most since 2017. However, despite achieving the same level of qualifications, first-class female graduates had a median salary of £25,000, £2,000 lower compared with men.
The figures came from the annual Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) survey where graduates are asked about their employment status roughly 15 months after they have finished their university course. More than 355,000 graduates responded, marking a response rate of 43 per cent.
Kate Nightingale, the director of communications, campaigns and research at Young Women’s Trust, an organisation campaigning for equal pay, said that women were unfairly paid as soon as they entered employment. She said: “Pay inequality is there right from the start of working life and only grows over time. Women are putting in the effort to study but not getting the payoff at the end.”
She added: “Young women earn significantly less than young men — on average, around a fifth less per year despite tending to be more highly educated. There are a whole range of reasons for this, including young women going into lower paid jobs and sectors and not progressing as quickly. Discriminatory attitudes are still alive and well.”
The results showed that there was a higher proportion of men earning the top graduate salaries. About 10 per cent of male graduates had a salary of £51,000 or above, double compared with female graduates in full-time paid employment.
Alesha De-Freitas, the head of policy at the Fawcett Society, which pushes for women’s rights, says that employers must do a better job attracting female staff and warned of the economical impact of having a gender pay gap.
She said: “Employers must do more to ensure their hiring and pay policies do not disadvantage women and we urgently need to see more employers publishing action plans. We have a stubborn gender pay gap in the UK, which harms women and harms our economy.”
“It is particularly concerning that this data reveals men begin their careers earning more than women, even when having the same level of qualification.”
The HESA data also revealed that 10 per cent of graduates were either in further study or part-time employment, matching the figure in the previous survey.
Graduates who studied medicine and dentistry had the highest salary when they started full-time work. Of those who achieved a first, their median salary was £35,000, closely followed by veterinary science students at £32,000.
Former design, and creative and performing arts students entering full-time employment had a median salary of £22,500, the lowest among all subjects in the survey. Media, journalism and communications graduates earn just £500 more annually which was the second-lowest.
The Department for Education did not comment on the graduate pay gap but said that opportunities for women in the workplace have increased. A spokesman said: “Over the last decade the gender pay gap has fallen from 20 per cent to 15 per cent, with the percentage of women in employment rising from 67 per cent to 72 per cent. We strongly urge all organisations to take steps to address the gender imbalance in pay.
“To help close the gap even further, we have announced a childcare revolution with 30 hours free childcare for children over the age of nine months, and earlier this year we launched recruitment for our programme to get STEM returners back into the workplace.”

Once upon a time...
Isn’t that how all fairytales start? The princess meets her knight in shining armor, they fall in love and live happily ever after. Aren’t we raised as little girls to believe that we will one day meet Mr. Right and he will take away our fears and trepidation’s? But alas...though my story began with the makings of an enchanted fable it seems as though fate dealt me a twist I never saw coming. Here is the story of how I met my Soulmates.
I had the average childhood. Single child, not much family to speak of. Parents who loved and provided for me. Good grades, acceptance into my college of choice, career in international contract law decided since I was 13. Life was good until one night two months before I was to leave for school police showed up to our door to inform me of an accident that took the lives of both my parents. I was devistated and alone. An orphan at the young age of 18. One minute I was watching some stupid sitcom gorging on popcorn and jelly beans, and the next my world was ripped apart. I was alone with no one to help me along my path to adulthood. Luckily my parents had prepared for any and all emergency situations and the lawyers were able to get me set up for their funeral. After everything including our home was sold I had just enough money to complete my education with a little extra for living expenses to last me the first two years.
I was able to complete my bachelors degree at Columbia University in just 3 years and get a partial scholarship for law school at University of Cambridge in the UK. I worked tirelessly as an intern for a prestigious law firm while competing my degree and they were a huge part in me passing the bar. I could speak over 7 languages and became a top recruit for some well known international law firms across the globe. One in particular was in South Korea and did quite a lot of contract work for entertainment agencies. The K-Pop and K-drama genre were becoming very popular all over the world and many groups and actors were being requested for foreign sponsorships. I decided this would be challenging and exciting so I decided to uproot myself once again to start a new life in Seoul Korea.
Four months after arriving at my new job at Kim, Lee and Song LLC I was called into a meeting by my supervisor to let me know I was going to be one of 5 lawyers that would be helping out the agency BigHit, and sorting through the huge influx of offers their popular K-Pop group BTS were getting. These 7 men had become worldwide sensations in just a few short years. It was explained to me that normally I would not be involved with this team as I was still quite new and young, but I had a rare ability to see market share profibility and business strategies at first sight, and I was able to determine if the offer was indeed beneficial for a client in the long run so I was added to the team. The next day the team headed over to the company to meet with BigHits CEO Bang Si-Hyuk along with several managers and staff. It was nearing the end of the year and several offers were coming in. We were each assigned several contracts to review and it was determined that we would sift through all the offers and bring them the most promising ones to the table the following week for the final decisions. We were provided with a large office suite on site to keep the confidentiality of those involved and lessen the travel needed to complete the sorting of hundreds of offers.
