"Seven federal agencies are partnering to implement President Biden’s American Climate Corps, announcing this week they would work together to recruit 20,000 young Americans and fulfill the administration's vision for the new program. 
The goals spelled out in the memorandum of understanding include comprehensively tackling climate change, creating partnerships throughout various levels of government and the private sector, building a diverse corps and serving all American communities.
The agencies—which included the departments of Commerce, Interior, Agriculture, Labor and Energy, as well the Environmental Protection Agency and AmeriCorps—also vowed to ensure a “range of compensation and benefits” that open the positions up to a wider array of individuals and to create pathways to “high-quality employment.”  
Leaders from each of the seven agencies will form an executive committee for the Climate Corps, which Biden established in September, that will coordinate efforts with an accompanying working group. They will create the standards for ACC programs, set compensation guidelines and minimum terms of service, develop recruitment strategies, launch a centralized website and establish performance goals and objectives. The ACC groups will, beginning in January, hold listening sessions with potential applicants, labor unions, state and local governments, educational institutions and other stakeholders. 
The working group will also review all federal statutes and hiring authorities to remove any barriers to onboarding for the corps and standardize the practices across all participating agencies. Benefits for corps members will include housing, transportation, health care, child care, educational credit, scholarships and student loan forgiveness, stipends and non-financial services.
As part of the goal of the ACC, agencies will develop the corps so they can transition to “high-quality, family-sustaining careers with mobility potential” in the federal or other sectors. AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith said the initiative would prepare young people for “good-paying union jobs.” 
Within three weeks of rolling out the ACC, EPA said more than 40,000 people—mostly in the 18-35 age range—expressed interest in joining the corps. The administration set an ambitious goal for getting the program underway, aiming to establish the corps’ first cohort in the summer of 2024. 
The corps members will work in roles related to ecosystem restoration and conservation, reforestation, waterway protection, recycling, energy conservation, clean energy deployment, disaster preparedness and recovery, fire resilience, resilient recreation infrastructure, research and outreach. The administration will look to ensure 40% of the climate-related investments flow to disadvantaged communities as part of its Justice40 initiative.  
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the MOU would allow the ACC to “work across the federal family” to push public projects focused on environmental justice and clean energy. 
“The Climate Corps represents a significant step forward in engaging and nurturing young leaders who are passionate about climate action, furthering our journey towards a sustainable and equitable future,” Regan said. 
The ACC’s executive committee will hold its first meeting within the next 30 days. It will draw support from a new climate hub within AmeriCorps, as well as any staffing the agency heads designate."

- Worked for a multiversal agency that provided highly trained soldiers to act as mercenaries to whoever could pay, regardless of what they did. Horror was one of these soldiers, as he was indebted to the agency for rescuing he and his brother from his collapsing AU. This agency (too lazy to name it) was very shitty to those who worked for it, paying almost nothing and often making them fight for food to encourage violence and distrust. They wouldn’t want an uprising, after all…
- As these mercenaries were being hired by Nightmare’s enemies and proving to be quite annoying, he showed up and destroyed everything, killing, capturing, scattering, or recruiting all the soldiers. He offered Horror the opportunity to work for him as a guard and soldier, in exchange being treated as a noble with all the food he could want.
- Horror is large, gruff, and always hungry. Despite his rough nature, he tends to be the kindest of the gang and becomes very protective of the others as he gets to know them.
- The reason his AU collapsed was because the code itself was starving, drained of enough magic that it started digesting its own code, collapsing in on itself. Fun. Otherwise, it began as a normal Horror!tale AU.
- His brother worked at the kitchens of the agency and went missing during Nightmare’s attack. His whereabouts are unknown.
Dust

- A Mad scientist both in the terms that he is crazy and he is angry. Made a deal with the god of Death (Reaper) to permanently kill the human from his timeline despite their Determination, having Reaper personally come and drag them into hell. In exchange, Dust worked as Reaper’s minion/preist, carrying out his bidding to help maintain the order of life and death.
- Fascinated with the prospect of reanimation and dreams of bringing his Papyrus back to life. Reaper doesn’t like this, but finds Dust’s experiments interesting and therefore allows him to continue.

- Has a pet crow named Terrance that he uses to communicate with Reaper. We love Terrance.
- Reaper has been anxious about Nightmare’s activities and sends Dust to act as a spy, joining the gang and reporting back to Reaper.

