The Great ACT-NSW-NZ Trip, 2023-2024 - Tawhai Falls

On the way back down from Mt Ruapehu we stopped at one of the shorter walks in Tongariro National Park, to a waterfall that was used as Gollum's Pool in The Two Towers.

The falls drop over the edge of an ancient lava flow, but I'm not sure which volcano it came from - probably Ruapehu. The signs said it was an easy trail, but that's only the case if you're fine with stairs. A lot of stairs.

There were more weeds down here than higher on the mountain, unfortunately, but on the other hand that meant more pollinating insects - photo of some of them to follow.

We have now made our way from Taranaki area to Taupo and a lovely hotel with thermal pool which can't be bad and a view across Lake Taupo. Our first day out visit has been to Tongariro National park and to the 3 amazing volcanoes Ruapehu, Tongariro and the most famous, Ngauruhoe, which many of the Lord of the Rings fans will know as Mt Doom. The three together are wonderful at this time of year with Ruapehu having a scattering of snow at its top but all still quite accessible as far as the ski areas. We spent the day doing a round tour of the 3 peaks and going up to two of the main ski areas to get views across the plains. There is little to say other than wow and enjoy the photos!