On my third day at the new office it was getting quite late but I was making headway in my stack of offers and decided to go downstairs to get some coffee at the cafe next door. I was in the elevator reading some emails in my IPad when the doors opened. I headed out without looking to see where I was when I walked right into a group of men all very startled to have me barreling right into them. As I realized I wasn’t paying attention I looked up to apologize and gasped. I was staring right at the members of BTS. My sight was on two particular members and they were staring right back, mouths open in shock as well. It felt like time was slowing down and I involuntarily reached out my hand towards them as if to touch them. It was like I had no control over my movements. They were both reaching out towards me as well and when we touched there was nothing but static in my ears. It was like a jolt of electricity ran up my left arm straight to my heart. No Free Lunch in China
I tend to receive a recurring misconception about the Chinese labor market from overseas-based clients. This misunderstanding primarily affects overseas-designed provisional staffing budgets as well as the perceived value of quality of China-based recruitment agencies. In short, agencies are perceived to attempt inflating candidate packages for higher fees. To give you a clearer idea, Shanghai's GDP per capita is below a city like Istanbul, Turkey (3). Once again, keep in mind the size of Shanghai's population (over 15 million souls) and you can understand that GDP per capita does not necessary reflect the reality of local white collars, which are far from being the majority.
Another interesting piece of information is the Mercer's 2008 Worldwide Cost of Living survey (4), which gives us an idea on the rising costs of living in Beijing and Shanghai, with both cities present in the Top 25. The results, however not entirely applicable to local nationals, as based on expatriate populations, still gives us an insight on a certain reality of the local economy. That is, the gap in cost of living observed between a modern city like Shanghai and other "emerging" one, in China.
Despite all these, Shanghai can still be considered as a "cheap" city, with low business operations related costs, minimal salaries requirements, and reasonable living costs below those of similar sized cities in US or Europe.
The "Made in China" picture of low wages is still relevant today. Compared to wages in the EU or US, employing local nationals is indeed an affordable option. Looking at the table 1 comparison of the median US, UK and Chinese total packages (salary + bonus and benefits) on some common positions, the point is made. At first glance, it quickly illustrates the cost-effectiveness of employing local nationals, considering we are talking about the "median" or average population, of course. It quickly demonstrates that employing the "average" local candidate can still be regarded as a cost-effective solution.
If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys... No offence to anyone in particular, as this applies to pretty much anywhere around the world... But, If you take a closer look at this "average" labor market, as it is the one providing input for most official statistics, surveys and other reports that one can easily find online and, incidentally, the segment on which a lot of people base a provisional recruitment budget upon, you get a rather interesting picture... Simply put, by a fellow recruitment specialist, "the average employee in China does not speak English, he does not work in a foreign firm, he does not think outside the box, understand western reporting structures, go to a top university, or have a chance of getting hired into your firm..."(5).
The average candidate has also the shortest retention potential, following a simple logic of job hopping for ever shinier titles and bigger financial packages, thus leaving a city like shanghai with a dramatic employee turnover at around 18 months and a managerial workforce with somewhat arguable overall managerial skills.
If you are the decision maker of one of these multinationals, which are slowly initiating a shift toward management localization by cutting off expatriates' budget plans, would you really consider handing over the keys to your financial, commercial or product development operations to an average candidate whom, however nice of a person, would most likely fail to properly relate to, understand or even communicate on basic day to day issues?
No money, no honey... On the other hand, you have the candidates which are at the center of what is now known as the "Talent War" (6). These are candidates with bilingual English abilities, 5 to 10 years of solid people and projects management experience, strong overseas exposure, the ability to think in a systemic way, whom are fully acquainted with western reporting systems, can deal with foreign clients with the highest level of service quality, have graduated from top Western universities and can leverage on the added-value of their biculturalism. These are the candidates companies are fighting over for in Shanghai, Beijing or other tier 1 cities, with packages narrowing closer to those in the US or Europe, and sometimes going well beyond.
Figure 2 sheds some light on a more relevant picture of the Shanghai employment market (for top candidates), with key functions such as Finance, HR or Sales clearly aligning themselves on EU/US levels. This "headhunter's" dream can quickly turn into an employer's nightmare, if the latter does not properly understand the realities applying to the local market: An overall talented, self-motivated, creative, and experienced manager is a scarce resource in China, and a 28 years old sales manager making above RMB 1 million (EUR 100,000) is common.
Assignments, completed by Orion China, regularly cover positions for Financial Controllers around the RMB 500,000 (EUR 58,000) figure, HRDs in the vicinity of RMB 700,000 (EUR 80,000) and many others, with financial packages often giving a new meaning to the common image of China as the land of cheap labor. You need to face the facts, if you want to buy yourself the next superstar everyone else wants, you will most likely have to fork out a substantial amount for it, at least, more than your competitors.
Money can't buy happiness... but you can definitely get yourself a top senior HR or Finance candidate, in China, for the right price... Sure, there are no comparisons possible between a Shanghai or Guangdong based factory worker and his counterpart in Europe, the US or Japan. Headhunting in China has and will continue to retain its image of "world's factory" for years to come, with affordable labor costs and ever increasing quality standards. Nonetheless, good management, talented leaders and high potential profiles come with a high price tag, just like it would, in "Developed" economies.
Companies that will successfully implement localization strategies, in the upcoming years, and leverage on the amazing opportunities this rapidly growing market yields; are the ones currently understanding that quality, experience and skills come at a certain price, in particular in the Chinese economic capital Shanghai is.
