Jiu Jitsu (2020)

The Predator franchise isn’t what it used to be thanks to the 2018 film and the two AVP. I can see why you’d want to make a good movie about your favorite invisible alien but “Jiu Jitsu” isn’t it. With lousy special effects, dull characters, and a story that’s nothing but excuses for fights, this movie isn’t the next Predator. It isn’t even a good alternative to DNA.

An amnesiac (Alain Moussi) is discovered near a military base as a comet flies overhead. As he recovers, he learns what nearly killed him: he and his comrades are part of a group of elite fighters who - every six years when the comet returns - battle an alien who will kill everyone in the region unless they offer a decent challenge.

An invisible spaceman with superior technology comes to our planet to fight for sport. Yup, it’s "Predator". Well, if it were led by an actor with no charisma, anyway. Our hero is a wooden slate, which makes him a great, but dull, recipient of exposition. The very first scene is a bad omen. Jake runs away from the alien that’s pursuing him. “Brex” must throw a hundred space shurikens. Only two hit and only at the last second before he falls off a cliff. Its aim sucks, which makes it a complete non-threat that's also way overpowered. Brex has the same healing abilities as Wolverine, which is why it's been coming to Earth for who knows how long and pulverizing all challengers. You'd think the humans would've tried to cheat by now but the invader is so threatening they haven't dared.

The main difference between this picture and the one it’s ripping off is the action. Here, it’s about martial arts. How is the choreography? Pretty good… most of the time. Some scenes are shot from a first-person point of view, which is a neat trick. It certainly adds variety to the numerous fights as Jake’s allies - which include Tony Jaa, JuJu Chan, and Frank Grillo - beat endless U.S. troops senseless while bullets fly around them uselessly. The kicks, punches, and throws are appropriately impactful but the digital dust added to the hits pulls you right out and more than one stunt person isn’t very good at conveying pain. It might not be so bad if the entire library of sound effects didn't come from the sample CD every sound editor gets when they graduate. Using the Wilhelm scream ironically is old. Using it earnestly? yikes.

If you’re anticipating this movie, it’s probably because you know Nicholas Cage is in it. Is he a highlight? I guess so, but that’s not saying much. The comic book panel transitions (which recall the story’s origin as a graphic novel) make you wonder if they didn’t accidentally forget to shoot key scenes and the humor (usually delivered by Eddie Steeples) makes you groan.

Jiu Jitsu feels like a decent fan-made production you’d see on YouTube, which makes you regret extra hard its hour and forty-two minute running time. Despite the wall-to-wall action, I struggled to stay awake. (March 2, 2021)