Xtale!Sans- The Wolf

- From an ice-covered Xtale AU, the young Paladin is used as bait to capture and kill the demon X!Chara, failing as the spirit fully takes control of Cross’ body and escapes before the two can be sacrificed. Almost completely overtaken by the monster, Cross makes a desperate plea to the moon god to come save him, summoning Nightmare. NM restores Cross’ control, but refuses to remove X!Chara altogether, using that as leverage to make Cross work for him; he can’t spend too much time away from Nightmare without the demon overtaking his body.
- Originally a Paladin to the sun god (Dream, although neither know it) and is therefore resistant to Nightmare’s magic (hence why he can’t make magical deals and contracts like the others and has to be controlled in different ways).
- His sword, dubbed Fred, is imbued with magic and glows in the dark. It also boomeranged back to him when thrown, but he, uh…needs some more practice with that part.
- Red pupil gets larger the more control X!Chara takes, filling both eyes when in complete control.
Killer
Something New- The Cat

- After everyone in his AU was dead, Killer got bored. Very, very, very bored. Why not poke around the old lab he used to work at, then? He might find something neat. And he does- with the magic he’s accumulated, he’s able to fuel a portal machine that can transport him to other AUs. He quickly redevelops his interest in engineering, stealing parts from other AUs to build his machines…until he’s caught. And thrown in jail. And freed by Nightmare, in exchange for working for him.
- He is a cat. Will climb. Knock thing over. Sit wherever he wants.
- He isn’t a murderer in this AU, instead fusing with the human in a last-ditch effort to stop them from wiping out the entire underground. He was forced to stay behind as everyone else evacuated, though, as it was unknown if the procedure would work or if Killer would be safe to be around. Which, to be fair, he isn’t.
- All of his socks have cat paws on the bottom

- Due to the loss of his eye and most (if not all) of his magic, Hatchet finds his strength in wielding weapons and building traps. He is fast, agile, and stealthy, though his time of starving had left him physically weak.
- Some of the monsters in the Underground went haywire and attempted to sacrifice Hatchet in some effort to gain more food, only to be stopped by, you guessed it, Nightmare. Hatchet agrees to come work for Nightmare as long as he kills Undyne and restores someone halfway decent to the throne, which he does. Other than that, the inhabitants of his AU can fend for themselves. Except for Papyrus. He’s coming with him.
- How does one person have so many weapons on their body. Where is he keeping them. Where did he get a six foot tall hammer. Why does he have fifteen knives-

How many of you get excited when you see a monarch butterfly? If you do, did you get excited as a kid, or is the excitement a function of their possibly pending extinction? If you do not, can you imagine a world without monarch butterflies?

Judgment day approaches for the monarch butterfly.
Bound by a court settlement, the Fish and Wildlife Service is supposed to decide by early December whether the monarch warrants listing as threatened or endangered. Although the agency misses many Endangered Species Act deadlines, it appears determined to meet this one after several years of study.
“We wanted to make sure that we have all the best science available … and we wanted to make sure that we were able to gather all that information and make a quality decision,” said Nicole Alt, director of FWS’ Center for Pollinator Conservation.
With the migratory butterfly passing through dozens of states, a decision to list the species could be accompanied by the designation of an expansive critical habitat. Combined with other regulatory implications, this could make the long-delayed monarch listing call one of the most consequential actions in the history of the ESA. It also appears likely, some monarch experts say, given the bleak population trends that led FWS to conclude in 2020 that “monarch viability is declining and is projected to continue declining over the next 60 years.”
Despite the dire circumstances, a campaign to help the monarch butterfly has been advancing on multiple fronts but without a unified commander in chief. Rather, the monarch’s allies march under different flags that reflect a dispersed approach toward species conservation. Some study the insect, some set aside habitat and some tinker with new tools, all without reference to a species recovery plan that an ESA listing would mandate.
Consider:
From an urban office building, a program administered by the University of Illinois, Chicago’s Energy Resources Center has recruited energy companies, state departments of transportation and counties into conserving hundreds of thousands of acres as butterfly habitat on rights of way, such as the medians between roads.
On sprawling Fort Cavazos — formerly Fort Hood — in Texas, biologists prowl the grounds in search of adult monarchs as well as eggs and larva. Since 2017, they estimate they have collected information from more than 10,000 tagged adult monarchs and forwarded this data to another team of collaborators with the Monarch Watch program based at the University of Kansas.
From her Denver office, Alt oversees four geographically scattered FWS staffers and collaborates with others in and out of government. With yet another allied group called Monarch Joint Venture, for instance, the Center for Pollinator Conservation is supporting studies of drones and artificial intelligence in measuring milkweed distribution on wildlife refuges.
And, scattered as they are, the various monarch teams, researchers and advocates periodically gather for a meeting of the minds, as they did in the summer of 2022 for a first-of-its-kind Capitol Hill butterfly summit where Interior Secretary Deb Haaland announced establishment of Alt’s pollinator center.
“It’s really been exciting to see the level of interest from lots of different sectors,” Alt said, adding that “different people want to work in different ways and in different spaces … and in the vast majority of situations they are all advocating for the same thing.”
Some conservation groups, however, want to see a more urgent focus on the problem, saying Congress needs to dramatically increase funding to help the monarchs truly recover. In letters sent last week to House and Senate appropriators, the Center for Biological Diversity and other environmental groups called on lawmakers to provide $100 million annually to restore 1 million acres of pollinator habitat in this country each year and another $30 million to preserve forests in Mexico where some of the butterflies spend their winters.
The groups noted how people over generations have heralded the black-and-orange butterfly’s “spectacular beauty and epic, life-affirming migrations.”
“Dedicating $100 million a year to monarch conservation gives these beloved butterflies a fighting chance at survival,” one letter said.

