From the Greek epi- ‘upon’ and lobos ‘a pod’ because the flowers appearing to be growing on the seed pod. glabellum means 'hairless'.

A willowherb endemic to alpine areas on North and South Island, and Auckland Island. More common on South Island, which has more mountains. The minute pappate seeds are wind-dispersed.

Tongariro Northern Circuit and Around the Mountain - Blyth Hut to Whakapapa

The final couple of days of an epic six day hike around Tongariro National Park, an 87km loop covering the Great Walk Northern Circuit and the Around the Mountain Track. The hike from Blyth Hut to Whakapapaiti Hut was one of the longest I’ve ever done, starting at sunrise, and finishing a couple of hours after sunset. This month, I got to go on my dream trip, the adventure I'd longed to go on since I was a thirteen-year-old watching the LOTR movies for the first time. I got to spend two weeks in Aotearoa/New Zealand, home of Middle-earth, and visit many of the filming locations.

I spent one day at Tongariro National Park on Te Ika-a-Maui (North Island) and visit "Mordor" and "Mt Doom". I brought my little Sauron action figure along for the trip and felt he deserved to visit his Land of Darkness.

The snow-capped volcano in the background of the photo is Mt Ruapehu, which was where the Mt Doom scenes were filmed.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

to dwudziestokilometrowa przeprawa przez masyw Tongariro, fragment jednej z Wielkich Wędrówek Nowej Zelandii, Północnej Pętli Tongariro (Tongariro Northern Circuit). W przeciwieństwie do Wędrówek, nie wymaga wcześniejszej rezerwacji i jest jednodniowa, więc da się ją przejść dopasowując się do pogody.

Mount Tongariro znajduje się w północnej części masywu Ruapehu, najwyższej grupy górskiej całej Wyspy Północnej. Od niego nazwano cały park narodowy, mimo że to nie on jest najwyższy, ani nawet najbardziej charakterystyczny. Znacznie bardziej wybijają się Mount Ruapehu, przez swoje płaty wiecznego śniegu, oraz Mount Ngauruhoe, dzięki idealnej sylwetce ściętego stożka.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing przechodzi przez wysokogórskie, wulkaniczne pustkowia. Nie zdobywa się na niej żadnego istotnego szczytu, ale rozmaitość świeżo uformowanych krajobrazów wynagradza to w zupełności.

Zanim jednak zaczniemy samą wędrówkę, trzeba sobie zorganizować transport. Jak widać z powyższej mapy, nie wracamy w to samo miejsce. W dodatku parking początkowy jest niewielki i latem ograniczony do 4 godzin. Liczne lokalne biznesy załatwią nam na szczęście dowóz na start i odbiór z końca.

Sama podróż już zapowiada przygodę. Po wyjeździe z wioski National Park autobus wkrótce skręca w szutrową drogę prowadzącą ciągle w górę przez zagłębienia i wypukłości promieniście rozchodzące się od położonych w dali wulkanów. To zastygłe dawno potoki lawy, teraz porośnięte ostrymi trawami i drobną kolczastą krzewiną. Chiński rozklekotaniec piłuje silnik po stromiźnie, produkując chmurę kurzu, w dużej części zasysaną do środka przez nieszczelne okna. Kilka z ponad 30 osób kaszle, ktoś kicha. Jest tak jakby egzotycznie. Jeszcze ciekawiej robi się, gdy spełzający z przeciwka obłoczek kurzu okazuje się być takich samych rozmiarów autokarem, na drodze o szerokości jednego. Następuje wtedy powolne wymijanie, metr za metrem, przy czym odległość między pojazdami nie przekracza długości dwóch dłoni.

Parking Mangatepopo pełny jest turystów, choć to dopiero ósma rano i nie ma tu nic pr��cz dwóch toalet i rudej, kortenowej tablicy witającej nas na szlaku. Jej naturalnie spłowiały kolor bardzo pasuje do surowego, żużlowo-popielnego otoczenia. Wysiadamy i od razu ruszamy w trasę wraz z kilkoma setkami innych amatorów wulkanów wysiadającymi co chwilę z innych busików; będziemy się nieustannie wyprzedzać, mijać i spotykać ponownie, przede wszystkim w kolejkach do rozmieszczonych co kilka kilometrów sławojek, w liczbie daleko niewystarczającej dla takich tłumów. Szlak jest niestety zupełnie pozbawiony kryjówek umożliwiających ulżenie sobie na łonie natury, bez udziału co najmniej kilkunastu świadków.

Pierwsza część trasy to długa, łagodnie nachylona ścieżka prowadząca szeroką doliną, częściowo zwężoną potokami lawowymi. U jej końca, po dwóch godzinach marszu, pierwsze strome podejście doprowadza nas na przełęcz - płaskowyż pomiędzy Mt. Tongariro a Mt. Ngauruhoe.

Mniej ruchawi i cięższi uczestnicy mają tu moment zasapania. Z tego powodu, jak również dlatego, że jest to pierwsze miejsce, gdzie można się swobodniej rozproszyć - kolczasta roślinność zanika zupełnie - wiele osób robi tu biwak. Ktoś żartuje z dopiero co pokonanego podejścia, rzucając cytat z Władcy Pierścieni: "Panie Frodo, nie mogę za pana ponieść Pierścienia, ale mogę ponieść pana!" - bardzo trafnie, bo przecież jesteśmy u stóp Góry Przeznaczenia, Orodruiny, którą w filmie była piętrząca się nad nami, złowieszczo piękna, Mt. Ngauruhoe.

Dalej idziemy dnem starego krateru Mt. Tongariro, obecnie zasypanego częściowo materiałem wyrzuconym z młodszych kominów Mt. Ngauruhoe i Czerwonego Krateru. Obie formy powstały ledwie 2-3 tys. lat temu, a ostatnio aktywne były w XIX i XX wieku.

Z Czerwonego Krateru zjeżdżamy w dół po stromym stoku z luźnego materiału piroklastycznego - drobnych kamyków. Tu tworzy się duży zator, bo większość niedzielnych spacerowiczów nie jest nawykła do schodzenia po piargach i stawia im dziarski opór, czasem na wszystkich czterech kończynach. Wyprzedzając owych spidermanów pokonujemy następny płaskowyż, być może stary krater, by dotrzeć do Szmaragdowych Jeziorek.

Wkrótce rozpoczniemy długie, monotonne zejście na parking docelowy. Jeszcze tylko rzut oka wstecz na Orodruinę i opuszczamy czerwono-czarno-żółty krajobraz Tongariro.

Przez najbliższe dwie i pół godziny towarzyszyć nam będzie majaczące w oddali wielkie Jezioro Taupo, coraz bardziej chowające się za dzielące nas od niego pasmo niższych wulkanów.

Kolejny cud Nowej Zelandii poznany! Mam przeczucie, że to był taki Milford Sound Wyspy Północnej. Nie wiem, czy coś go przebije. Może Taranaki, które mieliśmy okazję widzieć wyraźnie tego dnia.