In the previous post I introduced Greenpeace. These are some wins from June posted on their website.
- Hyundai Construction Equipment commits to help stopping illegal mining in the Amazon
Greenpeace East Asia released the Stop the Excavators report in April of this year, calling to heavy machinery manufacturers to take measures that prevent their equipment being used illegally, in ways that cause violations of human rights.
This exposé revealed that Hyundai Construction Equipment is apparently the favoured brand used in illegal mining in Indigenous Lands in the Amazon.
Hyundai has now announced a series of measures to protect the forest, and will act to prevent this in the future.
- ReconAfrica suspends oil drilling in Okavango Delta
The Canadian oil company ReconAfrica has stopped drilling in Namibia’s Okavango Delta, after it was faced with lawsuits and environmental concerns. For now, the drillings have only been suspended, but this is a step in the right direction, proving that people power can work wonders.
In 2019, ReconAfrica announced fracking in some of Africa's most sensitive (both in terms of water supplies and as livelihoods for the communities in the area) environmental areas. Namibian youth climate activists, indigenous, environmental and human rights groups have been working since then to prevent this from happening.
- ASEAN steps up commitment to end forced labour and human trafficking practices of migrant fishers
In May 2023, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) leaders officially adopted the first ASEAN Declaration on Migrant Fishers Protection in history. This declaration follows many years of active campaigning by human rights advocates and civil society organizations. The campaign aims to push stronger policies to protect Southeast Asian migrants working in fisheries and their rights.
This declaration emphasised that protecting and fulfilling the rights of migrant fishers is an entire migration cycle (recruitment, placement, and repatriation), and so is a shared responsibility among the ASEAN states.
- Local fishers and civil society join forces to reforest mangroves in Senegal
The local community in the traditional fishing town Joal in Senegal started reforesting mangroves in a show of what direct action is really about.
Joal is located near mangrove forests, that are essential breeding grounds for many fish species, and are vital therefore for the fishing communities in those areas. They also store more carbon than tropical forests, and are capable of curbing climate impacts such as floods.
- Dutch creative agencies choose to no longer work with fossil fuel companies
23+ creative agencies in The Netherlands put together a Fossil No Deal, stating that they will stop working with fossil companies and no longer encourage fossil passenger transport. They call it verdrag verantwoord verleiden, a treaty for responsible seduction.
- Thailand applies new PM2.5 ambient standard
In the beginning of June, the new PM2.5 ambient standard was officially applied in Thailand. 
The new standard is now 15 μg/m3 for the annual standard and 37.5 μg/m3 for 24-hour standard, which is in keeping with the revised WHO air quality guidelines. This is a big step in the right direction to help reduce PM2.5 and solve air pollution in the country.
Greenpeace Thailand is still not at rest, though, and are continuing to fight to get the PM2.5 at its source, that is from the industries.
- In New Zealand, FSC abandons plans for ‘GE learning’ process
Greenpeace Aotearoa and other environmental organizations have been pressuring the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification scheme to abandon its plans for a ‘Genetic Engineering (GE) learning’ process.
The long-standing principle of not certifying GE trees came under threat  after pressure from FSC certified plantation  company Suzano from Brazil that has a subsidiary doing GE eucalyptus tree research trials (for glyphosate resistance). 
- Citizens say yes to net zero emissions in Switzerland
 Swiss citizens have voted in favour of a new law to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The new climate law, which was initiated seven years ago, passed a referendum with about 59% of the voters.
Net zero is now enshrined in the “federal law on climate protection, innovation and strengthening energy security“.

The Federal Aviation Administration is actively recruiting workers who suffer “severe intellectual” disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency’s website. 
“Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring,” the FAA’s website states. “They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism.”
The initiative is part of the FAA’s “Diversity and Inclusion” hiring plan, which claims “diversity is integral to achieving FAA’s mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel across our nation and beyond.”
The FAA’s website shows the agency’s guidelines on diversity hiring were last updated on March 23, 2022. 
The FAA, which is overseen by Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation, is a government agency charged with regulating civil aviation and employs roughly 45,000 people. 
All eyes have been on the FAA and airline industry in recent days, after a plug door on a Boeing 737 Max 9 blew out during an Alaska Airlines flight on Jan. 5.
Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, chairman of Do No Harm – a group of health care professionals, medical students and policymakers working to “protect health care from a radical, divisive, and discriminatory ideology” – told Fox News Digital that similar to the medical field, the aviation industry has an obligation to protect its travelers.
“The aviation industry has a responsibility for traveler safety just as the health care industry has a responsibility for patient safety. These responsibilities outweigh other factors when considering applicants to work in those fields. People with disabilities who can successfully complete the task should never face discrimination,” said Goldfarb, a retired professor and the former associate dean for curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
“Unfortunately,” Goldfarb said, identity politics is “creating opportunities for so-called oppressed groups by lowering standards for entry into those fields and thereby endangering the safety of those which it’s designed to serve. Some endeavors simply do not lend themselves to identity politics,” he added.
